Thou hast blessed the work of his hands; therefore, his substance has increased in the land. ¹¹ But put forth thy hand now and touch all that he has, and thou shalt see if he will not blaspheme thee to thy face. ¹² And the LORD said to Satan, Behold, all that he has is in thy power; only upon himself do not put forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. ¹³ ¶ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁴ and a messenger came unto Job and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them; ¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, another came who said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven and has burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there another came and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ²⁰ ¶ Then Job arose and rent his mantle and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshipped ²¹ and said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. ²² In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with folly.

¹⁹ in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread until thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken, for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

²⁴ And there came a fire out from before the LORD and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat, which when all the people saw, they praised and fell on their faces.

¹⁰ ¶ In that season the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the sons of Israel; and this son of the Israelite woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp; ¹¹ and the Israelite woman’s son pronounced the Name and cursed; and they brought him unto Moses. ¹ ¶ And it came to pass that the people complained in an evil manner in the ears of the LORD, and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burnt among them and consumed in the uttermost parts of the camp. ² Then the people cried unto Moses, and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched. ³ And he called the name of the place Taberah because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.

³ (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

⁷ My slave Moses is not so, who is faithful in all my house. ⁸ With him I will speak mouth to mouth and by sight not by enigmas; he shall see the similitude of the LORD. Why then were ye not afraid to speak against my slave Moses?

⁷ And he took up his parable and said, Balak, the king of Moab, has brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob and come, denounce Israel.

³² And the prey, that is the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep ³³ and seventy-two thousand oxen ³⁴ and sixty-one thousand asses

¹³ and he will love thee and bless thee and multiply thee; he will also bless the fruit of thy womb and the fruit of thy land, thy grain and thy wine and thine oil, the increase of thy cows and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he swore unto thy fathers to give thee.

¹⁸ And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water because of all your sins in which ye sinned in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

² and all these blessings shall come upon thee and overtake thee when thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. ³ Blessed shalt thou be in the city and blessed shalt thou be in the field. ⁴ Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground and the fruit of thy beasts, the increase of thy cows, and the flocks of thy sheep. ⁵ Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. ⁶ Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

¹¹ Bless, O LORD, his ministry, {Heb. men of valour} and take pleasure in the work of his hands; smite through the loins of those that rise up against him and of those that hate him that they may never rise again.

²⁷ The habitation of God is eternal, and underneath the everlasting arms; he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee and shall say, Destroy them.

⁷ Only be thou strong and very courageous that thou mayest keep and do according to all the law, which Moses my slave commanded thee; turn not from it to the right hand or to the left that thou may be prospered in all the things that thou doest.

⁵ But now that it is come upon thee, thou art grieved; it touches thee, and thou art troubled.

² Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances! ³ For it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up.

²² ¶ One thing remains, that I say, He consumes the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If it is the scourge, it slays suddenly, and it does not laugh at the trial of the innocent.

⁴ He who invokes God and he answers him is mocked by his friend; the just and perfect man is laughed to scorn.

¹³ ¶ Listen to me, and I will speak, and afterward let come on me what will.

¹⁴ He broke me with breach upon breach; he ran upon me like a giant.

⁸ Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite. ⁹ The righteous shall hold on to his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.

⁹ He has stripped me of my glory and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He has pulled me up on every side, and I am dried up; he has caused my hope to pass like an uprooted tree.

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

¹⁴ Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?

⁹ The princes would refrain from talking and lay their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ the voice of the principals would not be noticed, and their tongue would cleave to the roof of their mouth.

²⁵ I approved their way and sat at the head and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

¹ ¶ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a maid? ² For what reward would God give me from above and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is there no destruction for the wicked? And banishment for the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with falsehood or if my foot has hastened to deceit, ⁶ let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned out of the way and my heart walked after my eyes and if any blot has cleaved to my hands, ⁸ then let me sow, and let another eat, and let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ ¶ If my heart has been deceived regarding a woman, or if I have laid in wait at my neighbour’s door, ¹⁰ then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is lewdness and iniquity that is proven. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes unto hell and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb) ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate; ²² then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint. ²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power. ²⁴ ¶ If I have made gold my hope or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much;

Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince I would go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners; ⁴⁰ let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. ¹⁰ ¶ Therefore, hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

¹⁴ If he were to set his heart upon man and gather unto himself his spirit and his breath,

¹⁸ Is it fit to say to the king, Thou art of Belial and to the princes, Ye are ungodly? ¹⁹ How much less to him who is not a respecter of the persons of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

A Psalm of David the slave of the LORD. ¶ The rebellion of the wicked saith to my heart that there is no fear of God before his eyes.

⁴ Afterward the Lord GOD showed me this: And, behold, the Lord GOD called to judge by fire, and it devoured the great deep and ate up the inheritance.

⁶ For, behold, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which march through the breadth of the earth to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, come forth the evil thoughts, the adulteries, the fornications, the murders, ²² the thefts, the covetousness, the wickedness, the deceit, the lasciviousness, the evil eye, the slander, the pride, the unwiseness: ²³ all these evil things come out from within and defile the man.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.

⁷ And shall not God avenge his own elect who cry day and night unto him though he bears long regarding them?

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with excess and drunkenness and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

²⁶ Then Paul took the men and the next day, purifying himself with them, entered into the temple to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification until an offering should be offered for each one of them.

⁴ And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet vengeance does not suffer him to live.

²⁰ Rather, O man, who art thou to reply against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

⁵ Therefore, judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each one have praise of God.

¹³ No temptation has taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

² For I am jealous over you with the jealousy of God, for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to the Christ.
