For you will be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ Undoubtedly there are many languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning. ¹¹ If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the one who is speaking, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me. ¹² So it is with you; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in building up the church. ¹³ Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. ¹⁴ For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. ¹⁵ What am I to do? As in all the churches of the saints, ³⁴ the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as even the law says. ³⁵ If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. ³⁶ Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? ³⁷ If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. ³⁸ But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. ³⁹ Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. ⁴⁰ But all things should be done decently and in an orderly way.

³⁰ What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith;

⁶ Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;

¹⁹ Let us therefore pursue what makes for peace and for mutual edification.

¹ Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be uninformed.

³¹ But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

¹³ So now faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

³ But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their edification and encouragement and comfort. ⁴ He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. ⁵ Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. ³⁷ If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command.

³⁹ Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

¹⁴ Let all that you do be done in love.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

²⁰ do not despise prophecies.

¹⁴ Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you through prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands on you.

¹⁰ and she must be well known for her good deeds, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, relieved those in distress, and devoted herself to doing good in every way.

¹¹ But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

²² Now flee from youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

¹⁴ Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

¹¹ He must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. ¹² For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." ¹³ Who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

⁷ and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, love.

¹¹ Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

¹¹ And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

¹¹ And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those outside everything is in parables;

¹⁷ And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ⁵ Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. ⁶ And at this sound the crowd came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. ⁷ They were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear them, each of us in his own native language? ⁹ Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ¹¹ Cretans and Arabswe hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."

⁴⁶ For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,

⁶ And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

⁹ And those who were with me saw the light, but did not hear the voice of the one who was speaking to me.

²⁵ Now to him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages

⁷ But we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and which God destined for our glory before the ages.

¹⁰ God has revealed them to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

² If I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

⁵¹ Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

³ that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. ⁴ When you read this, you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, ⁵ which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; ⁶ that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs and members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. ⁷ Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace which was given me by the working of his power. ⁸ To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, ⁹ and to make plain to everyone the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things;

¹⁹ and also pray for me, that in the opening of my mouth, utterance may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,

²⁶ the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. ²⁷ To them God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

² that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love, to have all the riches of assured understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ himself,

⁹ they must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.

¹⁶ By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: he was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

⁷ but in the days of the trumpet of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God will be finished, as he announced to his servants the prophets.

¹⁸ And with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people.

³¹ So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace and was built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.

¹⁵ After the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it."

²² strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God."

³² And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged the brethren with many words and strengthened them.

⁸ he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

² Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

¹ Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that we all possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

²³ "All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.

⁷ so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

¹² to equip the saints for the work of service, for the building up of the body of Christ; ¹³ until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to become mature, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. ¹⁴ As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. ¹⁵ But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into him, who is the head, into Christ, ¹⁶ from whom the whole body, being joined and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each part, causes the growth of the body and builds itself up in love.

²⁹ Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building others up according to the need of the moment, that it may impart grace to those who hear.

²² I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.

⁸ I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts;

³ For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity, nor is it made with deceit;

¹¹ for you know how, as a father with his own children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you

² and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,

¹ Finally, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more.

¹⁸ Therefore comfort one another with these words.

¹¹ Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. ¹² But we ask you, brethren, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, ¹³ and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. ¹⁴ And we urge you, brethren, admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

¹² Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and earn their own bread to eat.

⁴ nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than the divine trainingwhich is by faith.

¹³ Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.

² Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but they must serve them all the better, because those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties.

² preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and exhort, with great patience and instruction.

⁹ he must hold firm to the sure word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to refute those who contradict it.

⁶ Likewise urge the young men to be sensible.

⁹ Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not to talk back to them,

¹⁵ Speak these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

¹³ But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

²⁵ not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the Day drawing near.

²² I urge you, brethren, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly.

¹² With the help of Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.

¹ If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

¹⁷ I urge you, brethren, to take note of those who cause divisions and difficulties, contrary to the doctrine which you have learned; avoid them.

³³ just as I try to please all men in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸ To one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

² If I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ³ If I give all I have to the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

⁸ Love never fails; but where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. ⁹ For we know in part and we prophesy in part;

⁶ But even if I am unskilled in speech, I am not in knowledge; in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.

¹ I must go on boasting, though there is nothing to be gained by it; but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.

⁷ And to keep me from being too elated because of the abundance of revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated.

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.

⁴ When you read this, you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,

¹⁵ Let those of us who are mature have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you.

¹⁴ Remind them of these things, and charge them in the presence of God to avoid disputing about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.

¹⁰ You, however, know all about my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,

¹⁶ All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness;

⁸ This is a trustworthy saying; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to devote themselves to good deeds. These things are excellent and profitable for men.

⁹ Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.

⁵ For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge,

¹⁸ But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

⁹ Anyone who runs ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God; he who abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

¹⁷ 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'

³² They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another: 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.'

¹¹ Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. ¹² For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. ¹³ Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. ¹⁴ Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, ¹⁵ and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; ¹⁶ in addition to all this, taking up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. ¹⁸ Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and petition. And with this in view, keep alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

²⁶ Therefore I do not run aimlessly. I do not box as a man beating the air.

² The natives showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold.

⁴ When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live."

¹⁴ I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish:

²¹ In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord."

¹¹ Here there is no Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free, but Christ is all, and in all.

⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

³¹ But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

¹⁴ who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, zealous for good deeds.

²⁴ Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

¹³ And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴ If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.

¹⁴ All these with one mind devoted themselves to prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

²⁹ And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, ³⁰ while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of your holy servant Jesus." ³¹ And when they had prayed, the place where they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.

¹⁵ who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

³⁰ Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

² For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands him, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

¹⁵ What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. ¹⁶ Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how can any one in the position of an outsider say the "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?

¹⁹ but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

²³ But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. ²⁴ God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

⁹ For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers,

⁵ But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)

³¹ What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

¹ I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. ² Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

¹⁹ What do I mean then? That a thing offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

¹⁷ Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. ¹⁸ And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, ¹⁹ speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord, ²⁰ always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹⁸ Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and petition. And with this in view, keep alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

¹⁸ What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'

²⁰ teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

²⁰ Then they went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word by the signs that accompanied it. Amen.

¹⁵ And the Jews marveled, saying, "How did this man get such learning, having never studied?"

²⁵ But there are also many other things which Jesus did. If every one of them were to be written, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

¹³ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

⁴ I thank my God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, ⁵ that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge ⁶ even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, ⁷ so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you eagerly wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ; ⁸ who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."

¹⁴ For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

²³ Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? ²⁴ But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;

²⁴ My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

¹⁴ And the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshipped.

¹² saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen."

²⁰ He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

⁴ He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

⁶ But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

⁴ I thank my God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, ⁵ that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge ⁶ even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you,

⁷ For who regards you as different? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

²¹ In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord." ²² Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; but prophecy is for believers, not for unbelievers.

³ and he said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

⁴ And he answered them, "Have you not read that he who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,'

¹⁵ Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it."

¹⁹ For your obedience has become known to all, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.

⁶ Yet we do speak a wisdom among the mature, a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away.

¹ But I, brethren, could not address you as spiritual men, but as carnal men, as infants in Christ. ² I gave you milk, not solid food; for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, even now you are not ready,

¹¹ When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

¹⁴ As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. ¹⁵ But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into him, who is the head, into Christ,

⁹ And this is my prayer, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment,

¹² For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of God's word. You need milk, not solid food; ¹³ for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.

¹ Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, ² with instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. ³ And this we will do, if God permits.

² Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

³⁴ Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, you are gods'?

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

⁶ And at this sound the crowd came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. ⁷ They were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear them, each of us in his own native language? ⁹ Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ¹¹ Cretans and Arabswe hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God." ¹² And they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"

³² This Jesus God raised up again, and of that we are all witnesses. ³³ Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear. ³⁴ For David did not ascend into heaven, but he says himself: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, ³⁵ until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' ³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."

⁹ realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers

²⁰ Many of them said, "He has a demon, and is mad. Why listen to him?"

¹³ But others were mocking and said, "They are full of sweet wine."

²⁴ And as he was saying this in his defense, Festus said in a loud voice, "Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great learning is driving you mad."

¹⁸ For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" ⁴⁸ Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

²⁹ "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

³⁷ Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"

¹⁵ But the spiritual man judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

¹² For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ¹³ And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

⁸ When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me!"

¹⁶ and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.

⁸ And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

⁴ And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who is seated on the throne, saying, "Amen. Hallelujah!"

⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸ To one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, ⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, ¹⁰ and to another the working of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another distinguishing between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

⁴ He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. ⁵ Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified. ⁶ But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

²⁷ If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn; and one must interpret.

⁴⁰ But all things should be done decently and in an orderly way.

¹⁹ Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves before you? It is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and all for your upbuilding, beloved.

¹⁰ I write these things while I am absent, in order that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority which the Lord gave me for building you up, and not for tearing you down.

¹² to equip the saints for the work of service, for the building up of the body of Christ;

¹⁶ from whom the whole body, being joined and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each part, causes the growth of the body and builds itself up in love.

¹⁹ speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord,

¹¹ Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

¹⁹ Do not quench the Spirit; ²⁰ do not despise prophecies. ²¹ But test everything; hold fast to what is good.

¹ Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. ² By this you know the Spirit of God: every Spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, ³ and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of the Antichrist, of which you have heard that it was coming, and now it is in the world already.

¹⁹ Do not quench the Spirit; ²⁰ do not despise prophecies.

¹² that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.

³⁵ If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

⁶ But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, ⁷ and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more.

¹¹ And he gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, ¹² to equip the saints for the work of service, for the building up of the body of Christ;

¹⁴ And we urge you, brethren, admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

¹⁹ But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; ²⁰ for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

¹ Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

¹⁴ "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"

¹³ But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints at Jerusalem;

³³ The God of peace be with you all. Amen.

¹⁷ For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church.

¹⁵ But if the unbelieving partner leaves, let him do so; in such a case the brother or sister is not bound. For God has called us to peace.

¹⁷ Only, let each one lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him, and in which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.

¹⁶ If anyone wants to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

¹⁶ Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

²⁰ Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant,

¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or hypocrisy. ¹⁸ And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

³ But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.

⁵ But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her headit is the same as if her head were shaved.

⁷ For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. ⁸ For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; ⁹ neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. ¹⁰ Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

²² Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. ²³ For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is himself the Savior. ²⁴ As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject to their husbands in everything.

³³ However, each one of you must also love his wife as himself, and the wife must see that she respects her husband.

¹⁸ Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

¹¹ Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. ¹² I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.

⁵ to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

¹ You wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, ² when they see your chaste and respectful behavior. ³ Your adornment must not be merely outwardbraiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on fine clothing; ⁴ but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God's sight. ⁵ For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, and were submissive to their own husbands; ⁶ just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children if you do what is right and are not frightened by any fear.

⁶ For if a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, let her cover her head.

¹⁴ Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him,

³⁴ the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as even the law says.

¹² For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret.

²⁵ Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, ²⁶ that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, ²⁷ that he might present the church to himself in all her glory, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and blameless.

⁷ Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with honor as the weaker partner, since you are joint heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

¹ Now in the church that was at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. ² While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." ³ Then after they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

³⁵ But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also. ³⁶ After some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us return and visit the brethren in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are."

⁹ A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing and begging him, and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." ¹⁰ When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

¹ Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

¹⁰ The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue. ¹¹ Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

¹⁵ Now those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they left.

¹ After this he left Athens and went to Corinth. ² And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He went to see them, ³ and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them, and they worked, for by trade they were tentmakers. ⁴ And every Sabbath he was reasoning in the synagogue, and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. ⁵ When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. ⁶ But when they opposed him and blasphemed, he shook out his garments and said to them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles." ⁷ Then he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. ⁸ Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were baptized. ⁹ And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, "Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent; ¹⁰ for I am with you, and no man will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city." ¹¹ And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. ¹² But while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack upon Paul and brought him before the judgment seat, ¹³ saying, "This man is persuading men to worship God contrary to the law." ¹⁴ But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of wrong or of vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you; ¹⁵ but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves; I refuse to be a judge of these things." ¹⁶ And he drove them from the judgment seat. ¹⁷ And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the judgment seat. But Gallio paid no attention to this.

¹³ But we will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the field God has apportioned to us, a field that reaches even to you. ¹⁴ For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you; we were the first to come even as far as you with the gospel of Christ. ¹⁵ We do not go beyond limits by boasting in other men's labors, but our hope is that as your faith grows, our sphere among you may be greatly enlarged, ¹⁶ so that we can preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. For we do not want to boast of work already done in another man's territory.

⁸ For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we have no need to say anything.

¹⁶ "He who hears you hears me, he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me."

³ For by the grace given to me I say to every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him.

²⁵ Now concerning virgins, I have no command of the Lord, but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy.

⁴⁰ But in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is; and I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

² If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.

¹ If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

⁷ You look at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ's, so also are we.

¹² For we do not dare to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by themselves, and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.

⁴ For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the one we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

¹² And what I am doing, I will also continue to do, in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things of which they boast. ¹³ For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will be according to their deeds.

⁸ For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹ Finally, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more. ² For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. ³ For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that is, that you should abstain from sexual immorality; ⁴ that each one of you know how to take his own spouse for himself in holiness and honor, ⁵ not in the passion of lust like the heathen, who do not know God; ⁶ and that no man transgress and wrong his brother in this matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. ⁷ For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness. ⁸ Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

² that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

⁶ We are of God. Whoever knows God listens to us; he who is not of God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

¹⁷ But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;

⁶ Do not give what is holy to the dogs; do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.

¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

³ If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching which accords with godliness, ⁴ he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, which produce envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions, ⁵ and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a means of gain.

³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, ⁴ and will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

¹¹ He who does wrong, let him do wrong still; and he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he who does right, let him do right still; and he who is holy, let him be holy still." ¹² "Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to render to every man according to what he has done.

¹³ Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in quarreling and jealousy.

³⁴ If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come.

²⁶ What is the outcome then, brethren? When you come together, each one has a hymn, or a teaching, or a revelation, or a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. ²⁷ If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn; and one must interpret. ²⁸ But if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God. ²⁹ Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. ³⁰ But if a revelation is made to another who is sitting, the first one must keep silent. ³¹ For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged; ³² and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. ³³ For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

⁵ For even though I am absent in flesh, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

⁵ For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might straighten out what was left unfinished, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you,
