⁵ And, indeed, seeing that the wine is treacherous; the master is ostentatious, and he is not resting, who widens his soul as the unseen, and he is as death and is not satisfied. And he is gathering to him all the nations, and he is convening to him all the peoples."

¹⁰ You have certainly smitten Edom, and your heart has lifted you up; be honored, and abide in your house; and why do you stir yourself up in evil, that you have fallen, you, and Judah with you?.

⁶ Though Yahweh is exalted, yet He discerns the lowly, And He knows the haughty one from afar."

¹ Wine is a mocker; an intoxicant is a discomfiter; And anyone led into error by it is not wise.

²⁹ Who has woe? who has uneasiness? who has quarrels? Who has deep concerns? who has gratuitous injuries? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰ They have who delay over wine, Who come to investigate a blend." ³¹ Do not stare at wine when it is red, When it casts its sparkle in the cup and goes down evenly." ³² Its aftereffect shall bite like a serpent And spread pain like a yellow viper. ³³ Your eyes shall see strange things, And your heart shall speak wayward thoughts."

²⁰ The unseen and Abaddon are never satisfied, And the eyes of man are also never satisfied."

¹³ A breed of men--how exalted are their eyes And lifted up are their eyelids! ¹⁴ A breed of men whose teeth are swords, And whose canines are knives, To devour the humble from the earth And the needy from mankind." ¹⁵ The leech has two daughters, crying:Grant to us, grant to us! They are three that are never satisfied, Four that never say, Enough wealth!:" ¹⁶ The unseen and the restrained womb, The earth when it is not satisfied with water, And fire that never says:Enough wealth!"

⁴ It must not be for kings, O Lemuel, It must not be for kings to drink wine, Or for chancellors to yearn for intoxicant, ⁵ Lest such a one should drink and forget the statute, And alter the adjudication of all the sons of humiliation."

¹⁰ One who loves silver is never satisfied with his silver, And one who loves large amounts never has enough income; This too is vanity."

¹¹ The eyes of the haughty human are low, and prostrate is the highness of mortals, and Yahweh alone is impregnable in that day." ¹² For a day for Yahweh of hosts is on everyone proud and high, and on everyone lifted up, and abased is he."

¹⁷ And prostrate is the haughtiness of humanity, and abased is the highness of mortals, and Yahweh alone is impregnable in that day."

⁸ Woe to those touching house to house, bringing field near to field unto the limits of a place! That from an associate they may withdraw it, and it causes you to dwell all alone within the land!"

¹¹ Woe! Early morning risers, pursuing an intoxicant! Delaying in the gloaming, wine is making them flare up." ¹² And coming are harp and zither, tambourine and flute. And wine is in their feasts. Yet at the contrivance of Yahweh they are not looking. And the doing of His hands they do not see."

²² Woe to masters of wine drinking, and mortals valorous in blending an intoxicant, ²³ who justify the wicked as the consequence of a bribe, and the righteousness of the righteous are taking away from him."

⁷ Yet he, not so is he planning, and his heart, not so is devising, for to exterminate is in his heart, and to cut off nations not a few." ⁸ For saying is he, "Are not my chiefs altogether kings? ⁹ Is not, as Carchemish, Calno? Should not, as Arphad, be Hamath? Should not, as Damascus, be Samaria? ¹⁰ As my hand found all the kingdoms of the forbidden idols, and their carvings, more than Jerusalem's and than Samaria's, ¹¹ shall I not, as I did to Samaria and to her forbidden idols, so do to Jerusalem and to her grief fetishes? ¹² Yet it comes, when Yahweh will clip off all His doings in mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I will visit evil on the fruit of the insolent heart of the king of Assyria, and the high beauty of his eyes." ¹³ For, says he, "By the vigor of my hand I did it, and by my wisdom, for understanding have I. And I am taking away the boundaries of the peoples, and their equipment I rob. And I am bringing down, as a sturdy one, their dwellers,

¹⁶ Those seeing you will peer at you and consider you:"Is this the man who was the disturber of the earth, the quaker of kingdoms? ¹⁷ He made all the habitance as a wilderness, and its cities he demolished, for his prisoners he opened not a homeward way."

⁶ We hear of the pomp of Moab. Exceedingly proud is his pride, and his pomp and his rage. Wherefore his pretenses."

⁵ Arrange the table! Watch, yea, watch! Eat! Drink! Rise, chiefs! Anoint the shield!"

⁹ Lo, I am sending, and have taken all the families of the north--an affirmation of Yahweh--even unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and have brought them in against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations round about, and have devoted them, and appointed them for an astonishment, and for a hissing, and for wastes eonian."

¹⁷ `And I take the cup out of the hand of Yahweh, and cause all the nations to drink unto whom Yahweh sent me:" ¹⁸ Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, And its kings, its heads, To give them to waste, to astonishment, To hissing, and to reviling, as [at] this day." ¹⁹ Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, And his heads, and all his people, ²⁰ And all the mixed people, And all the kings of the land of Uz, And all the kings of the land of the Philistines, And Ashkelon, and Gazzah, and Ekron, And the remnant of Ashdod, ²¹ Edom, and Moab, and the sons of Ammon, ²² And all the kings of Tyre, And all the kings of Zidon, And the kings of the isle that [is] beyond the sea, ²³ Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, And all cutting the corners [of the beard], ²⁴ And all the kings of Arabia, And all the kings of the mixed people, Who are dwelling in the wilderness, ²⁵ And all the kings of Zimri, And all the kings of Elam, And all the kings of Media, ²⁶ And all the kings of the north, The near and the far off, one unto another, And all the kingdoms of the earth, That [are] on the face of the ground, And king Sheshach drinks after them." ²⁷ And you have said unto them:Thus said Yahweh of Hosts Elohim of Israel, Drink you, yea drink abundantly, And vomit, and fall, and rise not, Because of the sword that I am sending among you." ²⁸ And it has come to pass, When they refuse to receive the cup out of your hand to drink, That you have said unto them:Thus said Yahweh of Hosts, You do certainly drink." ²⁹ For lo, in the city over which My name is called, I am beginning to do evil, And you--you are entirely acquitted! You are not acquitted, for a sword I am proclaiming, For all inhabitants of the land, An affirmation of Yahweh of Hosts."

²⁹ Summon unto Babylon archers, all treading the bow, Encamp against her round about, Let [her] have no escape; Recompense to her according to her work, According to all that she did--do to her, For unto Yahweh she has been proud, Unto the Holy One of Israel."

³⁹ In their heat I make their banquets, And I have caused them to drink, so that they exult, And have slept a sleep eonian, And awake not--an affirmation of Yahweh."

¹ Belshazzar the king makes a grand dinner for a thousand of his grandees and is drinking turbid wine in view of the thousand. ² When tasting the turbid wine, Belshazzar says to bring hither the gold and silver vessels of the house of Eloah which his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, that they may drink from them--the king and his grandees, his consorts and his concubines." ³ Then they bring hither the gold and silver vessels which they had taken from the temple, the house of the Eloah in Jerusalem. And they drink from them--the king and his grandees, his consorts and his concubines." ⁴ They drink the turbid wine and laud the elohim of gold, silver, copper, iron, wood, and stone."

²⁰ Yet when his heart was exalted and his spirit was mightily arrogant, he was deposed from the throne of his kingdom and they caused his esteem to pass away from him:" ²¹ From the sons of mortals was he shoved, his heart was made equal to an animal's and with the wild donkeys was his abode. Herbage are they feeding to him, as oxen, and by the night mist of the heavens was his frame streaked, till he knew that the Supreme Eloah is in authority in the kingdom of mortals, and whom He is willing is He setting up over it." ²² Yet you, his grandson Belshazzar, you abase not your heart in Eloah's sight, forasmuch as all this you know." ²³ Over the Lord, the Eloah of the heavens, you exalt yourself; the vessels of His house they bring hither before you; you and your grandees, your consorts and your concubines are drinking turbid wine from them. Also elohim of silver, gold, copper, iron, wood, and stone who are not perceiving and not hearing and not knowing, these you laud, yet the Eloah in Whose hand is your breath, and for Whom are all your paths, Him you do not honor."

⁹ What are you devising against Yahweh? He will make a finish; distress is not rising a second time. ¹⁰ Though they are still as entangled briars, and as those groggy with their grog, they shall be devoured as straw fully dry."

⁴ Behold! it is made presumptuous:his soul is not upright in him. Yet the just one by his faith shall live.

⁸ Seeing that you loot many nations, all the rest of the peoples will loot you because of human blood and the violence to the land, to the town and all dwelling in it." ⁹ Woe to him gaining an evil gain for his house in order to place his nest in the height, to be rescued from the clutch of evil!" ¹⁰ You counsel shame for your house to cut away many peoples, and are sinning against your soul,

¹¹ and that you be ambitious to be quiet, and to be engaged in your own affairs, and to be working with your hands, according as we charge you,

⁶ Yet greater is the grace He is giving. Wherefore He is saying, God "the proud is resisting, yet to the humble He is giving grace."
