¹ ¶ The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron, four. ² The sons of Tola: Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Jibsam, and Shemuel, heads of the houses of their fathers. Those of Tola numbered by their families twenty-two thousand valiant men of might in the days of David. ³ The son of Uzzi was Izrahiah; and the sons of Izrahiah: Michael, Obadiah, Joel, Ishiah, all of them, five princes. ⁴ And with them, by their lineages, after the houses of their fathers, were bands of soldiers for war, thirty-six thousand men, for they had many wives and sons. ⁵ And their brethren among all the families of Issachar were valiant men of might, reckoned in all by their genealogies eighty-seven thousand. ⁶ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, and Jediael, three. ⁷ The sons of Bela: Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri, five, heads of the houses of their fathers, mighty men of valour; and were reckoned by their genealogies twenty-two thousand and thirty-four. ⁸ The sons of Becher: Zemira, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jerimoth, Abiah, Anathoth, and Alameth. All these are the sons of Becher. ⁹ And the number of them, after their genealogy by their generations, heads of the houses of their fathers, mighty men of valour, was twenty thousand two hundred. ¹⁰ The son of Jediael was Bilhan; and the sons of Bilhan: Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Chenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish, and Ahishahar. ¹¹ All these were sons of Jediael, by the heads of their fathers, mighty men of valour, seventeen thousand two hundred soldiers, fit to go out for war and battle. ¹² And Shuppim and Huppim were sons of Ir; and Hushim, the son of Aher. ¹³ The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah. ¹⁴ The sons of Manasseh: Ashriel, whom his concubine, the Aramitess, gave birth unto him; she also gave birth to Machir, the father of Gilead. ¹⁵ And Machir took wives of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister’s name was Maachah, and the name of the second was Zelophehad. And Zelophehad had daughters. ¹⁶ And Maachah, the wife of Machir, gave birth to a son unto him, and she called his name Peresh, and the name of his brother was Sheresh, whose sons were Ulam and Rakem. ¹⁷ The son of Ulam was Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh. ¹⁸ And his sister Hammoleketh gave birth to Ishod, Abiezer, and Mahalah. ¹⁹ And the sons of Shemida were, Ahian, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam. ²⁰ ¶ The sons of Ephraim: Shuthelah, Bered, his son, Tahath his son, Eladah, his son, Tahath, his son, ²¹ Zabad, his son, Shuthelah, his son, Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew because they came down to take away their livestock. ²² And Ephraim, their father, mourned many days, and his brethren came to comfort him. ²³ And when he went in to his wife, she conceived and gave birth to a son, and he called his name Beriah, because he had been in affliction in his house. ²⁴ (And his daughter was Sherah, who built Bethhoron, the lower and the upper, and Uzzensherah.) ²⁵ And Rephah was his son, also Resheph, and Telah his son, and Tahan, his son, ²⁶ Laadan, his son, Ammihud, his son, Elishama, his son, ²⁷ Nun, his son, Joshua, his son. ²⁸ And their inheritance and habitation was Bethel with its towns, and eastward Naaran, and westward Gezer with its towns; likewise Shechem and its towns unto Gaza and its towns, ²⁹ and by the side of the sons of Manasseh, Bethshean and her towns, Taanach and her towns, Megiddo and her towns, Dor and her towns. In these dwelt the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel. ³⁰ The sons of Asher: Imnah, Isuah, Ishuai, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. ³¹ And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel, who was the father of Birzavith. ³² And Heber begat Japhlet, Shomer, Hotham, and Shua their sister. ³³ The sons of Japhlet: Pasach, Bimhal, and Ashvath. These were the sons of Japhlet. ³⁴ And the sons of Shamer: Ahi, Rohgah, Jehubbah, and Aram. ³⁵ The sons of his brother Helem: Zophah, Imna, Shelesh, and Amal. ³⁶ The sons of Zophah: Suah, Harnepher, Shual, Beri, Imrah, ³⁷ Bezer, Hod, Shamma, Shilshah, Ithran, and Beera. ³⁸ The sons of Jether: Jephunneh, Pispah, and Ara. ³⁹ And the sons of Ulla: Arah, Haniel, and Rezia. ⁴⁰ All these were sons of Asher, heads of their father’s houses, chosen, mighty men of valour, heads of princes. And the number throughout the genealogy of those that were apt for war and for battle was twenty-six thousand men.

²³ The sons of Issachar by their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Pua, the family of the Punites; ²⁴ of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.

¹ ¶ And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah. ² For the king said to Joab, the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel from Dan unto Beersheba and number the people that I may know the number of the people. ³ And Joab replied unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people one hundredfold to however many there are and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it, but why does my lord the king delight in this thing? ⁴ Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. ⁵ And passing the Jordan, they pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lies in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer. ⁶ After that they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtimhodshi, and they came to Danjaan and about to Zidon. ⁷ Then they came to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and of the Canaanites, and they went out towards the Negev from Judah, even to Beersheba. ⁸ So when they had gone through all the land, they returned to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. ⁹ And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king, and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

¹ ¶ And Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel. ² And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. ³ And Joab answered, The LORD make his people a hundred times as many more as they are; but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s slaves? Why then does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guiltiness unto Israel? ⁴ Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore, Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem. ⁵ And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And they found in all Israel eleven times one hundred thousand men that drew sword, and of Judah four hundred seventy thousand men that drew sword.

¹ ¶ Now the sons of Israel after their number, who were chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in any matter of the courses, who came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, each course was of twenty-four thousand.

²³ But David did not number those twenty years old and under because the LORD had said he would multiply Israel like to the stars of the heavens. ²⁴ Joab, the son of Zeruiah, had begun to number, but he did not finish; and because of this, wrath fell upon Israel; and thus the number was not put in the account of the chronicles of King David.

³² And of the sons of Issachar, two hundred chief men, who had understanding of the times and were wise to know what Israel ought to do; and all their brethren followed their word.

²¹ And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.

³⁸ The sons of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; ³⁹ of Shupham, the family of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites. ⁴⁰ And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites; and of Naaman, the family of the Naamites. ⁴¹ These are the sons of Benjamin by their families: and those numbered were forty-five thousand six hundred.

¹⁰ The son of Jediael was Bilhan; and the sons of Bilhan: Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Chenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish, and Ahishahar. ¹¹ All these were sons of Jediael, by the heads of their fathers, mighty men of valour, seventeen thousand two hundred soldiers, fit to go out for war and battle.

¹ ¶ Now Benjamin begat Bela, his firstborn, Ashbel, the second, and Aharah, the third, ² Nohah, the fourth, and Rapha, the fifth. ³ And the sons of Bela were Addar, Gera, Abihud, ⁴ Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah, ⁵ Gera, Shephuphan, and Hiram. ⁶ And these are the sons of Ehud: these are the heads of the fathers who inhabited Geba, and they were removed to Manahath, ⁷ That is, Naaman, Ahiah, and Gera; he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud. ⁸ And Shaharaim begat sons in the fields of Moab after he had sent away Hushim and Baara, his wives. ⁹ And he begat of Hodesh, his wife, Jobab, Zibia, Mesha, Malcham, ¹⁰ Jeuz, Shachia, and Mirma. These are his sons, heads of the fathers. ¹¹ And of Hushim he begat Abitub and Elpaal. ¹² The sons of Elpaal: Eber, Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod, with the towns thereof. ¹³ Beriah also and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath, ¹⁴ and Ahio, Shashak, Jeremoth, ¹⁵ Zebadiah, Arad, Ader, ¹⁶ Michael, Ispah, and Joha, sons of Beriah, ¹⁷ and Zebadiah, Meshullam, Hezeki, Heber; ¹⁸ Ishmerai, Jezliah, and Jobab, sons of Elpaal. ¹⁹ And Jakim, Zichri, Zabdi, ²⁰ Elienai, Zilthai, Eliel, ²¹ Adaiah, Beraiah, and Shimrath, the sons of Shimhi, ²² and Ishpan, Heber, Eliel, ²³ Abdon, Zichri, Hanan, ²⁴ Hananiah, Elam, Antothijah; ²⁵ Iphedeiah, and Penuel, sons of Shashak, ²⁶ and Shamsherai, Shehariah, Athaliah; ²⁷ and Jaresiah, Eliah, and Zichri, the sons of Jeroham. ²⁸ These were heads of the fathers, by their generations, chief men who dwelt in Jerusalem. ²⁹ And at Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon; whose wife’s name was Maachah, ³⁰ and his firstborn son, Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Nadab, ³¹ Gedor, Ahio, and Zacher. ³² And Mikloth begat Shimeah. And these also dwelt with their brethren in Jerusalem, next to them. ³³ ¶ And Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal. ³⁴ And the son of Jonathan was Meribbaal; and Meribbaal begat Micah. ³⁵ The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tarea, and Ahaz. ³⁶ And Ahaz begat Jehoadah; and Jehoadah begat Alemeth and Azmaveth and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza, ³⁷ and Moza begat Binea; Rapha was his son, Eleasah, his son, Azel, his son. ³⁸ And Azel had six sons, whose names are these: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. ³⁹ And the sons of Eshek, his brother: Ulam, his firstborn, Jehush, the second, and Eliphelet, the third. ⁴⁰ And the sons of Ulam were mighty men of valour, expert archers who had many sons, and sons’ sons, one hundred and fifty. All these were of the sons of Benjamin.

¹⁷ of Benjamin, Eliada, a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; ¹⁸ after him, Jehozabad and with him one hundred and eighty thousand ready and prepared for the war.

¹⁵ But when the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a saviour, Ehud, the son of Gera, a son of Jemini, {Benjamin} a man, who had his right hand impeded, and by him the sons of Israel sent a present unto Eglon, the king of Moab. ¹⁶ But Ehud had made himself a two-edged sword of a cubit length, and he girded it under his clothing upon his right thigh. ¹⁷ And he brought the present unto Eglon, king of Moab, and Eglon was a very fat man. ¹⁸ And when he had offered the present, he sent away the people that had brought the present. ¹⁹ But he, himself turned again from the graven images that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret word for thee, O king, who then said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. ²⁰ And Ehud came unto him, and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a word from God unto thee. Then he arose out of his seat. ²¹ But Ehud put forth his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into Eglon’s belly; ²² in such a manner that the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly, and the excrement came out. ²³ Then Ehud went forth through the porch and shut the doors of the parlour upon him and locked them. ²⁴ When he was gone out, his slaves came; and when they saw that the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Peradventure he covers his feet in his summer chamber. ²⁵ And having waited until they were confounded and he had not opened the doors of the parlour; therefore, they took a key and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. ²⁶ But while they had waited, Ehud escaped and passed beyond the graven images and escaped unto Seirath. ²⁷ And as he entered in, he blew the shofar in the mountain of Ephraim, and the sons of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them. ²⁸ Then he said unto them, Follow after me, for the LORD has delivered your enemies, the Moabites, into your hands. And they went down after him and took the fords of the Jordan towards Moab and did not let anyone pass. ²⁹ And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all fat, and all men of war, and there escaped not a man. ³⁰ So Moab was subjected that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.

¹³ And he had many works in the cities of Judah and men of war, mighty men of valour, in Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And these are the numbers of them according to the houses of their fathers: In Judah, princes of thousands; the prince Adnah and with him three hundred thousand mighty men of valour; ¹⁵ and after him, Prince Jehohanan and with him two hundred and eighty thousand; ¹⁶ after him, Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour; ¹⁷ of Benjamin, Eliada, a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; ¹⁸ after him, Jehozabad and with him one hundred and eighty thousand ready and prepared for the war. ¹⁹ These were servants of the king, besides those whom the king had put in the fenced cities throughout all Judah.

³⁸ The sons of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; ³⁹ of Shupham, the family of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites.

¹⁵ And Machir took wives of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister’s name was Maachah, and the name of the second was Zelophehad. And Zelophehad had daughters.

³ And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her. ⁴ And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Jacob went in unto her. ⁵ And Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son unto Jacob. ⁶ And Rachel said, God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son. Therefore she called his name Dan. ⁷ And Bilhah Rachel’s maid conceived again and gave birth to a second son unto Jacob. ⁸ And Rachel said, With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed; and she called his name Naphtali.

²² And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These are the sons of Bilhah, who Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she gave birth to these unto Jacob; in all seven souls.

⁴⁸ Of the sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites; ⁴⁹ of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim’s sons unto the third generation; the sons also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.

²⁹ The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir begat Gilead; of Gilead comes the family of the Gileadites. ³⁰ These are the sons of Gilead: of Jeezer, the family of the Jeezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites; ³¹ of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites; ³² of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites. ³³ And Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, had no sons, but daughters; and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ³⁴ These are the families of Manasseh, and those numbered of them, fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

¹ ¶ Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh, the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah.

³⁰ But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. ³¹ And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD has said unto thy slaves, so will we do. ³² We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance on this side of the Jordan shall be ours. ³³ Thus Moses gave unto the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and unto half the tribe of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with its cities and borders, even the cities of the country round about. ³⁴ And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer ³⁵ and Atroth-shophan and Jaazer and Jogbehah ³⁶ and Bethnimrah and Bethharan, fenced cities, and also folds for sheep. ³⁷ And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim ³⁸ and Nebo and Baalmeon (their names being changed) and Shibmah and gave other names unto the cities which they built. ³⁹ And the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, went to Gilead and took it and dispossessed the Amorite who was in it. ⁴⁰ And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir, the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein. ⁴¹ Jair, the son of Manasseh also went and took the small towns thereof and called them Havothjair. ⁴² Likewise Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah, after his own name.

¹³ And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan (fertile ground), being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh: all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants. ¹⁴ Jair, the son of Manasseh, took all the country of Argob unto the border of Geshuri and Maachathi and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day. ¹⁵ And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

³¹ And half of Gilead and Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were given to the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, even to one half of the sons of Machir, according to their families.

¹ ¶ There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph. Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead, who was a man of war, had Gilead and Bashan. ² There was also a lot for the rest of the sons of Manasseh by their families: for the sons of Abiezer and for the sons of Helek and for the sons of Asriel and for the sons of Shechem, and for the sons of Hepher and for the sons of Shemida: these were the male sons of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, by their families. ³ But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters, and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

¹⁴ Out of Ephraim came his root against Amalek; after thee, came Benjamin, against thy peoples; out of Machir came down princes; and from Zebulun, those that handle the pen of the writer.

²¹ And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old, and she gave birth to Segub unto him. ²² And Segub begat Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. ²³ And Geshur and Aram took the cities of Jair from them, with Kenath and its towns, even sixty cities. All these were of the sons of Machir, the father of Gilead.

³³ And Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, had no sons, but daughters; and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

¹ ¶ Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh, the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah. ² And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar, the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, saying, ³ Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of those that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but died in his own sin, and had no sons. ⁴ Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family because he has no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father. ⁵ And Moses brought their cause before the LORD. ⁶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, ⁷ The daughters of Zelophehad speak right; thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren, and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them. ⁸ And thou shalt speak unto the sons of Israel, saying, If a man dies and has no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. ⁹ And if he has no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren. ¹⁰ And if he has no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren. ¹¹ And if his father has no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his lineage, and he shall inherit it; and it shall be unto the sons of Israel a law of rights, as the LORD commanded Moses.

¹ ¶ And the princes of the fathers of the families of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the princes, the heads of the fathers of the sons of Israel, ² and they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the sons of Israel; and my lord was also commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad, our brother unto his daughters. ³ And if they become married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, then their inheritance shall be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe unto which they are received; so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance. ⁴ And when the jubilee of the sons of Israel shall come, then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe unto which they are received; so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers. ⁵ ¶ Then Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph has spoken well. ⁶ This is the thing which the LORD commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry as they desire; but they shall marry only within the family of the tribe of their father ⁷ so that the inheritance of the sons of Israel shall not be passed from tribe to tribe; for each one of the sons of Israel shall cleave to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. ⁸ And any daughter, that possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the sons of Israel, shall marry one of the family of the tribe of her father so that each man of the sons of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers. ⁹ So that the inheritance shall not change from one tribe to another tribe, each one of the tribes of the sons of Israel shall cleave to his own inheritance. ¹⁰ As the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad. ¹¹ And thus Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, married the sons of their uncles. ¹² They were women of the family of the sons of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

¹¹ Then the LORD sent Jerubbaal and Bedan and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelt safe.

³⁰ These are the sons of Gilead: of Jeezer, the family of the Jeezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites;

¹¹ ¶ And the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah that pertained unto Joash, the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD and called it The LORD is the Peace, {YHWH-shalom}, unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

³⁴ And the Spirit of the LORD clothed himself in Gideon, who when he had blown the shofar, Abiezer joined with him.

² And he replied unto them, What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

³⁵ These are the sons of Ephraim by their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthalhites; of Becher, the family of the Bachrites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. ³⁶ And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.

³⁴ Then Jacob rent his clothes and put sackcloth upon his loins and mourned for his son many days.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

⁵ shall not my house be so with God, although all my saving health and my desire shall not be produced yet? For he has made an everlasting covenant with me, ordered in all things, and it shall be kept;

¹⁰ And the LORD discomfited them before Israel and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them along the way that goes up to Bethhoron and smote them to Azekah and unto Makkedah.

³ and turns to descend to the westward sea to the border of Japhleti until the border of Bethhoron the lower, and to Gezer, and comes out at the sea.

⁵ ¶ And this was the border of the sons of Ephraim according to their families; this was the border of their inheritance on the east side from Atarothaddar unto Bethhoron the upper;

¹⁷ And Solomon built Gezer and Bethhoron, the lower,

⁵ Likewise, he rebuilt Bethhoron the upper and Bethhoron the lower, fenced cities with walls, gates, and bars;

⁹ And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. ¹⁰ So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. ¹¹ And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; but when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. ¹² And Moses’ hands were heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side and the other on the other side; thus his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. ¹³ And Joshua disabled Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. ¹⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in the book and tell Joshua that I must utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

¹³ And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua, and Moses went up into the mount of God.

¹⁷ And Joshua, hearing the noise of the people as they shouted, said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

²⁸ Then Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.

⁸ Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea, the son of Nun.

¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.

⁶ And Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, who were of those that had spied out the land, rent their clothes;

¹⁸ And the LORD said unto Moses, Take Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay thine hand upon him

²³ And he gave Joshua, the son of Nun, a charge and said, Be strong and of a good courage for thou shalt bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore unto them, and I will be with thee.

⁴⁵ which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus {Joshua in Heb.} into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers unto the days of David,

⁸ For if Jesus {Joshua in Heb.} had given them rest, then he would not afterward have spoken of another day.

¹⁹ And he called the name of that place Bethel, since the name of that city was called Luz at first.

² and from Bethel going to Luz and passing the border of Archi in Ataroth, ³ and turns to descend to the westward sea to the border of Japhleti until the border of Bethhoron the lower, and to Gezer, and comes out at the sea.

²² And also those of the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.

⁶⁶ And the residue of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities with their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷ And they gave unto them, of the cities of refuge, Shechem in Mount Ephraim with her suburbs; they gave also Gezer with her suburbs,

¹ ¶ And the lot of the sons of Joseph fell from the Jordan of Jericho unto the water of Jericho towards the east to the wilderness that goes up from Jericho to Mount Bethel, ² and from Bethel going to Luz and passing the border of Archi in Ataroth, ³ and turns to descend to the westward sea to the border of Japhleti until the border of Bethhoron the lower, and to Gezer, and comes out at the sea. ⁴ So the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance. ⁵ ¶ And this was the border of the sons of Ephraim according to their families; this was the border of their inheritance on the east side from Atarothaddar unto Bethhoron the upper; ⁶ and this border comes out to the sea and to Michmethah on the north side; and this border goes around eastward unto Taanathshiloh and from here passes on the east to Janohah; ⁷ and from Janohah it goes down to Ataroth and to Naarath, and touches in Jericho and comes out at the Jordan. ⁸ And from Tappuah this border turns towards the westward sea at the river Kanah and comes out at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim by their families. ⁹ There were also cities separated for the sons of Ephraim among the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages. ¹⁰ And they did not drive out the Canaanite that dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanite remained in the midst of Ephraim unto this day and served under tribute.

⁷ ¶ And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, which is before Shechem; and this border goes along on the right hand to the inhabitants of Entappuah. ⁸ Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah; but the Tappuah next to the border of Manasseh belongs to the sons of Ephraim; ⁹ And this border descends to the river Kanah towards the Negev of the river. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh; and the border of Manasseh is from the north side of the same river, and it comes out at the sea. ¹⁰ Ephraim towards the Negev and Manasseh to the north and the sea is his border; and they meet with Asher on the side of the north and with Issachar to the east. ¹¹ And Manasseh also had in Issachar and in Asher Bethshean and her towns and Ibleam and her towns and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, three provinces.

²² And also those of the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them. ²³ And those of the house of Joseph put spies in Bethel (Now the name of the city before was Luz). ²⁴ And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will show thee mercy. ²⁵ And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man go and all his family. ²⁶ And the man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and called the name of it Luz, which is its name unto this day. ²⁷ Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and its towns nor Taanach and its towns nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanite desired to dwell in that land. ²⁸ And it came to pass when Israel was strong that they put the Canaanites under tribute but did not utterly drive them out. ²⁹ Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanite that dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanite dwelt in Gezer among them.

¹⁹ The kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan fought in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.

¹⁰ And they put his weapons in the house of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

¹² Baana, the son of Ahilud; to him pertained Taanach and Megiddo and all Bethshean, which is by Zartanah beneath Jezreel, from Bethshean to Abelmeholah, even unto the place that is beyond Jokneam;

¹⁵ ¶ And this is the account of the levy which King Solomon raised to build the house of the LORD and his own house and Millo and the wall of Jerusalem and Hazor and Megiddo and Gezer.

²⁷ But when Ahaziah, the king of Judah, saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him and said, Smite him also in the chariot. And they did so at the ascent to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo and died there.

²⁹ In his days Pharaohnechoh, king of Egypt, went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates; and King Josiah went against him; but as soon as he saw him, he slew him at Megiddo.

²² Nevertheless, Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and did not hearken unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight him in the valley of Megiddo.

¹¹ In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

¹⁶ And he gathered them together into the place which in Hebrew is called, Armageddon.

¹⁷ And the sons of Asher: Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.

⁴⁴ The sons of Asher after their families: of Jimna, the family of the Jimnites; of Jesui, the family of the Jesuites; of Beriah, the family of the Beriites. ⁴⁵ Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites. ⁴⁶ And the name of the daughter of Asher was Sarah.
