¹ ¶ And it came to pass when he had finished speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. ² And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. ³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul. ⁴ And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him and gave it to David and his garments, even to his sword and to his bow and to his girdle. ⁵ And David went out wherever Saul sent him and behaved himself prudently, and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s slaves. ⁶ ¶ And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music. ⁷ And the women sang as they played and said, Saul has slain his thousands and David his ten thousands. ⁸ And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him, and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands; and what can he have more but the kingdom? ⁹ And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. ¹⁰ And it came to pass on the next day that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house, and David played with his hand as at other times, and there was a spear in Saul’s hand. ¹¹ And Saul cast the spear, saying, I will smite David to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice. ¹² ¶ But Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him and had departed from Saul. ¹³ Therefore, Saul removed him from him and made him captain over a thousand, and he went out and came in before the people. ¹⁴ And David behaved himself prudently in all his ways, and the LORD was with him. ¹⁵ Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved himself very prudently, he was afraid of him. ¹⁶ But all Israel and Judah loved David because he went out and came in before them. ¹⁷ And Saul said to David, Behold I will give thee my elder daughter Merab to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’s battles. For Saul said to himself, My hand shall not be against him, but the hand of the Philistines shall be against him. ¹⁸ And David said unto Saul, Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel that I should be son-in-law to the king? ¹⁹ And it came to pass at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David that she was given unto Adriel, the Meholathite, to wife. ²⁰ But Michal, Saul’s other daughter, loved David, and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. ²¹ And Saul said, I will give her to him that she may be a snare to him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore, Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law with the other one. ²² And Saul commanded his slaves, saying, Speak with David secretly and say, Behold, the king has delight in thee, and all his slaves love thee; now, therefore, be the king’s son-in-law. ²³ And Saul’s slaves spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man and lightly esteemed? ²⁴ And the slaves of Saul told him, saying, David spoke these words. ²⁵ And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The desire of the king is not in any dowry, but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. For Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. ²⁶ And when his slaves told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law, and the days were not expired. ²⁷ Therefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men, and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them all to the king that he might be the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal, his daughter, to wife. ²⁸ But Saul, seeing and knowing that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved him, ²⁹ was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually. ³⁰ Then the princes of the Philistines went forth, and it came to pass after they went forth that David behaved himself more prudently than all the slaves of Saul so that his name was much set by.

³⁰ Now therefore when I come to thy slave my father, and the lad is not with us, seeing that his soul is bound up in the lad’s soul,

⁶ ¶ If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son or thy daughter or the wife of thy bosom or thy friend who is as thine own soul should entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou nor thy fathers have known,

¹¹ So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

¹ ¶ Now it came to pass upon a day that Jonathan, the son of Saul, said unto the young man that bore his armour, Come and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side. But he did not tell his father. ² And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron, and the people that were with him were about six hundred men; ³ and Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’s priest in Shiloh, was wearing the ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone. ⁴ And between the passages by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez and the name of the other Seneh. ⁵ The forefront of the one was situated northward over against Michmash and the other towards the Negev over against Gibeah. ⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour, Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised; peradventure the LORD will work for us, for it is not difficult for the LORD to save by many or by few. ⁷ And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thy heart; go. Behold, I am with thee according to thy will. ⁸ Then Jonathan said, Behold, we will go over unto these men, and we will show ourselves unto them. ⁹ If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you, then we will stand still in our place and will not go up unto them. ¹⁰ But if they say thus, Come up unto us, then we will go up, for the LORD has delivered them into our hand, and this shall be a sign unto us. ¹¹ And both of them showed themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves. ¹² And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. Then Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel. ¹³ And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet and his armourbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan, and his armourbearer slew after him. ¹⁴ And that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armourbearer made was about twenty men within as it were a half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

⁴⁵ Then the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has wrought this great saving health in Israel? No, in no wise: as the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has wrought with God this day. So the people rescued {Heb. ransomed} Jonathan that he did not die.

³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul.

² But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David, and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul, my father, seeks to kill thee: now, therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning and abide in a secret place and hide thyself.

¹⁷ And Jonathan swore unto David again because he loved him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

¹⁷ And David went out to meet them and answered and said unto them, If you are come peaceably unto me to help me, my heart shall be knit unto you; but if you are come to betray me to my enemies, seeing there is no violence in my hands, let the God of our fathers look thereon and rebuke it.

¹¹ Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth; firm up my heart that I might fear thy name.

²⁴ ¶ The man that has friends must show himself to be a friend, and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

² that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in charity and in all the riches of the fulfilled understanding to know the mystery of the God and Father and of the Christ;

²¹ And David came to Saul and stood before him; and he loved him greatly, and he became his armourbearer. ²² And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he has found favour in my sight. ²³ And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed and was better, and the evil spirit departed from him.

¹⁵ But David had gone and returned from being with Saul to feed his father’s sheep in Bethlehem.

⁸ Therefore, thou shalt deal in mercy with thy slave, for thou hast brought thy slave into a covenant of the LORD with thee; notwithstanding, if there is iniquity in me, slay me thyself, for why should thou bring me to thy father? ⁹ ¶ And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee, for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would I not be obliged to show it to thee? ¹⁰ Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? Or what if thy father answers thee roughly? ¹¹ And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And both of them went out into the field. ¹² Then Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I shall have asked my father tomorrow at this time or after tomorrow and, behold, if there is good toward David and I then do not send unto thee and show it to thee, ¹³ the LORD do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do thee evil, then I will show it to thee and send thee away that thou may go in peace; and the LORD be with thee as he has been with my father. ¹⁴ And if I live, thou shalt show me the mercy of the LORD, but if I am dead, ¹⁵ thou shalt not cut off thy mercy from my house for ever. When the LORD has cut off one by one the enemies of David from the face of the earth, remove even Jonathan from thy house if I fail thee and require it at the hand of David’s enemies. ¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David. ¹⁷ And Jonathan swore unto David again because he loved him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

⁴² And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed, and Jonathan entered into the city.

¹⁸ And the two made a covenant before the LORD, and David abode in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.

¹ ¶ And David said, Is anyone left of the house of Saul that I may show him mercy for Jonathan’s sake? ² And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy slave is he. ³ And the king said, Is there no one left of the house of Saul that I may show the mercy of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, There remains a son of Jonathan, who is lame on his feet.

⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

⁴² Then Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand and put it upon Joseph’s hand and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck;

⁸ let the royal apparel be brought which the king wears, and the horse that the king rides upon, and the royal crown which is set upon his head; ⁹ and let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that he may clothe the man whom the king delights to honour and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honour.

¹⁰ ¶ I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of saving health; he has surrounded me with the robe of righteousness; as a bridegroom he has arrayed me, and as a bride made up of his jewels.

²² But the father said to his slaves, Bring forth the best robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet

²¹ For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

⁷ but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, made in the likeness of men, ⁸ and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}.

² But the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prospered man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. ³ And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

²³ The prince of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

² Saul chose three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in Mount Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and of the rest of the people he sent each one to his tent.

⁵² And there was intense war against the Philistines all the days of Saul, and when Saul saw any strong man or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

¹⁴ And David behaved himself prudently in all his ways, and the LORD was with him. ¹⁵ Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved himself very prudently, he was afraid of him.

³⁰ Then the princes of the Philistines went forth, and it came to pass after they went forth that David behaved himself more prudently than all the slaves of Saul so that his name was much set by.

³ And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

¹⁶ ¶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore prudent as serpents and innocent as doves.

¹⁰ and delivered him out of all his afflictions and gave him grace and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁷ Therefore, be ye not unwise, but understanding of what the will of the Lord is.

⁵ ¶ Walk in wisdom towards outsiders, winning the occasion.

²⁰ And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

³⁴ And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

²⁵ The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; in between them were the virgins playing with timbrels.

¹¹ For the LORD has ransomed Jacob, and redeemed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he. ¹² Therefore they shall come and do praises in the height of Zion and shall run unto the goodness of the LORD, unto the bread, and unto the wine, and unto the oil, and unto the gain of the flock and of the herd and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. ¹³ Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

²¹ And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

¹¹ And the slaves of Achish said unto him, Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul has slain his thousands and David his ten thousands?

⁵ Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands and David his ten thousands?

⁷ ¶ Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and lift yourselves up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in. ⁸ Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass that the people complained in an evil manner in the ears of the LORD, and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burnt among them and consumed in the uttermost parts of the camp.

³⁴ Then Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I did not know that thou didst stand in the way against me; now therefore, if it displease thee, I will return.

¹⁴ But now thy kingdom shall not stand; the LORD has sought a man after his own heart unto whom the LORD has commanded that he be captain over his people because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

²⁸ And Samuel said unto him, The LORD has rent the kingdom of Israel from thee today and has given it to a neighbour of thine that is better than thou.

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the land, thou shalt not be established nor thy kingdom. Therefore, now send and bring him unto me, for he shall surely die.

²² And King Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag, the Shunammite, for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also, for he is my elder brother and he also has Abiathar, the priest, and Joab, the son of Zeruiah.

⁵ And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not kneel or worship before him, then Haman was filled with wrath.

¹⁰ ¶ Pride shall certainly give birth to contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is impetuous, but who is able to stand before envy?

⁴ ¶ Again, I considered all travail and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit. ⁵ Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?

⁵ but he did not look upon Cain and his present. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. ⁶ ¶ Then the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

² And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.

¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am good?

²² the thefts, the covetousness, the wickedness, the deceit, the lasciviousness, the evil eye, the slander, the pride, the unwiseness:

²⁷ neither give place to the devil.

⁹ Complain not one against another, brethren, that ye not be condemned: behold, the judge stands before the door.

¹⁴ ¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. ¹⁵ And Saul’s slaves said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles thee. ¹⁶ Let our lord now command thy slaves, which are before thee, to seek out a man who is a cunning player on a harp, and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand and thou shalt have relief.

²³ And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed and was better, and the evil spirit departed from him.

⁹ And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand, and David played with his hand.

²³ And he went there to Naioth in Ramah, and the Spirit of God came upon him also, and he went on and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. ²⁴ And he stripped off his clothes also and prophesied before Samuel in like manner and lay down naked all that day and all that night. From here it was said, Is Saul also among the prophets?

¹⁹ Now, therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his slave. If the LORD has stirred thee up against me, let him smell the fragrance of an offering, but if they were the sons of men, let them be cursed before the LORD, for they have driven me out this day from joining myself to the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

²⁹ And when midday was past, even so they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, and there was neither voice nor anyone that answered nor anyone that heard.

¹² And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramothgilead and be prospered, for the LORD shall deliver it into the king’s hand.

²⁰ And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab that he may go up and fall at Ramothgilead? And one said in this manner and another said in that manner. ²¹ And there came forth a spirit and stood before the LORD and said, I will persuade him. ²² And the LORD said unto him, In what manner? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also; go forth and do so. ²³ Now, therefore, behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD has decreed evil concerning thee.

² Thus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel spoken, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. ³ Within two full years I will bring again into this place all the vessels of the LORD’s house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried them to Babylon: ⁴ and I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, that went into Babylon, saith the LORD; for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.

¹¹ And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus hath the LORD said: Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the Gentiles within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

² And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of the hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no longer be remembered; and I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness to be cut off out of the land. ³ And it shall come to pass, that when anyone else shall prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD; and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesies. ⁴ And it shall come to pass in that time, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision when he has prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: ⁵ but he shall say, I am no prophet, I am a husbandman of the land; for I learned this from man from my youth.

¹⁶ ¶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a Pythian spirit met us, which brought her masters much gain by divination:

¹¹ Therefore, for this cause, God shall send the operation of error in them, that they should believe the lie;

⁹ And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand, and David played with his hand. ¹⁰ And Saul sought to smite David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, who smote the spear into the wall; and David fled and escaped that night.

³³ And Saul cast a spear at him to smite him whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

³² Tzaddi The wicked watches the righteous and seeks to slay him. ³³ The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the slaves of the LORD, and their justice from me, said the LORD.

³⁰ But he, passing through the midst of them, went away.

⁵⁹ Then they took up stones to cast at him, but Jesus concealed himself and went out of the temple, and going through the midst of them, went away.

³⁹ ¶ Therefore they sought again to take him, but he escaped out of their hand

⁴ And Samuel did as the LORD said and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming and said, Comest thou peaceably?

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. ¹⁴ ¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

¹⁸ Then one of the servants answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem, that is cunning in playing and a mighty valiant man and a man of war and prudent in speech and handsome, and the LORD is with him.

¹⁵ Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved himself very prudently, he was afraid of him.

²⁰ But Michal, Saul’s other daughter, loved David, and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

²⁹ was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

¹³ And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread and a sword and hast enquired of God for him that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

¹⁵ ¶ And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed, for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me and no longer answers me neither by prophets nor by dreams; therefore, I have called thee that thou may make known unto me what I shall do.

³ God is known in her palaces for a refuge. ⁴ For, behold, the kings were assembled, they passed by together. ⁵ They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled and hasted away. ⁶ Fear took hold upon them there and pain as of a woman in travail.

¹¹ Cast me not away from thy presence and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

⁵ They were there in great fear where no fear was; for God has scattered the bones of him that encamps against thee: thou hast put them to shame because God has despised them.

¹² Though they bring up their sons, yet I will bereave them, that there shall not be a man left; yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!

⁴¹ Then he shall also say unto those who shall be on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels;

²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and respected him; and when he heard him, he did many things and heard him gladly.

³⁷ Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them, for they were taken with great fear; and he went up into the ship and returned back again.

⁹ And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him

²⁵ And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled and answered, Go away for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

¹⁶ Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, ¹⁷ who may go out before them, and who may go in before them, and who may lead them out and who may bring them in that the congregation of the LORD not be as sheep without a shepherd.

¹² And he will appoint captains over thousands and captains over fifties and will set them to plough his ground and to reap his harvest and to make his weapons of war and the munitions of his chariots.

¹⁶ But all Israel and Judah loved David because he went out and came in before them. ¹⁷ And Saul said to David, Behold I will give thee my elder daughter Merab to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’s battles. For Saul said to himself, My hand shall not be against him, but the hand of the Philistines shall be against him.

²⁵ And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The desire of the king is not in any dowry, but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. For Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

⁷ then Saul said unto his slaves that stood about him, Hear now, ye sons of Jemini, will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds

² And even yesterday and the day before yesterday, when Saul was king over us, it was thou that didst lead out and bring in Israel; and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel.

⁸ The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

²⁷ So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame went throughout all the land.

⁷ And let it be when these signs are come unto thee that thou do according as thou shalt find at hand, for God is with thee.

²³ Behold, a virgin shall conceive and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God With Us.

²⁰ teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, behold, I am with you always even unto the end of the age. Amen.

¹⁰ For I am with thee, and no one shall be able to hurt thee, for I have many people in this city.

⁵ Teth A good man has mercy and lends; Jod He will govern his affairs with good judgment.

⁴ Then the presidents and governors looked for occasions against Daniel on behalf of the kingdom, but they could find no occasion or fault because he was faithful, and no vice nor fault was found in him. ⁵ Then these men said, We shall never find any occasion against this Daniel except we find it against him in the law of his God.

⁵ And if any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask of God (who gives abundantly to all, and without reproach), and it shall be given them.

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

¹⁷ who may go out before them, and who may go in before them, and who may lead them out and who may bring them in that the congregation of the LORD not be as sheep without a shepherd.

⁵ And David went out wherever Saul sent him and behaved himself prudently, and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s slaves.

⁷ And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy slave king instead of David my father; and I am but a tender young man; I do not know how to go out or come in.

⁴⁸ and could not find what they might do, for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

¹⁹ And the princes of the priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him, for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them; but they feared the people.

¹⁴ Therefore it is said in the book of the battles of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon

²⁰ Then Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will prepare yourselves to go before the LORD to the war

²⁷ but thy slaves, each one armed for war, will pass before the LORD to battle, as our lord saith.

²⁹ And Moses said unto them, If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben will pass the Jordan with you, each one armed to battle, before the LORD, after the land shall be subdued before you, then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession.

⁷ The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.

²⁵ And each one of the men of Israel were saying, Have ye seen this man that is come up? He is come up to dishonour Israel. It shall be that the king will enrich the man who overcomes him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.

⁴⁷ And all this congregation shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands.

²¹ And Saul said, I will give her to him that she may be a snare to him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore, Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law with the other one.

²⁸ I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thy handmaid, for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil has not been found in thee all thy days.

¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die.

⁹ Why, therefore, hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? Thou hast killed Uriah, the Hittite, with the sword and hast taken his wife to be thy wife and hast slain him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.

² Each one speaks vanity with his neighbour: they speak with flattering lips and with a double heart.

²¹ The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

¹¹ ¶ Then Moses said unto God, Who am I that I should go unto Pharaoh and that I should bring forth the sons of Israel out of Egypt?

¹⁰ Then she fell on her face and bowed herself to the ground and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes that thou should acknowledge me, seeing I am a stranger?

²¹ And Saul answered and said, Peradventure am I not of Jemini, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And is my family not the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why, therefore, dost thou speak so to me?

²³ And Saul’s slaves spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?

¹⁸ ¶ Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, O Lord GOD, Who am I and what is my house that thou hast brought me thus far?

³³ ¶ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, and before honour is humility.

¹² ¶ Before being broken, the heart of man is haughty, and before coming into honour, comes being brought to humility.

⁶ Then I said, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I do not know how to speak: for I am a child.

²² But the three hundred blew the shofarot, and the LORD set each man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the camp; and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath and to the border of Abelmeholah unto Tabbath.

²⁰ But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had fed him before.

⁸ But the king took the two sons of Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, whom she gave birth unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth, and five sons of Michal, the daughter of Saul, whom she had given birth unto Adriel, the son of Barzillai, the Meholathite;

²⁸ But Saul, seeing and knowing that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved him,

⁷ Then Pharaoh’s slaves said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God; knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

¹⁷ And Saul said to David, Behold I will give thee my elder daughter Merab to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’s battles. For Saul said to himself, My hand shall not be against him, but the hand of the Philistines shall be against him.

²⁶ And when his slaves told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law, and the days were not expired.

¹¹ ¶ Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house to watch him and to slay him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life tonight, tomorrow thou shalt be dead. ¹² So Michal let David down through a window, and he went and fled and escaped.

¹⁴ Behold, he travails with iniquity and has conceived of his own work and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁵ He made a pit and deepened it and shall fall into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ His work shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.

¹² ¶ Those that seek after my life lay snares for me, and those that seek my hurt speak calamities and imagine deceits all the day long.

²⁴ ¶ He that hates dissembles with his lips and lays up deceit within him; ²⁵ when he speaks fair, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ Even though his hatred is covered up in the desert, his wickedness shall be showed before the whole congregation.

⁵ ¶ The man that flatters his neighbour spreads a net for his feet.

²⁶ For among my people were found wicked men: they lay in wait as he that sets snares; they set a trap of perdition to catch men.

⁸ Their tongue is as a sharp arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth but in heart he lays in wait.

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him. Fear not; have I not commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant. ²⁹ And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and they all got upon their mules and fled.

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David the slave of the LORD. ¶ The rebellion of the wicked saith to my heart that there is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes until his iniquity is found to be hateful. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise and to do good.

¹² ¶ Of the ruler who hearkens unto the lying word, all his ministers are evil.

¹⁴¹ ¶ I am small and despised; yet I have not forgotten thy precepts.

²⁰ ¶ The poor is hated even of his own neighbour, but many are those who love the rich.

⁶ ¶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince, but every man is a friend to him that gives. ⁷ All the brethren of the poor hate him; how much more shall his friends separate themselves from him? He shall seek their friendship and not find it.

¹⁵ now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no one remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then I said, Wisdom is better than strength: even though the poor man’s knowledge is despised, and his words are not heard.

¹ ¶ Behold, what charity the Father has given us, that we should be called the sons of God; therefore the world does not know us, because it does not know him.

¹¹ And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a token of the covenant between me and you. ¹² And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male in your generations, he that is born in the house or bought with money of any stranger, who is not of thy seed. ¹³ He that is born in thy house and he that is bought with thy money must needs be circumcised; and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. ¹⁴ And the uncircumcised male whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has annulled my covenant.

¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel, thy younger daughter.

¹² Ask me for as much dowry and gift as ye desire, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me; but give me the damsel to wife.

¹⁶ ¶ If a man should entice a virgin that is not betrothed and lie with her, he shall surely endow her and take her to be his wife. ¹⁷ If her father utterly refuses to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

³ And Joshua made himself sharp knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

²⁴ ¶ But the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eats any food until evening that I may be avenged on my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

²⁶ Then David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that overcomes this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should dishonour the armies of the living God?

³⁶ Whether it was a lion or a bear thy slave would kill it, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has dishonoured the armies of the living God.

⁸ For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and now their souls are bitter, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field. And thy father is a man of war and will not lodge with the people. ⁹ Behold, he is hid now in some pit or in some other place, and if some of thy men are overthrown at the beginning, whoever hears of it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. ¹⁰ Thus even the valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt, for all Israel knows that thy father is a mighty man and those who are with him are valiant men. ¹¹ Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude, and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

¹⁹ And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and slew thirty men of them and taking their spoil, he gave the changes of garments to those who had explained the enigma. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.

¹³ Therefore, Saul removed him from him and made him captain over a thousand, and he went out and came in before the people.

¹⁴ After this, David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

²⁷ And Laban said unto him, Let me now find grace in thine eyes, I have learned by experience that the LORD has blessed me for thy sake.

⁸ And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words. ⁹ And he dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brethren, saying, Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars made obeisance to me. ¹⁰ And he told it to his father and to his brethren; and his father reprehended him and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? ¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the word.

³ And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

²⁰ And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel shall be firm and stable in thy hand.

²⁵ Then Saul said to David, Blessed art thou, my son David; without a doubt thou shalt do great things and prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

⁹ Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but do lie; behold, I will constrain them to come and worship before thy feet and to know that I have loved thee.

⁴ And Abel, he also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD looked upon Abel and his present, ⁵ but he did not look upon Cain and his present. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. ⁶ ¶ Then the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? ⁷ If thou doest good, it shall certainly be accepted; and if thou doest not good, sin lies at the door. And his desire shall be unto thee, but thou must rule over him. ⁸ ¶ And Cain talked with Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him.

¹² ¶ But Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him and had departed from Saul.

¹² Zain The wicked plots against the just and gnashes upon him with his teeth. ¹³ The Lord shall laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming. ¹⁴ He The wicked have drawn out the sword and have bent their bow to cast down the poor and needy and to slay such as are of upright conversation.

⁵³ So that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.

¹⁹ Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well; the demons also believe and tremble.

¹² Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. ¹³ Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hates you. ¹⁴ ¶ We know that we are passed from death unto life, in that we love the brethren. He that does not love his brother abides in death. ¹⁵ Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

³⁰ Therefore, the LORD God of Israel said, I had said indeed that thy house and the house of thy father should walk before me for ever, but now the LORD said, It shall never be; for those that honor me I will honor, and those that lightly esteem me shall be vile.

²¹ ¶ Then Saul said, I have sinned; return, my son David; for I will do no more harm unto thee because my life was precious in thine eyes today. Behold, I have played the fool and have erred exceedingly.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab and his slaves with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

¹³ And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and besought him and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life and the life of these fifty thy slaves, be precious in thy sight.

¹⁵ Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his merciful ones.

⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers, for thy testimonies have been my meditation.

²⁰ And in all matters of wisdom and intelligence, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

¹⁵ See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

⁴ ¶ coming unto whom (is the living Stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious),

⁷ Unto you, therefore, who believe he is precious; but unto those who are disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
