¹ ¶ And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did with Sarah as he had spoken. ² For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the set time of which God had spoken to him. ³ And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. ⁴ And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old as God had commanded him. ⁵ And Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him. ⁶ Then Sarah said, God has made me to laugh so that all that hear will laugh with me. ⁷ And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? For I have born him a son in his old age. ⁸ And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great banquet the day that Isaac was weaned. ⁹ ¶ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had born unto Abraham, mocking. ¹⁰ Therefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. ¹¹ And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son. ¹² Then God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah has said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. ¹³ And also of the son of the bondwoman I will make a nation because he is thy seed. ¹⁴ ¶ So Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a bottle of water and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child and sent her away; and she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. ¹⁵ And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under a tree. ¹⁶ And she went and sat her down over against him a good way off as it were a bowshot; for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him and lifted up her voice and wept. ¹⁷ And God heard the voice of the lad, and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven and said unto her, What ails thee, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. ¹⁸ Arise, lift up the lad and hold him in thy hand, for I will make him a great nation. ¹⁹ And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the bottle with water and gave the lad drink. ²⁰ And God was with the lad, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness and became an archer. ²¹ And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him out of the land of Egypt. ²² ¶ And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phichol, the prince of his host, spoke unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest. ²³ Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son; but according to the mercy that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me and to the land in which thou hast sojourned. ²⁴ And Abraham said, I will swear. ²⁵ And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water which Abimelech’s slaves had violently taken away. ²⁶ And Abimelech said, I know not who has done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither have I heard of it, but today. ²⁷ And Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant. ²⁸ And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. ²⁹ And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves? ³⁰ And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand that they may be a witness unto me that I have dug this well. ³¹ Therefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they swore, both of them. ³² Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba; then Abimelech rose up and Phichol, the prince of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines. ³³ ¶ And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba and called there on the name of the LORD, the eternal God. ³⁴ And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines’ land many days.

¹⁶ And I will bless her and give thee a son also of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of Gentiles; kings of peoples shall be of her.

¹⁹ And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed, and thou shalt call his name Isaac (laughter); and I will confirm my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant and with his seed after him.

²¹ But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

¹⁰ Then he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, behold, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

¹⁴ Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

²⁴ And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land unto the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

¹⁶ ¶ Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you and seen that which is done to you in Egypt,

³¹ And the people believed; and hearing that the LORD had visited the sons of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed and worshipped.

⁵ Thou shalt not bow down to them nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons unto the third and fourth generation of those that hate me

⁶ ¶ Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, to return from the fields of Moab, for she had heard in the field of Moab how the LORD had visited his people to give them bread.

²¹ And the LORD visited Hannah so that she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

⁶ The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

⁴ Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou dost bear unto thy people; O visit me with thy saving health,

³⁵ The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

⁶⁸ Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and made redemption for his people

⁴⁴ and shall cast thee down to the ground and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

¹⁷ ¶ as it is written, As a father of many Gentiles have I placed thee before God, whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which are not as those that are. ¹⁸ Who believed to wait against all hope, that he might become the father of many Gentiles, according to that which had been spoken unto him, So shall thy seed be. ¹⁹ And he did not weaken in faith: he considered not his own body now dead when he was about one hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb; ²⁰ he doubted not the promise of God, with unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,

²³ But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman was born through the promise.

²⁸ So that we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

² for the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the times of the ages

¹⁶ And he said, At the appointed time, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, No, my lord, thou man of God, do not deceive thy handmaid. ¹⁷ But the woman conceived and gave birth to a son at the appointed time that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

²⁴ And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived and hid herself five months, saying, ²⁵ Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

³⁶ And, behold, thy relative Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

⁸ And he gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

⁹ For the word of the promise is this, At this time I will come, and Sara shall have a son.

²² For it is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

¹¹ By faith also Sara herself being sterile received strength to conceive seed and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she believed him to be faithful who had promised.

⁶ Then Sarah said, God has made me to laugh so that all that hear will laugh with me.

¹² Then God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah has said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

² And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou dost love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

³ And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the river and led him throughout all the land of Canaan and multiplied his generation and gave him Isaac.

² Abraham begat Isaac; Isaac begat Jacob; Jacob begat Judas and his brothers;

⁷ neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are all sons, but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

¹⁸ of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called,

¹⁰ This shall be my covenant, which ye shall keep between me and you and thy seed after thee: Every male among you shall be circumcised. ¹¹ And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a token of the covenant between me and you. ¹² And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male in your generations, he that is born in the house or bought with money of any stranger, who is not of thy seed.

⁴⁸ And if a stranger shall sojourn with thee and desire to make the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and make this sacrifice; and he shall be as one that is natural in the land, but no uncircumcised person shall eat of it.

³ And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

³² Keep thyself, and do all that I command you; thou shalt not add to it nor diminish from it.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.

⁵⁹ And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias after the name of his father.

²¹ ¶ And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which he was called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

²² Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. ²³ If a man on the sabbath day receives circumcision without the law of Moses being broken, are ye angry at me because I have made a man entirely whole on the sabbath day?

¹ ¶ And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me and be thou perfect.

¹⁷ Then Abraham fell upon his face and laughed and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him who is one hundred years old? and shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear?

¹⁹ And he did not weaken in faith: he considered not his own body now dead when he was about one hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb;

¹² Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? ¹³ Then the LORD said unto Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child when I am old? ¹⁴ Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. ¹⁵ Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, No, but thou didst laugh.

²⁶ And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

⁹ He makes the barren woman to keep house and to be a joyful mother of sons. Halelu-JAH.

² Then our mouth shall be filled with laughter and our tongue with singing; then they shall say among the Gentiles, The LORD has done great things with them.

¹⁵ Can a woman forget her sucking child that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Even though they may forget, I will not forget thee.

²¹ Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who has begotten me these, seeing I had lost my children and was desolate, a stranger removed from my land? and who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

¹ ¶ Rejoice, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud with joy, thou that didst not travail with child: for more shall be the sons of the desolate than the sons of the married wife, said the LORD.

¹⁴ And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

⁴⁶ Then Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, ⁴⁷ and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saving Health, ⁴⁸ for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden; for, behold, from now on all generations shall call me blessed. ⁴⁹ For he that is mighty has done great things unto me, and holy is his name. ⁵⁰ And his mercy is on those that fear him from generation to generation. ⁵¹ He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the humble. ⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. ⁵⁴ He has received his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy ⁵⁵ as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.

⁵⁸ And her neighbours and her relatives heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her.

²¹ The woman, when she is in travail, has pain, because her hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers the anguish no more, for joy that a man is born into the world. ²² And ye now therefore have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and no one shall take your joy from you.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those that rejoice and weep with those that weep.

²⁷ For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth into praise and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband. ²⁸ So that we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

¹¹ Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age, and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. ¹² Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

²³ Because there is no enchantment in Jacob, neither is there any divination in Israel. According to this time, it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What God has made!

³² Ask, therefore, now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other whether there has been any such thing as this great thing is, or has any other been heard like it? ³³ Have a people ever heard the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and lived? ³⁴ Or has God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs and by wonders and by war and by a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

⁸ ¶ Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord, neither is there any other who does thy works.

¹⁰ For thou art great and doest wondrous things; thou alone art God.

⁸ Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth bring forth in one day? Shall an entire nation be born at once? that Zion travailed, and shall bring forth her sons together?

¹⁰ To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} the manifold wisdom of God,

¹⁰ when he shall come to be glorified in his saints and to be admired in all those that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

³ And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him and entered into his house, and he made them a banquet and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

³⁰ And he made them a banquet, and they ate and drank.

²² So Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a banquet.

²⁰ ¶ And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a banquet unto all his slaves, and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his slaves.

¹⁰ ¶ So his father went down unto the woman; and Samson made a banquet there, for the young men used to do so.

¹² unto whom Samson said, I will now put forth an enigma unto you, which if ye can declare it and discover it to me within the seven days of the banquet, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty changes of garments.

²² But Hannah did not go up, for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him that he may be presented before the LORD and abide there for ever.

³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

²⁰ So Abner came to David to Hebron and twenty men with him. And David made a banquet for Abner and the men that were with him.

¹⁵ And when Solomon awoke, he beheld it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings and made a banquet for all his slaves.

³ In the third year of his reign, he made a banquet unto all his princes and his slaves, having before him the power of Persia and Media, the governors and princes of the provinces, ‘

² Rather I have quieted myself and caused my soul to become silent, that I might be as a child that is weaned of his mother, as one who is weaned from my own life.

⁸ ¶ And after she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived and bore a son.

¹ ¶ Now Sarai Abram’s wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

³ And Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar, her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. ⁴ ¶ And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. ⁵ Then Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee; I have given my maid into thy bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes; the LORD judge between me and thee. ⁶ But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleases thee. Then Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her face.

¹⁵ ¶ And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael.

²⁰ And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I shall bless him and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly; he shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

²³ Then he went up from there unto Bethel, and as he was going up by the way, the young men {or servants} of the city came forth and mocked him, saying, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. ²⁴ And he turned back and looked on them and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And two bears came forth out of the forest and tore apart forty-two young men of them.

¹⁰ So the posts passed from city to city through the land of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun, but they laughed them to scorn and mocked them.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

¹ ¶ But it came to pass that when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was wroth and took great indignation and mocked the Jews. ² And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? Is this to be permitted them? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish on time? Will they resurrect the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which were burned? ³ Now Tobiah, the Ammonite, was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox were to go up it, he would break down their stone wall. ⁴ Hear, O our God; for we are despised; and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of their captivity. ⁵ And do not cover their iniquity, nor let their sin be blotted out from before thee, for they have become angry against the builders.

¹ ¶ But now those that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

⁶ But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men and despised of the people.

¹⁰ It is as death in my bones when my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to those that are round about us. ¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the people.

¹¹ ¶ Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work is pure and whether it is right.

⁷ Zain Jerusalem remembered the days of her affliction and of her rebellions and of all her desirable things that she had in the times of old when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and no one helped her; the enemies saw her and mocked at her days of rest.

²⁹ But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

³⁶ and others experienced cruel mockings and scourgings, and added to this, bonds and imprisonment;

¹¹ And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.

¹⁰ And Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

⁶ But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

¹⁹ ¶ And these are the generations of Isaac, son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac;

⁶ And Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all the persons of his house and his cattle and all his beasts and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan, and went into another country from the face of his brother Jacob. ⁷ For their riches were more than that they might dwell together, and the land in which they were strangers could not bear them because of their livestock.

¹¹ But I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens. ¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹³ Then the king said to the slaves, Bind him hand and foot and take him away and cast him into the darkness outside; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

³⁵ And the slave does not abide in the house for ever, but the Son abides for ever.

¹⁸ For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

⁷ therefore, thou art no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

²² For it is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. ²³ But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman was born through the promise. ²⁴ Which things are an allegory; for these women are the two covenants: the one from the Mount Sinai, which begat unto slavery, which is Hagar. ²⁵ For this Hagar or Sinai is a mount in Arabia, which corresponds to the one that is now Jerusalem, which together with her children is in slavery. ²⁶ But the Jerusalem of above is free, which is the mother of us all. ²⁷ For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth into praise and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband. ²⁸ So that we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. ²⁹ But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. ³⁰ Nevertheless what does the scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. ³¹ So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

⁴ unto the incorruptible inheritance that cannot be defiled and that does not fade away, conserved in the heavens for you,

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us; but this happened that it might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

¹⁸ And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

¹ ¶ And it came to pass after these things that God proved Abraham and said unto him, Abraham; and he said, Behold, here I am. ² And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou dost love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

³³ Then the king was much moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept; and as he went, he said this: O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! I would rather have died instead of thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

³⁷ He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

¹¹ It is true that no chastening at present seems to be cause for joy, but rather for grief; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto those who are exercised by it.

⁷ And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee, for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me that I should not reign over them.

⁹ Now, therefore, hearken unto their voice; however first protest solemnly against them by declaring unto them the rights of the king that shall reign over them.

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

⁷ neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are all sons, but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. ⁸ That is, Those who are sons of the flesh, these are not the sons of God; but those who are sons of the promise are counted in the generation.

¹⁰ ¶ And the angel of the LORD also said unto her, I will multiply thy seed so exceedingly that it shall not be numbered for the multitude.

¹⁸ Arise, lift up the lad and hold him in thy hand, for I will make him a great nation.

¹² Now these are the generations of Ishmael, son of Abraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, gave birth unto Abraham: ¹³ And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their lineages: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth, and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, ¹⁴ Mishma, Dumah, Massa, ¹⁵ Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. ¹⁶ These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns and by their palaces; twelve princes according to their families. ¹⁷ And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred thirty-seven years; and Ishmael expired and died and was gathered unto his people. ¹⁸ And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria; and he fell in the presence of all his brethren.

⁷ ¶ And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

²⁷ ¶ And Abraham rose up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD.

³¹ Therefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they swore, both of them.

³³ ¶ And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba and called there on the name of the LORD, the eternal God.

³ ¶ And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his ass and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son, and cut the wood for the burnt offering and rose up and went unto the place of which God had told him.

¹⁹ So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

⁵⁴ ¶ And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and slept; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

³¹ And they rose up early in the morning and swore one to another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

³³ And he called it Shebah, therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.

¹⁵ And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

¹ ¶ And Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.

³ And when he saw that, he arose and departed to save his life and came to Beersheba, which is in Judah, and left his servant there.

⁴ They wandered lost in the wilderness, alone and out of the way; they found no city to dwell in.

⁶⁰ I made haste and did not delay to keep thy commandments.

¹⁴ ¶ He that blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

¹⁰ Whatever thy hand finds to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, where thou goest.

⁸ For the vines of Heshbon were cut off and the vines of Sibmah; the lords of the Gentiles have trodden down the offshoots thereof, which had come even unto Jazer and extended through the wilderness; they had gone over the sea.

²³ But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman was born through the promise. ²⁴ Which things are an allegory; for these women are the two covenants: the one from the Mount Sinai, which begat unto slavery, which is Hagar. ²⁵ For this Hagar or Sinai is a mount in Arabia, which corresponds to the one that is now Jerusalem, which together with her children is in slavery.

¹⁴ ¶ So Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a bottle of water and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child and sent her away; and she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

²² ¶ So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. ²³ And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore the name of it was called Marah. ²⁴ Then the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? ²⁵ And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, which when he had cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There he gave them statutes and rights, and there he proved them

¹ ¶ And all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and set up camp in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink. ² And the people chided with Moses and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? Why do ye tempt the LORD? ³ So the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses and said, Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?

⁹ So the king of Israel went and the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and as they walked round about seven days’ journey through the desert, there was no water for the host or for the beasts that followed them.

¹ A Psalm of David,
when he was in the wilderness of Judah. ¶ O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee; my soul thirsts for thee; my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water;

¹² The smith shall take the tongs; he shall work among the coals; he shall give it form with the hammers and bring forth in it the arm of his strength; though he is hungry and his strength fails: he shall not drink water, even if he faints.

³ And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded and covered their heads.

³⁸ And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

¹¹ And Jacob kissed Rachel and lifted up his voice and wept.

³⁴ For how shall I go up to my father and the lad not be with me? I cannot go lest I see the evil that shall come on my father.

⁴ And when the angel of the LORD spoke these words unto all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁹ The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept.

¹⁶ ¶ And it came to pass, when David had finished speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

⁴ Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep.

²⁶ Then the woman, of whom the living child was, spoke unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.

⁶ For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? How can I endure to see the destruction of my nation?

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and of prayer, and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn over him as one mourns for his only son, afflicting themselves over him as one afflicts himself over his firstborn.

²⁰ And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.

¹ ¶ After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram; I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

⁹ And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD yet said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son and shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard thy affliction.

³ And he said, I am the God, the God of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt; for there I will make of thee a great people.

⁷ ¶ And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

¹³ And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still and see the saving health of the LORD, which he will bestow on you today; for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall never see them again for ever.

²³ If thou afflict them in any manner, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;

²⁷ for only that is his covering, it is his clothing to cover his flesh, in which he must sleep; and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear, for I am merciful.

²³ And they cried unto the sons of Dan. And these turned their faces and said unto Micah, What ails thee that thou dost come with such a company?

⁵ ¶ And, behold, Saul came after the oxen out of the field, and Saul said, What ails the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

⁴ But Jehoahaz grieved before the LORD, and the LORD hearkened unto him, for he saw the oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed them.

²³ But the LORD was merciful unto them, and had compassion on them, and looked upon them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and did not desire to destroy them or to cast them from his presence as yet.

¹⁵ and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

² O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.

¹⁵ He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and glorify him.

⁴ They wandered lost in the wilderness, alone and out of the way; they found no city to dwell in. ⁵ Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. ⁶ Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

¹ ¶ The burden of the valley of the vision. What ails thee now that thou art completely gone up to the housetops?

¹⁰ ¶ Do not fear for I am with thee; do not be dismayed, for I am thy God, who strengthens thee; I will help thee always; I will always uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

¹³ For I am the LORD thy God that holds thy right hand saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. ¹⁴ Fear not, thou worm Jacob, ye dead of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

¹ ¶ But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Do not fear, for I have redeemed thee, I have named thee; Thou art mine. ² When thou dost pass through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou dost walk through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

³² Then Jesus called his disciples unto him and said, I have mercy on the multitude because they persevere with me now three days and have nothing to eat, and I desire not to send them away fasting lest they faint in the way.

³⁶ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said unto the prince of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

¹³ And also of the son of the bondwoman I will make a nation because he is thy seed.

³¹ Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way and his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed down his head and fell flat on his face.

¹⁷ And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horsemen and chariots of fire round about Elisha. ¹⁸ And when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD and said, Smite these people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. ¹⁹ And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria. ²⁰ And when they came into Samaria, Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

⁵ ¶ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. ⁶ Then the lame one shall leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall praise; for waters shall be dug in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.

¹⁶ But their eyes were held fast that they should not know him. ¹⁷ And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another as ye walk and are sad? ¹⁸ And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? ¹⁹ Then he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, ²⁰ and how the princes of the priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and crucified him. ²¹ But we were hoping that it was he who should redeem Israel, and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done. ²² Although also certain women of our company made us astonished, who before daybreak were at the sepulchre; ²³ and when they did not find his body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. ²⁴ And certain of those who were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said; but they did not see him. ²⁵ Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken; ²⁶ ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter (like this) into his glory? ²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded this unto them in all the scriptures concerning himself. ²⁸ And they drew near unto the village where they went, and he made as though he would have gone further. ²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. ³⁰ And it came to pass as he sat at the table with them, he took bread and blessed it and broke and gave to them. ³¹ And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

⁹ He was a powerful hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, Even as Nimrod, the powerful hunter before the LORD.

¹² And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

²⁷ And the boys grew, and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was an upright man, remaining in the tents.

³ Now, therefore, take I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow and go out to the field and take me some venison

¹⁵ And, behold, I am with thee and will keep thee in all places where thou goest and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

² But the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prospered man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. ³ And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

²¹ But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy and gave him grace in the sight of the prince of the house of the prison.

²³ The arches have sorely grieved him and shot at him and hated him; ²⁴ but his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the Mighty one of Jacob; from there did the stone of Israel shepherd,

¹² And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

²⁴ ¶ And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. And the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. ²⁵ And the Spirit of the LORD began to manifest himself at times in him in the camps of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

⁸⁰ And the child grew and was comforted of the Spirit and was in the deserts until the day of his showing unto Israel.

⁴⁰ And the child grew and was comforted of the Spirit, filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him.

³ and I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; ⁴ but thou shalt go unto my country and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

³⁴ ¶ And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon, the Hittite: ³⁵ Who were bitterness of spirit unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

⁴⁶ And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these who are of the daughters of this land, why should I want to live?

¹² And the sons of Israel moved out of the wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.

¹⁶ And afterward he moved the people from Hazeroth, and they pitched camp in the wilderness of Paran.

³ And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran; all those men were princes of the sons of Israel.

²⁶ ¶ And they went and came to Moses and to Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran to Kadesh and brought back word unto them and unto all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.

² And he came up and told his father and his mother, saying, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore get her for me to wife.

¹ ¶ And Samuel died, and all Israel gathered together and lamented him and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

³⁸ So then he that gives her in marriage does well, but he that does not give her in marriage does better.

² And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

¹⁷ So Abraham prayed unto God; and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants; and they bore children.

²⁶ ¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar and Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol, the chief captain of his army.

²⁸ And they said, We have seen certainly that the LORD is with thee; and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee,

²⁷ And Laban said unto him, Let me now find grace in thine eyes, I have learned by experience that the LORD has blessed me for thy sake.

⁷ ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, From this day I will begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

¹ ¶ And Solomon, the son of David, was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and magnified him exceedingly.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.

¹⁴ Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee; they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is no one else; there is none other beside God.

²³ Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said, In those days it shall come to pass that ten men of all the languages of the Gentiles shall take hold of the robe of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.

²³ Behold, a virgin shall conceive and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God With Us.

³¹ ¶ What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who shall be against us?

²⁵ for the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed in you.

⁵ Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have; for he has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

⁹ Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but do lie; behold, I will constrain them to come and worship before thy feet and to know that I have loved thee.

²² And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of the heavens and of the earth, ²³ that I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet; I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou should say, I have made Abram rich,

¹⁴ ¶ Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen and menslaves and womenslaves and gave them unto Abraham and restored him Sarah his wife.

³ and I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

⁴⁴ Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou, and let it be for a witness between me and thee.

⁵³ The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their fathers, judge between us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

¹³ Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God and serve him and shalt swear by his name.

¹² Now, therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD since I have showed you mercy that ye will also do the same unto my father’s house, of which thou shalt give me a true sign,

¹³ the LORD do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do thee evil, then I will show it to thee and send thee away that thou may go in peace; and the LORD be with thee as he has been with my father.

¹⁷ And Jonathan swore unto David again because he loved him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

⁴² And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed, and Jonathan entered into the city.

²¹ Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house. ²² Then David swore unto Saul. And Saul went home, but David and his men went up unto the fortress.

¹⁵ And David said to him, Wilt thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.

² And thou shalt swear, The LORD lives, in truth, in judgment, and in righteous ness; and the Gentiles shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

²³ Moreover I call God for a witness upon my soul that I have not yet come unto Corinth to spare you.

¹⁶ For men verily swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all controversy.

¹³ ¶ And one came that had escaped and told Abram the Hebrew, who dwelt among the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with Abram.

¹⁸ If it can be done, as much as is possible on your part, live in peace with all men.

⁷ And there was a strife between the pastors of Abram’s cattle and the pastors of Lot’s cattle; and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land.

¹⁵ For all the wells which his father’s slaves had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them and filled them with earth. ¹⁶ And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us, for thou art become much mightier than we. ¹⁷ And Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there. ¹⁸ And Isaac reopened the wells of water, which they had opened in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham, and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. ¹⁹ And Isaac’s slaves dug in the valley and found there a well of living waters. ²⁰ And the pastors of Gerar strove with Isaac’s pastors, saying, The water is ours; therefore he called the name of the well Esek, because they strove with him. ²¹ And they opened another well and strove for that one also; and he called the name of it Sitnah. ²² And he left there and opened another well; and for that one they did not strive and he called the name of it Rehoboth, and he said, For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

⁸ And they said, We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together and until they roll the stone from the well’s mouth, that we may water the sheep.

¹⁵ Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. ¹⁶ ¶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came and drew water to fill the troughs to water their father’s sheep. ¹⁷ But the pastors came and drove them away. Then Moses stood up and defended them and watered their sheep.

¹⁵ And she said unto him, Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

¹⁰ ¶ Reproof is of more benefit to a wise man than a hundred stripes to a fool.

⁹ Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself and do not uncover the secret to another

⁵ ¶ Open rebuke is better than secret love.

¹⁵ ¶ Therefore if thy brother shall sin against thee, go and reprove him between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

²⁰ ¶ But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared Naaman, this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and take something from him. ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him and said, Is there no peace? ²² And he said, Peace. My master has sent me, saying, Behold, even now two young men of the sons of the prophets came to me from Mount Ephraim; give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver and two changes of garments. ²³ And Naaman said, If you wish take two talents. And he urged him and bound two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of garments and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bore them before him. ²⁴ And when he came to a secret place, he took them from their hand and bestowed them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed.

²⁸ And they said, We have seen certainly that the LORD is with thee; and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee, ²⁹ that thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee and as we have done unto thee nothing but good and have sent thee away in peace; thou art now the blessed of the LORD. ³⁰ And he made them a banquet, and they ate and drank. ³¹ And they rose up early in the morning and swore one to another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul.

⁸ ¶ A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it; wherever it turns, it prospers.

¹⁶ ¶ A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.

²⁴ ¶ The man that has friends must show himself to be a friend, and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

¹⁴ ¶ A gift in secret pacifies anger, and a bribe in the bosom strong wrath.

⁸ But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things shall he rise.

¹³ and has taken of the seed of the kingdom and made a covenant with him and has brought him to an oath: he has also taken the mighty of the land:

³¹ without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, without mercy.

¹⁵ Brethren, (I speak after the manner of men) Even when a covenant is of man, once it is confirmed, no one cancels it or adds to it.

⁸ And he said, What meanest thou by all these droves which I met? And he said, To find grace in the sight of my lord.

²⁶ And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What do you mean by this service?

¹⁴ Then Samuel said, What means then this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

⁴⁴ Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou, and let it be for a witness between me and thee. ⁴⁵ Then Jacob took a stone and set it up for a pillar. ⁴⁶ And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones and made a heap; and they ate there upon the heap. ⁴⁷ And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed. ⁴⁸ And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;

⁵² let this heap be witness and this pillar be witness that I will not pass over this heap against thee and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar against me, for harm.

²⁷ but that it may be a witness between us and you and our generations after us, to do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD. ²⁸ Therefore we said, that it shall be, if they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may reply, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings nor for sacrifices, but it is a witness between us and you.

²⁷ And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us, for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke unto us: it shall be, therefore, a witness unto you lest ye deny your God.

²³ And he went up from there unto Beersheba.

¹ ¶ Then all the sons of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan to Beersheba and the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.

¹¹ Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude, and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

²⁵ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

¹⁴ and Pathrusim and Casluhim (out of whom came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.

²⁷ And Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant.

⁸ And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time that Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looking out a window, saw Isaac sporting with Rebekah, his wife.

¹⁴ for he had possession of flocks, possession of herds, great store of servants, and the Philistines envied him.

¹⁷ ¶ And it came to pass when Pharaoh had let the people go that God did not lead them through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt;

¹ ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.

²⁶ And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD.

⁸ And he went from there unto a mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west and Hai on the east; and there he built an altar unto the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD.

²⁵ And he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s slaves opened a well.

²¹ Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.

²⁷ The habitation of God is eternal, and underneath the everlasting arms; he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee and shall say, Destroy them.

⁷ And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and forgot the LORD their God and served the Baalim and the groves.

² Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the God of the age is the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth? He does not faint, nor is he weary; and there is no one that can attain to his intelligence.

¹⁵ For thus has said the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is The Holy One; I dwell in the high place and in holiness and with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit to cause the spirit of the humble to live and to cause the heart of the contrite ones to live.

¹⁰ But the LORD God is the Truth, he himself is Living God and Everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembles, and the Gentiles shall not be able to abide his indignation.

¹⁴ Those that swear by the guiltiness of Samaria and say, As thy God of Dan lives; and, As the way of Beersheba lives, even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

²⁰ For the invisible things of him, his eternal power and divinity, are clearly understood by the creation of the world and by the things that are made so that there is no excuse;

²⁶ but now is made manifest, and by the writings of the prophets, by the commandment of God eternal, declared unto all the Gentiles, that they might hear and obey by faith,

¹⁷ Therefore unto the King forever, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¹ ¶ And Abraham journeyed from there toward the land of the Negev and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur and sojourned in Gerar.

¹⁵ For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers; our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no other hope.

¹² Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

⁹ By faith he sojourned in the promised land, as in a strange country, dwelling in booths with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;

¹³ These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but seeing them afar off and believing them and embracing them and confessing that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

¹¹ Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from the carnal desires which war against the soul
