²³ Then he went up from there unto Bethel, and as he was going up by the way, the young men {or servants} of the city came forth and mocked him, saying, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

⁹ ¶ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had born unto Abraham, mocking.

²⁸ And having taken counsel, the king made two calves of gold and said unto the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. ²⁹ And he set the one in Bethel and the other he put in Dan. ³⁰ And this became an occasion for sin, for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. ³¹ And he made a house of high places and made priests of the lowest of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi. ³² Then Jeroboam ordained a solemnity in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the solemnity that was celebrated in Judah; and he sacrificed upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made. He also ordered in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

¹¹ And it came to pass, as they still went on and talked, that, behold, a chariot of fire with horses of fire separated the two, and Elijah went up into heaven in a whirlwind.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

¹⁸ Even the young children despised me; as I arose, they spoke against me.

¹ ¶ But now those that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

⁸ They were sons of fools and men without names; they were lower than the earth. ⁹ And now I am their song, and I am their byword. ¹⁰ They abhor me, they distance themselves from me, and do not spare to spit in my face. ¹¹ Because God has loosed my cord and afflicted me, they have also gone out of control before my face. ¹² Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction. ¹³ They cast down my path, they took advantage of my calamity, against them there was no helper. ¹⁴ They came in as through a wide breach; they were stirred up because of my calamity. ¹⁵ ¶ They have loosed terrors upon me; they fought my will as the wind and my saving health as a cloud that passes. ¹⁶ And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me. ¹⁷ My bones pierce me in the night, and my sinews take no rest. ¹⁸ By the great force of my disease my garment is changed; it binds me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes. ²⁰ I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me; I present myself, and thou regardest me not. ²¹ Thou art become cruel to me; with the strength of thy hand thou dost hate me. ²² Thou didst lift me up and cause me to ride upon the wind, and didst dissolve my being. ²³ For I know that thou dost conduct me unto death and to the house appointed for all living. ²⁴ But he will not stretch out his hand against the grave; do those who are buried cry out when he destroys them? ²⁵ Did I not weep for the one that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy? ²⁶ When I expected good, then evil came unto me; and when I waited for light, there came darkness. ²⁷ My bowels boil and do not rest; the days of affliction came upon me. ²⁸ I went about darkened, but not by the sun; I stood up and cried out in the congregation. ²⁹ I have become a brother to dragons and a companion to owls. ³⁰ My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat. ³¹ My harp is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of those that weep.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; yea, the smiters gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they tore me apart and did not cease:

¹¹ ¶ Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work is pure and whether it is right.

⁶ ¶ Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.

¹⁵ ¶ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.

⁴ O sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, generation of evildoers, corrupt sons! They have forsaken the LORD; they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger; they have turned back.

⁵ And the people shall do violence, one against another, and each one against his neighbour; the child shall rise up against the ancient and the base against the honourable.

³ ¶ But come here, ye sons of the sorceress, generation of the adulterer and the whore. ⁴ Against whom do ye sport yourselves? Against whom do ye make a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? Are ye not rebellious sons, a lying seed of transgression,

¹⁸ The sons gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough to make cakes to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods that they may provoke me to anger.

¹⁵ Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah be guilty; and do not come unto Gilgal, neither go up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD lives,

⁵ The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn because of the calf, and the religious persons thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, which shall be made to vanish away.

¹⁵ So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness; in the morning the king of Israel shall utterly be cut off.

¹⁴ that in the day that I shall visit the rebellions of Israel upon him, I will also visit upon the altars of Bethel, and the horns of the altar shall be cut off and fall to the ground.

⁴ Go to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal increase the rebellion; and bring your sacrifices early in the morning and your tithes every three years:

⁵ but do not seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and do not pass to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

¹³ but do not prophesy any more in Bethel: for it is the king’s sanctuary, and the head of the kingdom.

²⁹ And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him and mocked him, saying, Receive joy, King of the Jews! ³⁰ And they spit upon him and took the reed and smote him on the head. ³¹ And after they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him and put his own raiment on him and led him away to crucify him.

⁴⁰ and saying, Thou that wouldst destroy the temple and build it in three days, save thyself. If thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}. ⁴¹ Likewise also the princes of the priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, ⁴² He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}, and we will believe him. ⁴³ He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him, for he said, I am the Son of God.

²⁹ But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

³⁶ and others experienced cruel mockings and scourgings, and added to this, bonds and imprisonment;
