³ Your eyes have seen all that the Lord our God did in Baal Peor; for every man that went after Baal of Peor, the Lord your God has utterly destroyed him from among you.

¹ And Israel sojourned in Shittim, and the people profaned themselves by committing harlotry with the daughters of Moab. ² And they called them to the sacrifices of their idols; and the people ate of their sacrifices, and worshipped their idols. ³ And Israel consecrated themselves to Baal of Peor; and the Lord was very angry with Israel. ⁴ And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the princes of the people, and make them examples of judgment for the Lord in the face of the sun, and the anger of the Lord shall be turned away from Israel. ⁵ And Moses said to the tribes of Israel, Every one of you kill his friend that is consecrated to Baal of Peor. ⁶ And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought his brother to a Midianite woman before Moses, and before all the congregation of the children of Israel; and they were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of witness. ⁷ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose out of the midst of the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand, ⁸ and went in after the Israelite man into the chamber, and pierced them both through, both the Israelite man, and the woman through her womb; and the plague was stopped from the children of Israel. ⁹ And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man numbered by Moses and Aaron, whom, even the children of Israel, they numbered in the Wilderness of Sinai.

¹⁶ For they were the occasion to the children of Israel by the word of Balaam of their revolting and despising the word of the Lord, because of Peor. And there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord.

¹⁷ Is the sin of Peor too little for you, whereas we have not been cleansed from it until this day, though there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord?

²⁸ They were joined also to Baal of Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked Him with their deeds; ²⁹ and destruction was multiplied among them.

¹⁰ I found Israel as grapes in the wilderness, and I saw their fathers as an early watchman in a fig tree. They went in to Baal Peor, and were shamefully estranged, and the abominable became as the beloved.
