¹⁶ And these are they in like manner who are sown upon the rocky places, who when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy,

³¹ And they come unto thee as a people cometh, and they sit before thee [as] my people, and they hear thy words, but they do them not; for with their mouth they shew much love, [but] their heart goeth after their dishonest gain. ³² And behold, thou art unto them as a lovely song, a pleasant voice, and one that playeth well on an instrument; and they hear thy words, but they do them not.

¹⁹ And a scribe came up and said to him, Teacher, I will follow thee whithersoever thou mayest go. ²⁰ And Jesus says to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven roosting-places; but the Son of man has not where he may lay his head.

²⁰ But he that is sown on the rocky places -- this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, ²¹ but has no root in himself, but is for a time only; and when tribulation or persecution happens on account of the word, he is immediately offended.

²⁰ for Herod feared John knowing that he was a just and holy man, and kept him safe; and having heard him, did many things, and heard him gladly.

¹⁷ And as he went forth into the way, a person ran up to [him], and kneeling to him asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? ¹⁸ But Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? no one is good but one, [that is] God. ¹⁹ Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour thy father and mother. ²⁰ And he answering said to him, Teacher, all these things have I kept from my youth. ²¹ And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, One thing lackest thou: go, sell whatever thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, [taking up the cross]. ²² But he, sad at the word, went away grieved, for he had large possessions.

¹³ But those upon the rock, those who when they hear receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a time, and in time of trial fall away.

³⁵ *He* was the burning and shining lamp, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

¹³ And Simon also himself believed; and, having been baptised, continued constantly with Philip; and, beholding the signs and great works of power which took place, was astonished.

¹⁸ But Simon, having seen that by the laying on of the hands of the apostles the [Holy] Spirit was given, offered them money, ¹⁹ saying, Give to me also this power, in order that on whomsoever I may lay hands he may receive [the] Holy Spirit. ²⁰ And Peter said to him, Thy money go with thee to destruction, because thou hast thought that the gift of God can be obtained by money. ²¹ Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not upright before God.

²⁵ And as he reasoned concerning righteousness, and temperance, and the judgment about to come, Felix, being filled with fear, answered, Go for the present, and when I get an opportunity I will send for thee; ²⁶ hoping at the same time that money would be given him by Paul: wherefore also he sent for him the oftener and communed with him.

²⁸ And Agrippa [said] to Paul, In a little thou persuadest me to become a Christian.
