⁴ The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

^{25 (4:22)} They shall cast thee out from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with cattle, and with wild beasts, and thou shalt eat grass, as an ox, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven: and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth over the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. ^{26 (4:23)} But whereas he commanded, that the stump of the roots thereof, that is, of the tree, should be left: thy kingdom shall remain to thee, after thou shalt have known that power is from heaven.

⁷ And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind? ⁸ But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings. ⁹ But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yea I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before my face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ¹¹ Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John: ¹⁴ And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come. ¹⁵ He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁶ But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place. ¹⁷ Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned. ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil. ¹⁹ The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.

¹¹ But he answering, said to them: Elias indeed shall come, and restore all things. ¹² But I say to you, that Elias is already come, and they knew him not, But have done unto him whatsoever they had a mind. So also the Son of man shall suffer from them.

²⁵ The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men? But they thought within themselves, saying: ²⁶ If we shall say, from heaven, he will say to us: Why then did you not believe him? But if we shall say, from men, we are afraid of the multitude: for all held John as a prophet. ²⁷ And answering Jesus, they said: We know not. He also said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁸ But what think you? A certain man had two sons: and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard. ²⁹ And he answering, said: I will not. But afterwards, being moved with repentance, he went. ³⁰ And coming to the other, he said in like manner. And he answering said: I go, Sir. And he went not. ³¹ Which of the two did the father's will? They say to him: The first. Jesus saith to them: Amen I say to you that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came to you in the way of justice: and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him.

²⁸ For I say to you: Amongst those that are born of men, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist. But he that is the lesser in the kingdom of God is greater than he. ²⁹ And all the people hearing, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with John's baptism. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him. ³¹ And the Lord said: Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? ³² They are like to children sitting in the marketplace and speaking one to another and saying: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have mourned, and you have not wept. ³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine. And you say: He hath a devil. ³⁴ The Son of man is come eating and drinking. And you say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners. ³⁵ And wisdom is justified by all her children.

¹⁸ I will arise and will go to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee.

⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

¹⁹ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou? ²⁰ And he confessed and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No. ²² They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias. ²⁴ And they that were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying: I baptize with water: but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not. ²⁷ The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
