¹ Then Job answered and said: ² O that my vexation could be weighed, yea weighed. And they could take up my woe upon the scales together with it. ³ Because now it is heavier than the sand of the seas, Therefore my words are impetuous. ⁴ For the arrows of Him Who Suffices are in me; Their venom is what my spirit has been drinking; Frightenings from Eloah are arrayed against me. ⁵ Does an onager bray over verdure? Would a bull low over its fodder? ⁶ Is insipid food being eaten without salt? Or is there taste in the ooze of purslane? ⁷ My soul refuses to touch them; They are like bread of sickness to me. ⁸ O that He would grant that my request would come, That Eloah would grant my expectation, ⁹ That Eloah would be disposed to crush me! May He let loose His hand and clip me off! ¹⁰ Then there would still be some consolation for me, And I would caper in this travail which He is not sparing, For I have not suppressed the words of the Holy One. ¹¹ What is my vigor that I should wait? And what is my end that I should prolong my soul? ¹² Is my vigor the vigor of stones, Or my flesh like copper? ¹³ Isn't it that there is nothing in me to help myself, And all prosperity has been expelled from me? ¹⁴ For one who is overthrown there should be kindness from his associates, Even if he should forsake the fear of Him Who Suffices. ¹⁵ My brothers, they are treacherous like a watercourse, Like a channel of watercourses that overflow, ¹⁶ That become somber because of ice, And snow obscures them. ¹⁷ In the season when they thaw they are effaced; When it is warm they are extinguished from their place. ¹⁸ Caravans are sent aside from their way; They ascend into the wasteland and perish. ¹⁹ The caravans of Tema look for waters; The wayfarers of Sheba expect to find them. ²⁰ But they are ashamed that each one trusted the place; They come to it, and they are abashed. ²¹ Thus have you now become to me; You see dismay, and you are fearful. ²² Indeed have I said, Grant something to me? Or, Pay a bribe from your fortune in my behalf? ²³ Or, Make my escape from the hand of the foe? Or, You shall ransom me from the hand of terrifiers? ²⁴ Direct me, and I shall keep silent, And where I have erred, make me understand. ²⁵ How savory are words of uprightness, Yet how can correction from you be correcting? ²⁶ Are you designing to correct with declarations, Yet mean to treat as wind the words of a desperate man? ²⁷ Indeed, you would cast lots for the orphan, And you would barter over your associate. ²⁸ Yet now be kindly disposed; face me, For should I lie to your face? ²⁹ Relent, I pray; let it not become iniquity, And relent further; my righteousness is at stake in it. ³⁰ Is there iniquity on my tongue? Or does not my palate understand woes?

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

⁵ But now it is coming on you, and you tire; It is touching unto you, and you panic.

² Today as well, my meditation will seem rebellious; His hand is heavy on my sighing.

⁶ (Let Him weigh me in the scales of justice, And let Eloah know my integrity),

¹⁹ Inform us what we should say to Him; We cannot arrange our case because of the darkness. ²⁰ Should it be recounted to Him that I would speak? Would a man ask that he be swallowed down?

⁵ Many are Your marvelous works which You have done, O Yahweh my Elohim, And Your designs for us. There is no one arranging them for You! Should I tell and should I speak of them, They are more plentiful than could be numbered."

⁴ You held open the guardians of my eyes; I was agitated, and I could not speak."

³ Heavy is stone, and weighty is sand, Yet vexation from a fool is heavier than them both."

²⁸ Hither to Me, all who are toiling and laden, and I will be giving you rest."

²³ I shall cause evils to sweep up over them; I shall exhaust My arrows among them ²⁴ who are gaunt with famine, fought by pestilence and bitter sting:Even the tooth of beasts shall I send among them along with the venom of skulkers of the soil.

⁴² I shall make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh, the blood of the one mortally wounded and the captive, from the head of the enemy commanders.

¹⁷ He Who is hurting me And Who has multiplied my injuries gratuitously,

¹² I was at ease, and He quashed me; He held me by the nape of my neck, And He shattered me; He set me up as His target. ¹³ His multitudes surround me; He splits open my innermost being and does not spare; He pours out my bile on the earth. ¹⁴ He breaches upon me, breach adjoining breach; He runs upon me like a master of war.

²⁰ May his own eyes see his downfall, And may he drink of the fury of Him Who Suffices.

¹⁵ Decadent things have turned against me; My patronage status is pursued as by the wind, And my salvation has passed away like a thick cloud.

²³ (Indeed I have an awe of calamity from El, And I am not able to stand before His dignity..

¹³ So He has prepared for him the instruments of death; He makes His arrows flaring ones.

¹⁴ He sent off His arrows, with which He scattered them, And He multiplied bolts of lightning, with which He discomfited them."

¹² For You shall make them turn their backs; With Your bowcords You shall be ready against their faces.

² For Your arrows have settled deep in me, And Your hand is settling down on me."

⁵ Your arrows being whetted, Peoples shall fall beneath You, Struck in the heart of the King's enemies."

¹⁵ From my youth have I been humbled and wearied unto death; I have borne the dread of You; I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your hot anger has passed upon me; Your frightenings have effaced me.

⁷ Quickly answer me, O Yahweh; my spirit is exhausted; O do not conceal Your face from me, Or I would become comparable with descenders to the crypt."

¹⁴ A man's spirit sustains him in his illness, Yet a despondent spirit, who can bear it?

¹² He positions His bow and is setting me as a target for the arrow; ¹³ He pierces my innermost being with the sons of His quiver.

³³ And He is taking Peter and James and John aside with Himself, and He begins to be overawed and depressed." ³⁴ And He is saying to them, "Sorrow-stricken is My soul to death. Remain here and watch."

³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus implores with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi! Eloi! Lema sabachthani?which is, being construed, "My God! My God! Why didst Thou forsake Me?

¹¹ Being aware, then, of the fear of the Lord, we are persuading men, yet we are manifest to God. Now I am expecting to be manifest in your consciences also."

¹ {SCROLL TWO{ {Contemplating, For the Sons of Korah{ As a deer is panting over the channels of water, So is my soul panting for You, O Elohim!"

¹⁴ You are the One making grass sprout for the beasts And herbage for the service of humanity, To bring forth bread from the earth"

⁶ And wild asses have stood on high places, They have swallowed up wind like dragons, Consumed have been their eyes, for there is no herb."

¹⁸ How the beast sighs! The droves of oxen are doleful, for there is no pasture for them. Even the droves of small cattle are exterminated." ¹⁹ To You, Yahweh, am I calling, for fire devours the oases of the wilderness, and a blaze sets aflame all the trees of the field." ²⁰ Even the beasts of the field are sniffing for You, for the channels of water are dry, and fire devours the oases of the wilderness."

¹³ All of your approach presents shall you salt with salt; and you shall not cause the salt of the covenant of your Elohim to cease on your approach present. On all of your approach presents shall you bring salt near to Yahweh your Elohim.

²⁵ How savory are words of uprightness, Yet how can correction from you be correcting?

³⁰ Is there iniquity on my tongue? Or does not my palate understand woes?

¹¹ Does not the ear test declarations As the palate tastes its food?

² I have heard many things like these; Miserable comforters are you all.

³ For the ear tests declarations As the palate tastes food.

¹⁰³ How savory are Your promises to my palate, Better than honey to my mouth!"

³⁴ Ideal, then, is salt. Yet if even the salt should be made insipid, with what shall it be seasoned?

⁶ your word being always with grace, seasoned with salt, perceiving how you must answer each one."

⁴ For it is impossible for those once enlightened, besides tasting the celestial gratuity and becoming partakers of holy spirit, ⁵ and tasting the ideal declaration of God, besides the powerful deeds of the impending eon,

¹² And she said, `Yahweh your Elohim lives, I have not a cake, but the fulness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and lo, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it--and died..

²⁷ and you have said, Thus said the king, Place you this one in the house of restraint, and cause him to eat bread of oppression, and water of oppression, till my coming in peace..

²⁴ For like my bread comes my sighing, And my roarings pour forth like water.

⁹ For I eat ashes like bread, And I blend my drink with lamentation,

¹⁴ And I say, `Ah, Lord Yahweh, lo, my soul is not defiled, and carcase, and torn thing, I have not eaten from my youth, even till now; nor come into my mouth has abominable flesh.'"

¹⁶ And He said unto me, `Son of man, lo, I am breaking the staff of bread in Jerusalem, and they have eaten bread by weight and with fear; and water by measure and with astonishment, they do drink;"

¹⁸ `Son of man, your bread in haste you do eat, and your water with trembling and with fear you do drink;" ¹⁹ and you have said unto the people of the land, Thus said the Lord Yahweh concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem, concerning the land of Israel:Their bread with fear they do eat, and their water with astonishment drink, because its land is desolate, because of its fulness, because of the violence of all who are dwelling in it."

³ Bread of coveted qualities I do not eat, flesh and wine did not come into my mouth, with oil did I not rub myself till fulfilled are the three periods of seven days."

¹¹ What is my vigor that I should wait? And what is my end that I should prolong my soul? ¹² Is my vigor the vigor of stones, Or my flesh like copper? ¹³ Isn't it that there is nothing in me to help myself, And all prosperity has been expelled from me?

¹⁴ I will call out to the grave, My father are you, To the worm, My mother and my sister. ¹⁵ Where indeed is my expectation? And my good hope, who shall regard it? ¹⁶ Shall they descend by my side to the unseen, Or will our rest be together in the soil?

⁸¹ My soul is exhausted looking for Your salvation; I have set my hope in Your word.

¹⁴ I am not able, by myself alone, to bear all this people, for it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ So if thus You are doing to me, kill me, I pray, yea kill me. If I have found grace in Your eyes then do not let me see Your evil.

⁴ and he himself has gone into the wilderness a day's Journey, and comes and sits under a certain retem-tree, and desires his soul to die, and said, `Enough, now, O Yahweh, take my soul, for I [am] not better than my fathers..

²⁰ Why is He giving light to the miserable, And life to the bitter of sou. ²¹ (Who tarry for death, yet it is not coming, And they delve for it more than for buried treasures, ²² Who rejoice unto exultation, And they are elated when they find the tomb),

¹⁵ So my soul would choose strangling; Death is desired by my bones. ¹⁶ I reject this; I would not live for the eon; Leave off from me, for my days are vanity.

¹³ O that You would seclude me in the unseen, That You would conceal me until Your anger turns back, That You would set a statutory time for me and then remember me.

²¹ Be gracious to me! be gracious to me, you, my associates! For the hand of Eloah has touched me.

⁴ For by day and night, Your hand was heavy upon me; My freshness was turned into the droughts of summer. {Interlude{ "

¹⁰ Behold! I refined you, yet not as silver; I tested you in the crucible of humiliation." ¹¹ On My account, on My account am I doing it. For how is My name being violated! Yet My glory I will not give to another!" ¹² Hearken to Me, Jacob, My servant, and Israel, My called. I am He! I am the First! Indeed, I am the Last!" ¹³ Indeed, My hand founded the earth, and My right handbreadth measured the heavens. I am calling to them, and they are standing together."

³ And now, Yahweh, take, I pray, my soul from me, for better is my death than my life."

⁸ And it is coming as the sun rises, that Elohim is assigning a hot east wind, and the sun is smiting on the head of Jonah, and he is swooning. And he is asking for his soul to die and is saying, Better is my death than my life."

⁶ And in those days men will be seeking death, and under no circumstances shall they be finding it. And they will be yearning to die, and death is fleeing from them."

² Speak to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them:Holy shall you become, for I am holy, Yahweh your Elohim.

²⁰ Yahweh shall not be willing to pardon him, because then Yahweh's anger and His jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the imprecation that is written in this scroll will lie on him. Yahweh will wipe out his name from under the heavens;"

² There is none holy like Yahweh, For there is none save You, And there is no rock like our Elohim.

²² Who rejoice unto exultation, And they are elated when they find the tomb),

⁴ He is wise in heart and resolute in vigor; Who has stiffened himself against Him and fared well?

³³ The clods of the watercourse are sweet to him; All humanity draws out after him, And there is no numbering of those before him.

²² Take hold, I pray, to the law from His mouth, And place His sayings in your heart.

¹² From the instruction of His lips I do not remove myself; I have secluded in my bosom the sayings of His mouth.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous one, it soliloquizes wisdom, And his tongue, it speaks right judgment."

⁹ I bear tidings of righteousness in the vast assembly; Behold, I shall not close off my lips; O Yahweh, You know." ¹⁰ Your righteousness I have not covered in the midst of my heart; Your faithfulness and Your salvation I have affirmed; I have not suppressed Your benignity and Your truth in the vast assembly.

¹⁷ O Elohim, You have taught me from my youth, And hitherto am I telling of Your marvelous works." ¹⁸ Even when I am old and greyhaired, O Elohim, do not forsake me, Until I should tell of Your arm of power to the next generation, Of Your masterful deeds to all who shall come."

¹³ With my lips I recount All the ordinances from Your mouth.

¹¹ Withdraw from the way, turn aside from the path. Eradicate from our face the Holy One of Israel." ¹² Wherefore, thus says Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel:"Because you reject this word, and are trusting in extortion and are devious, and are leaning on it,

¹⁵ For thus says Yahweh, high and lifted up, who tabernacles the future, and holy is His name:"In the high and holy place am I tabernacling, and with the crushed and lowly spirit, to preserve alive the spirit of the lowly, and to preserve alive the heart of the crushed."

⁹ I will not execute the heat of My anger; I will not return to ruin Ephraim, for the El am I, and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not enter into the city."

¹² Are You not from aforetime, Yahweh? My Eloah, my Holy One, You shalt not die. Yahweh, for judgment do You place him, and, O Rock, for correction, You do found him."

³ Eloah is coming from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. INTERLUDE His splendor covers the heavens, and His praise fills the earth."

²⁰ how under no circumstances did I shrink from informing you of anything which was expedient, and teaching you in public and at your homes,

²⁷ for under no circumstances do I shrink from informing you of the entire counsel of God.

³² Surely, He Who spares not His own Son, but gives Him up for us all, how shall He not, together with Him, also, be graciously granting us all?

⁴ For if God spares not sinning messengers, but thrusting them into the gloomy caverns of Tartarus, gives them up to be kept for chastening judging;" ⁵ and spares not the ancient world, but guards Noah, an eighth, a herald of righteousness, bringing a deluge on the world of the irreverent;"

⁷ And to the messenger of the ecclesia in Philadelphia write: "Now this is saying the True, the Holy One, Who has the key of David, and Who is opening and no one shall be locking, and locking and no one shall be opening:"

⁸ And the four animals, each one of them having six wings apiece, around and inside are replete with eyes. And they have no rest day and night, saying, "Holy! holy! holy! Lord God Almighty, Who wast and Who art and Who art coming!"

⁵ My flesh is clothed with maggot and dirty scab; My skin is split apart and is fetid. ⁶ My days are fleeter than a weaver's shuttle, And they shall conclude with the limit of the weaving thread. ⁷ Remember that my life is a wind; My eye shall not turn back again to see good.

²⁰ Are not the days of my transient lifetime few? Set away from me that I may smile a little,

²⁵ Would You terrify a leaf being whisked away? And would You pursue dry straw?

²⁸ A man, he, like a rotten thing, he is disintegrating, Like a cloak when a moth has eaten it.

¹ My spirit is devitalized; My days are extinct; The tombs are ready for me.

⁴ As for me, is my concern directed to a human? And if so, for what reason should my spirit not be impatient?

⁵ Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my transient lifetime is as nothing in front of You. Yea, all of humanity, standing up, is altogether a transitory breath. {Interlude{ "

⁵ You storm them away to sleep; They become like the grass in the morning that passes by; ⁶ In the morning it blossoms, but it passes by; By evening it is snipped off and has dried up." ⁷ For we are consumed by Your anger, And by Your fury are we filled with panic." ⁸ You have set our depravities in front of You, Our obscured deeds in the full light of Your face." ⁹ Indeed all our days turn around before Your rage; We finish our years like a mumble. ¹⁰ The days of our years, in them are seventy years, And if by mastery there are eighty years, Yet even in their heyday is toil and sorrow, For it is sheared off hurriedly, and we fly away."

²³ On the way He has humbled my vigor; He has shortened my days.

¹⁴ For He knows our formation, Remembering that we are soil." ¹⁵ As for mortal man, his days are like grass, Like a blossom of the field, so is he blossoming." ¹⁶ For the wind, it passes over him, and he is no more, And his place shall not recognize him any longer."

¹⁸ His bones are tubings of copper, His ribs like bars of iron.

²⁴ His heart is solidly set like stone, Even solidly set like the nether grindstone.

² Truly, you are the people, And with you wisdom shall die!" ³ However, I have heart understanding as well as you; I am not falling behind you; For who is there not knowing such things as these?

² Where you have knowledge, so also do I know; I am not falling behind you.

²⁸ If you are saying, How may we pursue him? And:The root of the matter is found in him,

² How you have helped one without vigor And saved an arm without strength!

¹² For our boasting is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom, but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, yet more superabundantly toward you."

⁴ Now let each one be testing his own work, and then he shall be having his boast for himself alone, and not for another,

¹¹ And saying is Abraham, "For I feared seeing that I say, `But no fear of the Elohim is in this place, and they will kill me over the matter of my wife..

³ Behold, you have disciplined many, And you always fortified the slacking hands. ⁴ Your declarations raised the one stumbling, And you made the bowing knees resolute. ⁵ But now it is coming on you, and you tire; It is touching unto you, and you panic.

⁴ Yet you, indeed you quash reverent fear, And you deprecate pious meditation before El.

⁵ I could make you resolute with my mouth, And the condolence of my lips would keep back grief.

¹ {Davidic{ The wicked one has a watchword of transgression within his heart; There is no awe of Elohim in front of his eyes; ² For he apportions too much to himself in his own eyes To find out his depravity and to hate it. ³ The words of his mouth are lawlessness and deceit; He evades even to contemplate doing good.

¹⁷ The close associate keeps friendship at all times, And a brother is born to share distress."

⁴⁰ Yet answering, the other one, rebuking him, averred, "Yet you are not fearing God, seeing that you are in the same judgment!"

¹⁵ so as to be rejoicing with those rejoicing, lamenting with those lamenting."

²⁶ And whether one member is suffering, all the members are sympathizing, or one member is being esteemed, all the members are rejoicing with it."

²⁹ Who is weak and I am not weak? Who is snared and I am not on fire?

² Bear one another's burdens, and thus fill up the law of Christ."

³ Be mindful of those bound, as bound together with them; of those maltreated, as being yourselves also in the body."

¹⁹ All men of my council abhor me, And those I have liked are turned against me.

¹¹ Those loving me and my associates are standing aloof from my contagion, And my near friends stand far off."

⁹ Even the man bidding me peace, in whom I trusted, Who was eating my bread, has magnified his heel against me."

¹² For it is not an enemy who is reproaching me; Then I could bear it; It is not one hating me who magnifies himself against me; Then I could conceal myself from him; ¹³ But it is you, a mortal of my own rank, My mentor and my close acquaintance." ¹⁴ We who together made sweet deliberation, We walked with the foregathering crowd in the House of Elohim."

¹⁸ You have taken far from me loved one and associate; My close acquaintances are darkness to me.

⁴ Each of his friend--beware you, And on any brother, do not trust, For every brother does utterly supplant, For every friend slanderously does walk, ⁵ And each at his friend they mock, And truth they do not speak, They taught their tongue to speak falsehood, To commit iniquity they have labored."

¹⁸ Why has my pain been perpetual? And my wound incurable? It has refused to be healed, You are surely to me as a failing stream, Waters not stedfast."

¹⁴ all loving you have forgotten you, You they do not seek, For with the stroke of an enemy I smote you, The chastisement of a fierce one, Because of the abundance of your iniquity, Mighty have been your sins!"

⁵ You must not believe in an associate. You must not trust in a mentor. From her who is lying in your bosom, keep the portals of your mouth, ⁶ for the son is disgracing the father, the daughter is rising against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her husband's mother. The enemies of a man are all the mortals of his house."

¹⁸ Not concerning all of you am I speaking, for I am aware whom I choose, but that the scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who is masticating bread with Me lifts up his heel against Me.'"

³² Lo! the hour is coming and has come, that you should be scattered, each to his own, and you may be leaving Me alone. And I am not alone, for the Father is with Me."

¹² These are the reefs in your love feasts, carousing with you fearlessly, shepherding themselves; waterless clouds carried aside by winds; trees that are sear, unfruitful, twice dying, uprooted;"

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, `Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, lives, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word..

¹⁹ As aridity and warmth siphon away the snow waters, So the unseen takes those who have sinned.

⁷ And the sons of Cush: Sebah and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabtechah. And the sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

³ And Jokshan generates Sheba, and Thumun and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan come to be Raguel and Nabdeel and Ashurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.

¹⁵ and Chador and Tema and Jetur and Naphish and Kedemah.

¹ And the queen of Sheba is hearing of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of Yahweh, and comes to try him with enigmas,

¹⁰ The kings of Tarshish and the coastlands shall render a tributary present; The kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer levy.

¹⁴ Arrive with water to meet the thirsty, dwellers of the land of Tema. Forestall the wanderer with bread for him."

²³ Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, And all cutting the corners [of the beard],

²² Merchants of Sheba and Raamah--they [are] your merchants, For the chief of all spices, And for every precious stone, and gold, They have given out your remnants." ²³ Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, merchants of Sheba, Asshur--Chilmad--[are] your merchants,

³ And their honorable ones have sent their little ones to the water, They have come unto ditches, They have not found water, They have turned back--their vessels empty! They have been ashamed, And have blushed and covered their head." ⁴ Because the ground has been broken, For there has been no rain in the land, Ashamed have been husbandmen, They have covered their head."

¹³ The hope of Israel [is] Yahweh, All forsaking You are ashamed, And `My apostates' in the earth are written, For they have forsaken Yahweh, A fountain of living waters."

⁵ Now expectation is not mortifying, seeing that the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the holy spirit which is being given to us."

³³ according as it is written: Lo! I am laying in Zion a Stumbling Stone and a Snare Rock, And the one believing on Him shall not be disgraced."

¹¹ Now three associates of Job heard about all this evil coming on him, and they set out, each one from his place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. They appointed a time together to come and condole with him and comfort him. ¹² When they lifted their eyes from afar, they did not recognize him. Then they lifted their voice and lamented, while each one tore his robe, and they sprinkled soil toward the heavens on their heads. ¹³ They sat with him on the earth seven days and seven nights. And there was no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

¹⁵ My brothers, they are treacherous like a watercourse, Like a channel of watercourses that overflow,

⁴ Howbeit, you are smearing with falsehood, Useless healers are all of you.

⁹ Common sons of Adam are only a transitory breath, Noted sons of man a lie; If brought up on the scales, They are less than a transitory breath altogether."

⁷ All the brothers of a destitute man hate him; How much more do his associates keep far from him. He who pursues sayings finds they do not avail.

²² Leave you off from the human, whose breath is in his nostrils! For what account is he?

⁵ Thus said Yahweh:Cursed [is] the man who does trust in man, And has made flesh his arm, And from Yahweh whose heart turns." ⁶ And he has been as a naked thing in a desert, And does not see when good comes, And has inhabited parched places in a wilderness, A salt land, and not inhabited."

⁹ We healed Babylon, and she was not healed, Forsake her, and we go, each to his land, For come unto the heavens has its judgment, And it has been lifted up unto the clouds."

³¹ Then Jesus is saying to them, "All of you shall be snared in Me in this night, for it is written, I shall be smiting the shepherd, And scattered shall be the sheep of the flock."

⁵⁶ Now the whole of this has occurred that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.Then all His disciples, leaving Him, fled."

¹⁶ At my first defense no one came along with me, but all forsook me."

⁹ And the kings of the earth, who commit prostitution and indulge with her, will be lamenting and grieving over her whenever they may be observing the smoke of her conflagration, ¹⁰ standing afar off because of the fear of her torment, saying, 'Woe! Woe! that great city! Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour your judging came.'"

¹⁷ for in one hour was desolated so much riches!' "And every navigator, and every one who is sailing at the place, and mariners and whoever are working on the sea, stand afar off, ¹⁸ and, observing the smoke of her conflagration, they cried, saying, 'Is there any like this great city?'"

³ `Lo, here [am] I; testify against me, over-against Yahweh, and over-against His anointed; whose ox have I taken, and whose ass have I taken, and whom have I oppressed; whom have I bruised, and of whose hand have I taken a ransom, and hide mine eyes with it? --and I restore to you..

¹¹ All his brothers and all his sisters came to him and all his acquaintances from before, and they ate bread with him in his house. Then they condoled with him and comforted him over all the evil that Yahweh had brought upon him. Each of them gave to him one kesitah, and each, one pendant of gold.

³³ I covet no one's silver or gold or vesture."

⁴⁸ after he has sold himself, redemption may he come to have:one of his brothers may redeem him.

⁸ and say to them, `We have acquired our brethren the Jews, those sold to the nations, according to the ability that [is] in us, and you also sell your brethren, and they have been sold to us!' and they are silent, and have not found a word.

²⁰ In famine, He will ransom you from death, And in battle from the hands of the sword.

⁷ Surely it shall not ransom, yea ransom a man; Neither shall one pay to Elohim his sheltering ransom, ⁸ {For the ransom of his soul is too precious a price, And he shuns it for the eon{"

¹⁵ Surely Elohim, He shall ransom my soul from the hand of the unseen, For He shall take hold of me. {Interlude{ "

² Let the redeemed of Yahweh testify so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the foe."

²¹ And I have delivered you from the hand of evil doers, And I have ransomed you From the hand of the terrible!"

²⁷ Behold this, we have investigated it; it is so; Do hear it; and you, get to know it for yourself.

² I shall say to Eloah, O do not condemn me! Let me know for what reason You contend with me!"

¹¹ Behold, I waited for your words; I listened for your understanding While you were sounding out declarations.

¹⁵ They are dismayed; they do not answer further; They shift declarations away from them. ¹⁶ I have waited, but since they are not speaking, Since they stand and do not answer further,

¹ Howbeit now, I pray, O Job, hear my declarations, And do give ear to all my words.

³¹ Attend, Job; hearken to me; Be silent, and I myself shall speak. ³² If there are declarations reply to me; Speak, for I would delight to justify you. ³³ If there is no word from you, hearken to me; Be silent, and I shall train you in wisdom.

³² Until I can perceive, direct me Yourself; If I have contrived iniquity, I shall not do so again?

¹² Who can detect inadvertent errors? From those concealed to me, hold me innocent."

⁸ You said, I shall make you contemplate, And direct you in the way that you should go; I will give counsel with My eye upon you."

¹ {A Davidic Psalm{ I said, I will keep my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will place a muzzle over my mouth, As long as anyone wicked is in front of me." ² I have become mute in stillness; I hushed even from what is good, Yet my pain was troubled more."

⁹ Give reproof to a wise man, and he shall be wiser still; Inform a righteous man, and he shall add to his education."

¹² A pendant of gold and an eardrop of certified gold Is the reproof of a wise man upon a hearkening ear.

¹⁹ Now you are aware, my beloved brethren! Yet let every man be swift to hear, tardy to speak, tardy to anger,

² For we all are tripping much. If anyone is not tripping in word, this one is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also."

⁴ Your declarations raised the one stumbling, And you made the bowing knees resolute.

⁵ O that you would keep silent, yea silent, That would be wisdom for you.

³ Will there be an end to such words of wind? Or what is harassing you that you should answer? ⁴ I myself also could speak like you; O that your soul were in the place of my soul:I would indeed join declarations together against you, And I would indeed wag my head over you. ⁵ I could make you resolute with my mouth, And the condolence of my lips would keep back grief.

³⁴ How then can you comfort me with vanity, When only offense remains in your replies?

²⁵ But if not so, indeed who can prove me a liar Or establish my declaration as nothing?

³ And his anger burned hot against his three associates because they had not found an answer, and so they condemned Elohim.

¹⁸ There is talk that is like stabbings of a sword, Yet the tongue of the wise is healing."

²¹ The one wise of heart shall be called an understanding man, And sweetness of lips shall add to his influence." ²² Intelligence is a fountain of life to its possessors, And folly is the flogging of the foolish." ²³ The heart of a wise man gives his mouth intelligence, And to his lips it adds influence." ²⁴ Pleasant sayings are honey of the comb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones."

²¹ Death and life lie in the hand of the tongue, And they who love to use it must eat its fruit."

¹¹ Apricots of gold in pictures of silver Is a word aptly spoken.

¹⁰ The Assembler sought to find words of delight, And what was written is uprightness and words of truth." ¹¹ The words of the wise are like goad points, And like imbedded bolts for the possessors of gathered sayings They are given by one shepherd."

¹⁰ Yet he said to her, Like the speech of some decadent woman are you speaking. Indeed should we receive good from the One, Elohim, and should we not receive evil? In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

³ May the day perish in which I was born, And the night that said, Behold, a master!" ⁴ That day! may it be darkness; Let not Eloah from above inquire of it, And let not a light beam shine on it. ⁵ May darkness and the blackest shadow sully it; May a cloud tabernacle over it; May rolling fogs of the day frighten it. ⁶ That night! may gloom take hold of it; May it not be one of the days of the year; In the numbering of the months, may it not enter. ⁷ Behold, that night! may it be stark; Let no jubilation enter into it. ⁸ May those cursing the day revile it, Who are equipped to rouse the dragon. ⁹ May the stars of its gloaming be darkened; May it expect light and there be none, And let it not see the eyelids of the dawn. ¹⁰ For it did not close the doors of my mother's belly Or conceal misery from my eyes. ¹¹ Why did I not die from the womb, From the belly come forth and expire? ¹² For what reason did two knees anticipate me, And why were there two breasts that I could suck? ¹³ For now I would lie and be quiet; I would sleep; then there would be rest for me, ¹⁴ With kings and counsellors of the earth, The builders of desert tombs for themselves, ¹⁵ Or with chiefs who had gold, Who were filling their houses with silver. ¹⁶ Why was I not like a buried stillborn child, Like babes who have not seen light? ¹⁷ There the wicked leave off all disturbance, And there those wearied from vigor are resting. ¹⁸ Prisoners are tranquil together; They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster. ¹⁹ Small or great, he is there, And the servant is free from his lords. ²⁰ Why is He giving light to the miserable, And life to the bitter of sou. ²¹ (Who tarry for death, yet it is not coming, And they delve for it more than for buried treasures, ²² Who rejoice unto exultation, And they are elated when they find the tomb), ²³ To a master whose way is concealed When Eloah has screened him about? ²⁴ For like my bread comes my sighing, And my roarings pour forth like water. ²⁵ For when I am afraid of an alarm, it arrives for me, And whatever I shrink from comes to me. ²⁶ I have no ease, and I am not quiet; I have no rest, and disturbance keeps coming.

³ Behold, you have disciplined many, And you always fortified the slacking hands. ⁴ Your declarations raised the one stumbling, And you made the bowing knees resolute.

⁴ For the arrows of Him Who Suffices are in me; Their venom is what my spirit has been drinking; Frightenings from Eloah are arrayed against me.

⁹ That Eloah would be disposed to crush me! May He let loose His hand and clip me off!

² How long shall you declare these things, And the sayings of your mouth be such abundant wind?

¹ My soul is disgusted with my life; I shall give free rein to myself and my concern; Let me speak in the bitterness of my soul.

³ For the ear tests declarations As the palate tastes food. ⁴ Let us choose for ourselves what is due; Let us know between us what is good. ⁵ For Job has said:I am just, Yet El, He has taken away my due;" ⁶ Concerning my due, should I lie? My lesion is mortal, yet I am without transgression. ⁷ What master is like Job? He drinks derision like water; ⁸ He travels in partnership with contrivers of lawlessness And goes about with men of wickedness. ⁹ For he says, It is unprofitable for a master When he strives to be acceptable to Elohim.

² Who is this who darkens counsel By declarations without knowledge?

⁵ I spoke once but shall not answer further, Twice, but I shall not continue.

⁸ Indeed, would you ever quash My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you might be just?

³ Who is this who obscures counsel without knowledge? Wherefore I have professed ideas when I was not understanding, Things too marvelous for me, that I did not know.

⁷ It came to pass after Yahweh had spoken these words to Job that Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite:My anger is hot against you and your two associates because you did not speak concerning Me what is rightly so as My servant Job has done.

¹ Ephraim is grazing on wind and is pursuing the east wind. The entire day he is increasing lying and futility, and they are contracting a covenant with Assyria, and oil is being fetched to Egypt."

³⁷ For by your words shall you be justified, and by your words shall you be convicted."

¹⁴ that we may by no means still be minors, surging hither and thither and being carried about by every wind of teaching, by human caprice, by craftiness with a view to the systematizing of the deception."

²² Any widow or orphan you shall not humiliate. ²³ If you humiliate, yea humiliate him, in case he should cry, yea cry to Me, I shall hear, yea hear his cry, ²⁴ and My anger will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will become widows and your sons orphans.

⁹ Widows you have sent away empty, And the arms of orphans you have crushed.

³ The orphans donkey they lead away; They take the widow's bull as a pledge.

⁹ Yet others snatch the orphan from the breast, And they take as a pledge the unweaned of the humble.

¹² For I made a way of escape for the humble who implored, And the orphan and him who had no helper.

¹⁷ And I have eaten my morsel by myself alone, So that the orphan could not eat of i.

²¹ If I have waved my hand against the orphan Because I saw my backing was in the gate,

¹⁵ He has dug a crypt and delved it deep. Yet he shall fall into the grave he has made.

⁶ They have prepared a net for my footsteps; My soul is bent down; They have dug a pit before me, Yet they have fallen into its midst. {Interlude{ "

³ Redress the poor and the orphan; To the humbled and destitute grant justice.

¹⁰ Do not move away the boundary marker of the widow, And into the fields of the orphans do not enter, ¹¹ For their Redeemer is steadfast; He Himself shall contend their contention against you.

²⁰ Is evil recompensed instead of good, That they have dug a pit for my soul? Remember my standing before You to speak good of them, To turn back Your wrath from them."

²² A cry is heard from their houses, For You bring against them suddenly a troop, For they dug a pit to capture me, And snares they have hidden for my feet."

⁷ Father and mother made light of in you, To a sojourner they dealt oppressively in your midst, Fatherless and widow they oppressed in you."

³ and they handle the lot for My people. They are giving the boy for prostitution, and the girl they sell for wine, and they are drinking it."

¹⁰ Moreover, she was for deportation; she goes into captivity. Moreover, her unweaned children are being dashed to pieces at the head of all the streets, and over all her glorious ones, they handle the lot. And all her great ones are chained with manacles."

⁵ Then I will come near to you for judgment, and become a hastening witness against the enchanters and against the adulterers, and against those who are swearing in My name to falsehood, and against those extorting the hire of the hireling, and those tyrannizing over the widow and taunting the orphan, and turning aside the sojourner, and do not fear Me, says Yahweh of hosts."

²⁷ for ritual clean and undefiled with God the Father is this: to be visiting the bereaved and widowed in their affliction, to be keeping oneself unspotted from the world."

³ and in greed, with suave words, they will traffic in you, whose judgment of old is not idling, and their destruction is not nodding."

³ Shall your inventions turn men to silence? And shall you keep deriding while there is no one criticizing?

⁴ My lips shall assuredly not speak iniquity, And my tongue, it shall assuredly not soliloquize deceit.

³ My arguments reflect the uprightness of my heart, And my lips declare knowledge in purity.

⁴ For truly my declarations are not false; One flawless in knowledge is with you.

¹⁰ Howbeit, all of you, come forward again, I pray; Though I shall not find a wise man among you.

¹⁰ But He knows the way with me; He tests me, and I shall go forth like gold.

⁴ My lips shall assuredly not speak iniquity, And my tongue, it shall assuredly not soliloquize deceit. ⁵ Far be it from me should I ever justify you; Until I expire, I shall not put away my integrity from me. ⁶ I will hold fast to my righteousness, and I shall not relax; My heart shall never reproach me throughout my days.

⁵ For Job has said:I am just, Yet El, He has taken away my due;"

⁶ Therefore I sink down and repent On soil and ashes.

¹⁸ And you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between a servant of Elohim and him who does not serve Him."

⁶ Is insipid food being eaten without salt? Or is there taste in the ooze of purslane?

⁸ Yea, you have spoken in my ears, And I have heard the sound of these declarations. ⁹ I am pure, without transgression; I am unstained, and no depravity is in me;" ¹⁰ Behold, He finds reasons to repudiate me And reckons me as an enemy to Him;" ¹¹ He places my feet in stocks; He observes all my paths. ¹² Behold, I am answering you:In this you are not justified, For Eloah is greater than a mortal.

³ Who is this who obscures counsel without knowledge? Wherefore I have professed ideas when I was not understanding, Things too marvelous for me, that I did not know. ⁴ Hearken now, and I myself shall speak; I shall ask of you, and you inform Me. ⁵ With the hearing of the ear I had heard of You, But now my eye sees You. ⁶ Therefore I sink down and repent On soil and ashes.

¹⁴ Now solid nourishment is for the mature, who, because of habit, have faculties exercised for discriminating between the ideal and the evil."
