³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

¹ In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." ³ For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." ⁴ Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan went out to him, ⁶ and confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. ⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bear fruit worthy of repentance, ⁹ and do not think to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ¹⁰ Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ¹¹ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹² His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'

²⁵ The baptism of Johnwhere was it from? From heaven or from men?" And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

⁸ Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ⁹ And even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." ¹⁰ And the multitudes asked him, "What then shall we do?" ¹¹ And he answered them, "He who has two tunics, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise." ¹² Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" ¹³ And he said to them, "Collect no more than is appointed you."

²⁹ (And when they heard him, all the people, even the tax collectors, justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

³⁷ And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of perfume, ³⁸ and as she stood behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the perfume. ³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." ⁴⁰ And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he said, "Teacher, say it." ⁴¹ "A certain creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. ⁴² When they had nothing with which to pay him back, he freely forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?" ⁴³ Simon answered, "I suppose the one to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." ⁴⁴ Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. ⁴⁵ You gave me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss my feet from the time I came in. ⁴⁶ You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfume. ⁴⁷ Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little." ⁴⁸ And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." ⁴⁹ Then those who reclined at the table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" ⁵⁰ He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

³³ You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. ³⁴ Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved. ³⁵ He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a time in his light. ³⁶ But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, these very works which I am doing, bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me. ³⁷ And the Father who sent me has himself testified of me. You have never heard his voice, nor seen his form. ³⁸ And you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent. ³⁹ You search the Scriptures, because in them you think that you have eternal life; and these are they that testify of me. ⁴⁰ Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

²⁵ And as John was completing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.' ²⁶ "Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. ²⁷ For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him. ²⁸ Though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. ²⁹ When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

²⁵ with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God will grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,

¹² Take care, brethren, lest there be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

⁶ and then have fallen away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put him to an open shame. ⁷ For land which drinks the rain that often falls upon it, and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. ⁸ But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed; its end is to be burned.

²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.

²¹ I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her immorality.
