⁵ For we have found this man to be a plague, and one causing discord among all the Jews throughout the world, and a leader of the Nazarenes sect,

⁷ And Saul said to his servants that stood by him, Hear now, you sons of Benjamin, will the son of Jesse indeed give all of you fields and vineyards, and will he make you all captains of hundreds and captains of thousands? ⁸ That you are conspiring against me, and there is no one that informs me, whereas my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or informs me, that my son has stirred up my servant against me for an enemy, as it is this day? ⁹ And Doeg the Syrian who was over the mules of Saul answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse as he came to Nob, to Abimelech son of Ahitub the priest.

¹⁷ And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to Elijah, Are you he that perverts Israel? ¹⁸ And Elijah said, I do not pervert Israel; but it is you and your father's house, in that you forsake the Lord your God, and you have gone after the Baals.

¹² Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up to us from you, have come to Jerusalem, the rebellious and wicked city which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it. ¹³ Now then let it be known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, you shall have no tribute, neither will they pay any tribute, and this injures kings. ¹⁴ And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonor of the king. Therefore have we sent and made known the matter to the king, ¹⁵ that examination may be made in your fathers' book of record. And you shall find, and you shall know that this city is rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for runaway slaves. Therefore this city has been made desolate. ¹⁶ We therefore declare to the king, that if this city is rebuilt, and its walls are set up, you shall have no peace. ¹⁷ Then the king sent to Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their fellow servants who dwelt in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, saying, Peace; and he said, ¹⁸ The tax collector whom you sent to us has been called before me. ¹⁹ And a decree has been made by me, and we have examined, and found that city of old time exalts itself against kings, and that rebellions and desertions take place within it.

⁵ Then Sanballat sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. ⁶ And in it was written, It has been reported among the Gentiles that you and the Jews are planning to revolt. Therefore you are building the wall, and you will be a king to them. ⁷ And moreover you have appointed prophets to yourself, that you might dwell in Jerusalem as a king over Judah; and now these words will be reported to the king. Now then, come, let us take counsel together. ⁸ And I sent to him, saying, It has not happened according to these words, even as you say, for you frame them falsely out of your own heart.

⁸ And he spoke to King Artaxerxes, saying, There is a nation scattered among the nations in all your kingdom, and their laws differ from those of all the other nations; and they disobey the laws of the king. Therefore it is not fitting for the king to let them alone.

⁴ And they said to the king, Let that man be slain, for he weakens the hands of the fighting men that are left in the city, and the hands of all the people, speaking to them according to these words; for this man does not prophesy peace to this people, but evil.

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos is forming conspiracies against you in the midst of the house of Israel: the land will be utterly unable to bear all his words.

²³ And when he arrived, he settled down in a city called Nazareth, so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, "He would be called a Nazarene."

¹¹ "Blessed are you whenever they revile you, and they persecute you, and they say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. ¹² Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

²⁵ It is enough for a disciple that he become like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call his household members!

² And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this Man perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."

⁵ But they insisted, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to here."

¹⁹ who because of a certain insurrection having occurred in the city had been thrown into prison, and for murder.

²⁵ And he released whom they were requesting, who because of insurrection and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

¹⁷ Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,

¹³ And they put forward false witnesses saying, "This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against the holy place and the law;

⁵ But some of those from the sect of the Pharisees rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses."

²⁰ And bringing them to the magistrates they said, "These men, being Jews, are agitating our city; ²¹ and they are proclaiming customs which are not lawful for us to receive or to do, since we are Romans."

⁶ But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out, "The men who have upset the whole world, these have come here, too; ⁷ whom Jason has received; and these all practice contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king--Jesus."

²⁸ crying out, "Men, Israelites, help! This is the man who is teaching all people everywhere against the people and the Law and this place; and furthermore he has brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place."

²² Now they were listening to him until this statement, and they lifted their voice saying, "Take away such a man from the earth, for it is not fitting for him to live!"

¹⁴ But I confess this to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing in all things which are written throughout the Law and in the Prophets,

⁵ since they have known me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

²² But we request to hear from you the things which you think; for concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against."

¹³ being defamed, we encourage; we have become as the sweepings of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

¹⁹ For there must also be sects among you, in order that those who are approved may become recognized among you.

¹² having your manner of life noble among the Gentiles, so that, whenever they speak against you as evildoers, when they observe the good works, they may glorify God in the day of visitation. ¹³ Therefore subject yourselves to every human institution on account of the Lord: whether to the king as to one having authority, ¹⁴ or to governors, as to those being sent for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those doing good. ¹⁵ For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may silence the ignorance of foolish men--

¹⁹ For this is admirable, if because of conscience toward God someone endures pain, suffering unjustly.
