¹ And David came to Nob, to Abimelech the priest. And Abimelech was amazed at meeting him, and said to him, Why are you alone, and no one is with you? ² And David said to the priest, The king gave me a command today, and said to me, Let no one know the matter on which I send you, and concerning which I have charged you: and I have charged my servants to be in the place that is called, The Faithfulness of God, Phellani Maemoni. ³ And now if there are under your hand five loaves, give into my hand what is ready. ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There are no common loaves under my hand, for I have none but holy loaves: if the young men have been kept at least from women, then they shall eat them. ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, Yes, we have been kept from women for three days: when I came forth for the journey all the young men were purified; but this expedition is unclean, wherefore it shall be sanctified this day because of my weapons. ⁶ So Abimelech the priest gave him the showbread; for there were no loaves there, but only the presence loaves which had been removed from the presence of the Lord, in order that hot bread should be set on, on the day on which he took them. ⁷ And one of Saul's servants was there on that day, detained before the Lord, and his name was Doeg the Syrian, tending the mules of Saul. ⁸ And David said to Abimelech, See if there is here under your hand spear or sword, for I have not brought in my hand my sword or my weapons, for the word of the king was urgent. ⁹ And the priest said, Behold the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah; and it is wrapped in a cloth. If you will take it, take it for yourself, for there is no other weapon except that here. And David said, Behold, there is none like it; give it to me. ¹⁰ And he gave it to him. And David arose, and fled in that day from the presence of Saul. And David came to Achish king of Gath. ¹¹ And the servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David the king of the land? Did not the dancing women begin the song to him, saying, Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands? ¹² And David laid up the words in his heart, and was greatly afraid of Achish king of Gath. ¹³ And he changed his appearance before him, and feigned himself a false character in that day; and drummed upon the doors of the city, and used extravagant gestures with his hands, and fell against the doors of the gate, and his spittle ran down upon his beard. ¹⁴ And Achish said to his servants, Lo! You see the man is mad; why have you brought him in to me? ¹⁵ Am I in need of madmen, that you have brought him in to me to play the madman? He shall not come into the house

³ And Ahijah son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, God's priest in Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

⁴ And Samuel did all that the Lord told him; and he came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city were trembling at meeting him, and said, Do you come peaceably, O Seer?

⁹ And Doeg the Syrian who was over the mules of Saul answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse as he came to Nob, to Abimelech son of Ahitub the priest. ¹⁰ And the priest inquired of God for him, and gave him provision, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. ¹¹ And the king sent to call Abimelech son of Ahitub and all his father's sons, the priests that were in Nob; and they all came to the king. ¹² And Saul said, Hear now, you son of Ahitub. And he said, Behold, I am here, speak, my lord. ¹³ And Saul said to him, Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me, that you should give him bread and a sword, and should inquire of God for him, to raise him up against me as an enemy, as he is this day? ¹⁴ And he answered the king, and said, And who is there among all your servants as faithful as David, and he is a son-in-law of the king, and he is executor of all your commands, and is honorable in your house? ¹⁵ Have I begun today to inquire of God for him? By no means: let not the king bring a charge against his servant, and against any of my father's house, for your servant knew not in all these matters anything great or small. ¹⁶ And King Saul said, You shall surely die, Abimelech; you and all your father's house. ¹⁷ And the king said to the footmen that attended on him, Come here and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and they did not inform me. But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to fall upon the priest of the Lord. ¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, Turn, and fall upon the priests: and Doeg the Syrian turned, and killed the priests of the Lord in that day, three hundred and five men, all wearing an ephod. ¹⁹ And he struck Nob, the city of the priest, with the edge of the sword, both man and woman, infant and suckling, calf and ox, and also sheep.

³² Exhort them today to remain in the way; exhort, beckoning the mountain with your hand, the daughter of Zion, even you hills that are in Jerusalem.

²⁶ How he entered into the house of God at the time Abiathar was high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat, except for the priests, and also gave to those who were with him?"

²⁰ And Isaac said to his son, What is this which you have quickly found? And he said, That which the Lord your God presented before me.

²⁴ and he said, Are you my son Esau? And he said, I am.

¹⁷ And Saul said to Michal, Why have you thus deceived me, and allowed my enemy to depart, and he has escaped? And Michal said to Saul, He said, let me go, and if not, I will kill you.

²² And David said to Abiathar, I knew it in that day, that Doeg the Syrian would surely tell Saul: I am guilty of the death of the house of your father.

¹⁸ And he said to him, I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back to you into your house, and let him eat bread and drink water; but he lied to him.

²⁹ Remove from me the way of iniquity; and be merciful to me by Your law.

¹² For before certain men came from James, he would eat together with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to draw back and began to separate himself, fearing those of the circumcision party.

⁹ Do not lie to one another, since you have stripped off the old man with his practices,

²⁹ If only this people were under my hand! Then would I remove Abimelech, and I would say to him, Multiply your host, and come out.

⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There are no common loaves under my hand, for I have none but holy loaves: if the young men have been kept at least from women, then they shall eat them.

⁶ For a man shall lay hold of his brother, as one of his father's household, saying, You have clothing, you be our ruler, and let my food be under your power.

¹⁵ And he said to the people, Be ready: for three days do not come near to a woman.

³⁰ And you shall set upon the table showbread before Me continually.

⁵ And you shall take fine flour, and make of it twelve loaves; each loaf shall be of two tenth parts. ⁶ And you shall put them in two rows, each row containing six loaves, on the pure table before the Lord. ⁷ And you shall put on each row pure frankincense and salt; and these things shall be for loaves for a memorial, set forth before the Lord. ⁸ On the Sabbath day they shall be set forth before the Lord continually before the children of Israel, for an everlasting covenant. ⁹ And they shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat them in the holy place: for this is their most holy portion of the offerings made to the Lord, a perpetual statute.

⁶ So Abimelech the priest gave him the showbread; for there were no loaves there, but only the presence loaves which had been removed from the presence of the Lord, in order that hot bread should be set on, on the day on which he took them.

³ speaking to the priests that were in the house of the Lord Almighty, and to the prophets, saying, The holy offering has come in here in the fifth month, as it has done already many years.

³ But He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he became hungry, he and those who were with him: ⁴ how they entered the house of God, and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, except only for the priests?

⁵ Do not deprive one another, except by mutual agreement, and that for a season, so that you may devote yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, lest Satan tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

²⁶ and put them all on the hands of Aaron, and upon the hands of his sons, and offered them up for a wave-offering before the Lord.

⁹ And they shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat them in the holy place: for this is their most holy portion of the offerings made to the Lord, a perpetual statute.

¹⁵ But the Lord said to him, "Go your way, for he is a chosen vessel to Me to bear My name before Gentiles and kings, and the sons of Israel.

³ For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from fornication, ⁴ that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,

²⁰ Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. ²¹ Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, having been consecrated and useful to the Master, having been prepared for every good work.

¹⁷ For it is better to suffer for doing good, if it is the will of God, than for doing evil.

²⁵ But He said to them, "Did you not read what David did when he had need, and became hungry, he and those with him? ²⁶ How he entered into the house of God at the time Abiathar was high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat, except for the priests, and also gave to those who were with him?" ²⁷ And He said to them, "The Sabbath came into being for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of the Sabbath.

³ But Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read this, what David did when he became hungry, he and those who were with him: ⁴ how he entered into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?"

⁷ And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle, and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle, and the Canaanites and the Perizzites then inhabited the land. ⁸ And Abram said to Lot, Let there not be strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers.

²⁰ And the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with the shepherds of Isaac, saying that the water was theirs; and they called the name of the well, Injury, for they injured him.

⁵ And behold, Saul came out of the field after the early morning. And Saul said, Why do the people weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

⁴⁷ So Saul received the kingdom. By lot he inherited the office of ruling over Israel. And he fought against all his enemies round about, against Moab, against the children of Ammon, against the children of Edom, against Beth Hor, against the king of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he was victorious.

⁹ And Doeg the Syrian who was over the mules of Saul answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse as he came to Nob, to Abimelech son of Ahitub the priest.

²⁹ And over the oxen that fed in Sharon was Satrai the Sharonite; and over the oxen in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai.

¹⁰ And he built towers in the wilderness, and dug many wells, for he had many cattle in the low country and in the plain; and vinedressers in the mountain country and in Carmel, for he was a farmer.

¹ For the end, A Psalm of instruction by David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said to him, David has gone to the house of Abimelech. Why do you, O mighty man, boast of iniquity in your mischief? All the day ² your tongue has devised unrighteousness; like a sharpened razor you have worked deceit. ³ You have loved wickedness more than goodness; unrighteousness better than to speak righteousness. Pause. ⁴ You have loved all words of destruction, and a deceitful tongue. ⁵ Therefore may God destroy you forever, may He pluck you up and utterly remove you from your dwelling, and your root from the land of the living. Pause. ⁶ And the righteous shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, and say, ⁷ Behold, the man who made not God his help; but trusted in the abundance of his wealth, and strengthened himself in his vanity. ⁸ But I am as a fruitful olive in the house of God; I have trusted in the mercy of God forever, even forevermore. ⁹ I will give thanks to You forever, for You have done it; and I will wait on Your name; for it is good before the saints.

⁹ and you murder, and commit adultery, and steal, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and have gone after strange gods whom you know not, ¹⁰ so that it is evil with you; yet have you come, and stood before Me in the house which is called by My name, and you have said, We have refrained from doing all these abominations. ¹¹ Is My house, which is called by My name, a den of robbers in your eyes? And behold, I have seen it, says the Lord.

³¹ They approach you as a people that come together, and sit before you, and hear your words, but they will not do them; for there is falsehood in their mouth, and their heart goes after their pollutions.

⁵ saying, When will the month pass away, and we shall sell, and the sabbath, and we shall open the treasure, to make the measure small, and to enlarge the weight, and make the balance unfair?

⁸ 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and they honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me.

²⁶ Then Paul, having taken the men, on the next day having been purified with them, entered into the temple, thus giving notice to the completion of the days of the purification, until the time when the offering was offered in behalf of each one of them. ²⁷ Now when the seven days were about to be completed, the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, were stirring up all the crowd and put their hands on him,

⁶ And they shall make the ephod of fine linen spun, the woven work of the embroiderer. ⁷ It shall have two shoulder-pieces joined together, fastened on the two sides. ⁸ And the woven work of the ephod which is upon it shall be of one piece according to the work, of pure gold, blue, purple, and spun scarlet and fine twined linen. ⁹ And you shall take the two stones, the stones of emerald, and you shall engrave on them the names of the children of Israel. ¹⁰ Six names on the first stone, and the other six names on the second stone, according to their births. ¹¹ It shall be the work of the stone engraver's art; as the engraving of a seal you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel. ¹² And you shall put the two stones on the shoulders of the ephod, for they are memorial stones for the children of Israel; and Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel before the Lord on his two shoulders, as a memorial for them. ¹³ And you shall make settings of pure gold. ¹⁴ And you shall make two chains of pure gold like braided cords, and fasten the braided chains to the settings.

² And Saul and the men of Israel gathered together, and they encamped in the valley, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

⁵⁰ (TEXT OMITTED) ⁵¹ And David ran, and stood upon him, and took his sword, and killed him, and cut off his head. And the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, and they fled. ⁵² And the men of Israel and Judah arose, and shouted and pursued them as far as the entrance to Gath, and as far as the gate of Ashkelon. And the slain men of the Philistines fell in the way of the gates, both to Gath, and to Ekron. ⁵³ And the men of Israel returned from pursuing after the Philistines, and they destroyed their camp. ⁵⁴ And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent.

¹⁰ And they set up his armor at the temple of Ashtoreth, and they fastened his body on the wall of Beth Shan.

¹ And David said in his heart, Now shall I be one day delivered for death into the hands of Saul; and there is nothing better for me unless I should escape into the land of the Philistines, and Saul should cease from seeking me through every coast of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand. ² So David arose, and the six hundred men that were with him, and he went to Achish, son of Maoch, king of Gath.

³ And Elijah feared, and rose, and departed for his life. And he came to Beersheba, to the land of Judah, and he left his servant there.

¹ A Psalm of David, when he changed his countenance before Abimelech; and he let him go, and he departed. I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall be continually in my mouth. ² My soul shall boast in the Lord; let the meek hear, and rejoice. ³ Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. ⁴ I sought the Lord diligently, and He hearkened to me, and delivered me from all my sojournings. ⁵ Draw near to Him, and be enlightened; and your faces shall by no means be ashamed. ⁶ This poor man cried, and the Lord hearkened to him, and delivered him out of all his afflictions. ⁷ The angel of the Lord will encamp round about them that fear Him, and will deliver them. ⁸ Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who hopes in Him. ⁹ Fear the Lord, all you His saints; for there is no lack to them that fear Him. ¹⁰ The rich have become poor and hungry; but they that seek the Lord diligently shall not lack any good thing. Pause. ¹¹ Come, you children, hear me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. ¹² What man is there that desires life, loving to see good days? ¹³ Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile. ¹⁴ Turn away from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. ¹⁵ The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayer; ¹⁶ but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to destroy their memorial from the earth. The righteous cried, and the Lord hearkened to them, ¹⁷ and delivered them out of all their afflictions. ¹⁸ The Lord is near to them that are of a contrite heart; and will save the lowly in spirit. ¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but out of them all the Lord shall deliver them. ²⁰ He keeps all their bones; not one of them shall be broken. ²¹ The death of sinners is evil; and they that hate righteousness will go wrong. ²² The Lord will redeem the souls of His servants; and none of those that hope in Him shall go wrong.

²¹ And King Jehoiakim and all the princes heard all his words, and sought to kill him; and Urijah heard it and went to Egypt.

¹ And the Lord said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse, to Bethlehem; for I have seen among his sons a king for Me.

⁷ And the women began this song, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. ⁸ And it seemed evil in the eyes of Saul concerning this matter, and he said, To David they have given ten thousands, and to me they have given thousands?

⁵ Is not this David whom they celebrated in dances, saying, Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

¹ For the end, concerning the people that were removed from the sanctuary, by David for a memorial, when the Philistines caught him in Gath. Have mercy upon me, O God; for man has trodden me down; all the day long his warring has afflicted me. ² My enemies have trodden me down all the day from the dawning of the day; for there are many warring against me. ³ They shall be afraid, but I will trust in You. ⁴ In God (I will praise His word); all the day long have I hoped in God; I will not fear; what shall man do to me? ⁵ All the day long they have abominated my words; all their devices are against me for evil. ⁶ They will dwell near and hide themselves; they will watch my steps, accordingly as I have waited patiently in my soul. ⁷ You will by no means save them; You will bring down the people in wrath. ⁸ O God, I have declared my life to You; You have set my tears before You, even according to Your promise. ⁹ My enemies shall be turned back, in the day that I shall call upon You; behold, I know that You are my God. ¹⁰ In God, (I will praise His word); in the Lord (I will praise His word). ¹¹ I have hoped in God; I will not be afraid; what shall man do to me? ¹² The vows of Your praise, O God, which I will pay, are upon me. ¹³ For You have delivered my soul from death, and my feet from sliding, that I should be well-pleasing before God in the land of the living.

¹¹ And it came to pass when Abram approached Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, I know that you are a beautiful woman. ¹² It shall come to pass then, that when the Egyptians shall see you, that they shall say, This is his wife, and they shall kill me, but they shall keep you alive. ¹³ Say, therefore, I am his sister, that it may be well with me on account of you, and my soul shall live because of you.

⁷ And the men of the place questioned him concerning Rebecca his wife, and he said, She is my sister (for he feared to say, She is my wife, lest at any time the men of the place should kill him because of Rebecca, because she was beautiful).

¹⁰ And he gave it to him. And David arose, and fled in that day from the presence of Saul. And David came to Achish king of Gath.

⁴ I sought the Lord diligently, and He hearkened to me, and delivered me from all my sojournings.

³ They shall be afraid, but I will trust in You.

¹¹ I have hidden Your oracles in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

¹⁹ But Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.

⁵¹ Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And His mother kept all these things in her heart.

²⁵ Those fearing and reverencing men unreasonably have been overthrown, but he that trusts in the Lord shall rejoice. Ungodliness causes a man to stumble, but he that trusts in his master shall be safe.

⁷ For oppression makes a wise man mad, and destroys his noble heart.
