¹ Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. ² Receive us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have defrauded no one. ³ I do not speak to condemn you; for I have said before that you are in our hearts, so that we die together and we live together. ⁴ Great is my confidence toward you, great is my boasting concerning you. I have been filled with comfort. I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation. ⁵ For indeed, when we came to Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted on every side; outside were fightings, inside were fears. ⁶ Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, ⁷ and not only by his coming, but also by the consolation with which he was comforted over you, as he reported to us your earnest longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more. ⁸ Because even if I made you sorry in the letter, I do not regret it, even if I did regret it. For I perceive that the same letter made you sorry, though only for a season. ⁹ Now I rejoice, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led to repentance; for you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. ¹⁰ For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, without regret; but worldly sorrow produces death. ¹¹ For behold this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner, how much diligence it produced in you, even an eagerness to defend, even indignation, even fear, even longing, even zeal, even vengeance! In all things you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in this matter. ¹² Therefore, although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of him who did the wrong, nor for the sake of him who was wronged, but so that your diligence on our behalf might be made known to you before God. ¹³ Because of this we have been comforted. And in your comfort we rejoiced exceedingly more over the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. ¹⁴ Because if in anything I have boasted to him concerning you, I was not put to shame, but as we spoke all things to you in truth, thus also our boasting to Titus became truth. ¹⁵ And his affections are far greater toward you as he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him. ¹⁶ Therefore I rejoice that in everything I am confident in you.

⁹ And he charged them, saying, Thus shall you do in the fear of the Lord, in truth and with a perfect heart.

⁴ Then there assembled to me all that followed the word of the God of Israel, on account of the transgression of the captivity; and I remained mourning until the evening sacrifice.

⁹ So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. This was the ninth month. On the twentieth day of the month all the people sat down in the street of the house of the Lord, because of their alarm concerning the word, and because of the storm.

And I appointed against them a great assembly, ⁸ and I said to them, We of our free will have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the Gentiles; and do you sell your brothers? And shall they be delivered to us? And they were silent, and found no answer. ⁹ And I said, The thing which you do is not good; you will not so walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the Gentiles our enemies. ¹⁰ Both my brothers, and my acquaintances, and I, have lent them money and grain. Let us now leave off this usury! ¹¹ Restore to them, I pray, as at this day, their fields, and their vineyards, and their olive yards, and their houses, and bring forth to them grain and wine and oil of the money. ¹² And they said, We will restore, and we will not exact of them; we will do thus as you say. Then I called the priests, and bound them by oath to do according to this word. ¹³ And I shook out my garment, and said, So may God shake out every man who shall not keep to this word, from his house, and from his labors, he shall be even thus shaken out, as an outcast and empty. And all the congregation said, Amen, and they praised the Lord; and the people did this thing.

²⁵ And I strove with them and cursed them; and I struck some of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters to their sons, and you shall not take of their daughters to your sons.

¹¹ Let pains destroy him round about, and let many enemies come about him,

⁶ For even when I remember, I am alarmed, and pains seize my flesh.

²⁷ Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? And He has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins. ²⁸ Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.

⁶ Therefore I have counted myself vile, and have fainted: and I esteem myself dust and ashes.

²² A glad heart promotes health, but the bones of a sorrowful man dry up.

¹⁴ A wise servant calms a man's anger, but who can endure a faint-hearted man?

⁹ Who will boast that he has a pure heart? Or who will boldly say that he is pure from sins?

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but the inside of you is full of greed and evil. ⁴⁰ Fools! Did not He who made the outside also make the inside?

⁷ I say to you that likewise there shall be more joy in heaven over one sinner repenting than over ninety-nine righteous who need no repentance.

¹⁰ Just so, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

¹⁷ But having come to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have an abundance of bread, and I am perishing with hunger! ¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, ¹⁹ and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants." ' ²⁰ And he arose and went to his father. But when he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and he ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. ²¹ And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.' ²² But the father said to his servants, 'Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. ²³ And bring the fatted calf here and slaughter it, and let us eat and be merry; ²⁴ for this my son was dead and came to life, and he was lost and was found.' And they began to be merry.

³² But it was necessary to be merry and to rejoice, because your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.' "

¹³ And the tax collector, standing far away, would not so much as lift his eyes towards heaven, but beat on his chest, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!'

⁴⁴ And being in agony, He prayed more fervently. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down onto the ground.

⁹ Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we respected them. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days were disciplining us, as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, in order to partake of His holiness. ¹¹ Now no discipline seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, later it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those having been trained by it.

¹⁵ looking diligently lest anyone fall from the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness growing up cause trouble, and through this many be defiled; ¹⁶ lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who in exchange for one meal gave up his birthright. ¹⁷ For you know that indeed afterward, wishing to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, having sought it out diligently with tears.

²³ to the general assembly and church of the firstborn having been enrolled in the heavens, to God the Judge of all, and to spirits of just men made perfect,

²⁸ Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us have grace, through which we serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

² Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various trials,

⁸ Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ⁹ Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter change into mourning and your joy into dejection. ¹⁰ Be humbled before the Lord, and He will exalt you.

¹⁷ Elijah was a man of similar nature to us, and with a prayer, he prayed earnestly for it not to rain, and it did not rain upon the land for three years and six months.

¹⁷ And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear;

²² Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere love for the brothers, love one another fervently from a pure heart,

² as newborn babes, desire the genuine milk of the word, that by it you may grow,

¹¹ Beloved, I implore you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from the lusts of the flesh which war against the soul;

⁸ Finally, all of you be like-minded, sympathetic, loving the brothers, compassionate, friendly,

¹⁰ But may the God of all grace, the One having called you into His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, may He Himself make you complete--He will establish, strengthen, and firmly ground you.

⁴ through which have been given to us precious and exceedingly great promises, so that through these we may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. ⁵ But also for this very reason, making every effort, provide with your faith virtue, and with virtue knowledge, ⁶ and with knowledge self-control, and with self-control perseverance, and with perseverance godliness, ⁷ and with godliness brotherly love, and with brotherly love, love. ⁸ For if these things belong to you and are increasing, it makes you neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁷ But if we are walking in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

⁹ If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

³ And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

¹⁷ But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother having need, and shuts off his compassion towards him, how does the love of God abide in him?

⁴ I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.

¹⁰ If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house, and do not greet him;

² Beloved, concerning all things I pray you to prosper and to be healthy, just as your soul prospers. ³ For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and witnessed to the truth which is in you, just as you walk in truth. ⁴ I have no greater joy than these things, that I hear that my children are walking in truth.

⁸ We therefore ought to receive such, in order that we may become fellow workers with the truth. ⁹ I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves the preeminence over them, does not receive us. ¹⁰ On account of this, if I come, I will call to mind his works which he does, slandering us with evil words. And not being content with that, he does not receive the brothers, and hinders those who desire to, casting them out of the church.

³ Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you about our common salvation, it became necessary to write to you exhorting you to earnestly contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

²³ but others save with fear, snatching them out of the fire, hating even the garment having been stained by the flesh.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. Be zealous therefore, and repent.
