⁵ For your depravity trains your mouth, And you choose the tongue of the crafty.

¹³ Seizing the wise in their craftiness, So that their cunning counsel is carried headlong.

²² It is all one. Therefore I say, Both the flawless and wicked one Will He bring to their end. ²³ If a scourge brings death suddenly, He derides the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covers the faces of its judges; If not He, indeed who is it?

⁶ The tents of devastators are at ease, And for those disturbing El there is serenity, For him who brings along an eloah in his hand.

¹⁹ You have given your mouth free rein for evil, And your tongue, it is paired with deceit." ²⁰ You speak shame against your brother; You give out scandal against your mother's son.

² Your tongue devises woes, Like a honed razor, you who practice deceit." ³ You love evil rather than good, Falsehood rather than speaking righteousness. {Interlude{ " ⁴ You love all pernicious words, O you deceitful tongue."

³ Who whet their tongue like a sword; They position their arrow--a bitter word--

² O Yahweh, do rescue my soul From the false lip, From the deceitful tongue." ³ What shall He give to you, And what more shall He add for you, Deceitful tongue?

³ And they bend their tongue, their bow [is] a lie, And not for stedfastness have they been mighty in the land, For from evil unto evil they have gone forth, And Me they have not known, An affirmation of Yahweh!" ⁴ Each of his friend--beware you, And on any brother, do not trust, For every brother does utterly supplant, For every friend slanderously does walk, ⁵ And each at his friend they mock, And truth they do not speak, They taught their tongue to speak falsehood, To commit iniquity they have labored."

⁸ A slaughtering arrow [is] their tongue, Deceit it has spoken in its mouth, Peace with its neighbor it speaks, And in its heart it lays its ambush,

²¹ For from inside, out of the heart of men, are going out evil reasonings, prostitutions, thefts, murders, ²² adulteries, greed, wickedness, guile, wantonness, a wicked eye, calumny, pride, imprudence."

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart is bringing forth that which is good, and the wicked man out of the wicked treasure of his heart is bringing forth that which is wicked, for out of the superabundance of the heart his mouth is speaking."

²⁶ If anyone is seeming to be a ritualist, not bridling his tongue, but seducing his heart, the ritual of this one is vain,

⁵ Thus the tongue, also, is a little member and is grandiloquent. Lo! What amount of fire is kindling what amount of material!" ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of injustice. The tongue is constituted among our members that which is spotting the whole body, and setting the wheel of our lineage aflame, and is set aflame by Gehenna." ⁷ For every nature, both of wild beasts and flying creatures, both of reptiles and those of the salt sea, is tamed and has been tamed by human nature." ⁸ Yet the tongue can no man tame - a turbulent evil, distended with death-carrying venom."
