DAVID ANOINTED SOVEREIGN
And so be it, after this, David asks of Yah Veh, saying, Ascend I into one of the cities of Yah Hudah? And Yah Veh says to him, Ascend. And David says, Whither ascend I? And he says, To Hebron. 2 So David ascends thither and also his two women, Achiy Noam the Yizre Eliyth and the woman of Abi Gail, Nabal the Karmeliy: 3 and David ascends with his men - every man with his household; and they settle in the cities of Hebron: 4 and the men of Yah Hudah come and there they anoint David sovereign over the house of Yah Hudah. And they tell David, saying, The men of Yabesh Gilad entombed Shaul. 5 And David sends angels to the men of Yabesh Gilad and says to them, Blessed - you of Yah Veh to work this mercy to your adoni - to Shaul and entomb him: 6 and now, Yah Veh work mercy and truth to you; and I also work you this goodness because you worked this word: 7 and now strengthen your hands and become sons of valour: for your adoni Shaul died and also the house of Yah Hudah anointed me sovereign over them. 8
THE SON OF SHAUL REIGNS OVER YISRA EL
And Abi Ner the son of Ner, governor of the host of Shaul, takes Ish Bosheth the son of Shaul and passes him over to Machanayim; 9 and has him reign over Gilad and over the Ashshuriy and over Yizre El and over Ephrayim and over Ben Yamin and over all Yisra El. 10 Ish Bosheth the son of Shaul is a son of forty years; and he begins to reign over Yisra El and reigns two years: only, the house of Yah Hudah goes after David. 11 And the number of days David is sovereign in Hebron over the house of Yah Hudah is seven years and six months. 12
CIVIL WAR
And Abi Ner the son of Ner and the servants of Ish Bosheth the son of Shaul go from Machanayim to Gibon: 13 and Yah Ab the son of Seruyah and the servants of David go and meet by the pool of Gibon: and they settle - the one by the pool here and the one by the pool there. 14 And Abi Ner says to Yah Ab, Have the lads now rise and entertain at our face. And Yah Ab says, Rise. 15 And they rise and pass over by number twelve of Ben Yamin of Ish Bosheth the son of Shaul and twelve of the servants of David: 16 each man holds his friend by the head and his sword in the side of his friend; and they fall together: and they call that place Helgath Hats Surim - in Gibon. 17 And there is a mighty hard war that day; and Abi Ner and the men of Yisra El are smitten at the face of the servants of David. 18 And three sons of Seruyah are there: Yah Ab and Abi Shai and Asa El: and Asa El is as swift of foot as one of the gazelles in the field: 19 and Asa El pursues after Abi Ner; and in going he spreads neither to the right nor to the left after Abi Ner. 20 Then Abi Ner faces back and says, Are you Asa El? And he says, I. 21 And Abi Ner says to him, Spread to your right or to your left and hold on to one of the lads and take his clothes. - and Asa El wills to not turn aside from after him. 22 And Abi Ner adds to say to Asa El, Turn aside from after me! Why smite I you to the earth? How then lift I my face to Yah Ab your brother? 23 And he refuses to turn aside: and Abi Ner smites him under the fifth with the back of the spear so that the spear goes out behind him; and there he falls and dies under it: and so be it, all who come to the place where Asa El falls and dies stand still: 24 and Yah Ab and Abi Shai pursue Abi Ner: and the sun descends and they come to the hill of Ammah at the face of Giach by the way of the wilderness of Gibon: 25 and the sons of Ben Yamin gather themselves together after Abi Ner and become one band and stand on the top of one hill. 26 And Abi Ner calls to Yah Ab and says, The sword - devours it in perpetuity? Know you not that it embitters in the latter end? How long be it then, ere you say to the people to return from after their brothers? 27 And Yah Ab says, Elohim lives: unless you had worded, surely then in the morning the people had ascended each man from after his brother. 28 So Yah Ab blasts a shophar and all the people stand still; and neither pursue Yisra El any more, nor add still to fight: 29 and Abi Ner and his men walk all that night through the plain and pass over Yarden and go through all Bithron and come to Machanayim. 30 And Yah Ab returns from after Abi Ner: and when he gathers all the people there are mustered, of the servants of David, nineteen men and Asa El: 31 and the servants of David smite of Ben Yamin and of the men of Abi Ner so that three hundred and sixty men die. 32 And they lift Asa El and entomb him in the tomb of his father in Beth Lechem. And Yah Ab and his men go all night and come to Hebron at light.
