³⁰ And the Pharisees and their scribes complained against his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"

Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

³ (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.

¹⁷ One day as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal.

²¹ And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

²⁹ (And when they heard him, all the people, even the tax collectors, justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner."

¹ Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. ² And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other menextortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

⁷ And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."

⁹ There occurred a great uproar; and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and began to argue heatedly, saying, "We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?"
