¹² Saying: These last have worked but one hour. and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats.

² For they seek me from day to day, and desire to know my ways, as a nation that hath done justice, and hath not forsaken the judgment of their God: they ask of me the judgments of justice: they are willing to approach to God. ³ Why have we fasted, and thou hast not regarded: have we humbled our souls, and thou hast not taken notice? Behold in the day of your fast your own will is found, and you exact of all your debtors.

⁸ And when the sun was risen, the Lord commanded a hot and burning wind: and the sun beat upon the head of Jonas, and he broiled with the heat: and he desired for his soul that he might die, and said: It is better for me to die than to live.

³ To speak to the priests of the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying: Must I weep in the fifth month, or must I sanctify myself as I have now done for many years? ⁴ And the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying: ⁵ Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying: When you fasted, and mourned in the fifth and the seventh month for these seventy years: did you keep a fast unto me?

¹³ And you have said: Behold of our labour, and you puffed it away, saith the Lord of hosts, and you brought in of rapine the lame, and the sick, and brought in an offering: shall I accept it at your hands, saith the Lord?

¹⁴ And you have said: What have we spoken against thee? You have said: He laboureth in vain that serveth God, and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinances, and that we have walked sorrowful before the Lord of hosts?

⁵⁵ And when ye see the south wind blow, you say: There will heat. And it cometh to pass.

¹⁰ But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee. ¹¹ Because every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled: and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²⁹ And he answering, said to his father: Behold, for so many years do I serve thee and I have never transgressed thy commandment: and yet thou hast never given me a kid to make merry with my friends. ³⁰ But as soon as this thy son is come, who hath devoured his substance with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

¹¹ The Pharisee standing, prayed thus with himself: O God, I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, as also is this publican. ¹² I fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess.

²² Even the justice of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction. ²³ For all have sinned and do need the glory of God. ²⁴ Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

²⁷ Where is then thy boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.

³⁰ For it is one God that justifieth circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith.

³⁰ What then shall we say? That the Gentiles who followed not after justice have attained to justice, even the justice that is of faith. ³¹ But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice. ³² Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone.

¹ Brethren, the will of my heart, indeed and my prayer to God is for them unto salvation. ² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. ³ For they, not knowing the justice of God and seeking to establish their own, have not submitted themselves to the justice of God.

⁵ Even so then, at this present time also, there is a remnant saved according to the election of grace. ⁶ And if by grace, it is not now by works: otherwise grace is no more grace.

¹¹ Even unto this hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no fixed abode.

²³ They are the ministers of Christ (I speak as one less wise): I am more; in many more labours, in prisons more frequently, in stripes above measure, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times did I receive forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice was I beaten with rods: once I was stoned: thrice I suffered shipwreck: a night and a day I was in the depth of the sea. ²⁶ In journeying often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils from my own nation, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils from false brethren: ²⁷ In labour and painfulness, in much watchings, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness: ²⁸ Besides those things which are without: my daily instance, the solicitude for all the churches.

⁶ That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs and of the same body: and copartners of his promise in Christ Jesus, by the gospel

¹¹ For the sun rose with a burning heat and parched the grass: and the flower thereof fell off, and the beauty of the shape thereof perished. So also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
