³ Thus saith the Lord God: Woe to the foolish prophets that follow their own spirit, and see nothing.

² The tongue of the wise adorneth knowledge: but the mouth of fools bubbleth out folly.

¹⁴ The heart of the wise seeketh instruction: and the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

¹ Woe to the pastors, that destroy and tear the sheep of my pasture, saith the Lord.

²⁸ The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream: and he that hath my word, let him speak my word with truth: what hath the chaff to do with the wheat, saith the Lord? ²⁹ Are not my words as a fire, saith the Lord: and as a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? ³⁰ Therefore behold I am against the prophets, saith the Lord: who steal my words every one from his neighbour. ³¹ Behold I am against the prophets, saith the Lord: who use their tongues, and say: The Lord saith it. ³² Behold I am against the prophets that have lying dreams, saith the Lord: and tell them, and cause my people to err by their lying, and by their wonders: when I sent them not, nor commanded them, who have not profited this people at all, saith the Lord.

¹⁴ Nun. Thy prophets have seen false and foolish things for thee: and they have not laid open thy iniquity, to excite thee to penance: but they have seen for thee false revelations and banishments.

⁶ They see vain things, and they foretell lies, saying: The Lord saith: whereas the Lord hath not sent them: and they have persisted to confirm what they have said. ⁷ Have you not seen a vain vision and spoken a lying divination: and you say: The Lord saith: whereas I have not spoken.

¹⁸ And say: Thus saith the Lord God: Woe to them that sew cushions under every elbow: and make pillows for the heads of persons of every age to catch souls: and when they caught the souls of my people, they gave life to their souls.

² Son of man, prophesy concerning the shepherds of Israel: prophesy, and say to the shepherds: Thus saith the Lord God: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, that fed themselves: should not the flocks be fed by the shepherds?

⁷ The days of visitation are come, the days of repaying are come: know ye, O Israel, that the prophet was foolish, the spiritual man was mad, for the multitude of thy iniquity, and the multitude of thy madness.

¹⁵ And the Lord said to me: Take to thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd.

¹³ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for you yourselves do not enter in and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter. ¹⁴ Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour the houses of widows, praying long prayers. For this you shall receive the greater judgment. ¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte. And when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves. ¹⁶ Woe to you, blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple is a debtor. ¹⁷ Ye foolish and blind: for whether is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? ¹⁸ And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor. ¹⁹ Ye foolish and blind: for whether is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore that sweareth by the altar sweareth by it and by all things that are upon it. ²¹ And whosoever shall swear by the temple sweareth by it and by him that dwelleth in it. ²² And he that sweareth by heaven sweareth by the throne of God and by him that sitteth thereon. ²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint and anise and cummin and have left the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and faith. These things you ought to have done and not to leave those undone. ²⁴ Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. ²⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness. ²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean. ²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear to men beautiful but within are full of dead men's bones and of all filthiness. ²⁸ So you also outwardly indeed appear to men just: but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. ²⁹ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, that build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just,

⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make also that which is within?

⁴² But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb and pass over judgment and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues and salutations in the marketplace. ⁴⁴ Woe to you, because you are as sepulchres that appear not: and men that walk over are not aware. ⁴⁵ And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him: Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also. ⁴⁶ But he said: Woe to you lawyers also, because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them.

⁵² Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered in: and those that were entering in, you have hindered.

¹⁶ For if I preach the gospel, it is no glory to me: for a necessity lieth upon me. For woe is unto me if I preach not the gospel.

⁴ He is proud, knowing nothing, but sick about questions and strifes of words; from which arise envies, contentions, blasphemies, evil suspicions,

⁹ But they shall proceed no farther: for their folly shall be manifest to all men, as theirs also was.
