¹ ¶ And Jacob dwelt in the land in which his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. ² These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. ³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colours. ⁴ And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him and could not speak peaceably unto him. ⁵ ¶ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren; and they hated him yet the more. ⁶ And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: ⁷ For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about and made obeisance to my sheaf. ⁸ And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words. ⁹ And he dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brethren, saying, Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars made obeisance to me. ¹⁰ And he told it to his father and to his brethren; and his father reprehended him and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? ¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the word. ¹² ¶ And his brethren went to feed their father’s sheep in Shechem. ¹³ And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the sheep in Shechem? Come and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I. ¹⁴ And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it is well with thy brethren and well with the sheep and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. ¹⁵ And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? ¹⁶ And he said, I seek my brethren; tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. ¹⁷ And the man said, They are departed from here; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren and found them in Dothan. ¹⁸ And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. ¹⁹ And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer comes; ²⁰ now therefore, come and let us slay him and cast him into a cistern, and we will say, Some evil beast has devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams. ²¹ When Reuben heard it, he delivered him out of their hands and said, Let us not kill him. ²² And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood but cast him into this cistern that is in the wilderness and lay no hand upon him that he might rid him out of their hands to deliver him to his father again. ²³ ¶ And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; ²⁴ and they took him and cast him into the cistern; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. ²⁵ And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing aromas and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. ²⁶ Then Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. ²⁸ And when the Midianite merchantmen passed by, they took and lifted up Joseph out of the cistern and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt. ²⁹ And Reuben returned unto the cistern; and, behold, Joseph was not inside, and he rent his clothes. ³⁰ And he returned unto his brethren and said, The young man is not; and I, where shall I go? ³¹ ¶ Then they took Joseph’s coat and killed a kid of the goats and dipped the coat in the blood; ³² and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father and said, We have found this, recognize now whether it is thy son’s coat or not. ³³ And he knew it and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. ³⁴ Then Jacob rent his clothes and put sackcloth upon his loins and mourned for his son many days. ³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. ³⁶ And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s and captain of the guard.

⁸ And I will give unto thee and to thy seed after thee, the land in which thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting inheritance; and I will be their God.

⁴ I am a stranger and a sojourner with you; give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

⁴ and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee and to thy seed with thee; that thou may inherit the land in which thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

⁷ For their riches were more than that they might dwell together, and the land in which they were strangers could not bear them because of their livestock.

⁹ By faith he sojourned in the promised land, as in a strange country, dwelling in booths with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; ¹⁰ for he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. ¹¹ By faith also Sara herself being sterile received strength to conceive seed and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she believed him to be faithful who had promised. ¹² Therefore there sprang even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. ¹³ These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but seeing them afar off and believing them and embracing them and confessing that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. ¹⁴ For those that say such things declare plainly that they seek their native country. ¹⁵ And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from which they came out, they might have had time to have returned. ¹⁶ But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one; therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

⁴ ¶ These are the origins of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens

¹ ¶ This is the book of the descendants of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in the likeness of God;

⁹ These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

¹ ¶ Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and unto them were born sons after the flood.

⁴ And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Jacob went in unto her.

⁹ When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing children, she took Zilpah, her maid and gave her Jacob to wife.

²² And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

²⁵ And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Padanaram.

²² Now Eli was very old and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel and how they lay with the women that served at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony. ²³ And he said unto them, Why do ye do such things? For I hear from all the people of your evil dealings. ²⁴ No, my sons, for it is no good report that I hear that ye cause the people of the LORD to transgress.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil.

¹¹ For it has been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by those of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

¹ ¶ It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

¹⁸ For first of all, when ye come together in the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}, I hear that there are divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

²³ ¶ And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

³² and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father and said, We have found this, recognize now whether it is thy son’s coat or not.

²⁰ And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a young man of his old age, yet a lad; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him. ²¹ And thou didst say unto thy slaves, Bring him down unto me that I may set my eyes upon him. ²² And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die. ²³ And thou didst say unto thy slaves, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, ye shall see my face no more. ²⁴ And it came to pass when we came up unto thy slave my father, we told him the words of my lord. ²⁵ And our father said, Go again and buy us a little food. ²⁶ And we said, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then will we go down; for we may not see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us. ²⁷ Then thy slave my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bore me two sons; ²⁸ and the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces, and I have not seen him since; ²⁹ and if ye take this one also from me and some disaster should befall him, ye shall bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol. ³⁰ Now therefore when I come to thy slave my father, and the lad is not with us, seeing that his soul is bound up in the lad’s soul,

³⁰ Have they not found spoil and are dividing it? To each man a damsel or two; to Sisera a spoil of different colours, a spoil of different colours of needlework, of different colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of those that take the spoil?

¹⁸ And she had a garment of different colours upon her, for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her.

¹³ The king’s daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold. ¹⁴ She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework; the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee.

¹⁶ And of thy garments thou didst take and make altars of divers colours and play the harlot thereupon; the like shall not come again, neither shall it be so.

³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

²² Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. ²³ And one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was seated at the table beside Jesus.

⁵ but he did not look upon Cain and his present. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

⁴¹ ¶ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will slay my brother Jacob.

⁵ ¶ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren; and they hated him yet the more.

¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the word.

²³ The arches have sorely grieved him and shot at him and hated him;

¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and of a beautiful countenance and handsome. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he. ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

²⁸ And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard when he spoke unto the men, and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why didst thou come down here? And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the malice of thy heart, for thou art come down that thou might see the battle.

¹⁹ For my enemies are alive, and they are strong, and those that hate me wrongfully are multiplied;

⁴ Those that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; those that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty; then I restored that which I did not take away.

³ His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart from this place and go into Judea that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. ⁴ For no one who seeks to be clearly known does anything in secret. If thou doest these things, show thyself to the world. ⁵ For not even his brethren believed in him.

¹⁸ ¶ If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

³ For we ourselves also were foolish in another time, rebellious, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹¹ But he that hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness and does not know where he goes, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

¹⁰ In this the sons of God are manifest, and the sons of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness and that loves not his brother is not of God.

¹² Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

²⁰ If anyone says, I love God and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

¹² And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

⁴ And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him and could not speak peaceably unto him.

⁸ And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words.

⁵ ¶ And both of them dreamed a dream, each man his dream in the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

⁹ Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

⁶ And he said, Hear now my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision and will speak unto him in dreams.

¹³ And when Gideon arrived, behold, a man was telling a dream to his fellow, saying, Behold, I dreamed a dream that I saw a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and come unto the tents, and it smote them so that they fell and overturned them, and the tents fell. ¹⁴ And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash, a man of Israel, for God has delivered the Midianites with all the camp into his hand.

⁵ ¶ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, Ask what you wish that I shall give thee.

¹⁴ Nun The secret of the LORD is for those that fear him, and he will show them his covenant.

¹ ¶ And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, with which his spirit was troubled, and his sleep fled from him.

⁵ I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the imaginations and visions of my head troubled me in my bed.

²⁸ ¶ And it shall come to pass after this that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

⁷ Because the Lord GOD will do nothing unless he reveals his secret to his slaves the prophets.

¹⁴ I have given them thy word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

¹⁸ ¶ Then Judah came near unto him and said, Oh my lord, let thy slave, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy slave; for thou art even as Pharaoh.

⁷ ¶ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of Mount Gerizim and lifted up his voice and cried and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

⁶ And Joseph was the lord over the land, and he it was that sold the wheat to all the people of the land; and Joseph’s brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

²⁶ ¶ And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hand in the house and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

¹⁴ And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house, for he was yet there; and they fell before him on the ground.

¹⁹ My lord asked his slaves, saying, Have ye a father or a brother?

¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth,

¹⁸ And he is the head of the body, the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence.

²⁶ The blessings of thy father were greater than the blessings of my progenitors; unto the borders of the eternal hills they shall be upon the head of Joseph and on the crown of the Nazarite of his brethren.

¹⁴ And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Doest thou intend to kill me as thou killed the Egyptian? And Moses feared and said, Surely this thing is known.

²⁷ But the sons of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him and brought him no presents. But he pretended not to notice.

³ let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us. ⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. ⁵ Then he shall speak unto them in his wrath and trouble them in his sore displeasure. ⁶ Yet I have set my king upon Zion, the mountain of my holiness.

²² The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner.

¹⁴ But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

¹⁷ But he beheld them and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

²⁷ For of a truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together (in this city), ²⁸ to do that which thy hand and thy counsel had determined beforehand must be done.

³⁵ This Moses, whom they had refused, saying, Who made thee a prince and a judge? the same did God send as prince and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

²⁹ Of how much greater punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden underfoot the Son of God and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

¹⁰ And he told it to his father and to his brethren; and his father reprehended him and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

²⁵ Then Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God has showed Pharaoh what he is about to do.

³² And that the dream came unto Pharaoh twice, it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

²⁸ And they answered, Thy slave our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

⁹ Make haste and go up to my father and say unto him: Thus saith thy son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down unto me, tarry not.

²⁹ And Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and manifested himself unto him; and he fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.

¹² And Joseph nourished his father and his brethren, and all his father’s household with bread, according to their families.

¹⁵ ¶ And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. ¹⁶ And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, ¹⁷ So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren and their sin, for they did unto thee evil; and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the slaves of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spoke unto him. ¹⁸ And his brethren also went and fell down before his face, and they said, Behold, we are thy slaves. ¹⁹ And Joseph said unto them, Fear not; for am I in the place of God? ²⁰ But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God thought it out unto good, to bring to pass that which we see this day, to give life to many people. ²¹ Now therefore fear ye not; I will nourish you and your little ones. Thus he comforted them and spoke to their heart.

¹⁰ And it magnified itself unto the host of heaven, and it cast down part of the host and of the stars to the ground and trod them under.

⁹ And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him ¹⁰ and delivered him out of all his afflictions and gave him grace and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. ¹¹ Now there came a famine over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers found no sustenance. ¹² But when Jacob heard that there was wheat in Egypt, he sent our fathers the first time. ¹³ And in the second Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s lineage was made known unto Pharaoh. ¹⁴ Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob unto him and all his kindred, seventy-five souls.

¹⁵ that ye may be blameless and innocent, children of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world,

²⁹ Let the peoples serve thee and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee; cursed be every one that curses thee, and blessed be he that blesses thee.

¹⁴ The sons also of those that afflicted thee shall come humbled unto thee; and at the steps of thy feet all those that despised thee shall bow themselves down; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth, ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is Lord in the glory of God the Father.

³¹ And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; why dost thou stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and the place for the camels.

¹⁴ for he had possession of flocks, possession of herds, great store of servants, and the Philistines envied him. ¹⁵ For all the wells which his father’s slaves had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them and filled them with earth. ¹⁶ And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us, for thou art become much mightier than we.

¹⁶ Then they envied Moses in the camp and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

⁴ ¶ Again, I considered all travail and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹³ The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.

¹¹ LORD, when thy hand is withdrawn, they will not see: but they shall see in the end and be ashamed with the zeal of the people. And fire shall consume thine enemies.

²⁸ Up unto here was the end of the word. I, Daniel, was very troubled in my thoughts, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the word in my heart.

¹⁸ For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

¹⁰ For he knew that the princes of the priests had delivered him for envy.

¹⁹ But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.

⁵¹ And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject unto them, but his mother kept all these things in her heart.

⁹ And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy and spoke against that which Paul said, contradicting and blaspheming.

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical. ¹⁶ For where there is envy and contention, there is confusion and every perverse work.

⁵ Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?

¹⁸ And Jacob came safe and sound to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram, and pitched his tent before the city.

²⁵ ¶ And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword and came upon the city boldly and slew all the males. ²⁶ And they slew Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out. ²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled the city because they had defiled their sister. ²⁸ They took their sheep and their oxen and their asses and that which was in the city and that which was in the field ²⁹ and all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives they took captive and spoiled even all that was in the house. ³⁰ And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house. ³¹ And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?

¹ ¶ And Jacob dwelt in the land in which his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass after these things that God proved Abraham and said unto him, Abraham; and he said, Behold, here I am.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass, that when Isaac became old, and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau, his eldest son, and said unto him, My son, and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.

¹⁸ ¶ And he came unto his father and said, My father, and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?

⁴ and the LORD called Samuel, and he answered, Here am I. ⁵ And he ran unto Eli and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. And he said, I did not call; lie down again. And he went and lay down. ⁶ And the LORD called Samuel yet again. And Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. And he answered, I did not call, my son; lie down again.

⁸ And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me. Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the child.

¹⁶ Then Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

¹⁷ And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves and run to the camp to thy brethren ¹⁸ and carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand and look how thy brethren fare and take their pledge. ¹⁹ Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines. ²⁰ And David rose up early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took and went with his burden as Jesse had commanded him, and he came to the trench as the host was going forth in battle array, and they had already sounded the alarm for the battle.

¹⁶ ¶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore prudent as serpents and innocent as doves.

¹³ Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

¹ ¶ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ² Honour thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), ³ that it may be well with thee, and thou may live long on the earth.

¹⁸ Then Abram removed his tent and came and dwelt among the terebinth {or mighty} trees of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

² And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

⁶ And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well, and, behold, Rachel, his daughter, comes with the sheep.

²⁷ And Jacob came unto Isaac, his father, unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

¹⁶ And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me; God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

²² And they ascended by the Negev and came unto Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the sons of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

¹³ Then Joshua blessed him and gave unto Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, Hebron as inheritance.

¹⁵ And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; Arba had been a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

³² And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom at peace? And Cushi answered, Let the enemies of my lord the king and all that rise against thee for evil, be as that young man.

³³ Their blood shall, therefore, return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever; but upon David and upon his seed and upon his house and upon his throne shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall take them away with the workers of iniquity; and peace shall be upon Israel.

⁷ And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

⁴² saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

¹⁴ ¶ So Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a bottle of water and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child and sent her away; and she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

²² And as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said unto him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he entered into where she was, behold, Sisera lay dead with the stake through his temples.

¹⁹ And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria.

³⁸ Then Jesus turned and saw them following and said unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou?

²⁷ ¶ And upon this came his disciples and marvelled that he talked with that woman; yet no one said, What askest thou? or, What talkest thou with her?

⁴ Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

⁷ Then he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

¹⁵ Jesus said unto her, Woman, why dost thou weep? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said unto him, Lord, if thou didst carry him off, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

⁷ ¶ Tell me, O thou whom my soul loves, where thou dost feed, where thou dost make thy flock to rest at noon; for why did I have to be as a wanderer after the flocks of thy companions?

¹⁰ For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

¹³ ¶ And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

¹ ¶ And Saul spoke to Jonathan, his son, and to all his slaves that they should kill David.

¹³ For I have heard the slander of many; fear was on every side; while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

¹² Zain The wicked plots against the just and gnashes upon him with his teeth.

³² Tzaddi The wicked watches the righteous and seeks to slay him.

²¹ They gather themselves together as an army against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent blood.

²⁵ ¶ He turned their heart to hate his people to think evil against his slaves.

⁴ They have responded to my love by becoming my adversaries, but I give myself unto prayer.

³⁸ But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us take his inheritance.

¹ ¶ When the morning was come, all the princes of the priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death,

⁷ But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the place shall be ours.

¹ ¶ Two days after was the passover and the days of unleavened bread; and the princes of the priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, that they might kill him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, let us kill him that the inheritance may be ours. ¹⁵ So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

⁵³ So that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.

¹² ¶ And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together and they vowed under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

²⁰ And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel shall be firm and stable in thy hand.

² Then Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

²⁴ and as he went, a lion met him by the way and slew him, and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, and the lion also stood by the carcase.

²⁴ And he turned back and looked on them and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And two bears came forth out of the forest and tore apart forty-two young men of them.

⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they attempt to hide the snares; they say, Who shall see them?

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without cause. ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol and whole as those that go down into the pit;

¹⁶ For their feet shall run to evil and make haste to shed blood.

¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹⁸ ¶ He that hides hatred has lying lips, and he that utters a slander, is a fool.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is impetuous, but who is able to stand before envy?

¹³ ¶ He that covers his sins shall not prosper, but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall attain mercy.

² saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him. ³ When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he asked them where the Christ should be born. ⁵ And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea, for thus it is written by the prophet, ⁶ And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda, for out of thee shall come a Leader that shall shepherd my people Israel. ⁷ Then Herod, calling the wise men unto him secretly, understood of them with diligence the time of the appearing of the star; ⁸ and sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go there and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again that I may come and worship him also. ⁹ ¶ When they had heard the king, they departed; and, behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it arrived and stood over where the young child was. ¹⁰ Seeing the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. ¹¹ And entering into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother; and falling down, they worshipped him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh. ¹² And being warned by divine revelation in dreams that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. ¹³ ¶ And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in dreams, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt and remain there until I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the young child to kill him. ¹⁴ And awaking, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt ¹⁵ and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. ¹⁶ ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth and sent forth and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had understood of the wise men.

⁴⁰ and saying, Thou that wouldst destroy the temple and build it in three days, save thyself. If thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}. ⁴¹ Likewise also the princes of the priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, ⁴² He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}, and we will believe him.

²⁹ And those that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads and saying, Ah, thou that would destroy the temple of God and build it in three days, ³⁰ save thyself and come down from the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}. ³¹ Likewise also the princes of the priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. ³² Let the Christ, King of Israel, descend now from the stake that we may see and believe. And those that were crucified {Gr. Stauroo – to hang on a stake} with him reviled him.

¹² If I have told you earthly things and ye do not believe, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things?

¹⁰ So the princes of the priests took counsel that they might also put Lazarus to death ¹¹ because by reason of him many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus.

¹⁶ saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle has been done by them is manifest to all those that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them that from now on they speak to no man in this name. ¹⁸ And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

⁵ For surely your blood which is your souls I will require; at the hand of every animal I will require it and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother I will require the soul (or life) of man.

²² Then Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak unto you, saying, Do not sin against the young man, and ye would not hear? Therefore, behold, his blood is also required.

²⁸ ¶ In that same day Joshua took Makkedah and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them and all the souls that were therein; he let no one remain; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

²⁸ And fear not those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

¹² And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou doest fear God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

¹¹ But he did not lay his hand upon the princes of the sons of Israel, and they saw God and ate and drank.

⁹ but thou must kill him; thy hand shall be first upon him to put him to death and afterwards the hand of all the people.

²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it.

¹ ¶ Now at that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to mistreat certain of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}.

³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colours.

³¹ ¶ Then they took Joseph’s coat and killed a kid of the goats and dipped the coat in the blood; ³² and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father and said, We have found this, recognize now whether it is thy son’s coat or not. ³³ And he knew it and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

²¹ ¶ And they said one to another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

¹⁸ They part my garments among them and cast lots upon my vesture.

²⁸ And they stripped him and put on him a scarlet robe.

⁷ For without cause they have hid their net for me in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.

² He brought me up also out of the pit of hopelessness, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock and straightened my steps.

⁶ Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

⁸ Thou hast put away mine acquaintances far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

¹ A Song of degrees. ¶ Out of the depths I cry unto thee, O LORD. ² Lord, hear my voice; let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

⁶ Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

⁵² Tzaddi My enemies hunted me like a bird, without cause. ⁵³ Tzaddi They bound up my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. ⁵⁴ Tzaddi Waters flowed over my head; then I said, I am dead. ⁵⁵ ¶ Koph I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon.

²⁰ Resh The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we had said, Under his shadow we shall live among the Gentiles.

¹¹ As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have taken thy prisoners out of the pit in which there is no water.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD yet said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son and shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard thy affliction. ¹² And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

¹ ¶ Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. ² And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. ³ And Jokshan begat Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. ⁴ And the sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.

¹⁶ These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns and by their palaces; twelve princes according to their families. ¹⁷ And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred thirty-seven years; and Ishmael expired and died and was gathered unto his people. ¹⁸ And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria; and he fell in the presence of all his brethren.

²¹ So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up and passed the river and set his face toward Mount Gilead.

²³ Then he took his brethren with him and pursued after him seven days’ journey; and they overtook him in Mount Gilead.

²⁸ And when the Midianite merchantmen passed by, they took and lifted up Joseph out of the cistern and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.

³⁶ And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s and captain of the guard.

¹ ¶ And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hands of the Ishmeelites, who had brought him down there.

¹¹ ¶ Then their father Israel answered them, If it must be so now, do this: take of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and take the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, aromas, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.

¹⁵ The posts went out in haste by the king’s commandment, and the law was given in Shushan, the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

⁴ ¶ The workers of iniquity certainly know this; those who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD.

⁶ The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; of Moab and the Hagarenes;

²⁰ Such is the track of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then was there no medicine for the daughter of my people?

¹¹ Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for there is no cure for thee.

⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

¹⁰ And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground.

³² And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

²⁰ now therefore, come and let us slay him and cast him into a cistern, and we will say, Some evil beast has devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

⁸ ¶ If a matter arises that is too difficult for thee in judgment between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates, then thou shalt arise and go up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose,

¹⁶ And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head, for thy mouth has testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.

¹⁸ O earth, do not cover my blood; and let there be no place where my cry is hidden.

⁹ What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? Shall it declare thy truth?

⁸ But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat and of barley and of oil and of honey. So he forbare, and did not slay them among their brethren.

⁷ For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she did not poured it upon the ground, to cover it with dust;

²⁶ For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

¹⁴ And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

²² And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood but cast him into this cistern that is in the wilderness and lay no hand upon him that he might rid him out of their hands to deliver him to his father again.

¹⁶ Likewise he that steals a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

²¹ Notwithstanding, if he continues a day or two, he shall not be punished, for he is his money.

¹⁷ And Saul said to David, Behold I will give thee my elder daughter Merab to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’s battles. For Saul said to himself, My hand shall not be against him, but the hand of the Philistines shall be against him.

¹⁴ ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that the most valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the people of the slaves of David fell, and Uriah the Hittite died also.

⁹ Why, therefore, hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? Thou hast killed Uriah, the Hittite, with the sword and hast taken his wife to be thy wife and hast slain him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.

⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren, the Jews who had been sold unto the Gentiles; and will ye even sell your brethren? And shall they be sold unto us? Then they remained silent, for they had nothing to answer.

¹⁵ and said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

¹⁰ for fornicators, for homosexuals, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,

¹³ and cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oil and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and of sheep, and of horses, and of chariots and of bodies and souls of men.

² And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

²⁵ And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing aromas and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

⁴ Then Joseph said unto his brethren, Now come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. ⁵ Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves that ye sold me here, for God sent me before you for life.

¹⁶ ¶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came and drew water to fill the troughs to water their father’s sheep.

¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, prince of peoples, of the house of the father, in Midian.

¹⁷ Declare war on the Midianites and smite them;

² Avenge the sons of Israel upon the Midianites; afterward thou shalt be gathered unto thy peoples. ³ And Moses spoke unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war and let them go against the Midianites and carry out the vengeance of the LORD in Midian.

⁸ And they also slew the kings of Midian among the rest of those that were slain: namely, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, five kings of Midian; they also slew Balaam, the son of Beor, with the sword. ⁹ And the sons of Israel took all the women of Midian captives and their little ones and took the spoil of all their beasts and all their flocks and all their goods.

¹ ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hands of Midian for seven years. ² And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel, and because of the Midianites the sons of Israel made dens in the mountains and caves and strongholds. ³ For when those of Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up and the Amalekites and the sons of the east. They would come up against them

²² ¶ Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou and thy son and thy son’s son also, for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

²⁴ And Gideon said unto them, I desire to make a request of you that ye each one would give me the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings because they were Ishmaelites.)

⁹ ¶ Do unto them as unto the Midianites, as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison,

¹⁷ He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a slave,

⁶ The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the LORD.

¹² And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my wages; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my wages thirty pieces of silver. ¹³ And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the treasury: a goodly price that I was appraised at by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and cast them in the house of the LORD unto the treasury.

⁹ Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the sons of Israel did value,

¹³ And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully and talked because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

³⁴ Then Jacob rent his clothes and put sackcloth upon his loins and mourned for his son many days.

¹³ Then they rent their clothes, and each one laded his ass, and they returned to the city.

⁶ And Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, who were of those that had spied out the land, rent their clothes;

³⁵ And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me, for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

¹ ¶ And when King Hezekiah heard it, he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD.

²⁰ ¶ Then Job arose and rent his mantle and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshipped

¹³ and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in mercy, and he does repent of chastisement.

¹⁴ Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they rent their clothes and ran in among the people, crying out

¹³ And they said, Thy slaves are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

³² We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

³⁵ And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. ³⁶ And Jacob, their father, said unto them, Ye have bereaved me of my sons: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; all these things are upon me.

¹⁵ Thus hath the LORD said; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her sons, she refused to be comforted regarding her sons, because they perished.

²⁰ And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a young man of his old age, yet a lad; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him. ²¹ And thou didst say unto thy slaves, Bring him down unto me that I may set my eyes upon him. ²² And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die. ²³ And thou didst say unto thy slaves, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

³⁰ But as soon as this thy son was come who has devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed the fatted calf for him.

²⁸ and the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces, and I have not seen him since;

¹⁵ ¶ The simple believes every word, but the prudent man understands his steps.

⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou dost not understand now, but thou shalt understand afterwards.

²⁹ And Reuben returned unto the cistern; and, behold, Joseph was not inside, and he rent his clothes.

⁶ ¶ Then Joshua rent his clothes and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, putting dust upon their heads.

¹¹ ¶ Then David took hold on his clothes and rent them and likewise all the men that were with him.

³¹ Then David said to Joab and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes and gird yourselves with sackcloth and mourn before Abner. And King David himself followed the bier.

³¹ ¶ Then his slaves said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings; let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins and ropes upon our heads and go out to the king of Israel; peradventure he will give thee thy life.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh and fasted and slept in sackcloth and went softly.

¹⁶ And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the heaven and the earth, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

³ And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle and plucked off of the hair of my head and of my beard and sat down astonied. ⁴ Then each one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel because of the transgression of those that had been carried away were assembled unto me; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice. ⁵ ¶ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my affliction; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God

¹ ¶ Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month, the sons of Israel were assembled with fasting and with sackcloth and earth upon them.

¹ ¶ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry ² and came before the king’s gate; for no one was allowed to enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth. ³ And in each province, wherever the king’s commandment and his law came, there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept; and each one rent his mantle and sprinkled dust upon his head toward heaven.

¹¹ I made sackcloth also my garment, and I became a proverb to them.

¹² Therefore the Lord GOD of the hosts did call in this day unto weeping and to mourning and to baldness and to girding with sackcloth: ¹³ And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine while they say, let us eat and drink for tomorrow we shall die.

¹¹ Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make yourselves bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins.

²² Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and Joah, the son of Asaph, the writer of chronicles, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

²⁴ Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his slaves that heard all these words.

⁵ ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. ⁶ For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he threw his robe from him and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing; let them not feed, nor drink water: ⁸ but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth and cry mightily unto God; and let each one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.

²¹ Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

⁶⁵ Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

³ ¶ And I will give my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.

⁴³ ¶ And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these sons are my sons, and these sheep are my sheep, and all that thou seest is mine; and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their sons unto whom they have given birth?

²² And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

³¹ And we said unto him, We are men of the truth; we have never been spies.

³⁸ And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; if some disaster should befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol.

²⁹ and if ye take this one also from me and some disaster should befall him, ye shall bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol. ³⁰ Now therefore when I come to thy slave my father, and the lad is not with us, seeing that his soul is bound up in the lad’s soul, ³¹ it shall come to pass when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy slaves shall bring the gray hairs of thy slave our father down with sorrow to Sheol.

²⁸ Then Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive; I will go and see him before I die.

¹⁷ And the elders of his house arose and went to him to raise him up from the earth, but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; my sore bled in the night and ceased not; my soul refused to be comforted.

¹ ¶ Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. ² And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

¹ ¶ And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hands of the Ishmeelites, who had brought him down there. ² But the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prospered man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. ³ And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. ⁴ So Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. ⁵ And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. ⁶ And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and with him knew of nothing more than of the bread which he ate. And Joseph was handsome and well favoured. ⁷ ¶ And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. ⁸ But he refused and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand; ⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but thee because thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? ¹⁰ And it came to pass as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not hearken unto her, to lie by her or to be with her. ¹¹ And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business, and none of those of the house were there within. ¹² And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he left his garment in her hand and fled and got outside. ¹³ ¶ And it came to pass when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled forth, ¹⁴ that she called unto those of her house and spoke unto them, saying, See, he has brought in a Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice; ¹⁵ and it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me and fled and left. ¹⁶ And she laid up his garment by her until his lord came home. ¹⁷ And she spoke unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew slave, whom thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to dishonour me; ¹⁸ and when I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me and fled out. ¹⁹ ¶ And it came to pass when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke unto him, saying, After this manner did thy slave treat me, that his wrath was kindled. ²⁰ And Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound; and he was there in the prison. ²¹ But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy and gave him grace in the sight of the prince of the house of the prison. ²² And the prince of the house of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatever they did there, he was the doer of it. ²³ The prince of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

⁴ And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they continued for days in prison.

⁸ ¶ And in the fifth month, on the seventh of the month, which was the year nineteen of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, a slave of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem.

¹⁰ ¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven eunuchs that served in the presence of Ahasuerus, the king,

³ ¶ Neither let the son of the stranger that has joined himself to the LORD speak, saying, The LORD shall utterly separate me from his people: nor let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
