⁷ But if the ministry of death in the letter engraved in stones was glorious, so that the sons of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to fade away,

²¹ ¶ Then the LORD God made coats of skins for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

¹² ¶ Then the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount and wait there, and I will give thee tables of stone and the law and commandments which I have written to teach them.

¹⁸ And he gave unto Moses, when he finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, two tables of the testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

¹⁵ ¶ And Moses turned and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand; the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. ¹⁶ And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

¹⁹ And it came to pass as soon as he came near unto the camp and he saw the calf and the dances, anger caused Moses to wax hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mount.

¹ ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew two tables of stone like unto the first; and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou didst break.

²⁸ ¶ And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. ²⁹ And it came to pass, as Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, while he came down from the mount, that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone after he had talked with him. ³⁰ And when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come near him. ³¹ And Moses called them, and Aaron and all the princes of the congregation returned unto him, and Moses talked with them. ³² And afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. ³³ And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. ³⁴ But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would take the veil off until he came out. And as he came out, he would speak unto the sons of Israel that which he was commanded. ³⁵ And the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses that the skin of Moses’ face shone, and Moses would put the veil upon his face again until he would go in to speak with him.

⁸ And what nation is there so great that has statutes and rights so just as all this law, which I set before you this day?

¹³ And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, the ten words; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

²² These words the LORD spoke unto all your congregation in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice, and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone and delivered them unto me.

⁹ When I climbed up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, without eating bread or drinking water; ¹⁰ and the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God, and on them was written according to all the words which the LORD spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. ¹¹ And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

¹⁵ So I turned and came down from the mount with the two tables of the covenant in my two hands and the mount burned with fire,

¹ ¶ At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first and come up unto me into the mount and make thee an ark of wood, ² and I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou didst brake, and thou shalt put them in the ark. ³ And I made an ark of cedar wood and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in my hand. ⁴ And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten words which the LORD spoke unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them unto me.

¹³ Thou didst come down upon Mount Sinai and didst speak with them from heaven and didst give them right judgments and true laws, good statutes and commandments,

⁷ ¶ The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. ⁸ The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

⁹⁷ ¶ MEM. O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

¹²⁷ ¶ Therefore I have loved thy commandments above gold, yea, above fine gold. ¹²⁸ Therefore I have esteemed all thy precepts concerning all things to be right and I have hated every false way.

¹⁷⁴ I have longed for thy saving health, O LORD, and thy law is my delight.

²⁹ And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. ³⁰ And, behold, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah, ³¹ who appeared in majesty and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

¹⁵ Then all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

¹⁵ because the law works wrath; for where there is no law, there is no rebellion either.

¹⁰ And I found that the same commandment, which was unto life, was mortal unto me.

¹² So the law is truly holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. ¹³ Was then that which is good made death unto me? No, in no wise. But sin, to show itself sin by that which is good, worked death in me, making sin exceedingly sinful by the commandment. ¹⁴ ¶ For we now know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold unto subjection by sin.

²² For I delight with the law of God with the inward man,

⁴ For Christ is the end of the law, to give righteousness to every one that believes.

¹⁰ But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

³ Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

⁶ ¶ who also has made us able ministers of the new testament, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

⁹ For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, much more shall the ministry of righteousness abound in glory. ¹⁰ For even that which was so glorious had no glory in this respect, in comparison with the glory that excels. ¹¹ For if that which fades away was glorious, much more shall that which remains be glorious.

¹³ And not as Moses, who put a veil over his face, that the sons of Israel could not steadfastly look to the end of that glory which was to fade away: ¹⁴ (And thus their senses became hardened, for until this day remains the same veil not uncovered in the reading of the old testament, which veil is taken away in Christ.

⁴ which had a golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, in which was the golden urn that had the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the testament,
