²² For my foolish people have not known me: they are foolish and senseless children: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

⁶ Is this the return thou makest to the Lord, O foolish and senseless people? Is not he thy father, that hath possessed thee, and made thee, and created thee?

²⁸ They are a nation without counsel, and without wisdom.

³ Now Ammon had a friend, named Jonadab the son of Semmaa the brother of David, a very wise man:

²¹ And Achitophel said to Absalom: Go in to the concubines of thy father, whom he hath left to keep the house: that when all Israel shall hear that thou hast disgraced thy father, their hands may be strengthened with thee. ²² So they spread a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and he went in to his father's concubines before all Israel. ²³ Now the counsel of Achitophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man should consult God: so was all the counsel of Achitophel, both when he was with David, and when he was with Absalom.

¹ Unto the end, a psalm for David. The fool hath said in his heart: There is no God. They are corrupt, and are become abominable in their ways: there is none that doth good, no not one. ² The Lord hath looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there be any that understand and seek God. ³ They are all gone aside, they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good: no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they acted deceitfully: the poison of asps is under their lips. Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood. Destruction and unhappiness in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. ⁴ Shall not all they know that work iniquity, who devour my people as they eat bread?

³ The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel hath not known me, and my people hath not understood.

⁹ And he said: Go, and thou shalt say to this people: Hearing, hear, and understand not: and see the vision, and know it not. ¹⁰ Blind the heart of this people, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes: lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted and I heal them.

¹¹ Its harvest shall be destroyed with drought, women shall come and teach it: for it is not a wise people, therefore he that made it, shall not have mercy on it: and he that formed it, shall not spare it.

¹⁰ For the Lord hath mingled for you the spirit of a deep sleep, he will shut up your eyes, he will cover your prophets and princes, that see visions. ¹¹ And the vision of all shall be unto you as the words of a book that is sealed which when they shall deliver to one that is learned, they shall say: Read this: and he shall answer: I cannot, for it is sealed. ¹² And the book shall be given to one that knoweth no letters, and it shall be said to him: Read: and he shall answer: I know no letters.

¹⁹ Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, but he to whom I have sent my messengers? Who is blind, but he that is sold? or who is blind, but the servant of the Lord? ²⁰ Thou that seest many things, wilt thou not observe them? thou that hast ears open, wilt thou not hear?

⁴ But I said: Perhaps these are poor and foolish, that know not the way of the Lord, the judgment of their God.

²¹ Hear, O foolish people, and without understanding: who have eyes, and see not: and ears, and hear not.

⁷ The kite in the air hath known her time: the turtle, and the swallow, and the stork have observed the time of their coming: but my people have not known the judgment of the Lord. ⁸ How do you say: We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? Indeed the lying pens of the scribes hath wrought falsehood. ⁹ The wise men are confounded, they are dismayed, and taken: for they have cast away the word of the Lord, and there is no wisdom in them.

⁸ They shall be all proved together to be senseless and foolish: the doctrine of their vanity is wood.

²³ If the Ethiopian can change his skin, or the leopard his spots: you also may do well, when you have learned evil.

¹ Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel, for the Lord shall enter into judgment with the inhabitants of the land: for there is no truth, and there is no mercy, and there is no knowledge of God in the land.

⁶ My people have been silent, because they had no knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will reject thee, that thou shalt not do the office of priesthood to me: and thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children.

⁴ They will not set their thoughts to return to their God: for the spirit of fornication is in the midst of them, and they have not known the Lord.

¹ Woe to you that devise that which is unprofitable, and work evil in your beds: in the morning light they execute it, because their hand is against God.

¹⁶ Woe to you, blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple is a debtor. ¹⁷ Ye foolish and blind: for whether is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? ¹⁸ And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor. ¹⁹ Ye foolish and blind: for whether is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore that sweareth by the altar sweareth by it and by all things that are upon it. ²¹ And whosoever shall swear by the temple sweareth by it and by him that dwelleth in it. ²² And he that sweareth by heaven sweareth by the throne of God and by him that sitteth thereon. ²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint and anise and cummin and have left the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and faith. These things you ought to have done and not to leave those undone. ²⁴ Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. ²⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness. ²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean.

⁸ And the lord commended the unjust steward, forasmuch as he had done wisely: for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.

³ And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father nor me.

²² For, professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

²⁸ And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient.

¹¹ There is none that understandeth: there is none that seeketh after God.

¹⁹ For your obedience is published in every place. I rejoice therefore in you. But I would have you to be wise in good and simple in evil.

²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? ²¹ For, seeing that in the wisdom of God, the world, by wisdom, knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of our preaching, to save them that believe.

²⁰ Brethren, do not become children in sense. But in malice be children: and in sense be perfect.
