And the brick was to them for stone, and their mortar was asphalt. ⁴ And they said, Come, let us build to ourselves a city and tower, whose top shall be to heaven, and let us make to ourselves a name, before we are scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth. ⁵ And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men had built. ⁶ And the Lord said, Behold, there is one race, and one language of all, and they have begun to do this, and now nothing shall fail from them of all that they have undertaken to do. ⁷ Come, let Us go down and confound their language, that they may not understand each the voice of his neighbor. ⁸ And the Lord scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city and the tower. ⁹ On this account its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and then the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth. ¹⁰ And these are the generations of Shem: and Shem was one hundred years old when he begot Arphaxad, the second year after the flood. ¹¹ And Shem lived five hundred years after he had begotten Arphaxad, and begot sons and daughters, and died. ¹² And Arphaxad lived one hundred and thirty-five years, and begot Cainan. ¹³ And Arphaxad lived four hundred years after he had begotten Cainan, and begot sons and daughters, and died. ¹⁸ In that day there shall be five cities in Egypt speaking the language of Canaan, and swearing by the name of the Lord of hosts; one city shall be called the City of Asedek.

⁹ For then will I turn to the peoples a tongue for her generation, that all may call on the name of the Lord, to serve Him under one yoke.

⁶ And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because they were hearing each one speaking in his own language.

¹⁰ And the beginning of his kingdom was Babylon, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

⁹ On this account its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and then the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.

¹¹ And Lot chose for himself all the country round the Jordan, and Lot went from the east, and they were separated each from his brother. And Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan.

¹ And it came to pass in the reign of Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar, that Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations,

¹¹ And it shall be in that day, that the Lord shall again show His hand, to be zealous for the remnant that is left of the people, which shall be left by the Assyrians, and that from Egypt, and from the country of Babylon, and from Ethiopia, and from the Elamites, and from the rising of the sun, and out of Arabia.

² And the Lord gave into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, and part of the vessels of the house of God: and he brought them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

¹¹ And he said to me, To build a house for it in the land of Babylon, and to prepare a place for it; and they shall set it there on its own base.

⁴ And they said, Come, let us build to ourselves a city and tower, whose top shall be to heaven, and let us make to ourselves a name, before we are scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth.

⁷ Come, let Us go down and confound their language, that they may not understand each the voice of his neighbor.

¹⁰ Now the Salt Valley consists of slime pits. And the king of Sodom fled and the king of Gomorrah, and they fell in there: and they that were left fled to the mountain country.

¹⁴ And they embittered their life by hard labors, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence.

³ And when they could no longer hide him, his mother took for him an ark, and besmeared it with bitumen, and cast the child into it, and put it in the reeds by the river.

⁷ You shall no longer give straw to the people for brickmaking as yesterday and the third day; but let them go themselves, and collect straw for themselves. ⁸ And you shall impose on them daily the rate of brickmaking which they perform: you shall not reduce anything, for they are idle. Therefore have they cried, saying, Let us arise and do sacrifice to our God. ⁹ Let the works of these men be made grievous, and let them care for these things, and not care for vain words. ¹⁰ And the taskmasters and the accountants hastened them, and they spoke to the people, saying, thus says Pharaoh: I will give you straw no longer. ¹¹ Go yourselves, get for yourselves straw wherever you can find it, for nothing is diminished from your rate. ¹² So the people were dispersed in all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble for straw. ¹³ And the taskmasters hastened them, saying, Fulfill your regular daily tasks, even as when straw was given to you. ¹⁴ And the accountants of the race of the children of Israel, who were set over them by the masters of Pharaoh, were scourged, and were asked, Why have you not fulfilled your rates of brickwork as yesterday and the third day, and today also? ¹⁵ And the accountants of the children of Israel went in and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why do you act thus to your servants? ¹⁶ Straw is not given to your servants, and they tell us to make bricks; and behold, your servants have been scourged; therefore you will injure your people. ¹⁷ And he said to them, You are idle, you are idlers. Therefore you say, Let us go and do sacrifice to our God. ¹⁸ Now then go and work, for straw shall not be given to you, yet you shall return the rate of bricks.

³¹ And he brought forth the people that were in it, and put them under the saw, and under iron harrows, and axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln: and thus he did to all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

⁵ They have set up for themselves an evil matter, they have given counsel to hide snares; they have said, Who shall see them?

¹¹ If they should exhort you, saying, Come with us, partake in blood, and let us unjustly hide the just man in the earth:

¹ I said in my heart, Come now, I will test you with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure. And behold, this is also vanity.

⁵ And now I will tell you what I will do to My vineyard; I will take away its hedge, and it shall be for a spoil; and I will pull down its walls, and it shall be left to be trodden down.

¹⁰ The bricks are fallen down, but come, let us hew stones, and cut down sycamores and cedars, and let us build for ourselves a tower.

⁶ everyone judging for his neighbor and that to assist his brother; and one will say, ⁷ The artificer has become strong, and the coppersmith that smites with the hammer, and forges also; sometimes he will say, It is a piece well joined; they have fastened them with nails; they will fix them, and they shall not be moved.

³ This is the people that provokes Me continually in My presence; they offer sacrifices in gardens, and burn incense on bricks to demons, which exist not.

¹⁴ Draw your water for a siege, and well secure your strongholds: enter into the clay, and thus be trodden in the chaff, make the fortifications stronger than brick.

¹³ but encourage yourselves every day, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

²⁴ And let us consider one another for the stirring up of love and of good works,

¹³ Come now, you who say, "Today and tomorrow let us travel to this city, and let us spend a year there, and let us trade and make a profit"--

¹ Listen now, you rich, weep and howl at your miseries which are coming upon you!

^{4 (6:5)} Now the giants were upon the earth in those days; and after that when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, they bore children to them, those were the giants of old, the men of renown.

⁸ And the Lord scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city and the tower. ⁹ On this account its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and then the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.

²⁸ Where do we go up? And your brethren drew away your heart, saying, It is a great nation and populous, and mightier than we; and there are cities great and walled up to heaven. Moreover we saw the sons of the giants there.

²⁷ And the Lord shall scatter you among all nations, and you shall be left few in number among all the nations, among which the Lord shall bring you.

¹ Hear, O Israel: You go this day across the Jordan to inherit nations greater and stronger than yourselves, cities great and walled up to heaven;

¹³ And David made himself a name. And when he returned he struck Edom in Gebelem to the number of eighteen thousand.

¹¹ And their tombs are their houses forever, even their tabernacles to all generations; they have called their lands after their own names. ¹² And man being in honor, understands not; he is compared to the senseless cattle, and is likened unto them. ¹³ This their way is an offense to them; yet afterwards men will commend their sayings. Pause.

⁹ For behold, Your enemies shall perish; and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

⁷ The memory of the just is praised, but the name of the ungodly man is extinguished.

¹¹ The tree grew large and strong, and its height reached to the sky, and its extent to the extremity of the whole earth;

²² is you, O king; for you have grown great and powerful, and your greatness has increased and reached to the heavens, and your dominion to the ends of the earth.

³⁰ the king answered and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for a royal residence, by the might of my power, for the honor of my glory?

⁵¹ He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory which is from the only God?

²¹ I will therefore go down and see, if they completely correspond with the cry which comes to Me, and if not, I will know.

⁸ And I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them out of that land, and to bring them into a good and wide land, into a land flowing with milk and honey, into the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and Girgashites and Hivites and Jebusites.

¹¹ And let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will descend upon Mount Sinai before all the people.

¹⁸ Now Mount Sinai was altogether in smoke, because God had descended upon it in fire; and the smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the people were exceedingly amazed.

²⁰ And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai on the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

⁴ The Lord is in His holy temple; as for the Lord, His throne is in heaven: His eyes look upon the poor, His eyelids test the sons of men.

¹³ The Lord looks out of heaven; He beholds all the sons of men. ¹⁴ He looks down from His dwelling place on all the inhabitants of the earth;

²³ I am a God close at hand, says the Lord, and not a God afar off. ²⁴ Shall anyone hide himself in secret places, and I not see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth? Says the Lord.

¹³ And no one has gone up into heaven except He who came down out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

¹³ And there is no creature hidden before Him, but all things are naked and open to His eyes, to whom we must give an account.

^{22 (3:23)} And God said, Behold, Adam has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest at any time he stretch forth his hand, and take of the tree of life and eat, and so he shall live forever —

^{5 (6:6)} And the Lord God, having seen that the wicked actions of men were multiplied upon the earth, and that everyone in his heart was intently brooding over evil continually,

²¹ And the Lord God smelled an aroma of sweetness, and the Lord God having considered, said, I will never again curse the earth, because of the works of men, because the imagination of man is intently bent upon evil things from his youth, I will never again smite all living flesh as I have done.

¹⁹ These three are the sons of Noah, of these were men scattered over all the earth.

¹ And all the earth had one language, and one speech.

¹⁴ Go, and cry to the gods whom you have chosen to yourselves, and let them save you in the time of your affliction.

²⁷ And it was noon, and Elijah the Tishbite mocked them, and said, Call with a loud voice, for he is a god; for he is meditating, or else perhaps he is engaged in business, or perhaps he is asleep, and needs to be awakened.

¹ Why did the heathen rage, and the nations imagine vain things? ² The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers gathered themselves together, against the Lord, and against His Christ; ³ saying, Let us break through Their bonds, and cast away Their yoke from us. ⁴ He that dwells in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn, and the Lord shall mock them.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart blameless, but not in the sight of your eyes: yet know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

²⁶ And He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell upon all the face of the earth, and He ordained their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,

²⁶ And God said, Let Us make man according to Our image and likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the flying creatures of heaven, and over the cattle and all the earth, and over all the reptiles that creep on the earth.

⁵ From these were the islands of the Gentiles divided in their land, each according to his tongue, in their tribes and in their nations.

²⁰ These were the sons of Ham in their tribes according to their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

³² These are the tribes of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, according to their nations: of them were the islands of the Gentiles scattered over the earth after the flood.

⁵ And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men had built.

²³ But they knew not that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them.

⁴⁹ The Lord shall bring upon you a nation from the extremity of the earth, like the swift flying of an eagle, a nation whose voice you shall not understand;

¹² frustrating the counsels of the crafty, and their hands shall not perform the truth: ¹³ who takes the wise in their wisdom, and subverts the counsel of the crafty.

²⁰ He changes the lips of the trusty, and He knows the understanding of the elders.

⁴ He that dwells in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn, and the Lord shall mock them.

¹⁰ The Lord frustrates the counsels of the nations; He brings to nought the reasonings of the people, and brings to nought the counsels of princes.

⁹ Destroy, O LORD, and divide their tongues, for I have seen iniquity and gainsaying in the city.

⁸ And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go to this people? And I said, behold, I am here, send me. And He said, Go, and say to this people,

¹⁵ Behold, I will bring upon you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, says the Lord; a nation the sound of whose language you shall not understand.

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ⁵ And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation of those under heaven. ⁶ And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because they were hearing each one speaking in his own language. ⁷ And they were all amazed and were marveling, saying to one another, "Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? ⁹ Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya toward Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ¹¹ Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the mighty deeds of God."

² For he who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. ³ But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort. ⁴ He who speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. ⁵ Now I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you should prophesy; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification. ⁶ But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either in a revelation, or in knowledge, or in a prophesy, or in doctrine? ⁷ Likewise the lifeless things, when they make a sound, whether flute or harp, unless they make a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is being played on the flute, or what is being played on the harp? ⁸ For if the trumpet gives an indistinct sound, who will prepare for battle? ⁹ So also you, if you do not give a clear word by the tongue, how will it be known what is being spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ There are, perhaps, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them without meaning. ¹¹ Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the sound, I shall be as a foreigner to the one speaking, and the one speaking shall be as a foreigner to me.

²³ If then the whole church comes together at the same place, and all speak in tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that you are mad?

²⁵ And to Eber were born two sons, the name of the one was Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided, and the name of his brother was Joktan.

⁷ Cursed be their wrath, for it was willful, and their anger, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

⁸ When the Most High divided the nations, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the nations according to the number of the angels of God.

³¹ These were the sons of Shem in their tribes, according to their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations. ³² These are the tribes of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, according to their nations: of them were the islands of the Gentiles scattered over the earth after the flood.

¹ The vision which Isaiah son of Amoz saw against Babylon. ² Lift up a standard on the mountain of the plain, exalt the voice to them, beckon with the hand, open the gates, you rulers. ³ I give command, and I bring them; giants are coming to fulfill My wrath, rejoicing at the same time and insulting. ⁴ A voice of many nations on the mountains, even like to that of many nations; a voice of kings and nations gathered together; the Lord of hosts has given command to a war-like nation, ⁵ to come from a land afar off, from the utmost foundation of heaven; the Lord and His warriors are coming to destroy all the world. ⁶ Howl, for the day of the Lord is near, and destruction from God shall arrive. ⁷ Therefore every hand shall become powerless, and every soul of man shall be dismayed. ⁸ The elders shall be troubled, and pangs shall seize them, as of a woman in labor; and they shall mourn one to another, and shall be amazed, and shall change their countenance as a flame. ⁹ For behold, the day of the Lord is coming which cannot be escaped, a day of wrath and anger, to make the world desolate, and to destroy sinners out of it. ¹⁰ For the stars of heaven, and Orion, and all the host of heaven, shall not give their light; and it shall be dark at sunrise, and the moon shall not give her light. ¹¹ And I will command evils for the whole world, and will visit their sins on the ungodly; and I will destroy the pride of transgressors, and will bring low the pride of the haughty. ¹² And they that are left shall be more precious than gold tried in the fire; and a man shall be more precious than the stone that is in Ophir. ¹³ For the heaven shall be enraged, and the earth shall be shaken from her foundation, because of the fierce anger of the Lord of hosts, in the day in which His wrath shall come on. ¹⁴ And they that are left shall be as a fleeing fawn, and as a stray sheep, and there shall be none to gather them; so that a man shall turn back to his people, and a man shall flee to his own land.

¹ The word of the Lord which He spoke against Babylon: ² Proclaim among the Gentiles, and cause the tidings to be heard, and suppress them not. Say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded; the fearless, the luxurious Merodach is delivered up. ³ For a nation has come up against her from the north, he shall utterly ravage her land, and there shall be none to dwell in it, neither man nor beast. ⁴ In those days, and at that time, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall proceed, weeping as they go, seeking the Lord their God. ⁵ They shall ask the way till they come to Zion, for that way shall they set their face; and they shall come and flee for refuge to the Lord their God; for the everlasting covenant shall not be forgotten. ⁶ My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds thrust them out, they caused them to wander on the mountains; they went from mountain to hill, they forgot their resting place. ⁷ All that found them consumed them. Their enemies said, Let us not leave them alone, because they have sinned against the Lord. He that gathered their fathers had a pasture of righteousness. ⁸ Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and from the land of the Chaldeans, and go forth, and be as serpents before sleep. ⁹ For behold, I stir up against Babylon the gatherings of nations out of the land of the north, and they shall set themselves in array against her. From there shall she be taken, as the dart of an expert warrior shall not return empty. ¹⁰ And Chaldea shall be a spoil. All that spoil her shall be satisfied. ¹¹ Because you rejoiced, and boasted, while plundering My heritage; because you exulted as calves in the grass, and pushed with the horn as bulls. ¹² Your mother is greatly ashamed; your mother that bore you for prosperity is confounded. She is the last of the nations, desolate, ¹³ by reason of the Lord's anger. It shall not be inhabited, but it all shall be a desolation; and everyone that passes through Babylon shall scowl, and they shall hiss at all her plagues. ¹⁴ Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all you that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare not your arrows, ¹⁵ and prevail against her. Her hands are weakened, her bulwarks are fallen, and her wall is broken down; for it is vengeance from God. Take vengeance upon her; as she has done, do to her. ¹⁶ Utterly destroy seed out of Babylon, and him that holds a sickle in time of harvest; for fear of the Grecian sword, they shall return everyone to his people, and everyone shall flee to his own land. ¹⁷ Israel is a wandering sheep; the lions have driven him out. The king of Assyria first devoured him, and afterward this king of Babylon has gnawed his bones. ¹⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will take vengeance on the king of Babylon, and upon his land, as I took vengeance on the king of Assyria. ¹⁹ And I will restore Israel to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and on Mount Ephraim and in Gilead, and his soul shall be satisfied. ²⁰ In those days, and at that time, they shall seek for the iniquity of Israel, and there shall be none; and for the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found; for I will be merciful to them that are left ²¹ on the land, says the Lord. Go up against it roughly, and against them that dwell on it. Avenge, O sword, and destroy utterly, says the Lord, and do according to all that I command you. ²² A sound of war, and great destruction in the land of the Chaldeans! ²³ How has the hammer of the whole earth been broken and crushed! How has Babylon become a desolation among the nations! ²⁴ They shall come upon you, and you shall not know it, O Babylon, that you will even be taken captive. You are found and taken, because you resisted the Lord. ²⁵ The Lord has opened His treasury, and brought forth the weapons of His anger; for the Lord God has a work in the land of the Chaldeans. ²⁶ For her times have come. Open her storehouses; search her as a cave, and utterly destroy her; let there be no remnant of her. ²⁷ Dry up all her fruits, and let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, and the time of their retribution. ²⁸ A voice of men fleeing and escaping from the land of Babylon, to declare to Zion the vengeance that comes from the Lord our God. ²⁹ Summon many against Babylon, everyone that bends the bow. Camp against her round about; let none of her people escape. Render to her according to her works, according to all that she has done, do to her; for she has resisted the Lord, the Holy God of Israel. ³⁰ Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her warriors shall be cast down, says the Lord. ³¹ Behold, I am against you, O haughty one, says the Lord; for your day has come, and the time of your retribution. ³² And your pride shall fail, and fall, and there shall be no one to set it up again. And I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all things round about her. ³³ Thus says the Lord: The children of Israel and the children of Judah have been oppressed. All those that have taken them captive have oppressed them together, for they would not let them go. ³⁴ But their Redeemer is strong; the Lord Almighty is His name. He will enter into judgment with His adversaries, that He may destroy the earth; ³⁵ and He will sharpen a sword against the Chaldeans, and against the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her nobles and upon her wise men. ³⁶ A sword upon her warriors, and they shall be weakened. A sword upon their horses, and upon their chariots. ³⁷ A sword upon their warriors and upon the mixed people in the midst of her; and they shall be as women. A sword upon the treasures, and they shall be scattered upon her water, ³⁸ and they shall be ashamed; for it is a land of graven images; and in the islands, where they boasted. ³⁹ Therefore shall idols dwell in the islands, and the young ostriches shall dwell in it. It shall not be inhabited anymore, forever. ⁴⁰ As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities bordering upon them, says the Lord: no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn there. ⁴¹ Behold, a people comes from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be stirred up from the end of the earth, holding bow and dagger. ⁴² The people are fierce, and will have no mercy; their voices shall sound as the sea, they shall ride upon horses, prepared for war, like fire, against you, O daughter of Babylon. ⁴³ The king of Babylon heard the sound of them, and his hands grew feeble. Anguish overcame him, pangs as of a woman in travail. ⁴⁴ Behold, he shall come up as a lion from Jordan to Gaethan; for I will speedily drive them from her, and I will set all the youths against her; for who is like Me? And who will resist Me? And who is this shepherd who will stand before Me? ⁴⁵ Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord, which He has taken against Babylon; and His devices, which He has devised upon the Chaldeans inhabiting it: surely lambs of their flock shall be destroyed. Surely pasture shall be cut off from them. ⁴⁶ Or at the sound of the taking of Babylon the earth shall quake, and a cry shall be heard among the nations.

²⁸ And God blessed them, saying, Increase and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the seas and flying creatures of heaven, and all the cattle and all the earth, and all the reptiles that creep on the earth.

⁷ But as for you, be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and have dominion over it.

³ Behold, the inheritance of the Lord, children, the reward of the fruit of the womb. ⁴ As arrows in the hand of a mighty man; so are the children of those who were outcasts.

³ Your wife shall be as a fruitful vine on the sides of your house; your children as young olive-plants round about your table. ⁴ Behold, thus shall the man be blessed that fears the Lord.

¹² whose children are as plants, strengthened in their youth: their daughters are beautiful, sumptuously adorned after the likeness of a temple.

² And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, even Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor; and they served other gods.

³⁴ the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

⁴ And Abram went as the Lord spoke to him, and Lot departed with him, and Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. ⁵ And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot the son of his brother, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and every soul which they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go into the land of Canaan.

²⁰ And it came to pass after these things, that it was reported to Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah herself too has born sons to Nahor your brother, ²¹ Huz the firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of the Syrians, and Chesed, ²² Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, Bethuel, and Bethuel begot Rebecca; ²³ these are eight sons which Milcah bore to Nahor, the brother of Abraham. ²⁴ And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.

⁴ And Jacob said to them, Brothers, where are you from? And they said, We are from Haran. ⁵ And he said to them, Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.

³¹ And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot his grandson, the son of Haran, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son, and led them forth out of the land of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan, and they came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.

⁴ And Abram went as the Lord spoke to him, and Lot departed with him, and Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

¹ And Abram went up out of Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the wilderness. ² And Abram was very rich in cattle, and silver, and gold. ³ And he went to the place where he came, into the wilderness as far as Bethel, as far as the place where his tent was before, between Bethel and Ai, ⁴ to the place of the altar, which he built there at first, and Abram there called on the name of the Lord. ⁵ And Lot, who went out with Abram, had sheep, oxen, and tents. ⁶ And the land was not large enough for them to live together, because their possessions were great; and the land was not large enough for them to live together. ⁷ And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle, and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle, and the Canaanites and the Perizzites then inhabited the land. ⁸ And Abram said to Lot, Let there not be strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. ⁹ Behold, is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me; if you go to the left, I will go to the right, and if you go to the right, I will go to the left. ¹⁰ And Lot, having lifted up his eyes, observed all the country round about the Jordan, that it was all watered, before God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, as the garden of the Lord, and as the land of Egypt, until you come to Zoar. ¹¹ And Lot chose for himself all the country round the Jordan, and Lot went from the east, and they were separated each from his brother. And Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan.

¹² And they also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother, and his baggage, and departed, for he dwelt in Sodom.

¹ And the two angels came to Sodom at evening. And Lot sat by the gate of Sodom. And Lot, having seen them, rose up to meet them, and he worshipped with his face to the ground, and said, ² Lo! My lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and rest from your journey, and wash your feet, and having risen early in the morning you shall depart on your journey. And they said, No, but we will lodge in the street. ³ And he constrained them, and they turned aside to him, and they entered into his house, and he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened cakes for them, and they did eat. ⁴ But before they went to sleep, the men of the city, the Sodomites, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people together. ⁵ And they called out Lot, and said to him, Where are the men that came to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may be with them. ⁶ And Lot went out to them to the porch, and he shut the door after him, ⁷ and said to them, By no means, brethren, do not act so wickedly. ⁸ But I have two daughters, who have not known a man. I will bring them out to you, and use them as it may please you, only do no injury to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shelter of my roof. ⁹ And they said to him, Stand back! You came here to sojourn, was it also to judge? Now then we would harm you more than them. And they pressed hard on the man, even Lot, and they drew near to break down the door. ¹⁰ And the men stretched forth their hands and drew Lot in to them into the house, and shut the door of the house. ¹¹ And they struck the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, and they were wearied with seeking the door. ¹² And the men said to Lot, Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, or sons or daughters, or if you have any other friend in the city, bring them out of this place. ¹³ For we are going to destroy this place; for their cry has been raised up before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it. ¹⁴ And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law who had married his daughters, and said, Rise up, and depart out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city; but he seemed to be speaking absurdly before his sons-in-law. ¹⁵ But when it was morning, the angels urged Lot, saying, Arise and take your wife, and your two daughters whom you have, and go forth; lest you also be destroyed with the iniquities of the city. ¹⁶ And they were troubled, and the angels laid hold on his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, in that the Lord spared him. ¹⁷ And it came to pass when they brought them out, that they said, Save your own life by all means; look not round to that which is behind, nor stay in all the country round about, escape to the mountain, lest perhaps you be overtaken together with them. ¹⁸ And Lot said to them, I pray, my lords, ¹⁹ since your servant has found mercy before you, and you have magnified your righteousness, in what you do towards me that my soul may live, — but I shall not be able to escape to the mountain, lest perhaps the calamity overtake me and I die. ²⁰ Behold, this city is near for me to escape to, which is a small one, and there shall I be preserved, is it not little? And my soul shall live because of you. ²¹ And he said to him, Behold, I have had respect to you also about this thing, that I should not overthrow the city about which you have spoken. ²² Hurry, therefore, to escape there, for I shall not be able to do anything until you arrive there; therefore he called the name of that city, Zoar. ²³ The sun was risen upon the earth, when Lot entered into Zoar. ²⁴ And the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven. ²⁵ And He overthrew these cities, and all the country round about, and all that dwelt in the cities, and the plants springing out of the ground. ²⁶ And his wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. ²⁷ And Abraham rose up early to go to the place where he had stood before the Lord. ²⁸ And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and towards the surrounding country, and saw, and behold, a flame went up from the earth, as the smoke of a furnace. ²⁹ And it came to pass, that when God destroyed all the cities of the region round about, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when the Lord overthrew those cities in which Lot dwelt.

⁷ and He rescued righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the indecent conduct of lawless men

⁷ And He said to him, I am God that brought you out of the land of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land to inherit.

⁷ You are the Lord God, You chose Abram, and brought him out of the land of the Chaldeans, and gave him the name of Abraham.

² And he said, "Men, brothers and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, ³ and said to him, 'Go out from your land and from your relatives, and come to a land which I will show you.' ⁴ Then he went forth from the land of the Chaldeans and settled down in Haran. And from there, after his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.

¹⁵ And God said to Abraham, Sarai, your wife — her name shall not be called Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.

¹² For truly she is my sister by my father, but not by my mother, and she became my wife.

²⁰ And it came to pass after these things, that it was reported to Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah herself too has born sons to Nahor your brother,

¹⁵ And it came to pass before he had done speaking in his mind, that behold, Rebecca the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came forth, having a water pot on her shoulders.

² And Abram said, Master and Lord, what shall You give me? Seeing I am departing without a child, but the son of Masek my home-born female slave, this Eliezer of Damascus is my heir. ³ And Abram said, I am grieved since You have given me no seed, but my home-born servant shall succeed me.

¹ Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children; and she had an Egyptian maid, whose name was Hagar. ² And Sarai said to Abram, Behold, the Lord has restrained me from bearing, go therefore in to my maid, that I may get children for myself through her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

¹¹ And Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in days, and the custom of women ceased with Sarah. ¹² And Sarah laughed in herself, saying, The thing has not as yet happened to me, even until now, and my lord is old.

¹ And the Lord visited Sarah, as He said, and the Lord did to Sarah, as He spoke. ² And she conceived and bore to Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time according as the Lord spoke to him.

²¹ Now Isaac prayed to the Lord concerning Rebecca his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord heard him, and his wife Rebecca conceived in her womb.

³¹ And when the Lord God saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

¹ And Rachel, having perceived that she bore Jacob no children, was jealous of her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children; and if not, I shall die. ² And Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said to her, Am I in the place of God, who has deprived you of the fruit of the womb?

² And there was a man of Zorah, of the family of the kindred of Dan, and his name was Manoah, and his wife was barren, and bore no children.

² And he had two wives; the name of the one was Anna, and the name of the second was Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Anna had no child.

⁹ who settles the barren woman in a house, as a mother rejoicing over children.

⁷ But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

³⁶ And behold, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for she who was called barren.

¹⁹ And the boundaries of the Canaanites were from Sidon till one comes to Gerar and Gaza, till one comes to Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. ²⁷ And these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot. ²⁸ And Haran died in the presence of Terah his father, in the land in which he was born, in the country of the Chaldees.

³² And all the days of Terah in the land of Haran were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.

¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels of his master's camels, and he took of all the goods of his master with him, and he arose and went into Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor.

⁴³ Now then, my son, hear my voice, and rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia to Laban my brother, into Haran.

² And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, even Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor; and they served other gods. ³ And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the river, and I guided him through all the land, and I multiplied his seed;

⁸ By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go forth to the place which he was about to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
