¹ And Israel sojourned in Shittim, and the people profaned themselves by committing harlotry with the daughters of Moab. ² And they called them to the sacrifices of their idols; and the people ate of their sacrifices, and worshipped their idols. ³ And Israel consecrated themselves to Baal of Peor; and the Lord was very angry with Israel. ⁴ And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the princes of the people, and make them examples of judgment for the Lord in the face of the sun, and the anger of the Lord shall be turned away from Israel. ⁵ And Moses said to the tribes of Israel, Every one of you kill his friend that is consecrated to Baal of Peor. ⁶ And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought his brother to a Midianite woman before Moses, and before all the congregation of the children of Israel; and they were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of witness. ⁷ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose out of the midst of the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand, ⁸ and went in after the Israelite man into the chamber, and pierced them both through, both the Israelite man, and the woman through her womb; and the plague was stopped from the children of Israel. ⁹ And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand. ¹⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹¹ Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest has caused My wrath to cease from the children of Israel, when I was exceedingly jealous among them, and I did not consume the children of Israel in My jealousy. ¹² Therefore say, Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace; ¹³ and he and his seed after him shall have a perpetual covenant of priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel. ¹⁴ Now the name of the smitten Israelite man, who was smitten with the Midianite woman, was Zambri son of Salmon, prince of a house of the tribe of Simeon. ¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman who was smitten, was Cozbi, daughter of Zur, a prince of the nation of Hommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Midian. ¹⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ¹⁷ Harass the Midianites as enemies, and strike them, ¹⁸ for they are enemies to you by the treachery in which they ensnare you through Peor, and through Cozbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Midian, who was smitten in the day of the plague because of Peor.

¹⁵ And Moses said to them, Why have you saved every female alive? ¹⁶ For they were the occasion to the children of Israel by the word of Balaam of their revolting and despising the word of the Lord, because of Peor. And there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord.

⁴⁹ And they encamped by Jordan between Jesimoth, as far as Belsa to the west of Moab.

¹ And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two young men to spy the land, saying, Go up and view the land; especially Jericho. And the two young men went and entered into Jericho; and they entered into the house of a harlot, whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.

¹ And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and departed from Shittim; and they came as far as the Jordan, and lodged there before they crossed over.

²⁶ And I find her to be, and I will pronounce to be more bitter than death, the woman which is a snare, and her heart nets, who has a band in her hands. He that is good in the sight of God shall be delivered from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her.

⁵ O My people, remember now, what counsel Balak king of Moab took against you, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, from the reeds to Gilgal; that the righteousness of the Lord might be known.

⁸ Nor let us commit fornication, just as some of them fornicated, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell;

¹⁴ But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, both to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit fornication.

⁵ You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, recompensing the sins of the fathers upon the children, to the third and fourth generation to them that hate Me,

²⁴ You shall not worship their gods, nor serve them. You shall not do according to their works, but shall utterly destroy them, and break to pieces their pillars.

¹⁵ lest at any time you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and sacrifice to their gods, and they call you, and you should eat of their feasts, ¹⁶ and you should take of their daughters to your sons, and you should give of your daughters to their sons; and your daughters should go a whoring after their gods, and your sons should go a whoring after their gods.

³⁸ The fat of whose sacrifices you ate, and you drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them arise and help you, and be your protectors.

¹⁷ Is the sin of Peor too little for you, whereas we have not been cleansed from it until this day, though there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord?

⁷ that you go not in among these nations that are left; and the names of their gods shall not be named among you, neither shall you serve them, neither shall you bow down to them.

¹⁶ when you transgress the covenant of the Lord our God, which He has commanded us, and go and serve other gods, and bow down to them.

¹ And King Solomon was a lover of women. And he took strange women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite and Ammonite women, Syrians and Edomites, Hittites and Amorites; ² of the nations concerning whom the Lord forbade the children of Israel, saying, You shall not go in to them, and they shall not come in to you, lest they turn away your hearts after their idols; Solomon clung to these in love. ³ And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines. And the strange women turned away his heart after their gods. ⁴ And it came to pass in the time of Solomon's old age, that his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. ⁵ For Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the abomination of the Sidonians. ⁶ And Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord: he went not after the Lord, as David his father. ⁷ Then Solomon built a high place to Chemosh the idol of Moab, and to their king the idol of the children of Ammon. ⁸ And thus he acted towards all his strange wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed to their idols.

¹⁸ And you shall leave in Israel seven thousand men, all the knees which had not bowed themselves to Baal, and every mouth which had not worshipped him.

²⁸ They were joined also to Baal of Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked Him with their deeds;

¹⁰ I found Israel as grapes in the wilderness, and I saw their fathers as an early watchman in a fig tree. They went in to Baal Peor, and were shamefully estranged, and the abominable became as the beloved.

²⁰ No, but that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not desire that you should have fellowship with demons.

²⁷ And if any of the unbelievers invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, questioning nothing, for conscience' sake. ²⁸ But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for his conscience' sake; for "The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness."

¹⁶ And what union is there for the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God, just as God has said: "I will dwell in them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." ¹⁷ Therefore "Come out from the midst of them and be separated," says the Lord. "Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you."

⁵ And Moses said to the tribes of Israel, Every one of you kill his friend that is consecrated to Baal of Peor.

³ Your eyes have seen all that the Lord our God did in Baal Peor; for every man that went after Baal of Peor, the Lord your God has utterly destroyed him from among you. ⁴ But you that kept close to the Lord your God are all alive this day.

¹⁴ And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and He gave them into the hands of the plunderers, and they plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, and they could not any longer resist their enemies,

²⁰ And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Because this nation has forsaken My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice,

¹¹ Who knows the power of Your wrath?

²⁸ They were joined also to Baal of Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked Him with their deeds; ²⁹ and destruction was multiplied among them.

⁶ And if your brother by your father or mother, or your son, or daughter, or your wife in your bosom, or friend who is equal to your own soul, entreat you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known, ⁷ of the gods of the nations that are round about you, who are near you or at a distance from you, from one end of the earth to the other; ⁸ you shall not consent to him, neither shall you hearken to him; and your eye shall not spare him, you shall feel no regret for him, neither shall you at all protect him: ⁹ you shall surely report concerning him, and your hands shall be upon him among the first to slay him, and the hands of all the people at the last.

¹³ Evil men have gone out from you, and have caused all the inhabitants of their land to fall away, saying, Let us go and worship other gods, whom you knew not,

¹⁵ you shall utterly destroy all the inhabitants of that land with the edge of the sword; you shall solemnly curse it, and all things in it.

¹⁷ And none of the cursed things shall cleave to your hand, that the Lord may turn from His fierce anger, and show you mercy, and pity you, and multiply you, as He swore to your fathers;

²³ his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you shall by all means bury it in that day; for everyone that is hanged on a tree is cursed of God; and you shall by no means defile the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance.

²⁵ And Joshua said to Achan, Why have you destroyed us? The Lord destroy you this day! And all Israel stoned him with stones. ²⁶ And they set up over him a great heap of stones; and the Lord ceased from His fierce anger. Therefore he called the place the Valley of Achor to this day.

³ You have caused all Your wrath to cease; You have turned from Your fierce anger. ⁴ Turn us, O God of our salvation, and turn Your anger away from us.

⁹ Who knows if God will relent, and turn from His fierce anger, and so we shall not perish?

²¹ Also you shall select for yourself able men out of all the people, God fearing men, righteous men, hating pride, and you shall set over the people captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens.

²⁵ And Moses chose out able men out of all Israel, and he made them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties and captains of tens over the people. ²⁶ And they judged the people at all times; and every matter too burdensome they brought to Moses, but every light matter they judged themselves.

²⁰ He that sacrifices to any gods but to the Lord alone, shall be destroyed by death.

⁴⁰ And Elijah said to the people, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon, and he executed them there.

³⁰ And whatever soul either of the natives or of the strangers shall do anything with a presumptuous hand, he will provoke God; that soul shall be cut off from his people, ³¹ for he has despised the word of the Lord, and broken His commands; that soul shall be utterly destroyed, his sin is upon him.

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now shall this assembly lick up all that are round about us, as a calf would lick up the green herbs of the field. And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

² Avenge the wrongs of the children of Israel on the Midianites, and afterwards you shall be added to your people.

⁹ And they made a prey of the women of Midian, and their store, and their cattle, and all their possessions; and they spoiled their forces. ¹⁰ And they burned with fire all their cities in the places of their habitation, and they burned their villages with fire. ¹¹ And they took all their plunder, and all their spoils, both man and beast. ¹² And they brought to Moses and to Eleazar the priest, and to all the children of Israel, the captives, and the spoils, and the plunder, to the camp to Araboth Moab, which is at the Jordan by Jericho. ¹³ And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the rulers of the synagogue went forth out of the camp to meet them. ¹⁴ And Moses was angry with the captains of the army, the heads of thousands and the heads of hundreds who came from the battle array.

¹⁹ And it shall be if one shall hear the words of this curse, and shall flatter himself in his heart, saying, Let good happen to me, for I will walk in the error of my heart, lest the sinner destroy the guiltless with him: ²⁰ God shall by no means be willing to pardon him, but then the wrath of the Lord and His jealousy shall flame out against that man; and all the curses of this covenant shall attach themselves to him, which are written in this book, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ And the Lord shall separate that man for evil of all the children of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in the book of this law.

⁴ And it came to pass when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

¹ And when these things were finished, the princes drew near to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands in their abominations, even the Cannanite, the Hittites, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Ammonite, the Moabite, and the Moserite and the Amorite. ² For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and their sons, and the holy seed has passed among the nations of the lands, and the hand of the rulers has been first in this transgression. ³ And when I heard this thing, I tore my clothes, and trembled, and plucked some of the hairs of my head and of my beard, and sat down mourning. ⁴ Then there assembled to me all that followed the word of the God of Israel, on account of the transgression of the captivity; and I remained mourning until the evening sacrifice.

⁶ And Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went to the treasury of Johanan the son of Eliashib. And when he came there, he ate no bread, and drank no water, for he mourned over the unfaithfulness of those of the captivity. ⁷ And they made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should assemble at Jerusalem, saying, ⁸ Everyone who shall not arrive within three days, as is the counsel of the rulers and the elders, all his substance shall be forfeited, and he shall be separated from the congregation of the captivity. ⁹ So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. This was the ninth month. On the twentieth day of the month all the people sat down in the street of the house of the Lord, because of their alarm concerning the word, and because of the storm.

¹² And the Lord, the Lord of hosts, called in that day for weeping, and lamentation, and baldness, and for girding with sackcloth;

³ And you retained many shepherds for a stumbling block to yourself. You had a whore's face; you became shameless toward all.

²³ And it came to pass when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut them off with a penknife, and cast them into the fire that was on the hearth, until the whole scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

¹⁵ then hear the word of the Lord. ⁴ So Johanan, and all the leaders of the army, and all the people, refused to hearken to the voice of the Lord, to dwell in the land of Judah. ⁵ And Johanan, and all the leaders of the army, took all the remnant of Judah, who had returned to dwell in the land; ⁶ the mighty men, and the women, and the children that were left, and the daughters of the king, and the people which Nebuzaradan had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah. ⁷ And they came into Egypt, for they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord, and they entered into Tahpanhes.

And so we were filled with bread, and were well, and saw no evils.

⁴ and said to him, Go through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark on the foreheads of the men that groan and that grieve for all the iniquities that are done in the midst of them. ⁵ And He said to the first in my hearing, Go after him into the city, and strike: and let not your eyes spare, neither have mercy. ⁶ Utterly slay old man and youth, and virgin and infants and women: but do not go near any on whom is the mark: begin at My sanctuary. So they began with the elder men who were within in the house.

¹⁷ Between the porch and the altar let the priests that minister to the Lord weep, and say, Spare Your people, O Lord, and give not Your heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them, lest they should say among the heathen, Where is their God?

¹³ receiving the wages of unrighteousness, counting as a pleasure to revel in the daytime, they are spots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions while they feast with you, ¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery and unable to cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart having been trained in greediness, they are accursed children. ¹⁵ They have left behind the straight way and gone astray, having followed after the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

¹³ raging waves on the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars for whom the darkness of the netherworld has been reserved forever.

²⁵ And Eleazar the son of Aaron took for himself one of the daughters of Putiel as wife, and she bore to him Phinehas. These are the heads of the family of the Levites, according to their generations.

³⁰ And Phinehas the priest and all the chiefs of the congregation of Israel who were with him heard the words which the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh spoke, and it pleased them. ³¹ And Phinehas the priest said to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the half of the tribe of Manasseh, Today we know that the Lord is with us, because you have not trespassed grievously against the Lord, and because you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.

²⁸ and Phineas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron stood before it in those days; and the children of Israel inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall we yet again go forth to fight with our brethren the sons of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Go up, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.

⁹ And an evil spirit from God was upon Saul, and he was resting in his house, and a spear was in his hand, and David was playing on the harp with his hands.

³⁰ Then Phinehas stood up and made atonement, and the plague ceased.

⁴⁶ And Moses said to Aaron, Take a censer, and put on it fire from the altar, and put incense on it, and carry it away quickly into the camp, and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone forth from the presence of the Lord, and it has begun to destroy the people. ⁴⁷ And Aaron did as Moses spoke to him, and ran among the congregation, for already the plague had begun among the people; and he put in the incense, and made an atonement for the people. ⁴⁸ And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague ceased.

²⁵ And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered up whole burnt offerings and peace offerings; and Solomon made an addition to the altar afterwards, for it was little at first. And the Lord hearkened to the land, and the plague was withdrawn from Israel.

²² And David said to Ornan, Give me your place of the threshing floor, and I will build upon it an altar to the Lord: give it to me for its worth in money, and the plague shall cease from among the people.

²⁹ and destruction was multiplied among them. ³⁰ Then Phinehas stood up and made atonement, and the plague ceased. ³¹ And it was counted to him for righteousness, to all generations forever.

³⁷ the men that spoke evil reports against the land, died of the plague before the Lord.

⁴⁹ And those that died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those that died on account of Korah. ⁵⁰ And Aaron returned to Moses to the door of the tabernacle of witness, and the plague ceased.

¹⁴ For you shall not worship strange gods, for the Lord God, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God;

²⁴ For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

²⁰ God shall by no means be willing to pardon him, but then the wrath of the Lord and His jealousy shall flame out against that man; and all the curses of this covenant shall attach themselves to him, which are written in this book, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven.

¹⁶ They provoked Me to anger with strange gods; with their abominations they bitterly angered Me.

²¹ They have provoked Me to jealousy by that which is not God, they have exasperated Me with their idols; and I will provoke them to jealousy with them that are not a nation, I will anger them with a nation void of understanding.

¹⁹ And Joshua said to the people, Indeed you will not be able to serve the Lord, for God is holy; and He being jealous will not forgive your sins and your transgressions.

¹⁴ And they buried the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, and the bones of them that had been hanged, in the land of Benjamin in the hill, in the tomb of Kish his father; and they did all things that the king commanded. And after this God hearkened to the prayers of the land.

²² And Rehoboam did evil in the sight of the Lord; and he provoked Him in all the things which their fathers did in their sins which they sinned.

⁵⁸ And they provoked Him with their high places, and moved Him to jealousy with their graven images.

²³ So He said that He would have destroyed them, had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach, to turn Him away from the fierceness of His anger, so that He should not destroy them.

³⁸ And I will be avenged on you with the vengeance of an adulteress, and I will bring upon you blood of fury and jealousy.

² God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; the Lord avenges with wrath; the Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries, and He cuts off His enemies.

¹⁸ And their silver and their gold shall by no means be able to rescue them in the day of the Lord's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of His jealously; for He will bring a speedy destruction on all them that inhabit the land.

⁸ Therefore wait upon Me, says the Lord, until the day when I rise up for a witness: because My judgment shall be on the gatherings of the nations, to draw to Me kings, to pour out upon them all My fierce anger: for the whole earth shall be consumed with the fire of My jealousy.

³⁶ He who believes in the Son has eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

² For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy, for I have betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.

²⁹ And Amalek dwells in the land toward the south: and the Hittite and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwells in the hill country: and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and by the River Jordan.

¹⁰ shall the mountains depart, nor shall your hills be removed; so neither shall My mercy fail you, nor shall the covenant of your peace be at all removed; for the Lord who is gracious to you has spoken it.

²⁵ And I will make with David a covenant of peace, and I will utterly destroy evil beasts from off the land; and they shall dwell in the wilderness, and sleep in the forests.

⁴ And you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, that My covenant might be with the sons of Levi, says the Lord Almighty. ⁵ My covenant of life and peace was with him, and I gave it to him that he might reverently fear Me, and that he might be awe struck at My name.

¹ Behold, I send forth My messenger, and he shall survey the way before Me: and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come into His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, whom you take pleasure in: behold, He is coming, says the Lord Almighty.

⁹ And you shall gird them with sashes, and put the hats upon them, and they shall have a priestly office unto Me forever; and you shall fill the hands of Aaron and the hands of his sons.

³⁰ And it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, You have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up to God, that I may make atonement for your sin.

¹⁵ And you shall anoint them as you anointed their father, and they shall minister to Me as priests; and it shall be that they shall have an everlasting anointing of priesthood, throughout their generations.

⁴⁶ And Moses said to Aaron, Take a censer, and put on it fire from the altar, and put incense on it, and carry it away quickly into the camp, and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone forth from the presence of the Lord, and it has begun to destroy the people.

¹² And the children of Israel will not be able to stand before their enemies; they will turn their back before their enemies, for they have become an accursed thing: I will no longer be with you, unless you remove the accursed thing from yourselves.

³⁰ Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: I said, Your house and the house of your father shall pass before Me forever: but now the Lord says, Far be it from Me; for I will only honor them that honor Me, and he that despises Me shall be despised.

³ And David said to the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of the Lord?

²⁷ And Solomon removed Abiathar from being a priest of the Lord, that the word of the Lord might be fulfilled, which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

⁹ For the zeal of Your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached You have fallen upon me.

³¹ And it was counted to him for righteousness, to all generations forever.

¹³⁹ Your zeal has quite wasted me; because my enemies have forgotten Your words.

⁶ But you shall be called priests of the Lord, the ministers of God; you shall eat the strength of nations, and shall be admired because of their wealth.

¹⁷ Then His disciples remembered that it was written, "The zeal for Your house will consume Me."

³ "I am indeed a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but having been brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been educated according to the exactness of the law of our forefathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today. ⁴ I, who persecuted this Way to death, binding and handing over to prisons both men and women, ⁵ as also the high priest testifies of me, along with the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus in order to bring those who were there, having been bound, to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. ³ For they, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. ⁴ For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes.

¹⁷ Therefore He was obligated to become like His brothers in all respects, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, in order that He might make propitiation for the sins of the people.

¹¹ Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law), why is there yet a need for another priest to rise, according to the order of Melchizedek, and not to be called according to the order of Aaron?

¹⁷ For He testifies: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." ¹⁸ For on the one hand an annulment comes about of the preceding commandment on account of its weakness and uselessness.

⁵ you also, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

⁹ But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellent virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

² And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only concerning ours, but also concerning those of the whole world.

⁶ and He made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

¹⁸ For when they speak haughty words of emptiness, they entice through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, those who are escaping from those who are living in error,
