⁵ Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so will I regard the captives of Juda, whom I have sent forth out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans, for their good.

¹⁶ And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee,

¹² Blessed is the man whom thou shalt instruct, O Lord: and shalt teach him out of thy law. ¹³ That thou mayst give him rest from the evil days: till a pit be dug for the wicked. ¹⁴ For the Lord will not cast off his people: neither will he forsake his own inheritance.

⁶⁷ Before I was humbled I offended; therefore have I kept thy word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that thou hast humbled me, that I may learn thy justifications.

⁷ The Lord is good, and giveth strength in the day of trouble: and knoweth them that hope in him.

⁹ And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined: and I will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say: Thou art my people: and they shall say: The Lord is my God.

¹² But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice. And I know them: and they follow me.

²⁸ And we know that to them that love God all things work together unto good: to such as, according to his purpose, are called to be saints.

³ But if any man love God, the same is known by him.

⁹ But now, after that you have known God, or rather are known by God: how turn you again to the weak and needy elements which you desire to serve again?

¹⁹ But the sure foundation of God standeth firm, having this seal: the Lord knoweth who are his; and let every one depart from iniquity who nameth the name of the Lord.

⁵ And you have forgotten the consolation which speaketh to you, as unto children, saying: My son, neglect not the discipline of the Lord: neither be thou wearied whilst thou art rebuked by him. ⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chastiseth: and he scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. ⁷ Persevere under discipline. God dealeth with you as with his sons. For what son is there whom the father doth not correct? ⁸ But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are made partakers, then are you bastards and not sons. ⁹ Moreover, we have had fathers of our flesh for instructors, and we reverenced them. Shall we not much more obey the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ And they indeed for a few days, according to their own pleasure, instructed us: but he, for our profit, that we might receive his sanctification.

¹⁹ Such as I love, I rebuke and chastise. Be zealous therefore and do penance.
