⁷ `And now, apportion this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh,' -.

⁵³ To these the land shall be apportioned by allotment by the number of names. ⁵⁴ For the numerous one you shall increase his allotment, and for the little one you shall decrease his allotment. Each corresponding to their mustered ones shall be given his allotment. ⁵⁵ Only, by lot shall the land be apportioned. By the names of their fathers' stocks shall they be allotted. ⁵⁶ At the bidding of the lot you shall apportion each his allotment, between the numerous one and the little one.

² So the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest and to the princes of the congregation, saying. ³ Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo and Beon, ⁴ the land which Yahweh smote before the congregation of Israel, it is cattle land, and your servants have cattle. ⁵ They also said:If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants for a holding; do not make us cross over the Jordan. ⁶ Then Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben:Your brothers, shall they come to the war while you dwell here? ⁷ Why do you discourage the heart of the sons of Israel from crossing over to the land which Yahweh has given to them? ⁸ Thus your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. ⁹ They went up to the watercourse of Eshcol and saw the land, yet they discouraged the heart of the sons of Israel so as not to enter the land which Yahweh has given to them. ¹⁰ The anger of Yahweh grew hot on that day, and He swore, saying. ¹¹ Assuredly no one of the men coming up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward shall see the ground about which I had sworn to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob! For they have not fully followed after M. ¹² save Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they fully followed after Yahweh. ¹³ The anger of Yahweh grew hot against Israel, and He caused them to rove about in the wilderness forty years until the whole generation doing evil in the eyes of Yahweh came to end. ¹⁴ And behold, you have risen in your fathers' stead as a vast brood of sinful men to be swept up again on account of the heat of Yahweh's anger toward Israel!"

⁵⁴ And you will entail the land by lot, by your families. For the numerous one you shall increase his allotment, and for the little one you shall decrease his allotment. Whenever the lot comes forth for him it shall be his. By the stocks of your fathers shall you entail among yourselves.

¹³ `Thus said the Lord Yahweh:This [is] the border whereby you inherit the land, according to the twelve tribes of Israel; Joseph [has] portions." <sup>14</sup> And you have inherited it, one as well as another, in that I have lifted up My hand to give it to your fathers; and this land has fallen to you in inheritance." <sup>15</sup> `And this [is] the border of the land at the north quarter; from the great sea, the way of Hethlon, at the coming in to Zedad:" ¹⁶ Hamath, Berothah, Sibraim, that [is] between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath; Hazar-Hatticon, that [is] at the coast of Havran." ¹⁷ And the border from the sea has been Hazar-Enan, the border of Damascus, and Zaphon at the north, and the border of Hamath:and [this is] the north quarter." ¹⁸ `And the east quarter [is] from between Havran, and Damascus, and Gilead, and the land of Israel, [to] the Jordan; from the border over-against the eastern sea you measure:and [this is] the east quarter." <sup>19</sup> `And the south quarter southward [is] from Tamar unto the waters of Meriboth-Kadesh, the stream unto the great sea:and [this is] the south quarter southward." ²⁰ `And the west quarter [is] the great sea, from the border till over-against the coming in to Hamath:this [is] the west quarter." <sup>21</sup> `And you have divided this land to you, according to the tribes of Israel;" ²² and it has come to pass, you separate it for an inheritance to yourselves, and to the sojourners who are sojourning in your midst, who have begotten sons in your midst, and they have been to you as native, with the sons of Israel, with you they are separated for an inheritance in the midst of the tribes of Israel." ²³ And it has come to pass, in the tribe with which the sojourner sojourns, there you give his inheritance--an affirmation of the Lord Yahweh."

²³ `As to the rest of the tribes, from the east side unto the west side, Benjamin one, ²⁴ and by the border of Benjamin, from the east side unto the west side, Simeon one, ²⁵ and by the border of Simeon, from the east side unto the west side, Issachar one, ²⁶ and by the border of Issachar, from the east side unto the west side, Zebulun one, ²⁷ and by the border of Zebulun, from the east side unto the west side, Gad one, ²⁸ and by the border of Gad, at the south side southward, the border has been from Tamar [to] the waters of Meriboth-Kadesh, the stream by the great sea." ²⁹ This [is] the land that you separate by inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these [are] their portions--an affirmation of the Lord Yahweh."
