¹ Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been fulfilled among us, ² just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, ³ it seemed good to me also, having carefully investigated all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, ⁴ so that you may know the certainty of the things which you have been taught. ⁵ In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. ⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. ⁷ But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. ⁸ Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, ⁹ according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. ¹⁰ And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. ¹¹ Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. ¹² And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. ¹³ But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. ¹⁴ And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. ¹⁶ And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." ¹⁸ And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years." ¹⁹ And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. ²⁰ And behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." ²¹ And the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. ²² But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he made signs to them and remained speechless. ²³ And when his time of service was completed, he went to his home. ²⁴ After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, ²⁵ "Thus the Lord has done to me, in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people." ²⁶ In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. ²⁸ The angel went to her and said, "Hail, O highly favored one, the Lord is with you!" ²⁹ But she was greatly troubled at his saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. ³⁰ And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. ³¹ And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. ³³ And he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." ³⁴ And Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" ³⁵ And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. ³⁶ And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. ³⁷ For with God nothing will be impossible." ³⁸ Then Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. ³⁹ In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, ⁴⁰ and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. ⁴¹ And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. ⁴² And she exclaimed with a loud voice, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! ⁴³ But why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? ⁴⁴ For behold, as soon as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. ⁴⁵ And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." ⁴⁶ And Mary said: ⁴⁷ "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, ⁴⁸ for he has regarded the lowly state of his servant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. ⁴⁹ For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. ⁵⁰ And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. ⁵¹ He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. ⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. ⁵⁴ He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, ⁵⁵ as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever." ⁵⁶ And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home. ⁵⁷ Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. ⁵⁸ Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. ⁵⁹ On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father, ⁶⁰ but his mother said, "No; he shall be called John." ⁶¹ They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name." ⁶² And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. ⁶³ And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled. ⁶⁴ And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. ⁶⁵ And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea; ⁶⁶ and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him. ⁶⁷ Now his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: ⁶⁸ "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, ⁶⁹ and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, ⁷⁰ as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, ⁷¹ that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, ⁷² To perform the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, ⁷³ the oath which he swore to our father Abraham: ⁷⁴ to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. ⁷⁶ And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his ways, ⁷⁷ to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, ⁷⁸ through the tender mercy of our God, with which the sunrise from on high will visit us; ⁷⁹ to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." ⁸⁰ And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

³¹ but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

¹ In the first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach, ² until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after he had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. ³ To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: he was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

¹⁷ But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

¹⁶ For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." ¹⁸ We ourselves heard this voice coming from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. ¹⁹ And we have the prophetic word made more sure, and you will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

¹⁴ The sower sows the word.

⁴⁸ You are witnesses of these things.

²⁷ And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

³ To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

⁸ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth."

²¹ Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ²² beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from usone of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection."

²⁰ for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

³⁹ We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; ⁴⁰ but God raised him up on the third day and caused him to be seen, ⁴¹ not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

¹⁶ But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness to the things which you have seen of me, and also to the things in which I will appear to you;

¹⁶ to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

¹ This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

⁷ Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace which was given me by the working of his power. ⁸ To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

¹¹ And he gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, ¹² to equip the saints for the work of service, for the building up of the body of Christ;

²³ if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a minister. ²⁴ Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share for the sake of his body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions. ²⁵ Of this church I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known,

³ how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him,

¹ So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ and a partaker in the glory that is to be revealed,

¹⁶ For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

¹ That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have touched, concerning the Word of life, ² the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us ³ that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

¹⁹ Therefore it is my judgment that we should not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles,

²⁵ it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

²⁸ For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials:

²⁶ "Claudius Lysias, to His Excellency, Governor Felix: greetings.

³ we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all gratitude.

²⁵ But Paul said, "I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking the sober truth.

⁴⁰ But in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is; and I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

¹² As for our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to come to you with the other brethren, but it was not at all his will to come now. He will come when he has opportunity.

²⁵ He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.

¹⁸ and know his will and approve of what is excellent, because you are instructed in the law,

¹⁹ but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

⁶ Let the one who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.

¹⁵ And I will see to it that after my departure you will be able at any time to call these things to mind. ¹⁶ For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

¹ Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,

¹⁵ He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹ And Paul, looking intently at the council, said, "Brethren, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day."

¹⁶ And so I do my best always to have a clear conscience before God and men.

⁹ What then? Are we Jews any better off? Certainly not; for we have already charged that all men, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin. ¹⁰ As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; ¹¹ there is no one who understands, no one who seeks for God. ¹² All have turned aside, together they have become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." ¹³ "Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to practice deceit." "The poison of asps is under their lips." ¹⁴ "Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." ¹⁵ "Their feet are swift to shed blood; ¹⁶ in their ways are ruin and misery, ¹⁷ and the way of peace they do not know." ¹⁸ "There is no fear of God before their eyes." ¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world may be held accountable to God. ²⁰ Therefore no flesh will be justified in his sight by works of the law, for through the law comes knowledge of sin. ²¹ But now the righteousness of God has been revealed apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, ²² the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. For there is no difference, ²³ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, ²⁵ whom God put forward as an atoning sacrifice by his blood, to be received through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over sins committed beforehand;

² I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.

¹² For our boast is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with holiness and godly sincerity, not in worldly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and still more toward you.

¹⁵ so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

⁶ as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. ⁷ But whatever was gain to me, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. ⁸ More than that, I count everything to be loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ ⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christthe righteousness that comes from God and is by faith,

²² yet he has now reconciled you in his fleshly body through death, in order to present you before him holy and blameless and beyond reproach

¹³ so that he may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

¹¹ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, ¹² training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this present age, ¹³ looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, ¹⁴ who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, zealous for good deeds.

³ For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by men and hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but because of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

¹⁴ Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by him in peace, spotless and blameless.

³ Now by this we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does right is born of him.

⁷ Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does right is righteous, just as he is righteous.

¹⁹ And he did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

¹¹ By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, because she considered him faithful who had promised.

⁶ These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tabernacle, performing their ritual duties.

¹⁴ Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

²⁴ For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.

³ Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. And he was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne.

¹⁹ And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.

²⁸ The angel went to her and said, "Hail, O highly favored one, the Lord is with you!"

¹⁰ Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

¹⁹ But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, and brought them out, and said,

³ About the ninth hour of the day he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, "Cornelius!" ⁴ And he stared at him in terror, and said, "What is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to serve for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

³ Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. And he was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. ⁴ And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel's hand.

¹³ Then the sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

⁵ And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were alarmed.

²⁹ But she was greatly troubled at his saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.

⁹ And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. ¹⁰ Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

⁴ And he stared at him in terror, and said, "What is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

¹⁷ And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last,

²¹ And she will give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

²⁷ But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage! It is I; do not be afraid."

⁵ But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

⁶ But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.

³⁰ And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

⁶⁰ but his mother said, "No; he shall be called John." ⁶¹ They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name." ⁶² And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. ⁶³ And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled.

²¹ And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

³⁶ As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." ³⁷ But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your hearts? ³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Handle me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have." ⁴⁰ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

³¹ and he said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.

⁵⁸ Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.

⁹ Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.' ¹¹ Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force. ¹³ For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come. ¹⁵ He who has ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁶ "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, ¹⁷ 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.' ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' ¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her deeds."

²⁸ I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'

³⁵ He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a time in his light.

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

¹⁴ But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. ¹⁵ For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day; ¹⁶ but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ¹⁷ 'And in the last days it shall be, God says, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; ¹⁸ even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy.

¹⁵ But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother's womb and called me through his grace, was pleased

¹⁸ And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,

¹ In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." ³ For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." ⁴ Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan went out to him, ⁶ and confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

⁷⁶ And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his ways,

⁴ Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bear fruit worthy of repentance, ⁹ and do not think to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ¹⁰ Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ¹¹ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹² His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

¹⁴ And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.

⁴ because John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."

¹¹ Jesus replied, "Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. ¹² But I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands."

²⁹ He answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he regretted it and went. ³⁰ Then he went to the second and said the same thing. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but he did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

¹¹ And they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" ¹² Then he said to them, "Elijah does come first and restores all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man, that he must suffer many things and be treated with contempt? ¹³ But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wished, as it is written of him."

¹⁶ And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.

⁷ Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! For I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ⁹ And even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." ¹⁰ And the multitudes asked him, "What then shall we do?" ¹¹ And he answered them, "He who has two tunics, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise." ¹² Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" ¹³ And he said to them, "Collect no more than is appointed you." ¹⁴ Likewise the soldiers asked him, "And what shall we do?" So he said to them, "Rob no one by violence or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages."

¹³ who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

²¹ And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." ²² Then they said to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" ²³ He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." ²⁴ Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. ²⁵ They asked him, "Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" ²⁶ John answered them, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. ²⁷ It is he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." ²⁸ This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.'

³⁴ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."

²⁸ You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but I have been sent before him.

³³ So I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord."

²³ in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory,

⁹ Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

¹² giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

²¹ If anyone cleanses himself from what is ignoble, he will be a vessel for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

⁹ But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

¹¹ Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy lives and godliness, ¹² looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by fire, and the elements will melt with intense heat! ¹³ But according to his promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. ¹⁴ Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by him in peace, spotless and blameless.

²⁸ And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

⁴ Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom judgment was given. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony to Jesus and because of the word of God, and who had not worshipped the beast or his image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life, and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

⁷ But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

³⁴ And Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?"

¹⁰ "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

²⁶ In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

¹⁹ He answered him, "O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me."

¹⁴ Later he appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

²² But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he made signs to them and remained speechless.

⁴⁵ And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."

³ What if some did not have faith? Will their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?

¹³ if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

² in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,

¹⁸ so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.

¹⁹ Those whom I love, I rebuke and chasten. So be zealous and repent.

⁶² And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called.

²⁴ Simon Peter motioned to him and said, "Ask who it is of whom he speaks."

¹⁷ But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, "Tell this to James and to the brethren." Then he left and went to another place.

³³ Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, wishing to make a defense to the people.

⁴⁰ When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned to the people with his hand; and when there was a great hush, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,

¹³ But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

²³ and he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

⁴ And Josnt also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,

⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." ⁴⁶ And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

⁴¹ Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Will the Christ come from Galilee?

¹⁶ and Jacob the father of Josnt the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: when his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.

²⁰ But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. ²¹ And she will give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

²³ "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel," which means, "God with us."

⁴ And Josnt also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, ⁵ to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

⁴⁸ But he replied to the man who told him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"

⁴² And she exclaimed with a loud voice, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

²⁷ As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that nursed you!" ²⁸ But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

¹⁰ for I am with you, and no man will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city."

⁶ to the praise of his glorious grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

⁴⁹ but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out; ⁵⁰ for they all saw him, and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I; do not be afraid."

⁵ And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were alarmed. ⁶ But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.

¹² And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

⁶⁶ and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him.

¹⁹ But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

⁵¹ Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them, but his mother kept all these things in her heart.

¹⁷ Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, appeared at the gate.

³² Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

⁹ And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, "Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent; ¹⁰ for I am with you, and no man will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city."

²⁴ and he said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar; and behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.'

³¹ What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

⁶ So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

²⁵ but did not know her until she had borne a son. And he called his name Jesus.

²⁷ to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

⁴ But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

¹ The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

¹¹ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

⁴² The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

¹⁸ And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

⁷ And crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you by God, do not torment me."

⁶¹ But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

³⁵ And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

¹⁶ John answered them all, "I baptize you with water; but one mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

³⁵ But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For he is kind to the ungrateful and evil.

³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."

²¹ For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom he will. ²² For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. ²⁵ Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, ²⁷ and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. ²⁸ Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear his voice ²⁹ and come forth those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

⁶⁹ And we believe, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."

³⁴ The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever; and how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"

³⁰ And so, because he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,

³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."

⁴⁸ However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

¹⁷ She followed Paul and the rest of us, crying, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way of salvation."

⁴ and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

²⁰ which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, ²¹ far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. ²² And he put all things under his feet and gave him to be the head over all things for the church, ²³ which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

⁹ Therefore God also highly exalted him, and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

² but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the world. ³ He is the radiance of his glory and the exact representation of his being, and upholds all things by the word of his power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, ⁴ having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. ⁵ For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my son, today I have begotten you"? And again, "I will be a father to him and he shall be a son to me"? ⁶ And again, when God brings the first-born into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." ⁷ Of the angels he says, "Who makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire." ⁸ But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.

⁷ "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: 'These are the words of him who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens:

⁶ But it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel,

²⁴ Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all rule and all authority and power. ²⁵ For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

²⁹ And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

¹⁶ Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God.

³ For we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God, and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh,

⁸ But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.

¹⁵ Then the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever."

⁴ Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom judgment was given. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony to Jesus and because of the word of God, and who had not worshipped the beast or his image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life, and reigned with Christ a thousand years. ⁵ The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. ⁶ Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

³ There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will serve him. ⁴ They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. ⁵ And there will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light; and they will reign for ever and ever.

⁶ but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do."

²⁰ But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

³ And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."

³³ Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

⁶³ But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." ⁶⁴ Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. But I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."

⁵⁴ So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified, and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

²⁴ saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you arethe Holy One of God!"

³¹ And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

³⁶ And as they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?"

²⁰ I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

³ Among them we all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and mind, and so we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

²⁶ For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. ²⁷ He does not need, like those high priests, to offer up daily sacrifices, first for his own sins and then for the sins of the people, because he did this once for all when he offered up himself. ²⁸ For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

²⁶ But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

²⁷ Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."

²⁷ But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

²¹ who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

²⁰ He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, ²¹ being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

⁶⁵ And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea;

⁴⁴ For behold, as soon as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.

⁶⁷ Now his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

¹ Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders,

³ Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty.

⁵⁵ But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;

¹⁰ I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,

⁴⁸ for he has regarded the lowly state of his servant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

³⁸ saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

²⁶ Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh also will live in hope, ²⁷ because you will not abandon my soul to hades, nor let your Holy One see decay. ²⁸ You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.'

⁵ Of them are the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, forever blessed. Amen.

² fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁴ But John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

¹¹ For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

⁷ Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

⁴² For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, ⁴³ till I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' ⁴⁴ David therefore calls him 'Lord,' and how is he his son?"

⁵ After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. ⁶ Then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" ⁷ Jesus answered him, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." ⁸ Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with me."

¹³ You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.

²⁸ Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

³ Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

⁸ More than that, I count everything to be loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

²⁰ And behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time."

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?"

²⁹ Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

¹¹ Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received our reconciliation.

³¹ therefore, as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord."

¹⁴ But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumph, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice!

⁸ Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

¹ Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,

³ This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

³ and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior,

¹⁰ and not to steal, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in everything they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

¹³ looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

⁴ But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but because of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,

²⁵ to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

²⁷ As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that nursed you!"

²⁶ For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to fleshly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. ²⁷ But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong, ²⁸ God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are,

⁵ Listen, my beloved brethren: has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him? ⁶ But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court?

¹³ So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered the swine; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and were drowned in the sea.

²⁰ Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,

⁸ And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to sing, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come."

⁴ Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed."

⁵ And a voice came from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, both small and great."

²¹ for although they knew God they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

⁵ We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ,

⁵ Likewise you that are younger men be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

⁸ Therefore in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

⁹ But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; ¹⁰ and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like the flower of the grass he will pass away.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

²⁴ But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

¹⁶ And he told them a parable, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. ¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' ²⁰ But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have prepared?' ²¹ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

¹⁹ "There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and feasted sumptuously every day. ²⁰ And a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ longing to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² So the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. ²³ And in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other menextortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ¹² I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' ¹³ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

²⁴ Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

¹¹ Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. ¹² And when they had eaten their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost." ¹³ So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, left over by those who had eaten.

³⁵ And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.

²⁶ For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to fleshly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.

⁸ You are already filled! You have already become rich! You have become kings without us! And indeed, I wish that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you.

¹ Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out against you; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you.

¹⁷ You say, "I am rich; I have become wealthy, and have need of nothing"and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked, ¹⁸ Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments to clothe you, and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

¹⁶ They will hunger no more, nor thirst anymore; the sun will not beat down on them, nor any scorching heat. ¹⁷ For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

⁷⁰ as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, ⁷¹ that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, ⁷² To perform the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, ⁷³ the oath which he swore to our father Abraham: ⁷⁴ to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.

²⁸ As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. ²⁹ For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.

¹⁶ Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ. ¹⁷ What I mean is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.

⁶ And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. ⁷ And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

¹⁴ And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

²⁵ "Thus the Lord has done to me, in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people."

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

⁸ And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

⁵ circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;

⁶³ And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled.

⁶⁰ but his mother said, "No; he shall be called John."

³³ And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel."

³² Then they brought to him a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged him to put his hand on him. ³³ And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. ³⁴ And looking up to heaven he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." ³⁵ And [immediately] his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. ³⁶ And he commanded them to tell no one; but the more he charged them, the more widely they proclaimed it. ³⁷ And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

³⁹ In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,

¹⁶ Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us;" and "God has visited his people."

⁴³ Everyone was filled with awe; and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

⁵ When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.

¹¹ And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all who heard of these things.

¹⁷ This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.

¹¹ But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them.

⁸⁰ And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

⁴⁰ And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

⁴⁴ "Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men."

²¹ The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

⁴¹ And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

²¹ for no prophecy was ever made by the act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

³⁸ And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

⁴⁴ and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation."

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

⁷ In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace

³ Blessed be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has caused us to be born again into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹⁰ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!"

² which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures, ³ concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,

¹⁶ "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star."

³⁶ David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand till I put your enemies under your feet."'

²⁶ Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and enter his glory?" ²⁷ And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures.

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled."

²¹ whom heaven must receive until the time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago. ²² Moses said, 'The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; you shall listen to everything he tells you. ²³ And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet will be destroyed from among the people.' ²⁴ And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came afterwards, also announced these days.

²⁵ When they disagreed among themselves, they began to leave, after Paul had made one final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:

² which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

⁷ Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you will hear his voice,

¹² It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaventhings into which angels long to look.

¹⁰ Then I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, "You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

⁷⁴ to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,

⁸ He who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

⁵⁴ He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, ⁵⁵ as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever."

²⁵ You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.' ²⁶ For you first, God raised up his servant and sent him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways."

²⁸ As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.

¹⁵ To give a human example, brethren: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.

¹³ For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, ¹⁴ saying, "I will surely bless you and multiply you." ¹⁵ And so Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. ¹⁶ Men swear by one greater than themselves, and in all their disputes the oath is final for confirmation. ¹⁷ So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, ¹⁸ so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.

¹³ For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,

¹⁶ Men swear by one greater than themselves, and in all their disputes the oath is final for confirmation. ¹⁷ So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath,

⁷¹ that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,

²² But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is holiness and its end, eternal life.

¹⁵ For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

⁷ For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power and love and self-discipline.

¹⁵ and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

¹⁴ how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

¹⁰ Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful even until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

⁴ just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before him. In love

¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we would walk in them.

²⁴ and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

¹ Finally, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more.

⁷ For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness.

¹³ But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.

⁹ who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and the grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,

¹⁴ As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, ¹⁵ but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; ¹⁶ because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."

⁴ By these he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and become partakers of the divine nature. ⁵ For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge, ⁶ and to knowledge, self-control, and to self-control, perseverance, and to perseverance, godliness, ⁷ and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, love. ⁸ For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

³ For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."

⁹ Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'

⁵ And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.

²⁶ But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet."

² As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way"; ³ "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'"

³² But if we say, 'From men'"they feared the people, for all held that John was a real prophet.

¹⁶ And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

³² He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

⁴ As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. ⁵ Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough ways smooth; ⁶ and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"

²⁷ This is he of whom it is written: 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.' ²⁸ I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

²³ He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."

²⁷ It is he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."

²⁴ Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John was completing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'

³ "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'" ⁴ John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

³ And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

⁶ and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"

⁴⁷ Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little." ⁴⁸ And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." ⁴⁹ Then those who reclined at the table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" ⁵⁰ He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

⁷ He came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. ⁸ He was not the light, but came to bear witness of the light. ⁹ The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

¹⁵ John bore witness of him and cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'" ¹⁶ And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. ¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

²⁷ John answered, "A man can receive only what is given to him from heaven. ²⁸ You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but I have been sent before him. ²⁹ He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now full. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ "He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth, and of the earth he speaks. He who comes from heaven is above all. ³² He testifies to what he has seen and heard; yet no one receives his testimony. ³³ He who has received his testimony has certified that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure.

³⁸ And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent therefore, and turn again, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

³¹ God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

⁴³ Of him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

³⁸ Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, ³⁹ and through him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.

⁴ Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."

²⁵ whom God put forward as an atoning sacrifice by his blood, to be received through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over sins committed beforehand;

⁶ So also David describes the blessedness of the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works: ⁷ "Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; ⁸ blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not reckon his sin."

¹⁶ For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

⁴ But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, ⁵ even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

¹⁴ For this reason it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

⁸ For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

¹ Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion,

¹² So, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;

¹⁹ And we have the prophetic word made more sure, and you will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

¹⁷ But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?

⁹ In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. ¹⁰ In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

¹⁶ the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and on those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."

²⁸ Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

³² a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."

⁹ The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
