Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. ² Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity, ³ who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows, ⁴ ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear. ⁵ They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say. ⁶ They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious. ⁷ But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded. ⁸ They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads. ⁹ Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done. ¹⁰ Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult.

⁸ Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings ⁹ from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.

⁷ Hear, O LORD, my voice when I call; be merciful and answer me.

¹³ For I hear the slander of many; there is terror on every side. They conspire against me and plot to take my life. ¹⁴ But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” ¹⁵ My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.

⁴ I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.

² My enemies pursue me all day long, for many proudly assail me. ³ When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. ⁴ In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

¹ A song of ascents. Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD! ² O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive to my plea for mercy.

In Your faithfulness, give ear to my plea; in Your righteousness, answer me. ² Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous before You. ³ For the enemy has pursued my soul, crushing my life to the ground, making me dwell in darkness like those long since dead.

⁵⁵ I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the depths of the Pit. ⁵⁶ You heard my plea: “Do not ignore my cry for relief.”

⁹ One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent. ¹⁰ For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you, because I have many people in this city.”

²⁴ and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you the lives of all who sail with you.’

⁶ “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?

²² Please go and prepare further. Investigate and watch carefully where he goes and who has seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely cunning. ²³ Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”

² I will attack him while he is weak and weary; I will throw him into a panic, and all the people with him will flee; I will strike down only the king ³ and bring all the people back to you as a bride returning to her husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.” ⁴ This proposal seemed good to Absalom and all the elders of Israel.

² The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together, against the LORD and against His Anointed One:

¹ A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom. O LORD, how my foes have increased! How many rise up against me!

⁵ For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will set me high upon a rock.

²⁰ You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the schemes of men. You conceal them in Your shelter from accusing tongues.

⁶ They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps while they wait to take my life.

² Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed.

² For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. ³ They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause.

⁹ Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD; I flee to You for refuge.

² Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry land, like the shadow of a great rock in an arid land.

¹⁹ For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had plotted against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”

²³ But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me. Do not wipe out their guilt or blot out their sin from Your sight. Let them be overthrown before You; deal with them in the time of Your anger.

³ At that time the chief priests and elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ⁴ and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.

¹⁸ But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” ¹⁹ (Barabbas had been imprisoned for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) ²⁰ Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again, ²¹ but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” ²² A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release Him.” ²³ But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices for Jesus to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed.

¹⁴ They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.”

³ to grant them a concession against Paul by summoning him to Jerusalem, because they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.

² For behold, the wicked bend their bows. They set their arrow on the string to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.

⁴ My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts—with men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.

⁷ May they vanish like water that runs off; when they draw the bow, may their arrows be blunted.

¹⁸ Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

¹⁴ there is a generation whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are knives, devouring the oppressed from the earth and the needy from among men.

¹⁷ No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.

³ “They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth in the land. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.

⁶ The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷ All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, ⁸ but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

¹¹ and he hurled it, thinking, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.

¹⁰ Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear. But the spear struck the wall and David eluded him, ran away, and escaped that night.

¹⁴ And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us flee, or we will not escape from Absalom! We must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us, heap disaster on us, and put the city to the sword.”

¹¹ And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”

⁸ He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in stealth for the helpless. ⁹ He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket; he lurks to seize the oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net.

¹⁹ God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.

³ See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD. ⁴ For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice.

⁷ But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded.

¹⁴ With his own spear You pierced his head, when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though ready to secretly devour the weak.

⁶ As soon as the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” “You take Him and crucify Him,” Pilate replied, “for I find no basis for a charge against Him.”

²² “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.” ²³ When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.

⁹ The enemy declared, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them.’

⁶ So please come now and put a curse on this people, because they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land; for I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.”

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon? ²⁰ Now, O king, come down whenever your soul desires, and we will be responsible for delivering him into your hand.” ²¹ “May you be blessed by the LORD,” replied Saul, “for you have had compassion on me.

¹³ Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness?

¹¹ He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never sees.”

⁷ See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?”

⁷ They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob pays no heed.”

⁷ We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; the net is torn, and we have slipped away.

⁵ The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net are spread along the path, and lures are set out for me. Selah

¹¹ If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause, ¹² let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those descending into the Pit. ¹³ We will find all manner of precious goods; we will fill our houses with plunder. ¹⁴ Throw in your lot with us; let us all share one purse”—

⁶ Each one helps the other and says to his brother, “Be strong!”

¹² “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’”

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You traverse land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

¹⁰ And those who dwell on the earth will gloat over them, and will celebrate and send one another gifts, because these two prophets had tormented them.

⁹ But Doeg the Edomite, who had stationed himself with Saul’s servants, answered: “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.

⁹ and said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Look, David intends to harm you’?

¹⁰ But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.

⁹ For not a word they speak can be trusted; destruction lies within them. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.

¹¹ Hostile witnesses come forward; they make charges I know nothing about.

¹¹ Their graves are their eternal homes—their dwellings for endless generations—even though their lands were their namesakes.

⁵ The intentions of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.

¹⁵ Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD. In darkness they do their works and say, “Who sees us, and who will know?”

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? ¹⁰ I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.

⁴ Thus the administrators and satraps sought a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom, but they could find no charge or corruption, because he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was found in him. ⁵ Finally these men said, “We will never find any charge against this Daniel, unless we find something against him concerning the law of his God.”

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death.

²⁹ So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?” ³⁰ “If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”

⁷ “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

²³ I will heap disasters upon them; I will spend My arrows against them.

⁴² I will make My arrows drunk with blood, while My sword devours flesh—the blood of the slain and captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.”

³⁴ However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. So the king said to his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”

³ When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him. ⁴ Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these uncircumcised men will come and torture me!” But his armor-bearer was terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. ⁵ When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died. ⁶ So Saul died together with his three sons and all his house. ⁷ When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

¹² If one does not repent, God will sharpen His sword; He has bent and strung His bow. ¹³ He has prepared His deadly weapons; He ordains His arrows with fire.

¹⁴ He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them.

⁴ ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear.

¹⁹ How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away by terrors!

¹⁵ Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in an instant he will be shattered beyond recovery.

¹ A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof will suddenly be shattered beyond recovery.

¹³ this iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail, a bulge in a high wall, whose collapse will come suddenly—in an instant!

¹² He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow. ¹³ He pierced my kidneys with His arrows.

⁴⁰ Two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left.

⁵⁰ The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not anticipate. ⁵¹ Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

² For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

³⁴ At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled, saying, “The earth may swallow us too!”

⁶ Your own mouth, not mine, condemns you; your own lips testify against you.

³ When my enemies retreat, they stumble and perish before You.

⁷ All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:

¹¹ Among all my enemies I am a disgrace, and among my neighbors even more. I am dreaded by my friends—they flee when they see me on the street.

⁶ The righteous will see and fear; they will mock the evildoer, saying,

¹² By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter.

⁹ May the heads of those who surround me be covered in the trouble their lips have caused.

¹³ An evil man is trapped by his rebellious speech, but a righteous man escapes from trouble.

⁷ A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

¹⁶ They have made their land a desolation, a perpetual object of scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and shake their heads.

²⁷ Was not Israel your object of ridicule? Was he ever found among thieves? For whenever you speak of him you shake your head.

⁷ Then all who see you will recoil from you and say, ‘Nineveh is devastated; who will grieve for her?’ Where can I find comforters for you?”

⁴¹ “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and will rent out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him his share of the fruit at harvest time.”

²² His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?

⁴ Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins or contract any of her plagues.

¹⁰ In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

³ He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

⁵ There they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to fear. For God has scattered the bones of those who besieged you. You put them to shame, for God has despised them.

¹¹ Then men will say, “There is surely a reward for the righteous! There is surely a God who judges the earth!”

⁴² The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth. ⁴³ Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.

²⁰ My soul is consumed with longing for Your judgments at all times.

¹² At their feasts are the lyre and harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and fail to see the work of His hands.

²⁸ Listen to the fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon, declaring in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance for His temple.

¹⁰ “The LORD has brought forth our vindication; come, let us tell in Zion what the LORD our God has accomplished.”

²³ They will bring you consolation when you see their conduct and actions, and you will know that it was not without cause that I have done all these things within it,’ declares the Lord GOD.”

⁹ Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them but the rebellious stumble in them.

¹³ And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand were killed in the quake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁹ The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent mock them:

¹ For the choirmaster. Of David. In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain!

²⁰ Guard my soul and deliver me; let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in You.

¹¹ Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous ones; shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

¹⁰ The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged; they will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked.

² As smoke is blown away, You will drive them out; as wax melts before the fire, the wicked will perish in the presence of God. ³ But the righteous will be glad and rejoice before God; they will celebrate with joy.

¹¹ Light shines on the righteous, gladness on the upright in heart.

² His descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

³⁰ It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. ³¹ Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

¹⁴ But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
