²⁹ And Jesus responded unto him, The principal of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one; ³⁰ and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy thought and with all thy strength: this is the principal commandment. ³¹ And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

¹³ Those on the rock are those that when they hear, receive the word with joy, but these have no root, who for a while believe and in time of temptation fall away. ¹⁴ And that which fell among thorns are those who when they have heard go forth and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life and bring no fruit to perfection. ¹⁵ But that on the good ground are those who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it and bring forth fruit with patience.

²⁷ And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy understanding, and thy neighbour as thyself.

³² but I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

⁴ and patience, experience; and experience, hope; ⁵ and the hope shall not be ashamed, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.

²⁴ For in hope we are saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for what a man sees, he does not wait for. ²⁵ But if we wait for that which we do not see, with patience we wait for it.

¹³ ¶ And believing, the God of hope fills you with all joy and peace that ye may abound in hope by the virtue of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁴ If the work of anyone abides which he has built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

¹ ¶ Now as concerning things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but charity edifies.

³ But if anyone loves God, the same is known of him.

¹ ¶ Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. ² And though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. ³ And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned and have not charity, it profits me nothing. ⁴ ¶ Charity suffers long and is benign; charity envies not; charity does nothing without due reason, is not puffed up, ⁵ is not injurious, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil, ⁶ rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; ⁷ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. ⁸ ¶ Charity is never lost, but prophecies shall come to an end, tongues shall cease, and knowledge shall come to an end.

¹ ¶ Follow after charity and earnestly pursue spiritual gifts, but above all, that ye may prophesy.

¹⁴ Let all your things be done with charity.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive according to that which they have done in the body, good or evil.

¹⁵ And that he died for all that those who live should not live from now on unto themselves, but unto him who died and rose again for them.

⁶ For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision avails anything nor uncircumcision, but faith which works by charity.

¹³ ¶ For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only do not use liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by charity serve one another. ¹⁴ For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ¹⁵ But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye are not consumed one of another. ¹⁶ This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. ¹⁷ For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. ¹⁸ But if ye are led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. ¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. ²² But the fruit of the Spirit is this: Charity, joy, peace, tolerance, gentleness, goodness, faith,

⁹ ¶ And this I pray that your charity may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all perception,

⁵ for the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens, of which ye have already heard by the word of the truth of the gospel,

²⁷ to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery in the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory,

¹⁴ And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfection.

⁸ But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and charity, and for a helmet, the hope of saving health.

⁵ ¶ Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned:

⁷ For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of strength and of love and of temperance.

¹¹ But we desire that each one of you show the same diligence until the end for the fulfillment of your hope,

¹⁹ which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters even into that which is within the veil,

³⁵ Do not lose, therefore, this your confidence, which has great recompense of reward;

³⁹ But we are not of those who draw back unto perdition, but faithful unto the saving of the soul.

²¹ who by him do believe God, who raised him up from the dead and has given him glory: that your faith and hope might be in God.

¹⁰ He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him.

¹⁴ I have written unto you, fathers, that ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, that ye are strong and the word of God abides in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

²⁴ Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. For if that which ye have heard from the beginning shall abide in you, ye also shall continue to abide in the Son and in the Father.

³ And every one that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.

⁹ Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

⁷ ¶ Beloved, let us love one another, for charity is of God. Anyone that loves is born of God and knows God. ⁸ He that does not love does not know God, for God is charity. ⁹ In this was the charity of God demonstrated in us, in that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. ¹⁰ In this does the charity consist, not because we had loved God, but because he loved us and has sent his Son to be the reconciliation for our sins. ¹¹ Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. ¹² No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and his charity is completed in us. ¹³ In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us, in that he has given us of his Spirit. ¹⁴ ¶ And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. ¹⁵ Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. ¹⁶ And we have known and believed the charity that God has in us. God is charity, and he that abides in charity abides in God, and God in him. ¹⁷ ¶ In this the charity with us is made perfect, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, that as he is, so are we in this world. ¹⁸ In charity there is no fear; but charity that is perfect casts out fear; because fear has torment; from which he that fears is not complete in charity.

¹ ¶ Whosoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and anyone that loves him that begat also loves him that is born of him. ² In this we know that we love the sons of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. ³ For this is the charity of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous. ⁴ For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. ⁵ Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

⁴ I have rejoiced greatly, for I have found of thy sons that they walk in the truth, as we have received the commandment from the Father. ⁵ ¶ And now I beseech thee, lady, (not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning) that we love one another. ⁶ And this is charity, that we walk after his commandment. And this is the commandment, That ye walk in him, as ye have heard from the beginning.
