⁶⁹ Meanwhile, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came up to him. “You also were with Jesus the Galilean,” she said. ⁷⁰ But he denied it before them all: “I do not know what you are talking about.” ⁷¹ When Peter had gone out to the gateway, another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁷² And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man!” ⁷³ After a little while, those standing nearby came up to Peter. “Surely you are one of them,” they said, “for your accent gives you away.” ⁷⁴ At that he began to curse and swear to them, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

⁶⁶ While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the servant girls of the high priest came down ⁶⁷ and saw him warming himself there. She looked at Peter and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.” ⁶⁸ But he denied it. “I do not know or even understand what you are talking about,” he said. Then he went out to the gateway, and the rooster crowed. ⁶⁹ There the servant girl saw him and again said to those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.” ⁷⁰ But he denied it again. After a little while, those standing nearby said once more to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you too are a Galilean.” ⁷¹ But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” ⁷² And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

³⁴ But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

⁵⁶ A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,” she said. ⁵⁷ But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said. ⁵⁸ A short time later, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” ⁵⁹ About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.” ⁶⁰ “Man, I do not know what you are talking about,” Peter replied. While he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” ⁶² And he went outside and wept bitterly.

¹⁶ But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. ¹⁷ At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.

²⁵ Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” ²⁶ One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?” ²⁷ Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.

¹² So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.
