¹ ¶ The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, ² Thus hath the LORD, the God of Israel said unto thee, O Baruch: ³ Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the LORD has added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I have found no rest. ⁴ Thus shalt thou say unto him, The LORD said thus: Behold, I destroy those whom I have built up and those whom I have planted I pluck up, even this whole land. ⁵ And dost thou seek great things for thyself? seek them not; for, behold, I bring evil upon all flesh, said the LORD: but I will give thee thy life as a spoil of battle in all places where thou goest.

⁶ ¶ And the LORD repented of having made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. ⁷ And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast and the animals and the fowls of the air; for I repent of having made them.

¹² And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.

³⁴ Then Jacob rent his clothes and put sackcloth upon his loins and mourned for his son many days. ³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

³⁶ And Jacob, their father, said unto them, Ye have bereaved me of my sons: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; all these things are upon me. ³⁷ And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I do not bring him to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. ³⁸ And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; if some disaster should befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol.

¹¹ And Moses said unto the LORD, Why hast thou afflicted thy slave and why have I not found grace in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all these people upon me? ¹² Have I conceived all these people? Have I begotten them, that thou should say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nurse carries a sucking child, unto the land which thou hast sworn unto their fathers? ¹³ Where should I find flesh to give unto all these people? For they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh that we may eat. ¹⁴ I am not able to bear all these people alone because it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ And if thou must deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found grace in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁷ And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, why hast thou caused this people to pass the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? We should have been content and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! ⁸ O Lord, what shall I say now that Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! ⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it and shall compass us around and cut off our name from upon the earth; then what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

²⁶ Then he said unto him, Did not my heart go with thee when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money and to receive garments and oliveyards and vineyards and sheep and oxen and menslaves and maidslaves?

⁵ Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem, and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God.

¹¹ God has delivered me unto the liar, and in the hands of the wicked he has caused me to tremble. ¹² I was prosperous, but he has broken me asunder; he has taken me by my neck and shaken me to pieces and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compassed me round about; he cleaved my kidneys asunder and did not spare; he poured out my gall upon the ground.

² Today I will also speak with bitterness; my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; all the night I flood my bed; I water my couch with my tears.

¹³ I had fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

⁷ Deep calls unto deep at the voice of thy waterspouts; all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

³ I am weary of my crying; my throat is dried; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

³ I remembered God and cried out; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah. ⁴ Thou didst hold my eyelids open; I am broken and did not speak.

⁸ ¶ Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt; thou hast cast out the Gentiles and planted it. ⁹ Thou didst prepare room before it and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the earth. ¹⁰ The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and its boughs were like the cedars of God. ¹¹ She sent out her boughs unto the sea and her branches unto the river. ¹² Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all those who pass by the way pluck her? ¹³ The boar out of the wood wastes it, and the wild beast of the field devours it. ¹⁴ Return, we beseech thee, O God of the hosts: look down from heaven and behold and visit this vine ¹⁵ and the vineyard which thy right hand has planted and the branch that thou didst make strong for thyself. ¹⁶ It is burned with fire; it is cut down; they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

⁵ ¶ Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!

¹⁰ ¶ If thou art slack in the day of tribulation, thy strength shall be reduced.

² and he had fenced it and gathered out the stones thereof and planted it with the choicest vine and built a tower in the midst of it and also made a winepress therein; and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. ³ And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Therefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes? ⁵ And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down its wall, and it shall be trodden down: ⁶ And I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned, nor hoed; but briers and thorns shall come up there; I will even command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. ⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of the hosts is the house of Israel and every man of Judah his pleasant plant; and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

⁹ In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the Angel of his face saved them: with his love and with his clemency he redeemed them; and he bore them and carried them all the days of the age.

¹⁶ For by fire and by his sword will the LORD judge all flesh; and the slain of the LORD shall be multiplied.

¹⁰ See, I have placed thee in this day over Gentiles and over kingdoms, to root out, and to destroy, and to throw out, and to cast down, to build, and to plant.

¹⁸ Because of my strong sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

¹ ¶ Oh that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

¹⁷ For the LORD of the hosts, that planted thee, has pronounced evil against thee for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.

¹⁰ ¶ Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them curses me. ¹¹ The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction. ¹² Shall iron break the iron from the place of the north wind and the bronze? ¹³ Thy riches and thy treasures I will give to the spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders. ¹⁴ And I will make thee to serve thine enemies in a land which thou dost not know; for a fire is kindled in my anger, which shall burn upon you. ¹⁵ ¶ O LORD, thou knowest: remember me and visit me and revenge me of my enemies; do not take me away in the prolongation of thy anger, know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke. ¹⁶ Thy words were found, and I ate them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for thy name was called upon me, O LORD God of the hosts. ¹⁷ I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, nor did I become puffed up by reason of thy prophecy; I sat alone because thou hast filled me with indignation. ¹⁸ Why was my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar and as waters that fail? ¹⁹ Therefore thus hath the LORD said, If thou wilt return, then I will bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me; and if thou wilt take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth; let them return unto thee, but return not thou unto them. ²⁰ And I will give thee unto this people as a fenced brazen wall, and they shall fight against thee but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to keep thee and to defend thee, said the LORD. ²¹ And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will ransom thee out of the hand of the strong.

⁷ In an instant I shall speak against Gentiles and against kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down and to destroy. ⁸ But if these Gentiles shall turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. ⁹ And in an instant I shall speak concerning the nation and concerning the kingdom, to build and to plant it; ¹⁰ but if it should do evil in my sight, not hearing my voice, then I will repent of the good that I had determined to do unto them.

⁷ ¶ O LORD, thou hast seduced me, and I was seduced; thou wert stronger than I and hast overcome me; I am in derision daily; every one mocks me. ⁸ For since I spoke out, I raised my voice crying, Violence and destruction; because the word of the LORD has been a reproach unto me and a derision, daily. ⁹ And I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But he was in my heart as a burning fire and within my bones; I tried to forbear, and I could not. ¹⁰ For I heard the murmuring of many, fear on every side, Report, and we will report it. All my friends watched to see if I would stumble. Peradventure he will deceive himself, they said, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. ¹¹ But the LORD is with me as a powerful giant; therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper; they shall have everlasting confusion which shall never be forgotten. ¹² O LORD of the hosts, who examines that which is just, who seest the kidneys and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them; for unto thee I have opened my cause. ¹³ Sing unto the LORD, praise ye the LORD; for he has delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers. ¹⁴ ¶ Cursed be the day in which I was born; do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew and did not repent; and let him hear the cry in the morning and the shouting at noontide ¹⁷ because he did not slay me in the womb, and my mother would have been my grave, and her womb perpetual conception. ¹⁸ Why did I come forth out of the womb? To see labour and sorrow that my days should be consumed with shame?

⁹ He that abides in this city shall die by the sword or by the famine or by the pestilence, but he that goes out and falls to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his soul shall be unto him for a spoil.

¹ ¶ The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, which is the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon;

²⁶ and to all the kings of the north wind, those of far and those of near, one with another and to all the kingdoms of the earth, which are upon the face of the earth and the king of Sheshach {Babylon} shall drink after them.

¹ ¶ In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD, saying,

²⁸ And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up and to break down and to throw down and to destroy and to afflict, so will I watch over them, to build and to plant, said the LORD.

¹² And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel my uncle’s son and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase before all the Jews that were in the court of the guard.

¹⁶ ¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying,

¹ ¶ And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

⁴ Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.

⁸ And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORD’s house. ⁹ ¶ And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people of Jerusalem and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.

¹⁴ Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand and came unto them. ¹⁵ And they said unto him, Sit down now and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears. ¹⁶ Now it came to pass when they had heard all the words, each one turned to his companion in fear, and they said unto Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words. ¹⁷ And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth? ¹⁸ Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.

²⁶ But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but the LORD hid them.

³² Then Jeremiah took another roll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire, and there were added besides upon them many like words.

² Thus hath the LORD said, He that remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he that goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey and shall live.

¹⁸ For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee, because thou hast put thy trust in me, said the LORD.

³ but Baruch the son of Neriah sets thee on against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death and carry us away captives into Babylon. ⁴ So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the princes of the armies and all the people, did not hear the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah. ⁵ But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the princes of the armies, took all the remnant of Judah, that had returned from among all the Gentiles, where they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah; ⁶ men and women and children and the king’s daughters, and every soul that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah;

¹³ Mem From upon high he has sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; he has spread a net for my feet; he has turned me back; he has made me desolate and always with pain.

²² Tau Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them as thou hast done unto me for all my rebellions; for my sighs are many, and my heart is filled with pain.

¹ ¶ Aleph I am a man that sees affliction in the rod of his wrath. ² Aleph He has led me and brought me into darkness, but not into light. ³ Aleph Surely he is turned against me; he turns his hand against me all the day. ⁴ Beth My flesh and my skin he has made old; he has broken my bones. ⁵ Beth He has built against me and compassed me with gall and travail. ⁶ Beth He has set me in dark places as those that are dead for ever. ⁷ Gimel He has hedged me about that I cannot get out; he has made my chain heavy. ⁸ Gimel Even when I cried and shouted, he shut out my prayer. ⁹ Gimel He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; he has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ Daleth He was unto me as a bear lying in wait and as a lion in secret places. ¹¹ Daleth He has made my ways crooked and pulled me in pieces; he has made me desolate. ¹² Daleth He has bent his bow and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my kidneys. ¹⁴ He I was a derision to all my people and their song every day. ¹⁵ He He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood. ¹⁶ Vau He has broken my teeth with gravel stones; he has covered me with ashes. ¹⁷ Vau My soul removed itself far from peace; I forgot about good. ¹⁸ Vau And I said, My strength and my hope of the LORD is perished. ¹⁹ Zain Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

³² Caph But though he causes grief, yet he will also have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

⁸ ¶ Therefore wait for me, said the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey; for my judgment is to gather the Gentiles, that I may assemble the kingdoms to pour upon them my indignation, even all my fierce anger; for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

²⁵ ¶ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment? ²⁶ Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are ye not much better than they? ²⁷ Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? ²⁸ And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; ²⁹ and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ³⁰ Therefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what shall we be clothed? ³² For the Gentiles seek after all these things.) For your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.

⁷ But go tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him as he said unto you.

¹⁶ Be unanimous among yourselves, not high minded, but accommodating the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

²⁶ I hold, therefore, this to be good because of the present distress, that it is good for a man to be thus: ²⁷ Art thou bound unto a wife? Seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? Seek not a wife. ²⁸ But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have affliction in the flesh, but I forbear you. ²⁹ But this I say, brothers, the time is short; for the rest, let those that have wives be as though they had none; ³⁰ and those that weep, as though they wept not; and those that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and those that buy, as though they possessed not; ³¹ and those that use this world, as not using it as their own, for the fashion of this world passes away. ³² But I would have you without worry. He that is unmarried cares for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord;

⁴ who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

¹ ¶ Therefore seeing we have this ministry, according to the mercy we have received, we fault not,

¹⁶ Therefore we fault not; but though our outward man is wearing out, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

⁶ Nevertheless God, who comforts the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

⁹ And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.

¹³ But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

⁶ ¶ But piety with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. ⁸ So that, sustenance and covering, let us be content with this. ⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

¹⁸ For in that he himself has suffered and was tempted, he is also powerful to help those that are tempted.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

³ For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied in your souls and faint. ⁴ ¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, fighting against sin. ⁵ And ye have quite forgotten the consolation which speaks unto you as unto sons, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art reproved of him:

⁵ Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have; for he has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
