⁵ But the Jews having been stirred up to jealousy, and taken to [themselves] certain wicked men of the lowest rabble, and having got a crowd together, set the city in confusion; and having beset the house of Jason sought to bring them out to the people;

⁴ And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hired with them vain and wanton men, and they followed him.

¹ But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock. ² Yea, whereto [should] the strength of their hands [profit] me, [men] in whom vigour hath perished? ³ Withered up through want and hunger, they flee into waste places long since desolate and desert: ⁴ They gather the salt-wort among the bushes, and the roots of the broom for their food. ⁵ They are driven forth from among [men] -- they cry after them as after a thief -- ⁶ To dwell in gloomy gorges, in caves of the earth and the rocks: ⁷ They bray among the bushes; under the brambles they are gathered together: ⁸ Sons of fools, and sons of nameless sires, they are driven out of the land. ⁹ And now I am their song, yea, I am their byword. ¹⁰ They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, yea, they spare not to spit in my face.

¹⁵ But at my halting they rejoiced, and gathered together: the slanderers gathered themselves together against me, and I knew [it] not; they did tear [me], and ceased not:

¹² They that sit in the gate talk of me, and [I am] the song of the drunkards.

³⁰ A sound heart is the life of the flesh; but envy the rottenness of the bones.

¹¹ Jehovah, thy hand is lifted up, but they do not see: [yet] they shall see [thy] jealousy [for] the people, and be ashamed; yea, the fire which is for thine adversaries shall devour them.

¹⁸ For he knew that they had delivered him up through envy.

⁹ And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him,

⁴⁵ But the Jews, seeing the crowds, were filled with envy, and contradicted the things said by Paul, [contradicting and] speaking injuriously.

² But the Jews who did not believe stirred up the minds of [those of] the nations and made [them] evil-affected against the brethren.

¹⁹ But there came Jews from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds and stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing him to have died.

⁷ whom Jason has received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying, that there is another king, Jesus.

¹³ But when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that the word of God was announced in Berea also by Paul, they came there also, stirring up the crowds.

¹² But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one consent rose against Paul and led him to the judgment-seat,

²⁴ For a certain [man] by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans; ²⁵ whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work, ²⁶ and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are no gods which are made with hands. ²⁷ Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres. ²⁸ And having heard [this], and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. ²⁹ And the [whole] city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with [them] Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul. ³⁰ But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not; ³¹ and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre. ³² Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together. ³³ But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people. ³⁴ But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians.

⁴⁰ For also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this [affair] of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse.

²¹ Timotheus, my fellow-workman, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you.

³ for ye are yet carnal. For whereas [there are] among you emulation and strife, are ye not carnal, and walk according to man?

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkennesses, revels, and things like these; as to which I tell you beforehand, even as I also have said before, that they who do such things shall not inherit God`s kingdom.

²⁶ Let us not become vain-glorious, provoking one another, envying one another.

¹⁴ For *ye*, brethren, have become imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; for *ye* also have suffered the same things of your own countrymen as also *they* of the Jews, ¹⁵ who have both slain the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and have driven us out by persecution, and do not please God, and [are] against all men, ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the nations that they may be saved, that they may fill up their sins always: but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.

⁵ Think ye that the scripture speaks in vain? Does the Spirit which has taken his abode in us desire enviously?
