² O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance. ³ As the sand of the sea, this would appear heavier: therefore, my words are full of sorrow: ⁴ For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.

My heart is become like wax melting in the midst of my bowels. ^{15 (22:16)} My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: and thou hast brought me down into the dust of death. ^{16 (22:17)} For many dogs have encompassed me: the council of the malignant hath besieged me. They have dug my hands and feet. ^{17 (22:18)} They have numbered all my bones. And they have looked and stared upon me. ^{18 (22:19)} They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots. ^{19 (22:20)} But thou, O Lord, remove not thy help to a distance from me; look towards my defence. ^{20 (22:21)} Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword: my only one from the hand of the dog. ^{21 (22:22)} Save me from the lion's mouth; and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns.

^{17 (69:18)} And turn not away thy face from thy servant: for I am in trouble, hear me speedily. ^{18 (69:19)} Attend to my soul, and deliver it: save me because of my enemies. ^{19 (69:20)} Thou knowest my reproach, and my confusion, and my shame. ^{20 (69:21)} In thy sight are all they that afflict me; my heart hath expected reproach and misery. And I looked for one that would grieve together with me, but there was none: and for one that would comfort me, and I found none. ^{21 (69:22)} And they gave me gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

^{2 (77:3)} In the days of my trouble I sought God, with my hands lifted up to him in the night, and I was not deceived. My soul refused to be comforted:

^{14 (88:15)} Lord, why castest thou off my prayer: why turnest thou away thy face from me? ^{15 (88:16)} I am poor, and in labours from my youth: and being exalted have been humbled and troubled.

¹⁸ Their soul abhorred all manner of meat: and they drew nigh even to the gates of death.

²⁶ They mount up to the heavens, and they go down to the depths: their soul pined away with evils.

³ For the enemy hath persecuted my soul: he hath brought down my life to the earth. He hath made me to dwell in darkness as those that have been dead of old: ⁴ And my spirit is in anguish within me: my heart within me is troubled.

³ Despised, and the most abject of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with infirmity: and his look was as it were hidden and despised, whereupon we esteemed him not.

¹⁰ And the Lord was pleased to bruise him in infirmity: if he shall lay down his life for sin, he shall see a longlived seed, and the will of the Lord shall be prosperous in his hand. ¹¹ Because his soul hath laboured, he shall see and be filled: by his knowledge shall this my just servant justify many, and he shall bear their iniquities.

¹⁵ He. He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath inebriated me with wormwood. ¹⁶ Vau. And he hath broken my teeth one by one, he hath fed me with ashes. ¹⁷ Vau. And my soul is removed far off from peace, I have forgotten good things. ¹⁸ Vau. And I said: My end and my hope is perished from the Lord. ¹⁹ Zain. Remember my poverty, and transgression, the wormwood and the gall.

³⁷ And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad. ³⁸ Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death. Stay you here and watch with me. ³⁹ And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will but as thou wilt.

³³ And he taketh Peter and James and John with him: and he began to fear and to be heavy. ³⁴ And he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death. Stay you here and watch.
