³¹ But yet in the embassy of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to inquire of the wonder that had happened upon the earth, God left him that he might be tempted, and all things might be made known that were in his heart.

¹ After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.

² And thou shalt remember all the way through which the Lord thy God hath brought thee for forty years through the desert, to afflict thee and to prove thee, and that the things that were known in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.

¹⁶ And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee,

³ Thou shalt not hear the words of that prophet or dreamer: for the Lord your God trieth you, that it may appear whether you love him with all your heart, and with all your soul, or not.

²⁰ And she said: The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And awaking from sleep, he said in his mind: I will go out as I did before, and shake myself, not knowing that the Lord was departed from him.

⁸ And Ezechias had said to Isaias: What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord the third day? ⁹ And Isaias said to him: This shall be the sign from the Lord, that the Lord will do the word which he hath spoken: Wilt thou that the shadow go forward ten lines, or that it go back so many degrees? ¹⁰ And Ezechias said: It is an easy matter for the shadow to go forward ten lines: and I do not desire that this be done, but let it return back ten degrees. ¹¹ And Isaias, the prophet, called upon the Lord, and he brought the shadow ten degrees backwards by the lines, by which it had already gone down on the dial of Achaz. ¹² At that time Berodach Baladan, the son of Baladan, king of the Babylonians, sent letters and presents to Ezechias: for he had heard that Ezechias had been sick. ¹³ And Ezechias rejoiced at their coming, and he shewed them the house of his aromatical spices, and the gold, and the silver, and divers precious odours, and ointments, and the house of his vessels, and all that he had in his treasures. There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominions, that Ezechias shewed them not.

²⁴ In those days Ezechias was sick even to death, and he prayed to the Lord: and he heard him, and gave him a sign.

¹¹ But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he bless thee not to thy face. ¹² Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

³ And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant, Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence? But thou hast moved me against him, that I should afflict him without cause. ⁴ And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin; and all that a man hath, he will give for his life: ⁵ But put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt see that he will bless thee to thy face. ⁶ And the Lord said to Satan: Behold, he is in thy hand, but yet save his life.

⁹ Turn not away thy face from me; decline not in thy wrath from thy servant. Be thou my helper, forsake me not; do not thou despise me, O God my Saviour.

^{11 (51:13)} Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me. ^{12 (51:14)} Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.

¹¹⁶ Uphold me according to thy word, and I shall live: and let me not be confounded in my expectation. ¹¹⁷ Help me, and I shall be saved: and I will meditate always on thy justifications.

¹ Unto the end, a psalm of David. Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me: ² Thou hast known my sitting down, and my rising up.

²³ Prove me, O God, and know my heart: examine me, and know my paths. ²⁴ And see if there be in me the way of iniquity: and lead me in the eternal way.

³ As silver is tried by fire, and gold in the furnace: so the Lord trieth the hearts.

⁷ And this shall be a sign to thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do this word which he hath spoken: ⁸ Behold I will bring again the shadow of the lines, by which it is now gone down in the sun dial of Achaz with the sun, ten lines backward. And the sun returned ten lines by the degrees by which it was gone down.

There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion that Ezechias shewed them not. ³ Then Isaias the prophet came to king Ezechias, and said to him: What said these men, and from whence came they to thee? And Ezechias said: From a far country they came to me, from Babylon. ⁴ And he said: What saw they in thy house? And Ezechias said: All things that are in my house have they seen, there was not any thing which I have not shewn them in my treasures. ⁵ And Isaias said to Ezechias: Hear the word of the Lord of hosts. ⁶ Behold the days shall come that all that is in thy house, and that thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried away into Babylon: there shall not any thing be left, saith the Lord. ⁷ And of thy children, that shall issue from thee, whom thou shalt beget, they shall take away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. ⁸ And Ezechias said to Isaias: The word of the Lord, which he hath spoken, is good. And he said: Only let peace and truth be in my days.

⁹ And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined: and I will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say: Thou art my people: and they shall say: The Lord is my God.

² And who shall be able to think of the day of his coming? and who shall stand to see him? for he is like a refining fire, and like thc fuller's herb: ³ And he shall sit refining and cleansing the silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and shall refine them as gold, and as silver, and they shall offer sacrifices to the Lord in justice.

⁵ I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.

¹³ Let no man, when he is tempted, say that he is tempted by God. For God is not a tempter of evils: and he tempteth no man.

⁷ That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
