⁵¹ Ain. My eye hath wasted my soul because of all the daughters of my city.

³⁴ For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I be a witness of the calamity that will oppress my father.

³ So when David and his men came to the city, and found it burnt with fire, and that their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives, ⁴ David and the people that were with him, lifted up their voices, and wept till they had no more tears.

¹⁹ My bowels, my bowels are in part, the senses of my heart are troubled within me, I will not hold my peace, for my soul hath heard the sound of the trumpet, the cry of battle. ²⁰ Destruction upon destruction is called for, and all the earth is laid waste: my tents are destroyed on a sudden, and my pavilions in a moment. ²¹ How long shall I see men fleeing away, how long shall I hear the sound of the trumpet?

²² Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts: Behold I will visit upon them: their young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall die by famine.

¹⁶ And the people to whom they prophesy, shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword, and there shall be none to bury them: they and their wives, their sons and their daughters, and I will pour out their own wickedness upon them.

¹⁸ If I go forth into the fields, behold the slain with the sword: and if I enter into the city, behold them that are consumed with famine. The prophet also and the priest are gone into a land which they knew not.

⁹ And I will feed them with the flesh of their sons, and with the flesh of their daughters: and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege, and in the distress wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

¹⁸ Sade. The Lord is just, for I have provoked his mouth to wrath: hear, I pray you, all ye people, and see my sorrow: my virgins, and my young men are gone into captivity.

²¹ Sin. The child and the old man lie without on the ground: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword: thou hast slain them in the day of thy wrath: thou hast killed, and shewn them no pity.

¹¹ They oppressed the women in Sion, and the virgins in the cities of Juda.

⁴¹ And when he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying: ⁴² If thou also hadst known, and that in this thy day, the things that are to thy peace: but now they are hidden from thy eyes. ⁴³ For the days shall come upon thee: and thy enemies shall cast a trench about thee and compass thee round and straiten thee on every side, ⁴⁴ And beat thee flat to the ground, and thy children who are in thee. And they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone: because thou hast not known the time of thy visitation.
