⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him and a taunting enigma against him and say, Woe to him that multiplied that which was not his! And for how long would he pile thick clay upon himself?

⁷ And he took up his parable and said, Balak, the king of Moab, has brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob and come, denounce Israel.

¹⁸ Then he took up his parable and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:

¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper’s tongue shall slay him. ¹⁷ He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. ¹⁸ He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. ¹⁹ Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build, ²⁰ therefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired. ²¹ Nothing is left that he did not eat; therefore, his goods shall not last. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ ¶ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food. ²⁴ He shall flee from the weapons of iron, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. ²⁵ He shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath. ²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God and the heritage that God appoints unto him by his word.

⁶ For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore, snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubles thee

³ LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

¹⁶ ¶ He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches and who gives to the rich shall surely come to want.

⁴ ¶ that thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon and say, How has the oppressor ceased! The city that covets gold has ceased! ⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked and the sceptre of the rulers ⁶ who smote the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the Gentiles in anger and who did not defend the persecuted. ⁷ The whole earth is at rest and is quiet; they sing praises. ⁸ Even the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. ⁹ Sheol from beneath is aghast at thee; it stirs up the dead to meet thee at thy coming; it has raised up from their thrones all the princes of the earth, all the kings of the Gentiles. ¹⁰ They all shall shout and say unto thee, Art thou also become sick as we? Art thou become like unto us? ¹¹ Thy pride is brought down to Sheol, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. ¹² How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, who didst claim the Gentiles as an inheritance! ¹³ Thou who said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven; upon high next to the stars of God I will exalt my throne: and I will sit upon the mount of the testimony and in the sides of the north; ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. ¹⁵ Yet thou shalt be cast down to Sheol, to the sides of the pit. ¹⁶ Those that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble; that shook the kingdoms; ¹⁷ that made the world as a wilderness and destroyed the cities thereof; that did not open the prison to his prisoners? ¹⁸ All the kings of the Gentiles, even all of them, lie in glory, each one in his own house. ¹⁹ But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that went down to the bottom of the pit, as a carcase trodden under feet.

²⁰ The ashes feed him; his deceived heart inclines him, that he not deliver his soul and say, Is not the lie at my right hand?

² Why do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

²² and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

¹³ Because of the wrath of the LORD, she shall not be inhabited, but she shall be completely desolate; every one that goes by Babylon shall be astonished and hiss at all her plagues.

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel, he has swallowed me up like a dragon; he has filled his belly with my delicates; he has cast me out. ³⁵ The violence against me and my flesh be upon Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.

²¹ The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of Sheol with those that help him: they are gone down; they lie with the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.

⁴ In that time shall one take up a saying against you and lament with a doleful lamentation and say, We have been utterly destroyed; he has changed the portion of my people; how has he taken our fields! He has given and divided our fields unto others.

⁹ All of her shall come for the prey, before their faces an east wind, and they shall gather the captives as the sand. ¹⁰ And he shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto him, he shall deride every fortress and shall heap dust and take it.

¹⁵ He shall take up all of them with his hook; he shall catch them in his net and gather them in his drag: therefore, he shall rejoice and be glad.

¹³ Is this not of the LORD of the hosts? Therefore the peoples shall labour for the fire, and the Gentiles shall weary themselves in vain.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

²⁹ But this I say, brothers, the time is short; for the rest, let those that have wives be as though they had none; ³⁰ and those that weep, as though they wept not; and those that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and those that buy, as though they possessed not; ³¹ and those that use this world, as not using it as their own, for the fashion of this world passes away.

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts.

⁷ ¶ But the end of all things is at hand; be ye, therefore, temperate and watch unto prayer.
