²⁴ And Jesus seeing him become sorrowful, said: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God

¹⁰ And when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land, for which he swore to thy fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: and shall have given thee great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build, ¹¹ Houses full of riches, which thou didst not set up, cisterns which thou didst not dig, vineyards and oliveyards, which thou didst not plant, ¹² And thou shalt have eaten and be full:

¹¹ Take heed, and beware lest at any time thou forget the Lord thy God, and neglect his commandments and judgments and ceremonies, which I command thee this day: ¹² Lest after thou hast eaten and art filled, hast built goodly houses, and dwelt in them, ¹³ And shalt have herds of oxen and flocks of sheep, and plenty of gold and of silver, and of all things, ¹⁴ Thy heart be lifted up, and thou remember not the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage: ¹⁵ And was thy leader in the great and terrible wilderness, wherein there was the serpent burning with his breath, and the scorpion and the dipsas, and no waters at all: who brought forth streams out of the hardest rock, ¹⁶ And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee, ¹⁷ Lest thou shouldst say in thy heart: My own might, and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me.

³ For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul: and the unjust man is blessed.

⁵ They are not in the labour of men: neither shall they be scourged like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride hath held them fast: they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness. ⁷ Their iniquity hath come forth, as it were from fatness: they have passed into the affection of the heart. ⁸ They have thought and spoken wickedness: they have spoken iniquity on high. ⁹ They have set their mouth against heaven: and their tongue hath passed through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore will my people return here and full days shall be found in them. ¹¹ And they said: How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? ¹² Behold these are sinners; and yet, abounding in the world they have obtained riches.

²⁸ He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the just shall spring up as a green leaf.

¹¹ The substance of the rich man is the city of his strength, and as a strong wall compassing him about.

⁹ Lest perhaps being filled, I should be tempted to deny, and say: Who is the Lord? or being compelled by poverty, I should steal, and forswear the name of my God.

³¹ See ye the word of the Lord: Am I become a wilderness to Israel, or a lateward springing land? why then have my people said: We are revolted, we will come to thee no more?

⁵ I will go therefore to the great men, and will speak to them: for they have known the way of the Lord, the judgment of their God: and behold these have altogether broken the yoke more, and have burst the bonds.

²³ Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴ And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. ²⁵ And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered much, saying: Who then can be saved?

²⁶ And the king was struck sad. Yet because of his oath, and because of them that were with him at table, he would not displease her:

²³ And Jesus looking round about, saith to his disciples: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁴ And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus again answering, saith to them: Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God? ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. ²⁶ Who wondered the more, saying among themselves: Who then can be saved? ²⁷ And Jesus looking on them, saith with men it is impossible; but not with God. For all things are possible with God.

²⁶ For see your vocation, brethren, that there are not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble. ²⁷ But the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise: and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong.

⁹ Now I am glad: not because you were made sorrowful, but because you were made sorrowful unto penance. For you were made sorrowful according to God, that you might suffer damage by us in nothing. ¹⁰ For the sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

⁹ For they that will become rich fall into temptation and into the snare of the devil and into many unprofitable and hurtful desires, which drown men into destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the desire of money is the root of all evils; which some coveting have erred from the faith and have entangled themselves in many sorrows.

⁵ Hearken, my dearest brethren: Hath not God chosen the poor in this world, rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love him? ⁶ But you have dishonoured the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you by might? And do not they draw you before the judgment seats? ⁷ Do not they blaspheme the good name that is invoked upon you?

¹ Go to now, ye rich men: weep and howl in your miseries, which shall come upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted: and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is cankered: and the rust of them shall be for a testimony against you and shall eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up to yourselves wrath against the last days. ⁴ Behold the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which by fraud has been kept back by you, crieth: and the cry of them hath entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ You have feasted upon earth: and in riotousness you have nourished your hearts, in the day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned and put to death the Just One: and he resisted you not.
