Then the devil said before the Lord, I have come from going throughout the world, and walking about the whole earth. ³ And the Lord said to the devil, Have you then observed My servant Job, that there is none like him upon the earth, a harmless, true, blameless, and godly man; abstaining from all evil? And yet he cleaves to innocence, although you have incited Me to destroy his substance without cause? ⁴ And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give as a ransom for his life. ⁵ Ah, but put forth Your hand, and touch his bones and his flesh — surely he will curse You to Your face! ⁶ And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to you; only save his life. ⁷ So the devil went out from the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from his feet to his head. ⁸ And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung heap outside the city. ⁹ And when much time had passed, his wife said to him, How long will you hold out, saying, ^(9A) Behold, I wait yet a little while, expecting the hope of my deliverance? ^(9B) For behold, your memorial is abolished from the earth, even your sons and daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb which I bore in vain with sorrows; ^(9C) and you yourself sit down to spend the nights in the open air among the corruption of worms, ^(9D) and I am a wanderer and a servant from place to place and house to house, waiting for the setting of the sun, that I may rest from my labors, and my pangs which now beset me: ^(9E) but curse the Lord, and die. ¹⁰ But he looked at her, and said to her, You have spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not with his lips before God. ¹¹ Now his three friends, having heard of all the evil that had come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Temans, Bildad sovereign of the Shuhites, and Zophar, king of the Minaeans. And they came to him with one accord, to comfort him, and to visit him. ¹² And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and everyone tore his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads, ¹³ and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and not one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful, and very great.

⁶ And it came to pass one day, that behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came with them.

¹ And it came to pass in the year in which King Uzziah died, that I saw the Lord sitting on a high and exalted throne, and the house was full of His glory. ² And seraphim stood round about Him; each one had six wings; and with two they covered their face, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.

¹⁹ And the angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I was sent to speak to you and to proclaim the good news to you of these things.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits being sent out to minister for the sake of those who are about to inherit salvation?

⁸ And the Angel of the Lord said to her, Hagar, Sarai's maid, from where do you come, and where are you going? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.

⁷ And the Lord said to the devil, From where have you come? And the devil answered the Lord and said, I have come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world.

³⁰ I will no longer speak many things with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.

⁴ among whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that the illumination of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine on them.

⁸ Be sober, be watchful; your adversary the devil walks about as a roaring lion, seeking someone he may devour.

^{9 (6:10)} And these are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man; being perfect in his generation; Noah was well pleasing to God.

²⁰ And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should ruin or destroy.

¹ There was a certain man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, abstaining from everything evil.

⁸ And the Lord said to him, Have you diligently considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on all the earth, a blameless man, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil?

¹¹ But put forth Your hand, and touch all that he has, and he will curse You to Your face.

²¹ and said, I myself came forth naked from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord has given, and the Lord has taken away. As it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; blessed be the name of the Lord. ²² In all these events that befell him, Job sinned not before the Lord, and did not impute wrong to God.

¹⁷ Let Him not crush me with a dark storm: but He has made my bruises many without cause.

²⁰ For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane, and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse.

¹⁵ Though the Mighty One should lay His hand upon me, forasmuch as He has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before Him.

⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you till I die! For I will not let go my innocence, ⁶ but keeping fast to my righteousness, I will by no means let it go: for I am not conscious to myself of having done anything amiss.

¹ A Psalm of David. Judge me, O Lord; for I have walked in my innocence; and hoping in the Lord I shall not be moved.

³⁷ Maintain innocence, and behold uprightness; for there is a remnant to the peaceable man.

¹² But You helped me because of my innocence, and have established me before You forever.

⁸ A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place.

² He that walks uprightly fears the Lord, but he that is perverse in his ways shall be dishonored.

⁸ The sacrifices of the ungodly are an abomination to the Lord, but the prayers of them that walk honestly are acceptable to Him.

¹⁷ The paths of life turn aside from evil, and the ways of righteousness are length of life. He that receives instruction shall be in prosperity, and he that regards reproofs shall be made wise. He that keeps his ways preserves his own soul, and he that loves his life will spare his mouth.

³ Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but so that the works of God should be manifest in him.

¹² Not that I have already obtained, or have already been made perfect; but I press on, if also I may lay hold of that for which I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.

¹² Blessed is the man who endures temptation; because when he is approved, he shall receive the crown of life which the Lord promised to those who love Him.

⁷ so that the genuineness of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, though being tested with fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

¹⁰ But may the God of all grace, the One having called you into His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, may He Himself make you complete--He will establish, strengthen, and firmly ground you.

³ And she answered and said, If I have found favor in the sight of the king, let my life be granted to my petition, and my people to my request. ⁴ For both I and my people have been sold for destruction, and pillage, and slavery; both we and our children as bondmen and bondwomen. And I consented not to it, for the slanderer is not worthy of the king's palace.

²⁰ For in that day a man shall cast forth his silver and gold abominations, which they made, in order to worship vanities and bats; ²¹ to enter into the caverns of the solid rock, and into the clefts of the rocks, for fear of the Lord, and by reason of the glory of His might, when He shall arise to strike mightily the earth.

⁸ But ten men were found there, and they said to Ishmael, Do not kill us, for we have treasures in the field, wheat and barley, honey and oil. So he passed by, and did not kill them in the midst of their brothers.

²⁵ "Because of this I say to you, do not worry about your life--what you shall eat, or what you shall drink--nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

²⁶ For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give as an exchange for his soul?

¹⁸ And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship. ¹⁹ And on the third day we threw off the equipment of the ship with our own hands.

⁸ More than that I also consider all things to be loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have sustained the loss of all things, and I consider them to be rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ ⁹ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; ¹⁰ so as to know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

¹⁵ And speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them, Whosoever shall curse God shall bear his sin.

¹⁷ And David said to God, Was it not I that gave orders to number the people? And I am the guilty one; I have greatly sinned; but these sheep, what have they done? O Lord God, let Your hand be upon me, and upon my father's house, and not on Your people for destruction, O Lord!

⁵ And when the days of the banquet were completed, Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning, and offered sacrifices for them, according to their number, and one calf for a sin offering for their souls; for Job said, Lest perhaps my sons have thought evil, and cursed God in their minds. Thus, then Job did continually.

⁹ And when much time had passed, his wife said to him, How long will you hold out, saying, ^(9A) Behold, I wait yet a little while, expecting the hope of my deliverance? ^(9B) For behold, your memorial is abolished from the earth, even your sons and daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb which I bore in vain with sorrows; ^(9C) and you yourself sit down to spend the nights in the open air among the corruption of worms, ^(9D) and I am a wanderer and a servant from place to place and house to house, waiting for the setting of the sun, that I may rest from my labors, and my pangs which now beset me: ^(9E) but curse the Lord, and die.

²⁰ My flesh is corrupt under my skin, and my bones are held in my teeth. ²¹ Pity me, pity me, O my friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me.

³ Because I kept silence, my bones waxed old, from my crying all the day. ⁴ For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; I became thoroughly miserable while a thorn was fastened in me. Pause.

² For Your weapons are fixed in me, and You have pressed Your hand heavily upon me. ³ For there is no health in my flesh because of Your anger; there is no peace to my bones because of my sins. ⁴ For my transgressions have gone over my head; they have pressed heavily upon me like a weighty burden. ⁵ My wounds have become foul and corrupt, because of my foolishness. ⁶ I have been wretched and bowed down continually; I went with a mourning countenance all the day. ⁷ For my soul is filled with mockings; and there is no health in my flesh.

¹⁰ Remove Your scourge from me; I have fainted by reason of the strength of Your hand.

²¹ And famine shall come sorely upon you, and it shall come to pass, that when you shall be hungry, you shall be grieved, and you shall speak evil of the prince and of your fathers' ordinances; and they shall look up to heaven above,

¹² Then the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I give all that he has into your hand, but touch not himself. So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord.

¹⁰ And I set bounds to it, surrounding it with bars and gates. ¹¹ And I said to it, To this point you shall come, but you shall not go beyond, but your waves shall be confined within you.

⁷ who trouble the depth of the sea, the sounds of its waves.

²⁹ For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For it had seized him at times, and he was bound, kept under guard, with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. ³⁰ Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered into him. ³¹ And he kept imploring Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. ³² Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain. And they kept imploring Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. ³³ Then when the demons came out from the man, they entered into the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

³¹ And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Behold, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. ³² But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

¹³ No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation, He will also make the way out, so as for you to be able to bear it.

¹⁰ Fear none of those things which you are about to suffer. Behold indeed, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

¹ Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. ² And he seized the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, he who deceives the whole world, and he bound him for a thousand years;

⁷ Now after the thousand years, Satan will be released from his prison,

⁹ And let it become dust over all the land of Egypt, and there shall be sore boils breaking forth upon men and upon beasts, in all the land of Egypt. ¹⁰ So he took ashes from the furnace before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered it toward heaven, and it became sore boils breaking forth both on men and on beasts. ¹¹ And the sorcerers could not stand before Moses because of the sores, for the sores were on the sorcerers, and in all the land of Egypt.

²⁷ The Lord shall smite you with the botch of Egypt in the seat, and with a malignant scab, and itch, so that you can not be healed.

³⁵ The Lord shall smite you with an evil sore, on the knees and the legs, so that you shall not be able to be healed from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.

²² And the Lord said to him, In what way? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, You shall deceive him; yea, and you shall prevail: go forth, and do so.

⁵ And my body is covered with loathsome worms; and I waste away, scraping off clods of dust from my eruption.

¹⁷ And by night my bones are confounded; and my sinews are relaxed. ¹⁸ With great force my disease has taken hold of my garment — it has compassed me as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ And You have counted me as clay; my portion in dust and ashes.

³⁰ And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat.

⁶ From the feet to the head, there is no soundness in them; neither wound, nor bruise, nor festering ulcer are healed; it is not possible to apply a plaister, nor oil, nor bandages.

¹⁷ therefore the Lord will humble the chief daughters of Zion, and the Lord will expose their form in that day;

¹¹ They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their ulcers, and they did not repent of their works.

¹⁹ And Tamar took ashes, and put them on her head. And she tore the robe that was on her, and she laid her hands on her head, and went crying continually.

¹⁴ My relatives have not acknowledged me, and they that knew my name have forgotten me. ¹⁵ As for my household, and my maidservants, I was a stranger before them. ¹⁶ I called my servant, but he gives no answer; and my mouth begged him. ¹⁷ And I besought my wife, and earnestly begged the sons of my concubines.

⁶ Therefore I have counted myself vile, and have fainted: and I esteem myself dust and ashes.

⁵ My wounds have become foul and corrupt, because of my foolishness.

⁷ For my soul is filled with mockings; and there is no health in my flesh.

³ that there should be given to them that mourn in Zion glory instead of ashes, the oil of joy to the mourners, the garment of glory for the spirit of heaviness; and they shall be called generations of righteousness, the planting of the Lord for glory.

²⁶ O daughter of My people, gird yourself with sackcloth; sprinkle yourself with ashes; make for yourself pitiable lamentation, as the mourning for a beloved son; for misery will come suddenly upon you.

³⁰ And they shall wail over you with their voice, and cry bitterly, and put earth on their heads, and spread ashes under them.

⁶ And the word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from off his throne, and took off his robe, and put on sackcloth, and sat on ashes.

²¹ "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because if the miracles which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²⁰ But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores, who had been placed at his gate, ²¹ and longing to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. And even the dogs came and would lick his sores.

^{6 (3:7)} And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes to look upon and beautiful to contemplate, and having taken of its fruit she ate, and she gave to her husband also with her, and they ate.

^{12 (3:13)} And Adam said, The woman whom You gave to be with me — she gave me of the tree, and I ate.

⁴ And it came to pass in the time of Solomon's old age, that his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father.

³³ While he was yet speaking with them, behold, a messenger came to him. And he said, Behold, this evil is of the Lord; why should I wait for the Lord any longer?

³ And the Lord said to the devil, Have you then observed My servant Job, that there is none like him upon the earth, a harmless, true, blameless, and godly man; abstaining from all evil? And yet he cleaves to innocence, although you have incited Me to destroy his substance without cause?

⁵ Ah, but put forth Your hand, and touch his bones and his flesh — surely he will curse You to Your face!

¹⁴ Yet such a man says to the Lord, Depart from me; I desire not to know Your ways. ¹⁵ What is the Mighty One, that we should serve Him? And what profit is there that we should approach Him?

¹⁴ You said, He that serves God labors in vain: and what have we gained in that we have kept His ordinances, and in that we have walked as suppliants before the face of the Lord Almighty?

^{17 (3:18)} And to Adam He said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat of it — of that you have eaten, cursed is the ground in your labors, in pain shall you eat of it all the days of your life.

²⁰ And David returned to bless his house. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and saluted him, and said, How was the king of Israel glorified today, who was today uncovered in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the dancers wantonly uncovers himself! ²¹ And David said to Michal, I will dance before the Lord. Blessed be the Lord who chose me before your father, and before all his house, to make me head over His people, even over Israel. Therefore I will play and dance before the Lord.

¹³ And I, where shall I remove my reproach? And you shall be as one of the fools in Israel. And now, speak to the king, for surely he will not keep me from you.

²² And David said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you lie in wait against me this day? Today no man in Israel shall be put to death, for I know not this day if I reign over Israel.

²⁸ For all of my father's house were as dead men before my lord the king; yet you have set your servant among them that eat at your table; and what right have I any longer even to cry to the king?

¹⁰ And the heart of David convicted him after he had numbered the people; and David said to the Lord, I have sinned grievously, O Lord, in what I have now done: remove the iniquity of Your servant, I pray, for I have been exceedingly foolish.

⁹ For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout all the earth, to strengthen every heart that is perfect toward Him. In this you have done foolishly; henceforth there shall be war with you.

¹ There was a certain man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, abstaining from everything evil. ² And he had seven sons and three daughters. ³ And his substance consisted of seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys in the pastures, and a very great household, and he had a great husbandry on the earth; and that man was most noble of the men of the east.

¹⁰ Have You not made a hedge about him, and about his household, and all his possessions round about? And have You not blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his substance upon the land?

¹ For the end, A Song of David, to Jeduthun. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue; I set a guard on my mouth, while the sinner stood in my presence.

¹² For the sin of their mouth, and the word of their lips, let them be even taken in their pride.

⁶ Forsake folly, that you may reign forever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge.

¹³ A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to want a morsel.

³⁸ Out of the mouth of the Most High there shall not come forth evil and good. ³⁹ ( { ξ}) MEM. Why should a living man complain, a man concerning his sin? ⁴⁰ ( { π}) NUN. Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our hearts with our hand to the lofty One in heaven.

³⁴ Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ A good man out of his good treasure brings forth good things, and an evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil things. ³⁶ But I say to you, that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned."

²³ But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block unto Me, because you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."

² Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

¹¹ Then Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"

¹² rejoicing in hope, enduring in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;

⁹ Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we respected them. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days were disciplining us, as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, in order to partake of His holiness. ¹¹ Now no discipline seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, later it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those having been trained by it.

² For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a mature man, able also to bridle the whole body.

¹⁰ My brothers, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of evil suffering and of longsuffering. ¹¹ Indeed we count those blessed who endure. You have heard of the patience of Job, and you saw the end of the Lord--that He is compassionate and He is merciful.

² And she bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

¹¹ And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the son of Esau, even the sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau; Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz,

^{35 (37:34)} And all his sons and his daughters gathered themselves together, and came to comfort him; but he would not be comforted, saying, I will go down to my son mourning to Hades; and his father wept for him.

³² And the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine, were Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan were Dedan, and Sheba.

¹⁴ Mercy has rejected me; and the visitation of the Lord has disregarded me.

¹⁹ Behold the ways of the Temanites, you that mark the paths of the Sabaeans.

¹ Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, and said,

⁴ But you are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases.

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all!

^{20 (16:21)} Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let my eye weep before Him.

¹ Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,

¹⁹ They that saw me abhorred me: the very persons whom I had loved, rose up against me.

²¹ Pity me, pity me, O my friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me.

⁷ And it came to pass after the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, You have sinned, and your two friends, for you have not said anything true before Me, as My servant Job has.

¹¹ And all his brothers and sisters heard all that had happened to him, and they came to him, and so did all that had known him from the first; and they ate and drank with him, and comforted him, and wondered at all that the Lord had brought upon him: and each one gave him a lamb, and four drachmas of gold, even of unstamped gold.

¹⁷ A friend loves at all times, and let brothers be useful in distress, for on this account are they born.

¹⁰ Do not forsake your own friend or your father's friend, nor go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity; better is a friend that is near than a brother living far off.

¹⁹ Wherefore these things are against you; who shall sympathize with you in your grief? Downfall and destruction, famine and sword; who shall comfort you?

⁷ Concerning Edom, thus says the Lord: There is no longer wisdom in Teman, counsel has perished from the wise ones, their wisdom is gone,

¹⁹ And many of the Jews had come to the women around Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning their brother.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those that rejoice, and weep with those that weep.

²⁶ And if one part suffers, all the parts suffer together; or if one part is honored, all the parts rejoice together.

³ Remember the prisoners as if having been bound with them, those who are ill treated, as you yourselves are in the body also.

³⁴ And it came to pass when Esau heard the words of his father Isaac, he cried out with a great and very bitter cry, and said, Bless me — me also, father!

⁶ And Joshua tore his clothes. And Joshua fell on the earth on his face before the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they cast dust on their heads.

⁴ And it came to pass when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

¹⁹ Now they both went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they arrived at Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them, and they said, Is this Naomi? ²⁰ And she said to them, No, do not call me Naomi; call me 'Bitter,' for the Mighty One has dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. And why do you call me Naomi, seeing the Lord has humbled me and the Mighty One has afflicted me?

⁴ And the messengers came to Gibeah to Saul, and they spoke the words into the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁴ And David and his men lifted up their voice, and wept till there was no longer any power within them to weep.

³⁶ And it came to pass when he had finished speaking, that behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voices and wept; and the king also and all his servants wept with a very great weeping.

¹ Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel assembled with fasting, and in sackcloth, and with ashes on their head.

¹ But Mordecai, having perceived what was done, tore his clothes, and put on sackcloth, and sprinkled dust upon himself. And having rushed forth through the open street of the city, he cried with a loud voice, A nation that has done no wrong is going to be destroyed!

²⁰ So Job arose and tore his clothes, and shaved the hair of his head, and fell on the ground and worshipped,

¹⁴ My relatives have not acknowledged me, and they that knew my name have forgotten me.

¹⁰ ( { ι}) JOD. The elders of the daughter of Zion have sat upon the ground, they have kept silence; they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth; they have brought down to the ground the chief virgins in Jerusalem.

⁷ ( { ζ}) ZAIN. Her Nazarites were made purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were purified as with fire, their polishing was superior to sapphire stone. ⁸ ( { η}) HETH. Their countenance has become blacker than smoke; they are not known in the streets: their skin has cleaved to their bones; they are withered, they have become as a stick.

¹⁹ "And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and sorrowing, and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city, by which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! Because in one hour she was laid waste.'

⁵ And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night, and there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

⁸ And God called the firmament Heaven, and God saw that it was good, and there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

¹⁰ And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan; and they bewailed him with a great and very sore lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

³ And when I heard this thing, I tore my clothes, and trembled, and plucked some of the hairs of my head and of my beard, and sat down mourning.

⁴ And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for several days, and continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

² Have you been often spoken to in distress? But who shall endure the force of your words?

⁴ All my enemies set a watch against me; I was troubled, and spoke not.

²⁶ And the stores of your ornaments shall mourn, and you shall be left alone, and shall be leveled to the ground.

¹ Come down, sit on the ground, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called tender and luxurious.

¹⁵ Then I passed through the air and came into the captivity, and went round to those that dwelt by the River Chebar who were there; and I sat there seven days, conversant in the midst of them.
