² But some of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?

¹⁰ If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any cattle, to keep, and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, and no man see [it],

¹⁵ Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, holy to Jehovah: whoever doeth work on the sabbath day shall certainly be put to death.

² Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of rest to Jehovah: whoever does work on it shall be put to death.

³² And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness they found a man gathering sticks on the sabbath day. ³³ And they that found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to the whole assembly. ³⁴ And they put him in custody, for it was not declared what should be done to him. ³⁵ And Jehovah said to Moses, The man shall certainly be put to death: the whole assembly shall stone him with stones outside the camp.

¹³ If thou turn back thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy [day] of Jehovah, honourable; and thou honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [idle] words;

² But the Pharisees, seeing [it], said to him, Behold, thy disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on sabbath.

² Why do thy disciples transgress what has been delivered by the ancients? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.

²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye pay tithes of mint and anise and cummin, and ye have left aside the weightier matters of the law, judgment and mercy and faith: these ye ought to have done and not have left those aside. ²⁴ Blind guides, who strain out the gnat, but drink down the camel.

²⁴ And the Pharisees said to him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath what is not lawful?

³³ And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often and make supplications, in like manner those also of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink?

⁷ And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching if he would heal on the sabbath, that they might find something of which to accuse him. ⁸ But *he* knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Get up, and stand in the midst. And having risen up he stood [there]. ⁹ Jesus therefore said to them, I will ask you if it is lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy [it]?

⁹ And immediately the man became well, and took up his couch and walked: and on that day was sabbath. ¹⁰ The Jews therefore said to the healed [man], It is sabbath, it is not permitted thee to take up thy couch. ¹¹ He answered them, He that made me well, *he* said to me, Take up thy couch and walk.

¹⁶ And for this the Jews persecuted Jesus [and sought to kill him], because he had done these things on sabbath.

¹⁴ Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. ¹⁵ The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see. ¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them.
