¹ ¶ And David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? What is my iniquity or what is my sin before thy father that he seeks my life? ² And he said unto him, No, in no wise; thou shalt not die. Behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it me, and why should my father hide this thing from me? It shall not be so. ³ And David swore moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knows that I have found grace in thine eyes, and he saith in himself, Let Jonathan not know this lest he be grieved; but truly as the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, there is but a step between me and death. ⁴ Then Jonathan said unto David, Whatever thy soul saith, I will do it for thee. ⁵ And David replied unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at food, but thou shalt let me go and hide myself in the field until the evening of the third day. ⁶ If thy father at all misses me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem, his city, for all those of his lineage have an anniversary sacrifice. ⁷ If he should say, It is well; thy slave shall have peace; but if he is very wroth, then be sure that the evil is determined in him. ⁸ Therefore, thou shalt deal in mercy with thy slave, for thou hast brought thy slave into a covenant of the LORD with thee; notwithstanding, if there is iniquity in me, slay me thyself, for why should thou bring me to thy father? ⁹ ¶ And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee, for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would I not be obliged to show it to thee? ¹⁰ Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? Or what if thy father answers thee roughly? ¹¹ And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And both of them went out into the field. ¹² Then Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I shall have asked my father tomorrow at this time or after tomorrow and, behold, if there is good toward David and I then do not send unto thee and show it to thee, ¹³ the LORD do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do thee evil, then I will show it to thee and send thee away that thou may go in peace; and the LORD be with thee as he has been with my father. ¹⁴ And if I live, thou shalt show me the mercy of the LORD, but if I am dead, ¹⁵ thou shalt not cut off thy mercy from my house for ever. When the LORD has cut off one by one the enemies of David from the face of the earth, remove even Jonathan from thy house if I fail thee and require it at the hand of David’s enemies. ¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David. ¹⁷ And Jonathan swore unto David again because he loved him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul. ¹⁸ Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new moon, and thou shalt be missed because thy seat will be empty. ¹⁹ And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself on the day of the work and shalt remain by the stone Ezel; ²⁰ and I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof as though I shot at a mark. ²¹ And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee; take them, then come thou, for there is peace unto thee and no hurt, as the LORD lives. ²² But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee, then go away, for the LORD has sent thee away. ²³ And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, let the LORD be between thee and me for ever. ²⁴ ¶ So David hid himself in the field, and when the new moon was come, the king sat down to eat bread. ²⁵ And the king sat upon his seat as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall; and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty. ²⁶ Nevertheless, Saul said nothing that day, for he thought, Something has befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean. ²⁷ And it came to pass on the next day, which was the second day of the new moon, that David’s place was empty, and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Why did not the son of Jesse come to food, neither yesterday nor today? ²⁸ And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. ²⁹ And he said, Let me go, I pray thee, for those of our lineage have a sacrifice in the city, and my brother, he has commanded me to be there, and now, if I have found grace in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he has not come unto the king’s table. ³⁰ Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do I not know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion and unto the confusion of thy mother’s shame? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the land, thou shalt not be established nor thy kingdom. Therefore, now send and bring him unto me, for he shall surely die. ³² And Jonathan answered Saul his father and said unto him, Why shall he be slain? What has he done? ³³ And Saul cast a spear at him to smite him whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David. ³⁴ So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the new moon, for he was grieved for David and because his father had done him shame. ³⁵ ¶ And it came to pass in the morning that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him. ³⁶ And he said unto his lad, Run and find the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. ³⁷ And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee? ³⁸ And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows and came to his master. ³⁹ But the lad did not understand anything; only Jonathan and David understood the matter. ⁴⁰ And Jonathan gave his weapons unto his lad and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city. ⁴¹ And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the Negev and fell on his face to the ground and bowed himself three times, and they kissed one another and wept one with another, although David exceeded. ⁴² And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed, and Jonathan entered into the city.

³ Behold, here I am; witness against me before the LORD and before his anointed. If I have taken anyone’s ox or if I have taken anyone’s ass or if I have defrauded anyone or if I have oppressed anyone or if I have received a bribe {Heb. ransom} from anyone to blind my eyes, I will restore it you.

¹⁹ And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah. ²⁰ And Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. ²¹ And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. ²² Then he also went to Ramah and came to a great well that is in Sechu, and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah. ²³ And he went there to Naioth in Ramah, and the Spirit of God came upon him also, and he went on and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. ²⁴ And he stripped off his clothes also and prophesied before Samuel in like manner and lay down naked all that day and all that night. From here it was said, Is Saul also among the prophets?

²⁶ And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David made haste to get away from the presence of Saul, for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them. ²⁷ But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Make haste and come, for the Philistines have invaded the land. ²⁸ Saul returned, therefore, from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. For this reason they called that place Selahammahlekoth. {Heb. the rock of divisions}

⁹ ¶ And David said to Saul, Why hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeks thy hurt?

¹¹ Moreover, my father, see; see the skirt of thy robe is even in my hand, for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and did not kill thee, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou doest hunt my life to take it.

¹⁷ And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I, for thou hast repaid me with good, whereas I have repaid thee with evil.

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this: if there is iniquity in my hands, ⁴ if I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me, then let my persecutor escape without retribution. ⁵ Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; let him tread down my life upon the earth and lay my honour in the dust. Selah.

²⁰ ¶ The LORD will reward me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he shall recompense me. ²¹ Because I have kept the ways of the LORD and did not become wicked departing in apostasy from my God. ²² For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me. ²³ I was perfect before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.

⁶ ¶ Blessed be the LORD, who did not give us as a prey to their teeth. ⁷ Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers; the snare has broken, and we are escaped. ⁸ Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made the heaven and the earth.

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished;

²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God;

⁷ And they said unto him, Why saith my lord these words? In no wise should thy slaves do according to this thing.

²⁹ Let it never happen that we should rebel against the LORD or that we should turn today from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for presents, or for sacrifices, in addition to the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.

¹⁶ Then the people answered and said, May it never happen that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods.

¹⁵ Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

⁴⁵ Then the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has wrought this great saving health in Israel? No, in no wise: as the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has wrought with God this day. So the people rescued {Heb. ransomed} Jonathan that he did not die.

¹² Then Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I shall have asked my father tomorrow at this time or after tomorrow and, behold, if there is good toward David and I then do not send unto thee and show it to thee,

⁶ ¶ Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened; burnt offering and sin offering thou hast not required.

⁵ The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

¹⁶ He shall come and destroy these husbandmen and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, May it not be!

¹⁵ From now on I do not call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his lord does; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

⁸ For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

¹³ Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God and serve him and shalt swear by his name.

⁶⁶ and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night and shalt have no assurance of thy life.

²⁶ And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

⁵⁵ And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.

²⁶ Now, therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, seeing the LORD has withheld thee from coming to shed blood and from avenging thyself with thy own hand, now let thy enemies and those that seek evil to my lord be as Nabal.

¹ ¶ And David said in his heart, In the end I shall be killed some day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should escape once and for all into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more within the borders of Israel; so shall I escape out of his hand.

²¹ And Ittai answered the king and said, As the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, for life or for death, wherever my lord the king shall be, there also will thy slave be.

² And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD has sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.

⁴ And Elijah said unto him again, Elisha, tarry here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.

⁶ And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan. And he said, As the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, I will not leave thee. And thus the two went on.

³ The sorrows of death compassed me and the pains of Sheol found me; I encountered trouble and sorrow.

² And thou shalt swear, The LORD lives, in truth, in judgment, and in righteous ness; and the Gentiles shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD lives, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

³⁰ And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour? ³¹ I die daily to stay in the glory of having taught you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death and does deliver; in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

¹⁶ For men verily swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all controversy.

¹⁰ Also in the day of your gladness and in your solemn days and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace, that they may be to you for a memorial before your God; I AM your God.

¹¹ And in the beginnings of your months ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the LORD: two young bullocks, and one ram, seven lambs of the first year without spot;

² But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David, and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul, my father, seeks to kill thee: now, therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning and abide in a secret place and hide thyself.

⁶ If thy father at all misses me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem, his city, for all those of his lineage have an anniversary sacrifice.

¹⁹ And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself on the day of the work and shalt remain by the stone Ezel;

²³ And he said, Why must thou go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said, Peace.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it, neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

³ Blow the shofar in the new moon in the time appointed on our solemn feast day.

³ ¶ A prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and receive hurt.

⁵⁹ Then they took up stones to cast at him, but Jesus concealed himself and went out of the temple, and going through the midst of them, went away.

¹⁴ And then immediately the brethren sent Paul to go away towards the sea, but Silas and Timothy abode there still.

¹⁶ ¶ Let no one therefore judge you in food or in drink or in respect of a feast day or of the new moon or of the sabbath days,

⁵ ¶ But ye shall seek the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there for his habitation, and thou shalt go there.

¹² And they answered them and said, He is; behold, he is before you; make haste now, for he came today to the city, for there is a sacrifice of the people today in the high place.

² And Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul understands it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take a heifer with thee and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. ³ And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do, and thou shalt anoint unto me the one whom I name unto thee. ⁴ And Samuel did as the LORD said and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming and said, Comest thou peaceably? ⁵ And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.

⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy slave Jesse of Bethlehem.

⁴² Has not the scripture said, That the Christ comes of the seed of David and out of the town of Bethlehem where David was?

²³ And the saying seemed good unto me, and I took twelve men of you, one of each tribe.

⁹ ¶ And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee, for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would I not be obliged to show it to thee?

¹⁷ Now, therefore, know and consider what thou must do, for evil is determined against our master and against all his household, for he is such a son of Belial that no one can speak to him.

⁴ And this word seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and of all the elders of Israel.

⁷ ¶ And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden, and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther, the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

⁴⁹ And now if ye will deal in mercy and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

²⁹ And the time drew nigh that Israel must die; and he called his son Joseph and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh and deal with me in mercy and truth; do not bury me, I pray thee, in Egypt;

¹⁴ And the men answered her, Our life for yours if ye do not declare this our business. And it shall be when the LORD has given us the land, that we will deal with thee according to mercy and truth.

²² The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knows and let Israel also know; if it is in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD (save us not this day)

⁸ And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to thy mother’s house; the LORD deal with you in mercy as ye have dealt with the dead and with me.

³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul.

¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David.

¹⁸ And the two made a covenant before the LORD, and David abode in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.

³² And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I have sent for thee, saying, Come here, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Why have I come from Geshur? It would have been better for me to have been there still. Now, therefore, let me see the king’s face; and if there is any iniquity in me, let him kill me.

¹⁷ And David went out to meet them and answered and said unto them, If you are come peaceably unto me to help me, my heart shall be knit unto you; but if you are come to betray me to my enemies, seeing there is no violence in my hands, let the God of our fathers look thereon and rebuke it.

¹¹ I said in my haste, All men are liars.

³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; bind them about thy neck; write them upon the tablet of thine heart:

¹¹ For if I am an offender or have committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die; but if there are none of these things of which these accuse me, no one may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.

³⁸ And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows and came to his master.

⁴² And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed, and Jonathan entered into the city.

⁷ ¶ And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, but made himself strange unto them and spoke roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Where have you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

³⁰ The man, who is the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us for spies of the country.

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David’s slaves and said, Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many slaves nowadays that break from their masters.

¹⁴ And one of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to bless our master, and he railed on them.

¹³ And the king answered the people roughly and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him

²³ ¶ The poor uses intreaties, but the rich answer roughly.

⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?

³ Thou hast proved my heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast refined me and hast found no iniquity; that which I thought did not pass through my mouth.

¹ To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David. ¶ O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me. ² Thou knowest my sitting down and my rising up, thou dost understand my thoughts from afar. ³ Thou hast girded my walk and my rest, and hast prepared all my ways. ⁴ For the word is not even upon my tongue, and, behold, O LORD, thou dost know it altogether.

⁵ ¶ Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of intelligence will draw it out.

² ¶ It is the glory of God to conceal the word, but the honour of kings is to search out the word. ³ For the height of the heavens and depth of the earth and for the heart of kings, there is no investigation.

⁵ No one shall be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.

¹⁷ Where thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried; let the LORD do so unto me and let him give unto me that only death shall part thee and me.

¹⁷ And he said, What is the word that the LORD has spoken unto thee? I pray thee do not hide it from me. God do so to thee and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the word that he spoke unto thee.

⁷ And let it be when these signs are come unto thee that thou do according as thou shalt find at hand, for God is with thee.

⁶ And the Spirit of God prospered Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. ⁷ And he took a yoke of oxen and hewed them in pieces and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whoever does not come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. ⁸ And when he numbered them in Bezek, the sons of Israel were three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand. ⁹ And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have salvation. And the messengers came and declared it to the men of Jabesh, and they were glad. ¹⁰ Therefore the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seems good unto you. ¹¹ And it was so on the next day that Saul put the people in order in three companies, and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day, and it came to pass that those who remained were scattered so that two of them were not left together. ¹² ¶ Then the people said unto Samuel, Who were those that said, Shall Saul reign over us? Bring the men, that we may put them to death. ¹³ And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day, for today the LORD has wrought salvation in Israel.

⁴⁷ ¶ So Saul took the kingdom over Israel and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab and against the sons of Ammon and against Edom and against the kings of Zobah and against the Philistines; and wherever he turned himself, he troubled them.

³⁷ David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

¹² ¶ But Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him and had departed from Saul.

²² Let God do so and more also unto the enemies of David if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that piss against the wall.

³⁵ And when all the people came to cause David to eat food while it was yet day, David swore, saying, So do God to me, and more also if I taste bread or anything else until the sun is down.

¹⁵ but my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I took away from before thee.

¹³ Likewise say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone and of my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the place of Joab.

² Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if by tomorrow at this time I have not made thy person as one of them.

¹⁰ And Benhadad sent unto him again and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, that the dust of Samaria shall not be enough for the open hands of all the people that follow me.

¹¹ Now, my son, the LORD be with thee, and be thou prospered and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he has said of thee.

¹⁶ Of the gold, the silver, and the brass and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and go to work, and the LORD be with thee.

²⁰ teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, behold, I am with you always even unto the end of the age. Amen.

⁹ Those things, which ye have both learned and received and heard and seen in me, do, and the God of peace shall be with you.

³ And the king said, Is there no one left of the house of Saul that I may show the mercy of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, There remains a son of Jonathan, who is lame on his feet.

¹ ¶ Be ye therefore imitators of God, as dear children ² and walk in charity even as the Christ also has loved us and has given himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

²¹ Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.

¹ ¶ And David said, Is anyone left of the house of Saul that I may show him mercy for Jonathan’s sake? ² And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy slave is he. ³ And the king said, Is there no one left of the house of Saul that I may show the mercy of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, There remains a son of Jonathan, who is lame on his feet. ⁴ And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar. ⁵ Then King David sent and took him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar. ⁶ Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face and worshipped. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy slave! ⁷ And David said unto him, Fear not; for I will surely show thee mercy for Jonathan, thy father’s sake, and will restore unto thee all the land of Saul, thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

¹⁸ In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed shall I give this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons, and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

⁷ For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him and beheaded him and took his head and walked all night through the plain. ⁸ And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thy enemy, who sought thy life, and the LORD has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul and of his seed.

⁸ But the king took the two sons of Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, whom she gave birth unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth, and five sons of Michal, the daughter of Saul, whom she had given birth unto Adriel, the son of Barzillai, the Meholathite;

⁶ ¶ If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son or thy daughter or the wife of thy bosom or thy friend who is as thine own soul should entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou nor thy fathers have known,

¹ ¶ And it came to pass when he had finished speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

²⁴ ¶ The man that has friends must show himself to be a friend, and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

⁵ And David replied unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at food, but thou shalt let me go and hide myself in the field until the evening of the third day.

²⁵ And the king sat upon his seat as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall; and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.

² And if they should say, The LORD lives; surely they swear falsely.

¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear in my name, saying, The LORD lives; as they taught my people to swear by Baal then they shall be prospered in the midst of my people.

¹⁴ Those that swear by the guiltiness of Samaria and say, As thy God of Dan lives; and, As the way of Beersheba lives, even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

³⁷ And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

⁵ Then Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee; I have given my maid into thy bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes; the LORD judge between me and thee.

⁵⁰ If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness between me and thee.

¹⁴ And if I live, thou shalt show me the mercy of the LORD, but if I am dead, ¹⁵ thou shalt not cut off thy mercy from my house for ever. When the LORD has cut off one by one the enemies of David from the face of the earth, remove even Jonathan from thy house if I fail thee and require it at the hand of David’s enemies.

¹⁶ ¶ But unto the wicked God saith, What part hast thou to declare my statutes or that thou should take my covenant in thy mouth? ¹⁷ Seeing thou dost hate chastening and dost cast my words behind thee. ¹⁸ When thou didst see a thief, then thou didst consent with him and hast been partaker with adulterers. ¹⁹ Thou didst give thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frames deceit. ²⁰ Thou didst sit and speak against thy brother; thou didst slander thine own mother’s son. ²¹ These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou didst think that I was altogether such a one as thyself, but I will reprove thee and set them in order before thine eyes.

¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

¹⁷ Better is a dinner of vegetables where love is than a fatted calf and hatred therewith.

¹ ¶ Better is a dry morsel in peace than the house of contention full of sacrifices for a feast.

³ ¶ To do righteousness and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

²⁷ ¶ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination; how much more, when he brings it with lewdness?

¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? shall the LORD say. I am full of the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; and I do not delight in the blood of bullocks or of lambs or of he goats. ¹² When ye come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; the incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot stand them; iniquity and the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. ¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; likewise, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood.

⁶ And when ye ate, and when ye drank, did ye not eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

²⁸ ¶ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment, and it was early; and they themselves did not go into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover.

²⁰ And she said, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep and said, This time I will go out like before and escape; not knowing that the LORD had departed from him.

¹⁸ Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new moon, and thou shalt be missed because thy seat will be empty.

²⁰ And the person that eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace, which is of the LORD, being unclean, that person shall be cut off from his people. ²¹ Moreover the person that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man or any unclean beast or any abominable unclean thing and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace, which is of the LORD, that person shall be cut off from his people.

²⁴ And for these ye shall be unclean: whoever touches their carcase shall be unclean until the evening.

²⁷ And of all the animals that go on all four, any that walk upon their paws are unclean unto you; whoever touches their carcase shall be unclean until the evening.

³¹ These are unclean to you among all the animals; whoever touches them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening.

⁴⁰ and he that eats of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; likewise he that bears the carcase of it shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.

⁵ And whoever touches his bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening.

¹⁶ And the man, when his seed shall go forth from him, then shall wash all his flesh in water and be unclean until the evening. ¹⁷ And every garment and every skin upon which the seed of a man has come shall be washed with water and be unclean until the evening.

¹⁹ ¶ And when the woman has an issue of blood and her issue is in her flesh, she shall be put apart seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening. ²⁰ And everything that she lies upon in her separation shall be unclean; everything also that she sits upon shall be unclean. ²¹ And whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself with water and be unclean until the evening.

¹⁶ And whoever touches one that is slain with a sword in the open fields or a dead body or a human bone or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

⁵ And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.

¹¹ And Saul cast the spear, saying, I will smite David to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

⁹ And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand, and David played with his hand. ¹⁰ And Saul sought to smite David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, who smote the spear into the wall; and David fled and escaped that night.

¹⁵ And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed that I may slay him.

⁷ then Saul said unto his slaves that stood about him, Hear now, ye sons of Jemini, will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds ⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me or shows unto me that my son has stirred up my slave against me, to lie in wait against me, as at this day? ⁹ Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was set over the slaves of Saul, answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub.

¹³ And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread and a sword and hast enquired of God for him that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? ¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, And who is so faithful among all thy slaves as David, the king’s son-in-law, who goes at thy bidding and is honourable in thy house?

¹ ¶ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: ² And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD,

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

⁴ ¶ coming unto whom (is the living Stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious),

²⁸ And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard when he spoke unto the men, and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why didst thou come down here? And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the malice of thy heart, for thou art come down that thou might see the battle.

² It is certain that wrath kills the foolish man, and envy consumes the covetous one.

²⁹ ¶ He that is slow to wrath is of great intelligence, but he that is short of spirit exalts folly.

² ¶ The tongue of the wise shall adorn wisdom, but the mouth of fools shall speak foolishness.

¹² ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

¹⁹ ¶ A man of great wrath shall suffer the consequences, for even if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

²⁴ ¶ Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who deals in proud wrath.

²⁸ ¶ The man whose spirit has no restraint is like a city that is broken down and without walls.

³ ¶ A stone is heavy and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

²² but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother out of control shall be in danger of the judgment, and whosoever shall insult his brother shall be in danger of the council, but whosoever shall say, Thou art impious, shall be in danger of hell.

³¹ Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and evil speaking be taken away from you, with all malice,

⁴ And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; ²⁰ for the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God.

⁶ And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, As the LORD lives, he shall not be slain.

¹¹ ¶ Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house to watch him and to slay him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life tonight, tomorrow thou shalt be dead. ¹² So Michal let David down through a window, and he went and fled and escaped. ¹³ Then Michal took an image and laid it in the bed and put a pillow of goats’ hair at his head and covered it with a cloth. ¹⁴ And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick. ¹⁵ And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed that I may slay him.

⁸ Therefore, thou shalt deal in mercy with thy slave, for thou hast brought thy slave into a covenant of the LORD with thee; notwithstanding, if there is iniquity in me, slay me thyself, for why should thou bring me to thy father?

¹⁶ This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD lives, ye are worthy to die because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is and the cruse of water that was at his head.

²⁸ For all of my father’s house were worthy of death before my lord the king; yet thou didst set thy slave among those that eat at thy own table. What righteousness, therefore, have I yet to cry any more unto the king?

¹¹ Let the sighing of the prisoners come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve those that are appointed to die

³⁶ ¶ Then Jacob was wroth and contended with Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? What is my sin that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?

⁵ for he put his soul in his hand and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel. Thou didst see it and rejoice. Why then wilt thou sin against innocent blood to slay David without a cause?

¹⁰ And Saul sought to smite David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, who smote the spear into the wall; and David fled and escaped that night. ¹¹ ¶ Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house to watch him and to slay him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life tonight, tomorrow thou shalt be dead.

⁷ If he should say, It is well; thy slave shall have peace; but if he is very wroth, then be sure that the evil is determined in him.

²⁴ ¶ Do not meddle with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

¹¹ ¶ If thou forbear to deliver those that are drawn unto death and those that are ready to be slain, ¹² if thou should say, Behold, we knew it not; shall not he that weighs the hearts understand it? and he that keeps thy soul, does he not know it? and shall he not render to every man according to his works?

⁸ Open thy mouth for those who cannot speak in the judgment of all the sons of death. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and destitute.

⁹ Do not be hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all; and also that the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who shall know it?

²³ And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

²² And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil has he done? I have found no cause of death in him; I will therefore chastise him and let him go.

⁵¹ Does our law judge any man before it hears him and knows what he does?

¹⁰ And Saul sought to smite David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, who smote the spear into the wall; and David fled and escaped that night.

²⁰ For surely there is not a just man upon earth that in doing good does not sin.

⁵ And looking round about on them with anger, being grieved for the blindness of their hearts, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out and his hand was restored whole as the other.

²⁶ Be ye angry and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath,

⁵ So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah, but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

²⁰ and I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof as though I shot at a mark. ²¹ And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee; take them, then come thou, for there is peace unto thee and no hurt, as the LORD lives. ²² But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee, then go away, for the LORD has sent thee away.

⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then I would fly away and be at rest. ⁷ Behold, then I would flee far away and dwell in the wilderness. Selah. ⁸ I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. ⁹ ¶ Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. ⁵ Escape as a roe from the hand of the hunter and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

¹⁶ then let those who are in Judaea flee into the mountains; ¹⁷ let him who is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house, ¹⁸ neither let him who is in the field return back to take his clothes.

¹⁴ ¶ But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation (spoken of by Daniel the prophet) standing where it ought not, he that reads, let him understand, then let those that are in Judaea flee to the mountains; ¹⁵ and let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house; ¹⁶ and let him that is in the field not turn back again even to take up his garment.

³¹ In that day, he who shall be upon the housetop and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away; and he that is in the field, let him likewise not turn back. ³² Remember Lot’s wife.

¹¹ And Jacob kissed Rachel and lifted up his voice and wept.

¹³ And it came to pass when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son that he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

²⁸ And they answered, Thy slave our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

¹⁵ Moreover he kissed all his brethren and wept upon them, and after that his brethren talked with him.

¹ ¶ Then Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it upon his head and kissed him and said, Is it not because the LORD has anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

²³ And when Abigail saw David, she hastened and lighted off the ass and fell before David on her face and bowed herself to the ground

⁶ Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face and worshipped. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy slave!

³⁹ And all the people went over the Jordan. And when the king had also come over, the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned unto his own place.

³⁷ Then they all wept sore and fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him,

²⁶ the LORD lift up his face upon thee, and place peace in thee.

¹⁷ Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

¹⁵ thou shalt not cut off thy mercy from my house for ever. When the LORD has cut off one by one the enemies of David from the face of the earth, remove even Jonathan from thy house if I fail thee and require it at the hand of David’s enemies.

²² But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee, then go away, for the LORD has sent thee away. ²³ And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, let the LORD be between thee and me for ever.

⁵⁰ And he said to the woman, Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.

³⁶ And the keeper of the prison made these words known unto Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore depart and go in peace.
