¹ Now the famine was still severe in the land. ² So when Jacob’s sons had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.” ³ But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ ⁴ If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you. ⁵ But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’” ⁶ “Why did you bring this trouble upon me?” Israel asked. “Why did you tell the man you had another brother?” ⁷ They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?” ⁸ And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die—neither we, nor you, nor our children. ⁹ I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life. ¹⁰ If we had not delayed, we could have come and gone twice by now.” ¹¹ Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your packs and carry them down as a gift for the man—a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds. ¹² Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. ¹³ Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once. ¹⁴ May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.” ¹⁵ So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. ¹⁶ When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for they shall dine with me at noon.” ¹⁷ The man did as Joseph had commanded and took the brothers to Joseph’s house. ¹⁸ But the brothers were frightened that they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our donkeys.” ¹⁹ So they approached Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. ²⁰ “Please, sir,” they said, “we really did come down here the first time to buy food. ²¹ But when we came to the place we lodged for the night, we opened our sacks and, behold, each of us found his silver in the mouth of his sack! It was the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us. ²² We have brought additional silver with us to buy food. We do not know who put our silver in our sacks.” ²³ “It is fine,” said the steward. “Do not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, gave you the treasure that was in your sacks. I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them. ²⁴ And the steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet, and provided food for their donkeys. ²⁵ Since the brothers had been told that they were going to eat a meal there, they prepared their gift for Joseph’s arrival at noon. ²⁶ When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought, and they bowed to the ground before him. ²⁷ He asked if they were well, and then he asked, “How is your elderly father you told me about? Is he still alive?” ²⁸ “Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him. ²⁹ When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” Then he declared, “May God be gracious to you, my son.” ³⁰ Joseph hurried out because he was moved to tears for his brother, and he went to a private room to weep. ³¹ Then he washed his face and came back out. Regaining his composure, he said, “Serve the meal.” ³² They separately served Joseph, his brothers, and the Egyptians. They ate separately because the Egyptians would not eat with the Hebrews, since that was detestable to them. ³³ They were seated before Joseph in order by age, from the firstborn to the youngest, and the men looked at one another in astonishment. ³⁴ When the portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times larger than any of the others. So they feasted and drank freely with Joseph.

¹⁰ Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.

¹³ And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really bear a child when I am old?’

⁵⁴ the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt. ⁵⁵ When extreme hunger came to all the land of Egypt and the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.” ⁵⁶ When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. ⁵⁷ And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.

⁵ So the sons of Israel were among those who came to buy grain, since the famine had also spread to the land of Canaan.

¹ So I took all this to heart and concluded that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in God’s hands. Man does not know what lies ahead, whether love or hate. ² It is the same for all: There is a common fate for the righteous and the wicked, for the good and the bad, for the clean and the unclean, for the one who sacrifices and the one who does not. As it is for the good, so it is for the sinner; as it is for the one who makes a vow, so it is for the one who refuses to take a vow.

¹⁰ Our skin is as hot as an oven with fever from our hunger.

¹¹ Then famine and great suffering swept across Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers could not find food. ¹² When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers on their first visit. ¹³ On their second visit, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, and his family became known to Pharaoh.

¹ When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?” ² “Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”

⁴ If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

²⁰ “Please, sir,” they said, “we really did come down here the first time to buy food.

¹⁶ Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with turmoil.

¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

¹⁶ She appraises a field and buys it; from her earnings she plants a vineyard.

⁸ If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

⁶ Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it. ⁸ But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

¹⁵ And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. ¹⁶ Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!” ¹⁷ So Joseph imprisoned them for three days, ¹⁸ and on the third day he said to them, “I fear God. So do this and you will live: ¹⁹ If you are honest, leave one of your brothers in custody while the rest of you go and take back grain to relieve the hunger of your households. ²⁰ Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words can be verified, that you may not die.” And to this they consented.

³³ Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to relieve the hunger of your households, and go. ³⁴ But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the land.’”

⁵ But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”

²³ But you said to your servants, ‘Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’

¹³ “Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”

²⁴ But the king added, “He may return to his house, but he must not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, but he did not see the king.

²⁸ Now Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years without seeing the face of the king.

³² “Look,” said Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”

³⁴ I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’

²⁵ Now I know that none of you among whom I have preached the kingdom will see my face again.

³⁸ They were especially grieved by his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.

³⁸ But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”

²⁶ But we answered, ‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.’

¹² Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

¹³ But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”

³ But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’

²⁷ He asked if they were well, and then he asked, “How is your elderly father you told me about? Is he still alive?”

² “Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”

¹⁹ You are also directed to tell them: ‘Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your young children and your wives, and bring your father and come back.

⁸ along with all of Joseph’s household, and his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children and flocks and herds were left in Goshen.

²¹ Therefore do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” So Joseph reassured his brothers and spoke kindly to them.

³¹ But I will bring your children, whom you said would become plunder, into the land you have rejected—and they will enjoy it.

⁶ Let Reuben live and not die, nor his men be few.”

⁴ If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”

¹³ But one of his servants replied, “Please, have scouts take five of the horses that remain in the city. Their plight will be no worse than all the Israelites who are left here. You can see that all the Israelites here are doomed. So let us send them and find out.”

²¹ And there by the Ahava Canal I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.

¹⁷ I will not die, but I will live and proclaim what the LORD has done.

⁵ And surely I will require the life of any man or beast by whose hand your lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting from anyone who takes the life of his fellow man:

³⁹ I did not bring you anything torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was stolen by day or night.

³⁷ Then Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him.”

³² Indeed, your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.’ ³³ Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.

²¹ Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”

³ Give me, I pray, the pledge You demand. Who else will be my guarantor?

¹²² Ensure Your servant’s well-being; do not let the arrogant oppress me.

¹⁸ If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not warn him or speak out to warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, and I will hold you responsible for his blood.

²⁰ Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood.

⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword coming and fails to blow the horn to warn the people, and the sword comes and takes away a life, then that one will be taken away in his iniquity, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.’

⁸ If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ but you do not speak out to dissuade him from his way, then that wicked man will die in his iniquity, yet I will hold you accountable for his blood.

⁵⁰ As a result, this generation will be charged with the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the foundation of the world,

¹⁸ But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account. ¹⁹ I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.

²² Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

¹⁶ But when Lot hesitated, the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s compassion for them.

¹³ Jacob spent the night there, and from what he had brought with him, he selected a gift for his brother Esau: ¹⁴ 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams, ¹⁵ 30 milk camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys. ¹⁶ He entrusted them to his servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds.” ¹⁷ He instructed the one in the lead, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong, where are you going, and whose animals are these before you?’ ¹⁸ then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift, sent to my lord Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us.’” ¹⁹ He also instructed the second, the third, and all those following behind the herds: “When you meet Esau, you are to say the same thing to him. ²⁰ You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.” ²¹ So Jacob’s gifts went on before him, while he spent the night in the camp.

¹⁰ But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably.

²⁵ And as they sat down to eat a meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were carrying spices, balm, and myrrh on their way down to Egypt.

¹⁴ May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

²⁴ But I have told you that you will inherit their land, since I will give it to you as an inheritance—a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the peoples.

¹⁴ with the bountiful harvest from the sun and the abundant yield of the seasons,

⁷ “If we do go,” Saul replied, “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”

²⁷ Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.

²¹ And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

¹⁵ not including the revenue from the merchants, traders, and all the Arabian kings and governors of the land.

²⁵ Year after year, each visitor would bring his tribute: articles of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules.

¹⁹ “Let there be a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

⁸ So the king said to Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand, go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the LORD through him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

⁸ Ahaz also took the silver and gold found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the king’s palace, and he sent it as a gift to the king of Assyria.

¹² At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard about Hezekiah’s illness.

¹⁶ “Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”

²⁹ Because of Your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring You gifts.

¹⁰ May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.

¹¹ Make and fulfill your vows to the LORD your God; let all the neighboring lands bring tribute to Him who is to be feared.

¹⁸ A man lacking judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbor.

¹⁶ A man’s gift opens doors for him, and brings him before great men.

⁶ Many seek the favor of the prince, and everyone is a friend of the gift giver.

¹⁴ A gift in secret soothes anger, and a covert bribe pacifies great wrath.

¹⁰ How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! Your love is much better than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume than all spices.

¹⁴ with nard and saffron, with calamus and cinnamon, with every kind of frankincense tree, with myrrh and aloes, with all the finest spices.

¹⁴ Come away, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains of spices.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead? Is no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people not been restored?

¹⁵ The men of Dedan were your clients; many coastlands were your market; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony.

¹⁷ Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith, cakes and honey, oil and balm for your merchandise.

¹⁴ When he would not be dissuaded, we fell silent and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”

²⁵ Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to return each man’s silver to his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. This order was carried out,

³⁵ As they began emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his bag of silver! And when they and their father saw the bags of silver, they were dismayed.

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody.

⁸ Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love. For he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

²¹ For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men.

⁸ Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things.

⁶ and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you.

²¹ but test all things. Hold fast to what is good.

⁸ Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

¹ When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Walk before Me and be blameless.

¹⁴ And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

³ May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a company of peoples.

¹¹ And God told him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation—even a company of nations—shall come from you, and kings shall descend from you.

²¹ the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.

²⁴ And he turned away from them and wept. When he turned back and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and had him bound before their eyes.

³⁶ Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons. Joseph is gone and Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is going against me!”

²⁷ Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put into the heart of the king to so honor the house of the LORD in Jerusalem,

¹¹ O Lord, may Your ear be attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to revere Your name. Give Your servant success this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” (At that time I was the cupbearer to the king.)

⁵ Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it. ⁶ He will bring forth your righteousness like the dawn, your justice like the noonday sun. ⁷ Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when men prosper in their ways, when they carry out wicked schemes.

⁷ Show us Your loving devotion, O LORD, and grant us Your salvation.

⁵ For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures forever; His faithfulness continues to all generations.

⁴¹ May Your loving devotion come to me, O LORD, Your salvation, according to Your promise.

¹ These are the proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel,

⁷ When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even the man’s enemies live at peace with him.

¹ The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it where He pleases.

¹³ Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; break forth in song, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people, and He will have compassion on His afflicted ones.

⁵⁰ His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.

¹⁰ and rescued him from all his troubles. He granted Joseph favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt and all his household.

² To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹⁶ But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

⁴ To Titus, my true child in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

³ Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, will be with us in truth and love.

² But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

⁸ So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.

² So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household, who managed all he owned, “Place your hand under my thigh, ³ and I will have you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am dwelling, ⁴ but will go to my country and my kindred to take a wife for my son Isaac.” ⁵ The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” ⁶ Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there. ⁷ The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there. ⁸ And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.” ⁹ So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter. ¹⁰ Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed with all manner of good things from his master in hand. And he set out for Nahor’s hometown in Aram-naharaim.

³⁰ So Isaac prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

⁵⁴ Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his relatives to eat a meal. And after they had eaten, they spent the night on the mountain.

⁴ Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned. ⁵ From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field.

¹⁹ So they approached Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.

¹ Then Joseph instructed his steward: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each one’s silver in the mouth of his sack.

⁴ They had not gone far from the city when Joseph told his steward, “Pursue the men at once, and when you overtake them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?

¹¹ Why should I take my bread and water and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give them to these men whose origin I do not know?”

² She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table.

²¹ Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his anguish when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”

²⁸ “My silver has been returned!” he said to his brothers. “It is here in my sack.” Their hearts sank, and trembling, they turned to one another and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

¹⁴ and he then accuses her of shameful conduct and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman and had relations with her, but I discovered she was not a virgin.”

¹⁷ And now he has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.’ But here is the proof of her virginity.” And they shall spread out the cloth before the city elders.

²² “We are going to die,” he said to his wife, “for we have seen God!”

⁴ (Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)

²¹ Sounds of terror fill his ears; in his prosperity the destroyer attacks him.

¹⁴ They advance as through a wide breach; through the ruins they keep rolling in.

⁵ There they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to fear. For God has scattered the bones of those who besieged you. You put them to shame, for God has despised them.

¹⁶ When I tried to understand all this, it was troublesome in my sight

² When it was reported to the house of David that Aram was in league with Ephraim, the hearts of Ahaz and his people trembled like trees in the forest shaken by the wind.

²⁶ When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear. ²⁷ But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

¹⁶ But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead!”

⁸ But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

³ So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

¹⁰ “Not so, my lord,” they replied. “Your servants have come to buy food.

²⁷ At the place where they lodged for the night, one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of the sack.

⁷ They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”

²⁷ At the place where they lodged for the night, one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of the sack. ²⁸ “My silver has been returned!” he said to his brothers. “It is here in my sack.” Their hearts sank, and trembling, they turned to one another and said, “What is this that God has done to us?” ²⁹ When they reached their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they described to him all that had happened to them: ³⁰ “The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us and accused us of spying on the country. ³¹ But we told him, ‘We are honest men, not spies. ³² We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.’ ³³ Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to relieve the hunger of your households, and go. ³⁴ But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the land.’” ³⁵ As they began emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his bag of silver! And when they and their father saw the bags of silver, they were dismayed.

¹² Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.

¹⁵ So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

⁵ Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

¹⁸ Pray for us; we are convinced that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.

¹² Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.

¹⁶ keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ.

²³ But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”

²⁰ “Peace to you,” said the old man. “Let me supply everything you need. Only do not spend the night in the square.”

⁶ and say to him, ‘Long life to you, and peace to you and your house and to all that belongs to you.

¹⁸ Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.” So David received them and made them leaders of his troops.

¹⁷ Then the king sent this reply: To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of your associates living in Samaria and elsewhere in the region west of the Euphrates: Greetings.

⁵ Whatever house you enter, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this house.’

³⁶ While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

²⁷ Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

¹⁹ It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them.

²¹ Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.”

²⁶ Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

⁴ Let a little water be brought, that you may wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree.

² and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

³² So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions.

⁴⁴ And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

⁴ So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist. ⁵ After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him. ⁶ He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?” ⁷ Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” ⁸ “Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him. Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.” ⁹ “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!” ¹⁰ Jesus told him, “Whoever has already bathed needs only to wash his feet, and he will be completely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” ¹¹ For He knew who would betray Him. That is why He said, “Not all of you are clean.” ¹² When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His outer garments, He reclined with them again and asked, “Do you know what I have done for you? ¹³ You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am. ¹⁴ So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵ I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

¹¹ Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your packs and carry them down as a gift for the man—a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds.

¹⁶ When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for they shall dine with me at noon.”

²⁹ May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”

⁷ We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to mine.” ⁸ “Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked. “Will you actually rule us?” So they hated him even more because of his dream and his statements. ⁹ Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Look,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” ¹⁰ He told his father and brothers, but his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream that you have had? Will your mother and brothers and I actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”

¹⁹ “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to one another. ²⁰ “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. We can say that a vicious animal has devoured him. Then we shall see what becomes of his dreams!”

⁶ Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; he was the one who sold grain to all its people. So when his brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.

²⁸ “Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him.

⁹ May the nomads bow before him, and his enemies lick the dust.

¹¹ It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.”

¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

¹⁴ Then Israel told him, “Go now and see how your brothers and the flocks are faring, and bring word back to me.” So he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. And when Joseph arrived in Shechem,

¹⁶ “I myself cannot do it,” Joseph replied, “but God will give Pharaoh a sound answer.”

¹¹ We are all sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”

⁷ So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and went into the tent.

¹⁵ So they turned aside there and went to the home of the young Levite, the house of Micah, and greeted him.

²² Then David left his supplies in the care of the quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.

⁵ So David sent ten young men and instructed them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel. Greet him in my name

¹⁰ he sent his son Hadoram to greet King David and bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze,

⁷ We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to mine.”

²⁶ When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought, and they bowed to the ground before him.

² On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head arrived from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him homage.

⁴ When the woman from Tekoa went to the king, she fell facedown in homage and said, “Help me, O king!”

¹⁶ And Bathsheba bowed down in homage to the king, who asked, “What is your desire?”

¹⁷ After the death of Jehoiada, however, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.

²² Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb, ²³ and she conceived and gave birth to a son. “God has taken away my shame,” she said. ²⁴ She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”

¹⁷ During her severe labor, the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you are having another son.” ¹⁸ And with her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-oni. But his father called him Benjamin.

⁸ Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God, who has made me a father to Pharaoh—lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

²⁵ may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;

¹⁹ So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make a confession to Him. I urge you to tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

¹¹ Now, my sons, do not be negligent, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, to minister before Him, and to burn incense.”

¹ For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Psalm. A song. May God be gracious to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us, Selah

⁴ He has caused His wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate.

⁴ Light dawns in the darkness for the upright—for the gracious, compassionate, and righteous.

¹ A song of ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! ² It is like fine oil on the head, running down on the beard, running down Aaron’s beard over the collar of his robes.

¹⁹ O people in Zion who dwell in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. He will surely be gracious when you cry for help; when He hears, He will answer you.

² O LORD, be gracious to us! We wait for You. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble.

⁹ “But ask now for God’s favor. Will He be gracious? Since this has come from your hands, will He show you favor?” asks the LORD of Hosts.

² Just then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”

²² Jesus turned and saw her. “Take courage, daughter,” He said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was cured from that very hour.

²⁴ And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

¹ Continue in brotherly love.

² But he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household soon heard of it.

¹⁴ Then Joseph threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept as they embraced. ¹⁵ Joseph kissed each of his brothers as he wept over them. And afterward his brothers talked with him.

²⁹ Joseph prepared his chariot and went there to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, embraced him, and wept profusely.

²⁶ Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she yearned with compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”

²⁰ Is not Ephraim a precious son to Me, a delightful child? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore My heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him,” declares the LORD.

⁸ How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred!

³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. ³⁴ “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they answered. ³⁵ Jesus wept. ³⁶ Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!” ³⁷ But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying?” ³⁸ Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.

¹⁹ I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, especially in the trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.

³¹ Therefore be alert and remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

³⁷ They all wept openly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.

⁸ God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

¹ Therefore if you have any encouragement in Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and compassion,

¹² Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

⁴ Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy.

¹⁷ If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?

¹ Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Send everyone away from me!” So none of them were with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers.

¹⁴ “I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will groan like a woman in labor; I will at once gasp and pant.

¹⁶ This is what the LORD says: “Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come, declares the LORD. Then your children will return from the land of the enemy.

¹⁰ For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.

³⁴ you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.”

²⁶ But Moses replied, “It would not be right to do that, because the sacrifices we offer to the LORD our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices that are detestable before the Egyptians, will they not stone us?

²² He gave new garments to each of them, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels of silver and five sets of clothes.

⁵ But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her womb.

²² Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited—about thirty in all. ²³ And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you and told you to set aside.” ²⁴ So the cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul dined with Samuel that day.

⁸ Then he said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him.

⁶ Give strong drink to one who is perishing, and wine to the bitter in soul.

⁷ Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart, for God has already approved your works:

¹⁹ A feast is prepared for laughter, and wine makes life merry, but money is the answer for everything.

¹ I have come to my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends, and drink; drink freely, O beloved.

⁶ For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans—that ruthless and impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own.

¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”

¹⁰ and said, “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now!”
