¹ Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. ² So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. ³ And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. ⁴ Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!” ⁵ But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply. ⁶ Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing. ⁷ And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. ⁸ So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom. ⁹ “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked. ¹⁰ For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over. ¹¹ But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead. ¹² So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?” ¹³ And they shouted back, “Crucify Him!” ¹⁴ “Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!” ¹⁵ And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified. ¹⁶ Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together. ¹⁷ They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and set it on His head. ¹⁸ And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹ They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down and bowed before Him. ²⁰ After they had mocked Him, they removed the purple robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him. ²¹ Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. ²² They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull. ²³ There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. ²⁴ And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take. ²⁵ It was the third hour when they crucified Him. ²⁶ And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁷ Along with Jesus, they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left. ^{28 29} And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰ come down from the cross and save Yourself!” ³¹ In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! ³² Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him. ³³ From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. ³⁴ At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” ³⁵ When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.” ³⁶ And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” ³⁷ But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. ³⁸ And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. ³⁹ When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” ⁴⁰ And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. ⁴¹ These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him. ⁴² Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), ⁴³ Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so. ⁴⁵ When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. ⁴⁶ So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. ⁴⁷ Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was placed.

² The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together, against the LORD and against His Anointed One:

²² But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to the fire of hell.

¹⁸ “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death ¹⁹ and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. And on the third day He will be raised to life.”

¹ When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put Him to death. ² They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.

³³ “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles, ³⁴ who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.”

³² He will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. ³³ They will flog Him and kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.”

⁶⁶ At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, met together. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said,

¹ Then the whole council rose and led Jesus away to Pilate. ² And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.” ³ So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. ⁴ Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.” ⁵ But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people all over Judea with His teaching. He began in Galilee and has come all the way here.”

²⁸ Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover. ²⁹ So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?” ³⁰ “If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.” ³¹ “You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied. ³² This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. ³³ Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” ³⁴ “Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?” ³⁵ “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?” ³⁶ Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.” ³⁷ “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.” ³⁸ “What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.

¹³ The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus. You handed Him over and rejected Him before Pilate, even though he had decided to release Him.

⁵ The next day the rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, ⁶ along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and many others from the high priest’s family.

²⁵ You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? ²⁶ The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One.’ ²⁷ In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed. ²⁸ They carried out what Your hand and will had decided beforehand would happen.

² asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”

¹¹ Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, who questioned Him: “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. ¹² And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer. ¹³ Then Pilate asked Him, “Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?” ¹⁴ But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.

⁹ “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked.

¹² So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?”

¹⁸ And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”

²⁶ And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

² And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.” ³ So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

¹⁹ Pilate also had a notice posted on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but only that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’” ²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

¹³ I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who made the good confession in His testimony before Pontius Pilate:

⁷ He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth.

¹² And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer.

⁶⁰ So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?” ⁶¹ But Jesus remained silent and made no reply. Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”

⁵ But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply.

²⁹ So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?” ³⁰ “If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.” ³¹ “You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.

⁶ As soon as the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” “You take Him and crucify Him,” Pilate replied, “for I find no basis for a charge against Him.” ⁷ “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”

¹² From then on, Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a king is defying Caesar.”

⁶² So the high priest stood up and asked Him, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”

¹³ Then Pilate asked Him, “Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?”

¹⁰ So Pilate said to Him, “Do You refuse to speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?”

⁷ I have become a portent to many, but You are my strong refuge.

¹⁸ Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me as signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD of Hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.

⁸ Hear now, O high priest Joshua, you and your companions seated before you, who are indeed a sign. For behold, I am going to bring My servant, the Branch.

¹⁴ But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.

⁹ and he went back into the Praetorium. “Where are You from?” he asked. But Jesus gave no answer.

⁹ For it seems to me that God has displayed us apostles at the end of the procession, like prisoners appointed for death. We have become a spectacle to the whole world, to angels as well as to men.

² “You know that the Passover is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

⁵ “But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”

¹⁵ Now it was the governor’s custom at the feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing. ¹⁶ At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas. ¹⁷ So when the crowd had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” ¹⁸ For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him. ¹⁹ While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.” ²⁰ But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death. ²¹ “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they replied. ²² “What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him!” ²³ “Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!” ²⁴ When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.” ²⁵ All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” ²⁶ So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.

¹⁶ Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” ^{17 18} But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” ¹⁹ (Barabbas had been imprisoned for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) ²⁰ Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again, ²¹ but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” ²² A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release Him.” ²³ But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices for Jesus to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed. ²⁴ So Pilate sentenced that their demand be met. ²⁵ As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and handed Jesus over to their will.

³⁹ But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” ⁴⁰ “Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)

²⁷ After two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.

⁹ But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem to stand trial before me on these charges?”

¹⁶ At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.

¹⁴ It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour. And Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your King!” ¹⁵ At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” “Shall I crucify your King?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” replied the chief priests. ¹⁶ Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, and the soldiers took Him away.

¹³ The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus. You handed Him over and rejected Him before Pilate, even though he had decided to release Him. ¹⁴ You rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. ¹⁵ You killed the Author of life, but God raised Him from the dead, and we are witnesses of the fact.

⁴ while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, ⁵ but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. ⁶ “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?

¹¹ And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept in mind what he had said.

⁸ And Saul was furious and resented this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?” ⁹ And from that day forward Saul kept a jealous eye on David.

⁴ Wrath is cruel and anger is like a flood, but who can withstand jealousy?

⁴ I saw that all labor and success spring from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

¹⁸ For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they blasphemously contradicted what Paul was saying.

³ For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled, and enslaved to all sorts of desires and pleasures—living in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. ¹⁵ Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.

⁵ Or do you think the Scripture says without reason that the Spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy?

¹² Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous.

¹ “Hear this, O priests! Take heed, O house of Israel! Give ear, O royal house! For this judgment is against you because you have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.

²⁰ But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death.

⁴⁰ “Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)

¹⁴ You rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.

⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. ⁷ He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk with integrity,

⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ⁷ Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

⁵ Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will administer justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶ In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

⁹ Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

² asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” ³ When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And when he had assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.

⁵ “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

²² “What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him!” ²³ “Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”

⁹ The ones who went ahead and those who followed were shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” ¹⁰ “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest!” ¹¹ Then Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, He went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

⁴ Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me—my enemies for no reason. Though I did not steal, I must repay.

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

⁹ He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.

⁴ “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What is that to us?” they replied. “You bear the responsibility.”

¹⁹ While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.”

¹⁴ and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him. ¹⁵ Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.

²¹ but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”

⁴¹ We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

⁴⁷ When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.”

³⁸ “What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.

⁶ As soon as the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” “You take Him and crucify Him,” Pilate replied, “for I find no basis for a charge against Him.”

Anyone who declares himself a king is defying Caesar.” ¹³ When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is Gabbatha. ¹⁴ It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour. And Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your King!” ¹⁵ At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” “Shall I crucify your King?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” replied the chief priests.

⁵⁴ On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth at him. ⁵⁵ But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ⁵⁶ “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” ⁵⁷ At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him.

³⁴ But when they realized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

²² The crowd listened to Paul until he made this statement. Then they lifted up their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He is not fit to live!” ²³ As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air,

²⁶ Such a high priest truly befits us—One who is holy, innocent, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot.

¹¹ Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; may Your glory cover all the earth.

³ The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows long.

²⁵ The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is set securely on high.

⁶ I offered My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spittle.

¹⁹ and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. And on the third day He will be raised to life.”

²⁶ So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.

³⁴ who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.”

³³ They will flog Him and kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.”

¹ Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.

¹⁹ But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.

²⁴ He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.”

³ At that time the chief priests and elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,

²⁷ Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him. ²⁸ They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. ²⁹ And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt down before Him to mock Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” ³⁰ Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly. ³¹ After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.

²⁸ Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.

³³ Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

¹ At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was called the Italian Regiment.

²⁸ They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. ²⁹ And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt down before Him to mock Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” ³⁰ Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly.

¹¹ And even Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in a fine robe, they sent Him back to Pilate.

² The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, set it on His head, and dressed Him in a purple robe. ³ And they went up to Him again and again, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapping Him in the face.

¹⁰ He told his father and brothers, but his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream that you have had? Will your mother and brothers and I actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”

²⁰ “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. We can say that a vicious animal has devoured him. Then we shall see what becomes of his dreams!”

⁴² “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

² So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

²⁹ And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰ come down from the cross and save Yourself!” ³¹ In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! ³² Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him.

³⁶ The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine. ³⁷ “If You are the King of the Jews,” they said, “save Yourself!”

⁵² When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.

²⁸ “Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him.

¹⁸ Nevertheless, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

² All the royal servants at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, because the king had commanded that this be done for him. But Mordecai would not bow down or pay homage. ³ Then the royal servants at the king’s gate asked Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the command of the king?” ⁴ Day after day they warned him, but he would not comply. So they reported it to Haman to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, since he had told them he was a Jew. ⁵ When Haman saw that Mordecai would not bow down or pay him homage, he was filled with rage.

⁹ Would it be well when He examined you? Could you deceive Him like a man?

⁸ A senseless and nameless brood, they were driven off the land. ⁹ And now they mock me in song; I have become a byword among them. ¹⁰ They abhor me and keep far from me; they do not hesitate to spit in my face. ¹¹ Because God has unstrung my bow and afflicted me, they have cast off restraint in my presence. ¹² The rabble arises at my right; they lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps against me.

⁶ But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. ⁷ All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:

¹⁵ But when I stumbled, they assembled in glee; they gathered together against me. Assailants I did not know slandered me without ceasing. ¹⁶ Like godless jesters at a feast, they gnashed their teeth at me. ¹⁷ How long, O Lord, will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.

¹² Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of drunkards.

¹⁹ You know my reproach, my shame and disgrace. All my adversaries are before You. ²⁰ Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found no one.

²³ By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth, a word that will not be revoked: Every knee will bow before Me, every tongue will swear allegiance.

⁷ Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, to Him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the Servant of rulers: “Kings will see You and rise, and princes will bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen You.”

¹⁴ Just as many were appalled at Him—His appearance was disfigured beyond that of any man, and His form was marred beyond human likeness—

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. ⁴ Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted. ⁵ But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

¹ Now, O daughter of troops, mobilize your troops; for a siege is laid against us! With a rod they will strike the cheek of the judge of Israel.

¹² He replied, “Elijah does indeed come first, and he restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected?

⁶⁵ Then some of them began to spit on Him. They blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and said to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in His face.

⁶³ The men who were holding Jesus began to mock Him and beat Him.

³⁶ The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine.

⁴ And what was the divine reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

¹⁰ Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why do you belittle your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. ¹¹ It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.”

¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

² Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ³ Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

¹³ Therefore let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace He bore.

³¹ After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him. ³² Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.

²⁷ And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.

²⁶ As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.

¹⁸ If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. ¹⁹ If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. ²⁰ Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they kept My word, they will keep yours as well.

⁹ But resistance arose from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and men from the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. They began to argue with Stephen,

²⁰ But some of them, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus.

¹ Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch), and Saul.

¹³ Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.

³³ And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull, ³⁴ they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it. ³⁵ When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots. ³⁶ And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. ³⁷ Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. ³⁸ Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right hand and the other on His left. ³⁹ And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” ⁴¹ In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying, ⁴² “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴ In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.

²⁷ A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him. ²⁸ But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. ²⁹ Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’ ³⁰ At that time ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’ ³¹ For if men do these things while the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?” ³² Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus. ³³ When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right and the other on His left. ³⁴ Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots. ³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.” ³⁶ The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine. ³⁷ “If You are the King of the Jews,” they said, “save Yourself!” ³⁸ Above Him was posted an inscription: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

¹⁷ Carrying His own cross, He went out to The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. ¹⁸ There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle. ¹⁹ Pilate also had a notice posted on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but only that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’” ²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” ²³ When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. ²⁴ So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.” So that is what the soldiers did. ²⁵ Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” ²⁷ Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.

¹⁹ So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

³⁴ they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.

²⁵ Truly I tell you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”

¹⁸ For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”

²⁸ After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” ²⁹ A jar of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth. ³⁰ When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.

²³ you must not leave the body on the tree overnight, but you must be sure to bury him that day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

¹⁶ For dogs surround me; a band of evil men encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet. ¹⁷ I can count all my bones; they stare and gloat over me. ¹⁸ They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.

¹³ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

⁵ Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam, and the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you.

⁶ “I have installed My King on Zion, upon My holy mountain.”

¹⁰ Even the wrath of man shall praise You; with the survivors of wrath You will clothe Yourself.

¹ The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it where He pleases.

⁷ But this is not his intention; this is not his plan. For it is in his heart to destroy and cut off many nations.

¹⁰ I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will accomplish.’

¹⁵ But when I stumbled, they assembled in glee; they gathered together against me. Rescue my soul from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. ¹⁸ Then I will give You thanks in the great assembly; I will praise You among many people. ¹⁹ Let not my enemies gloat over me without cause, nor those who hate me without reason wink in malice. ²⁰ For they do not speak peace, but they devise deceitful schemes against those who live quietly in the land. ²¹ They gape at me and say, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen!”

⁷ For I have endured scorn for Your sake, and shame has covered my face.

²⁶ For they persecute the one You struck and recount the pain of those You wounded.

²⁵ I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads.

¹² Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see! Is there any sorrow like mine, which was inflicted on me, which the LORD made me suffer on the day of His fierce anger?

¹⁵ All who pass by clap their hands at you in scorn. They hiss and shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”

⁶¹ and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

³⁹ And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

⁵⁸ “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple, and in three days I will build another that is made without hands.’”

¹⁸ On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?” ¹⁹ Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” ²⁰ “This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?” ²¹ But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body. ²² After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

¹ Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? ² The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together, against the LORD and against His Anointed One: ³ “Let us break Their chains and cast away Their cords.” ⁴ The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord taunts them.

⁴¹ In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying,

³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” ⁴⁹ But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! ⁵⁰ You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” ⁵¹ Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation, ⁵² and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one.

²³ But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. ²⁴ Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

¹⁷ For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. ¹⁸ For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit,

⁶ Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel, the LORD of Hosts: “I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God but Me.

¹⁵ The LORD has taken away your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; no longer will you fear any harm.

¹⁷ In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

⁴⁴ In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.

⁶¹ But Jesus remained silent and made no reply. Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” ⁶² “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

³⁹ One of the criminals who hung there heaped abuse on Him. “Are You not the Christ?” he said. “Save Yourself and us!” ⁴⁰ But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment? ⁴¹ We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” ⁴² Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” ⁴³ And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

⁴⁹ “Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

¹³ They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”

²⁵ So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.” ²⁶ Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” ²⁷ Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” ²⁸ Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” ²⁹ Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

³ What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God’s faithfulness?

¹⁸ who have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some.

²⁸ He sent darkness, and it became dark—yet they defied His words.

³ I clothe the heavens in black and make sackcloth their covering.” ⁴ The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship, to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

⁹ And in that day, declares the Lord GOD, I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the daytime. ¹⁰ I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth and every head to be shaved. I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, and its outcome like a bitter day.

²⁵ It was the third hour when they crucified Him.

⁴⁴ It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour. ⁴⁵ The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.

¹ For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Doe of the Dawn.” A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from saving me, so far from my words of groaning?

⁹ Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger. You have been my helper; do not leave me or forsake me, O God of my salvation.

⁹ I say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why must I walk in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?”

¹¹ saying, “God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him, for there is no one to rescue him.”

¹⁷ The poor and needy seek water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

²⁰ Why have You forgotten us forever? Why have You forsaken us for so long?

²¹ while I was still praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.

⁴⁶ About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

⁴⁶ Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.

³ One day at about the ninth hour, he had a clear vision of an angel of God who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”

⁷ During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.

¹¹ Jesus replied, “Elijah does indeed come, and he will restore all things. ¹² But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wished. In the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.” ¹³ Then the disciples understood that He was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

⁴⁷ When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah.” ⁴⁸ One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink. ⁴⁹ But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”

¹¹ And they asked Jesus, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” ¹² He replied, “Elijah does indeed come first, and he restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected? ¹³ But I tell you that Elijah has indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they wished, just as it is written about him.”

²¹ They poisoned my food with gall and gave me vinegar to quench my thirst.

²³ There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.

⁵⁰ When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.

³⁰ When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.

³¹ Make a veil of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely spun linen, with cherubim skillfully worked into it. ³² Hang it with gold hooks on four posts of acacia wood, overlaid with gold and standing on four silver bases. ³³ And hang the veil from the clasps and place the ark of the Testimony behind the veil. So the veil will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. ³⁴ Put the mercy seat on the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy Place.

²⁰ Moses took the Testimony and placed it in the ark, attaching the poles to the ark; and he set the mercy seat atop the ark. ²¹ Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle, put up the veil for the screen, and shielded off the ark of the Testimony, just as the LORD had commanded him.

² And the LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron not to enter freely into the Most Holy Place behind the veil in front of the mercy seat on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. ³ This is how Aaron is to enter the Holy Place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. ⁴ He is to wear the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments. He must tie a linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are holy garments, and he must bathe himself with water before he wears them. ⁵ And he shall take from the congregation of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. ⁶ Aaron is to present the bull for his sin offering and make atonement for himself and his household. ⁷ Then he shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. ⁸ After Aaron casts lots for the two goats, one for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat, ⁹ he shall present the goat chosen by lot for the LORD and sacrifice it as a sin offering. ¹⁰ But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement by sending it into the wilderness as the scapegoat. ¹¹ When Aaron presents the bull for his sin offering and makes atonement for himself and his household, he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. ¹² Then he must take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense, and take them inside the veil. ¹³ He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the cloud of incense will cover the mercy seat above the Testimony, so that he will not die. ¹⁴ And he is to take some of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the mercy seat; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the mercy seat. ¹⁵ Aaron shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and bring its blood behind the veil, and with its blood he must do as he did with the bull’s blood: He is to sprinkle it against the mercy seat and in front of it. ¹⁶ So he shall make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the impurities and rebellious acts of the Israelites in regard to all their sins. He is to do the same for the Tent of Meeting which abides among them, because it is surrounded by their impurities. ¹⁷ No one may be in the Tent of Meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he leaves, after he has made atonement for himself, his household, and the whole assembly of Israel. ¹⁸ Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He is to take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar. ¹⁹ He is to sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.

⁸ Then he made the Most Holy Place; its length corresponded to the width of the temple—twenty cubits long and twenty cubits wide. And he overlaid the inside with six hundred talents of fine gold. ⁹ The weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold. He also overlaid the upper area with gold. ¹⁰ In the Most Holy Place he made two cherubim of sculptured work, and he overlaid them with gold. ¹¹ The total wingspan of the cherubim was twenty cubits. One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long and touched the wall of the temple, and its other wing was five cubits long and touched the wing of the other cherub. ¹² The wing of the second cherub also measured five cubits and touched the wall of the temple, while its other wing measured five cubits and touched the wing of the first cherub. ¹³ So the total wingspan of these cherubim was twenty cubits. They stood on their feet, facing the main room. ¹⁴ He made the veil of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen, with cherubim woven into it.

⁵¹ At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split. ⁵² The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. ⁵³ After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.

⁴⁵ The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.

¹⁴ Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess. ¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. ¹⁶ Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

¹⁹ We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,

³ Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, ⁴ containing the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. Inside the ark were the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. ⁵ Above the ark were the cherubim of glory, overshadowing the mercy seat. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now. ⁶ When everything had been prepared in this way, the priests entered regularly into the first room to perform their sacred duties. ⁷ But only the high priest entered the second room, and then only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. ⁸ By this arrangement the Holy Spirit was showing that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing. ⁹ It is an illustration for the present time, because the gifts and sacrifices being offered were unable to cleanse the conscience of the worshiper. ¹⁰ They consist only in food and drink and special washings—external regulations imposed until the time of reform. ¹¹ But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands and is not a part of this creation. ¹² He did not enter by the blood of goats and calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption.

¹⁹ Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰ by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body, ²¹ and since we have a great priest over the house of God, ²² let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. ²³ Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.

⁵ When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came and pleaded with Him, ⁶ “Lord, my servant lies at home, paralyzed and in terrible agony.” ⁷ “I will go and heal him,” Jesus replied. ⁸ The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. ⁹ For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes; and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.” ¹⁰ When Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

⁴⁴ Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so. ⁴⁵ When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

⁴⁷ When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.” ⁴⁸ And when all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts.

¹ When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment. ² We boarded an Adramyttian ship about to sail for ports along the coast of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us. ³ The next day we landed at Sidon, and Julius treated Paul with consideration, allowing him to visit his friends and receive their care.

⁴³ But the centurion, wanting to spare Paul’s life, thwarted their plan. He commanded those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.

¹¹ My beloved and friends shun my disease, and my kinsmen stand at a distance.

⁵⁵ “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?

⁵⁵ And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him. ⁵⁶ Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

⁶¹ Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

¹ After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

⁴⁷ Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was placed.

⁹ Early on the first day of the week, after Jesus had risen, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had driven out seven demons.

² as well as some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, ³ Joanna the wife of Herod’s household manager Chuza, Susanna, and many others. These women were ministering to them out of their own means.

⁴⁹ But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.

¹¹ But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent down to look into the tomb, ¹² and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and the other at the feet. ¹³ “Woman, why are you weeping?” they asked. “Because they have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.” ¹⁴ When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ “Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.” ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). ¹⁷ “Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’” ¹⁸ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what He had said to her.

⁵ Have we no right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas?

⁵⁷ When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus. ⁵⁸ He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. ⁵⁹ So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, ⁶⁰ and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away. ⁶¹ Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. ⁶² The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate.

⁵⁰ Now there was a Council member named Joseph, a good and righteous man, ⁵¹ who had not consented to their decision or action. He was from the Judean town of Arimathea, and was waiting for the kingdom of God. ⁵² He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. ⁵³ Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid. ⁵⁴ It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was beginning. ⁵⁵ The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed. ⁵⁶ Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.

³¹ It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.

³⁸ Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body. ³⁹ Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. ⁴⁰ So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. ⁴¹ Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. ⁴² And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.

³⁰ But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

¹⁶ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

⁵⁷ When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.

²³ Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” ²⁴ And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” ²⁶ They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?” ²⁷ Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

⁵⁴ Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the officers and warmed himself by the fire.

⁶⁶ While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the servant girls of the high priest came down ⁶⁷ and saw him warming himself there. She looked at Peter and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.” ⁶⁸ But he denied it. “I do not know or even understand what you are talking about,” he said. Then he went out to the gateway, and the rooster crowed. ⁶⁹ There the servant girl saw him and again said to those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.” ⁷⁰ But he denied it again. After a little while, those standing nearby said once more to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you too are a Galilean.” ⁷¹ But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” ⁷² And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

²⁵ Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

³⁸ Coming forward at that moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people! ⁹ If we are being examined today about a kind service to a man who was lame, to determine how he was healed, ¹⁰ then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. ¹¹ This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ ¹² Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” ¹³ When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus.

⁵⁰ The Jews, however, incited the religious women of prominence and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their district.

¹² As a result, many of them believed, along with quite a few prominent Greek women and men.

¹⁴ And most of the brothers, confident in the Lord by my chains, now dare more greatly to speak the word without fear.

³¹ It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed. ³² So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and those of the other. ³³ But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. ³⁴ Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. ³⁵ The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. ³⁶ Now these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.” ³⁷ And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on the One they have pierced.”

⁵⁸ He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

³⁹ When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

¹⁶ What are you doing here, and who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here—to chisel your tomb in the height and cut your resting place in the rock?

⁵⁹ So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, ⁶⁰ and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.

² Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat on it.

³ They were asking one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb?” ⁴ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, even though it was extremely large.

⁵³ Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid.

³⁸ Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.

⁴⁰ And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

¹ When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go and anoint the body of Jesus.

⁵⁵ The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed.
