For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? ¹⁸ And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift that is on it, he is bound by his oath.' ¹⁹ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? ²⁰ Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. ²¹ And he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it. ²² And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it. ²³ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law, justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, "How can this be?" ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

⁴⁰ Then some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this, and said to him, "Are we blind also?" ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

¹ But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved."

²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

¹⁹ and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth ²¹ you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

² This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

⁵ Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?

²¹ Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law?

³ I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. ⁴ You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen away from grace.

⁴ he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, which produce envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions,

⁷ always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

¹⁰ For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision. ¹¹ They must be silenced, because they are upsetting whole families by teaching things they ought not to teach for the sake of sordid gain.

¹² But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and killed, reviling in matters of which they are ignorant, will be destroyed in the same destruction with them,
