¹ I perish, carried away by the wind, and I seek for burial, and obtain it not. ² Weary I intreat; and what have I done? And strangers have stolen my goods. ³ Who is this? Let him join hands with me. ⁴ For You have hid their heart from wisdom, therefore You shall not exalt them. ⁵ He shall promise mischief to his companions: but their eyes have failed for their children. ⁶ But You have made me a byword among the nations, and I have become a scorn to them. ⁷ For my eyes are dimmed through pain, I have been grievously beset by all. ⁸ Wonder has seized true men upon this, and let the just rise up against the transgressor. ⁹ But let the faithful hold on his own way, and let him that is pure of hands take courage. ¹⁰ How do you all strengthen yourselves and come now, for I do not find truth in you. ¹¹ My days have passed in groaning, and my heart strings are broken. ¹² I have turned the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. ¹³ For if I remain, Hades is my habitation: and my bed has been made in darkness. ¹⁴ I have called upon death to be my father, and corruption to be my mother and sister. ¹⁵ Where then is yet my hope? Or where shall I see my good? ¹⁶ Will they go down with me to Hades, or shall we go down together to the tomb?

¹¹ For what is my strength, that I continue? What is my time, that my soul endures?

¹³ For if I remain, Hades is my habitation: and my bed has been made in darkness. ¹⁴ I have called upon death to be my father, and corruption to be my mother and sister.

¹⁷ And I besought my wife, and earnestly begged the sons of my concubines.

¹⁶ And Job lived after his affliction one hundred and seventy years: and all the years he lived were two hundred and forty: and Job saw his sons and his sons' sons, to the fourth generation.

³ For my soul is filled with troubles, and my life has drawn near to Hades. ⁴ I have been reckoned with them that go down to the pit; I became as a man without help; ⁵ free among the dead, as the slain ones cast out, who sleep in the tomb; whom You remember no more; and they are rejected from Your hand.

¹⁰ I said in the end of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave; I shall part with the remainder of my years. ¹¹ I said, I shall no more see the salvation of God in the land of the living; I shall no more see the salvation of Israel on the earth; I shall no more see man. ¹² My life has failed from among my kindred; I have parted with the remainder of my life; it has gone forth and departed from me, as one that has pitched a tent takes it down again; my breath was with me as a weaver's web, when she that weaves draws near to cut off the thread. ¹³ In that day I was given up as to a lion until the morning; so has He broken all my bones; for I was so given up from day even to night. ¹⁴ As a swallow, so will I cry, and as a dove, so do I mourn; for my eyes have failed from looking to the height of heaven to the Lord, who has delivered me,

¹⁶ I will not take vengeance on you forever, neither will I be always angry with you; for My Spirit shall go forth from Me, and I have created all breath.

⁶ For the Lord gave her no child in her affliction, and according to the despondency of her affliction; and she was dispirited on this account, that the Lord had shut up her womb so as not to give her a child. ⁷ So she did year by year, in going up to the house of the Lord; and she was dispirited, and wept, and did not eat.

⁴ For a righteous and blameless man has become a subject for mockery.

⁹ For it were well if He would thoroughly search you: for though doing all things in your power you should attach yourselves to Him,

^{20 (16:21)} Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let my eye weep before Him.

³ Raise me, and I will speak; then you shall not laugh me to scorn.

¹³ His soul shall dwell in prosperity; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

¹⁴ I behaved agreeably towards them as if it had been our neighbor or brother; I humbled myself as one mourning and sad of countenance. ¹⁵ Yet they rejoiced against me, and plagues were plentifully brought against me, and I knew it not; they were scattered, but repented not. ¹⁶ They tempted me, they sneered at me most contemptuously, they gnashed their teeth upon me.

¹ Praise of a Song, by David. He that dwells in the help of the Highest, shall sojourn under the shelter of the God of heaven.

³⁹ And those passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." ⁴¹ Likewise the chief priests also, mocking Him with the scribes and elders, and Pharisees, said, ⁴² He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on Him. ⁴³ He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He'll have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' " ⁴⁴ Even the thieves who were crucified with Him were reviling Him with the same insult.

⁹ And I myself will be a surety for him; at my hand you shall require him; if I bring him not to you, and place him before you, I shall be guilty toward you forever.

³² For your servant has received the boy in charge from his father, saying, If I don't bring him to you, and place him before you, I shall be guilty towards my father forever.

³³ Would that He our mediator were present, and a reprover, and one who should hear the cause between both.

¹²² Receive Your servant for good; let not the proud accuse me falsely.

¹¹ Then poverty comes upon you as an evil traveler, and your need as a swift courier. ^(6:11A) But if you be diligent, your harvest shall arrive as a fountain, and poverty shall flee away as a bad courier.

¹⁵ A bad man does harm wherever he meets a just man, and he hates the sound of safety.

¹⁸ A foolish man applauds and rejoices over himself, as he also that becomes surety would make himself responsible for his own friends.

²⁶ Become not surety from respect of a man's person.

¹⁴ As a swallow, so will I cry, and as a dove, so do I mourn; for my eyes have failed from looking to the height of heaven to the Lord, who has delivered me,

²² by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

³¹ And it was reported to David, saying, Ahithophel also is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord my God, disconcert, I pray, the counsel of Ahithophel.

¹⁴ And Absalom, and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the Lord has purposed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, that the Lord might bring all evil upon Absalom.

¹⁶ And it came to pass when the prophet was speaking to him, that he said to him, Have I made you the king's counselor? Take heed lest you be scourged! And the prophet became silent, and said, I know that God is disposed against you to destroy you, because you have done this thing, and have not hearkened to my counsel.

¹⁴ For the Lord has prepared for them a spirit of error, and they have caused Egypt to err in all their works, as one staggers who is drunken and vomits also.

²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes.

¹¹ He answered and said to them, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

⁸ Just as it is written: "God has given them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, to this very day."

²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

⁵ You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, recompensing the sins of the fathers upon the children, to the third and fourth generation to them that hate Me,

⁶⁵ Moreover among those nations He will not give you quiet, neither by any means shall the sole of your foot have rest; and the Lord shall give you there another and a misgiving heart, and failing eyes, and a wasting soul.

¹² Only in your days I will not do it for the sake of David your father; but I will take it out of the hand of your son.

²⁰ But safety shall fail them, for their hope is destruction, and the eyes of the ungodly shall waste away.

²¹ For truly I will not be awed because of man, nor indeed will I be confounded before a mortal. ²² For I know not how to respect persons: and if otherwise, even the moths would eat me.

² Everyone has spoken vanity to his neighbor: their lips are deceitful, they have spoken with a double heart. ³ Let the Lord destroy all the deceitful lips, and the tongue that speaks great words;

⁵ He that prepares a net in the way of his own friend, entangles his own feet in it.

¹⁷ ( { τ}) PHE. While we yet lived our eyes failed, while we looked in vain for our help. ( { φ}) TSADE. We looked to a nation that could not save.

⁵ For neither were we using flattering speech, as you know, nor covering up greed, God is our witness.

²⁷ If you had told me, I would have sent you away with joy, and with songs, with timbrel and harp.

⁷ then I will cut off Israel from the land which I have given them, and this house which I have consecrated to My name I will cast out of My sight; and Israel shall be a desolation and a by-word to all nations.

⁹ But now I am their music, and they have me for a byword.

¹⁴ You have made us a proverb among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the nations.

¹² For they drink wine with harp, and psaltery, and drums, and pipes; but they regard not the works of the Lord, and consider not the works of His hands.

^{8 (16:9)} My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face.

^{16 (16:17)} My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids.

⁷ My eye is troubled because of my wrath; I am worn out because of all my enemies.

⁹ Pity me, O Lord, for I am afflicted; my eye is troubled with indignation, my soul and my belly. ¹⁰ For my life is spent with grief, and my years with groanings; my strength has been weakened through poverty, and my bones are troubled.

²³ I am removed as a shadow in its going down; I am tossed up and down like locusts.

¹² For who knows what is good for a man in his life, during the number of the life of the days of his vanity? And he has spent them as a shadow; for who shall tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

¹⁷ For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: for this our eyes are darkened.

¹⁹ The righteous have seen it, and laughed, and the blameless one has derided them.

³⁰ causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.

¹² Behold, these are the sinners, and they that prosper always; they have possessed wealth. ¹³ And I said, Verily in vain have I justified my heart, and washed my hands in innocence. ¹⁴ For I was plagued all the day, and my reproof was every morning. ¹⁵ If I said, I will speak thus; behold, I should have broken covenant with the generation of Your children.

⁸ If you should see the oppression of the poor, and the wresting of judgment and of justice in the land, wonder not at the matter; for there is a high one to watch over him that is high, and high ones over them.

¹³ His eye is too pure to behold evil doings, and to look upon grievous afflictions: why do You look upon despisers? Will You be silent when the ungodly swallows up the just?

⁴⁶ But Paul and Barnabas, speaking boldly said, "It was necessary for the word of God to be spoken to you first; but since you thrust it away, and judge yourselves not worthy of eternal life; behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and untraceable are His ways!

⁵ Did he not say to me, She is my sister, and she, even she herself said, He is my brother? With a pure heart and in the righteousness of my hands have I done this.

³⁰ He shall deliver the innocent, and do you save yourself by your pure hands.

⁴ He that is innocent in his hands and pure in his heart; who has not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence, and compass Your altar, O Lord;

¹³ And I said, Verily in vain have I justified my heart, and washed my hands in innocence.

⁷ They shall go from strength to strength; the God of gods shall be seen in Zion.

¹¹ For the Lord loves mercy and truth; God will give grace and glory; the Lord will not withhold good things from them that walk in innocence.

¹⁸ But the ways of the righteous shine like light; they go forth and shine, until the day has fully come.

¹⁶ A wise man fears, and departs from evil, but the fool trusts in himself, and joins himself with the transgressor.

¹⁵ When you stretch forth your hands, I will turn away My eyes from you; and though you make many supplications, I will not hearken to you; for your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash, and be clean; remove your iniquities from your souls before My eyes; cease from your iniquities;

⁸ There shall be there a pure way, and it shall be called a holy way; and there shall not pass by there any unclean person, neither shall there be there an unclean way; but the dispersed shall walk on it, and they shall not go astray. ⁹ And there shall be no lion there, neither shall any evil beast go up upon it, nor at all be found there; but the redeemed and gathered on the Lord's behalf shall walk in it, ¹⁰ and shall return, and come to Zion with joy, and everlasting joy shall be over their head; for on their head shall be praise and exaltation, and joy shall take possession of them; sorrow and pain, and groaning have fled away.

²⁹ He gives strength to the hungry, and sorrow to them that are not suffering. ³⁰ For the young men shall hunger, and the youths shall be weary, and the choice men shall be powerless; ³¹ but they that wait on God shall renew their strength; they shall put forth new feathers like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

² Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with ceremonially unclean, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.

⁹ And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ¹⁰ Therefore I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in calamities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

⁵ who by the power of God are being guarded through faith for the salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out in order that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

²⁹ Sit down now, and let there not be unrighteousness, and unite again with the just.

² So then you alone are men, and wisdom shall die with you?

⁹ For what you know, do we know not? Or what you understand, do we not also?

⁴ For You have hid their heart from wisdom, therefore You shall not exalt them.

⁹ The long-lived are not wise as such, neither do the aged know judgment.

⁷ And it came to pass after the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, You have sinned, and your two friends, for you have not said anything true before Me, as My servant Job has.

¹⁸ Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, and between him that serves God, and him that serves Him not.

⁵ I say this to your shame. So is there not among you a wise man, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brother and another?

⁶ And my life is lighter than a word, and has perished in vain hope.

²⁵ But my life is swifter than a post: my days have fled away, and they knew it not. ²⁶ Or again, is there a trace of their path left by ships? Or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks its prey?

^{9 (16:5C)} All of the works of the Lord are done with righteousness, and the ungodly man is kept for the evil day.

²¹ There are many thoughts in a man's heart, but the counsel of the Lord abides forever.

¹⁰ Whatsoever your hand shall find to do, do with all your might; for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in Hades, where you are going.

¹⁰ And whatever counsel you shall take, the Lord shall bring it to nought; and whatever word you shall speak, it shall not stand among you; for God is with us.

¹⁰ I said in the end of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave; I shall part with the remainder of my years.

³⁷ Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? The Lord has not commanded it.

¹³ Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, that often I planned to come to you (and I was hindered until now), that I might have some fruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles.

¹⁵ And in this confidence I intended to come to you earlier, that you might have a second benefit, ¹⁶ and through you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and by you to be sent on to Judea. ¹⁷ Therefore, when I decided this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I decide, do I decide according to the flesh, that there may be with me "Yes, Yes," and "No, No?"

¹³ Come now, you who say, "Today and tomorrow let us travel to this city, and let us spend a year there, and let us trade and make a profit"-- ¹⁴ you who do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? For it will be a vapor that appears for a little time, but then also disappears. ¹⁵ Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."

⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, If only it were evening! And in the evening you shall say, If only it were morning! For the fear of your heart with which you shall fear, and for the sights of your eyes which you shall see.

³ So have I also endured months of vanity, and nights of pain have been appointed me. ⁴ Whenever I lie down, I say, When will it be day? And whenever I rise up, again I say when will it be evening? And I am full of pains from evening to morning.

¹³ I said that my bed should comfort me, and I would privately counsel with myself on my couch. ¹⁴ You scare me with dreams, and terrify me with visions.

¹⁴ But having known their works, He delivered them into darkness; and in the night one will be as a thief. ¹⁵ And the eye of the adulterer has watched for the darkness, saying, Eye shall not see me, and he puts a covering on his face. ¹⁶ In darkness he digs through houses; by day they conceal themselves securely; they know not the light.

¹³ Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest,

²¹ before I go to where I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess; ²² to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither can anyone see the life of mortals.

¹⁴ For if a man should die, shall he live again, having accomplished the days of his life? I will wait till I exist again.

²³ For I know that death will destroy me: for the earth is the house appointed for every mortal.

¹⁴ Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and let your heart be strengthened; yea, wait on the Lord!

⁸ If I should go up to heaven, You are there: if I should go down to hell, You are present.

² His burial shall be in peace; he has been removed out of the way.

²⁵ ( { θ}) TETH. The Lord is good to them that wait for Him; the soul which shall seek Him ²⁶ is good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation from the Lord.

²⁸ I am as that which grows old like a bottle, or like a moth-eaten garment.

²⁶ and to raise up upon the earth my skin that endures these sufferings: for these things have been accomplished to me of the Lord;

²⁶ But they lie down in the dust together, and corruption covers them.

³² And he has been led away to the tombs, and he has watched over the heaps. ³³ The stones of the valley have been sweet to him, and every man shall depart after him, and there are innumerable ones before him.

²⁰ Then is his sin brought to remembrance, and he vanishes like a vapor of dew; but let what he has done be recompensed to him, and let every unrighteous one be crushed like rotten wood.

³⁰ And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat.

¹⁰ because You will not leave my soul in Hades, neither will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

⁹ and live to the end, so that he should not see corruption.

¹¹ Your glory has come down to Hades, and your great mirth; under you they shall spread corruption, and the worm shall be your covering.

²⁷ Because You will not abandon my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. ²⁸ You have made known to me the ways of life; You will fill me full of joy in Your presence." ²⁹ "Men, brothers, let me speak with boldness to you about the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. ³⁰ "Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to seat Him on his throne, ³¹ foreseeing this, he spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, "that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption."

³⁴ "And that He raised Him from the dead, no longer being about to return to corruption, thus He has said: 'I will give you the sure decrees of God concerning David.' ³⁵ "Therefore also in another Psalm He says, 'You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.' ³⁶ "For David indeed in his own generation, having served by the purpose of God, died, and was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; ³⁷ but He whom God raised up did not see corruption.

⁴² So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption.

⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. ⁵⁴ So when this corruptible should put on incorruption, and this mortal should put on immortality, then will come to pass the word which was written: "Death was swallowed up in victory."

⁶ Is not your fear founded in folly, your hope also, and the mischief of your way?

¹⁵ Though the Mighty One should lay His hand upon me, forasmuch as He has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before Him.

¹⁰ He has torn me round about, and I am gone, and He has cut off my hope like a tree.

¹⁷ There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest. ¹⁸ And the men of old time have together ceased to hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and great are there, and the servant that feared his lord.

¹³ Let the soles of his feet be devoured, and death shall consume his beauty. ¹⁴ And let health be utterly banished from his tabernacle, and let distress seize upon him with a charge from the king.

¹⁸ He spares also his soul from death, and does not allow him to fall in war. ¹⁹ And again, He chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones are pained. ²⁰ And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat; ²¹ until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall show his bones bare. ²² His soul also draws near to death, and his life is in Hades. ²³ Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and show his folly; ²⁴ He will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as fresh plaster upon a wall; and He will fill his bones with marrow. ²⁵ And He will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and He will restore him among men in his full strength. ²⁶ And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted by Him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression of praise: for He will render to men their due. ²⁷ Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? And He has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins. ²⁸ Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.

⁴ I have been reckoned with them that go down to the pit; I became as a man without help; ⁵ free among the dead, as the slain ones cast out, who sleep in the tomb; whom You remember no more; and they are rejected from Your hand. ⁶ They laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, and in the shadow of death. ⁷ Your wrath has pressed heavily upon me, and You have brought upon me all Your billows. Pause. ⁸ You have removed my acquaintance far from me; they have made me an abomination to themselves; I have been delivered up, and have not gone forth.

⁷ Hear me speedily, O Lord; my spirit has failed; do not hide Your face from me, lest I be like them that go down to the pit.

¹⁷ For You have chosen my soul, that it should not perish; and You have cast all my sins behind me. ¹⁸ For they that are in the grave shall not praise You, neither shall the dead bless You, neither shall they that are in Hades hope for Your mercy.

¹¹ And the Lord spoke to me, saying, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: and they say, Our bones have become dry, our hope has perished, we are quite spent.

^{6 (2:7)} to the clefts of the mountains; I went down into the earth, whose bars are the everlasting barriers: yet, O Lord my God, let my ruined life be restored.
