²² And he said, You shall not kill them, unless you would kill those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow--set bread and water before them, and let them eat and drink, and depart to their master.

²² And I give to you Sicima, a select portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorites with my sword and bow.

¹¹ If then they should answer peaceably to you, and open to you, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be tributary and subject to you. ¹² But if they will not hearken to you, but wage war against you, you shall besiege it; ¹³ until the Lord your God shall deliver it into your hands, and you shall strike every male in it with the edge of the sword; ¹⁴ except the women and the stuff; and all the livestock, and whatsoever shall be in the city, and all the plunder you shall take as spoil for yourself, and shall eat all the plunder of your enemies whom the Lord your God gives you. ¹⁵ Thus shall you do to all the cities that are very far off from you, not being of the cities of these nations which the Lord your God gives you to inherit their land. ¹⁶ Of these you shall not take anything alive;

¹² And He sent forth the hornet before you; and He drove them out from before you, even twelve kings of the Amorites, not with your sword, nor with your bow.

⁸ And the children of Israel took captive of their brethren three hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters, and they plundered them of much property, and brought the spoils to Samaria. ⁹ And there was a prophet of the Lord there whose name was Oded. And he went out to meet the army that was coming to Samaria, and said to them, Behold, the wrath of the Lord God of your fathers is upon Judah, and He has delivered them into your hands, but you have killed them in wrath, and it has reached even to heaven. ¹⁰ And now you talk of keeping the children of Judah and Jerusalem for servants and handmaidens. Behold, am I not with you to testify for the Lord your God? ¹¹ And now listen to me, and restore the prisoners of your brethren whom you have taken: for the fierce anger of the Lord is upon you. ¹² And the chiefs of the sons of Ephraim rose up, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, against those that came from the war, ¹³ and said to them, You shall not bring the prisoners here to us, for whereas sin against the Lord is already upon us, and you mean to add to our sins, and to our trespass: for our sin is great, and the fierce anger of the Lord is upon Israel. ¹⁴ So the warriors left the prisoners and the spoils before the princes and all the congregation. ¹⁵ And the men who were called by name rose up, and took hold of the prisoners, and clothed all the naked from the spoils, and gave them garments and shoes, and gave them food to eat, and oil to anoint themselves with, and they let everyone that was weak to ride on donkeys, and placed them in Jericho, the city of palm trees, with their brethren; and they returned to Samaria.

⁶ For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword shall not save me.

²¹ If your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; ²² for so doing you shall heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward you with good.

⁷ But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them with bow, nor with sword, nor by war, nor by horses, nor by horsemen.

¹⁸ And I will make for them in that day a covenant with the wild beasts of the field, and with the birds of the sky, and with the reptiles of the earth: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle from off the earth, and will cause you to dwell safely.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

²⁰ Therefore "If your enemy should hunger, feed him; if he should thirst, give him drink; for by doing this you will heap coals of fire upon his head." ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
