¹ ¶ After this Job opened his mouth and cursed his day. ² And Job spoke and said, ³ Let the day perish in which I was born and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived. ⁴ Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above; neither let the light shine upon it. ⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death redeem it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months. ⁷ O, let that night be solitary; let no song come therein! ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning. ⁹ Let the stars of its dawn be darkened; they waited for light, but have none; neither let them see the dawning of the day; ¹⁰ because it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb nor hide the misery from my eyes. ¹¹ ¶ Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the belly? ¹² Why did the knees receive me? Of what use the breasts that I should suck? ¹³ For now I should have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then I would have been at rest, ¹⁴ with the kings and the counsellors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves; ¹⁵ or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver. ¹⁶ Or, why was I not hidden as an untimely birth, as infants who never saw light? ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together, they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master. ²⁰ ¶ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ who long for death, but it comes not; and search for it more than for hid treasures; ²² who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they can find the grave; ²³ to the man who does not know which way he goes and whom God has hedged in? ²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters. ²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. ²⁶ I never had prosperity, nor did I secure myself, neither was I at rest; yet trouble came.

¹¹ But put forth thy hand now and touch all that he has, and thou shalt see if he will not blaspheme thee to thy face.

²² In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with folly.

⁵ But put forth thy hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and thou shalt see if he does not blaspheme thee to thy face.

⁹ Then his wife said unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Blaspheme God and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

³ Let the day perish in which I was born and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

¹⁶ therefore, Job opened his mouth in vain and multiplied words without knowledge.

² I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. ³ My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue,

³³ Because they provoked his spirit to rebel, and he spoke it with his lips.

¹⁴ ¶ Cursed be the day in which I was born; do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.

¹⁴ ¶ Then the five men that had gone to spy out the land of Laish said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod and teraphim and a graven image and a molten image? Now, therefore, consider what ye have to do.

¹⁸ Why then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the spirit and no eye had seen me! ¹⁹ I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

¹⁰ ¶ Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them curses me.

¹⁴ ¶ Cursed be the day in which I was born; do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew and did not repent; and let him hear the cry in the morning and the shouting at noontide ¹⁷ because he did not slay me in the womb, and my mother would have been my grave, and her womb perpetual conception. ¹⁸ Why did I come forth out of the womb? To see labour and sorrow that my days should be consumed with shame?

²² And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven, and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. ²³ They did not see one another, neither did any rise from his place for three days; but all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings.

¹² a land which the LORD thy God procures; the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

² a day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of shadow that spreads itself upon the mountains as the dawn: a people great and strong; there has not ever been the like, neither shall there be any more after him, even to the years of many generations.

¹⁸ Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD shall be darkness, and not light.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

²⁰ And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then lost.

¹⁰ And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the throne of the beast; and its kingdom was filled with darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

¹¹ And ye came near and stood under the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of the heavens, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

²¹ before I go, to not return, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁶ My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death,

¹⁷ For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; if they are known, the terrors of the shadow of death come over them.

³ He set a border unto the darkness, and unto every perfect work that he made, he placed a stone of darkness and shadow of death.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? Or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff shall comfort me.

¹⁹ though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons and covered us with the shadow of death.

¹⁰ ¶ Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and in irons,

¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their bonds asunder.

² The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; those that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

⁶ Neither did they say, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through and where no man dwelt?

²⁸ For this shall the earth be made desolate, and the heavens above be darkened because I spoke; I purposed and did not repent, neither will I turn back from it.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God before he causes darkness and before your feet stumble in mountains of darkness, and while ye look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death and makes it gross darkness.

³ For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the Gentiles.

¹² As the shepherd recognizes his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered, so will I recognize my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

⁸ look unto him that makes the seven stars and Orion and turns the shadow of death into the morning and makes the day dark with night, that calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name;

¹⁰ and I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; and I will cause sackcloth to be brought up upon all loins and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son and the end thereof as a bitter day.

¹⁶ the people who sat in darkness saw great light, and to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up.

⁷⁹ to give light to those that dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace.

¹⁸ ¶ For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched and that burned with fire nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest

²⁰ It shall never again be inhabited; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation; neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there, neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. ²¹ But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures, and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there. ²² And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their palaces, and dragons in their pleasant palaces; and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

⁸ The mirth of tambourines ceases; the noise of those that rejoice ends; the joy of the harp ceases.

³⁴ Then I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

²² And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatever craft he is, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; ²³ and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth in whose witchcraft all the Gentiles have erred.

²⁵ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah; and all the singing men and the singing women spoke of Josiah in their lamentations to this day and made them an ordinance in Israel, which are written in the lamentations.

¹ ¶ Canst thou draw out leviathan with a hook or with the cord which thou lettest down on his tongue?

¹⁰ No one is so bold as to dare stir him up; who then shall be able to stand before me?

²⁵ Of his greatness, the mighty are afraid; by reason of breakings they remove sin from themselves.

¹⁷ Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said, Consider ye and call for the mourning women that they may come and send for cunning women that they may come, ¹⁸ and let them make haste and take up a wailing for us that our eyes may run down with tears and our eyelids gush out with waters.

¹⁶ ¶ Therefore the LORD, the God of the hosts, the Lord, said this: Wailing shall be in all streets, and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

¹⁷ and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

³⁸ And they came to the house of the prince of the synagogue and saw the tumult and those that wept and wailed greatly.

²⁶ When I expected good, then evil came unto me; and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

¹⁸ By his sneezings lights are lit, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

¹⁵ We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

¹⁸ For the LORD had completely closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

³¹ ¶ And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

⁵ But unto Hannah he would give a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah, even though the LORD had shut up her womb.

² Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances! ³ For it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up.

¹ ¶ My soul is cut off in my life; therefore, I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

² Today I will also speak with bitterness; my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

³ If a man begets a hundred sons and lives many years so that the days of his years are many, if his soul is not filled with good and also that he have no burial; I say that an aborted birth is better than he. ⁴ For he came in vain and departs unto darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. ⁵ Even though he has not seen the sun nor known any thing; this one has more rest than the other.

¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.

¹⁷ because he did not slay me in the womb, and my mother would have been my grave, and her womb perpetual conception.

⁹ But thou art he that took me out of the womb; thou hast made me wait upon thee since I was upon my mother’s breasts. ¹⁰ I was cast upon thee from the womb; thou art my God from my mother’s belly.

⁸ As a snail which melts, let them pass away, like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

⁶ By thee have I been sustained from the womb; thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels; my praise has been continually of thee.

¹³ For thou hast possessed my kidneys: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. ¹⁴ I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are thy works, and that, my soul knows right well. ¹⁵ My body was not hid from thee, even though I was made in secret and brought together in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Thine eyes did see my substance yet being imperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which were then formed, without lacking one of them.

³ Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb:

¹⁴ Give them, O LORD, that which thou must give them; give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

³ And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim’s sons unto the third generation; the sons also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.

¹² For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream; then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

⁴ And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all. ⁵ No eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have mercy upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field with little value given to thy life, in the day that thou wast born.

⁸ The eyes of those that see me now shall not see me again; thine eyes shall be upon me, and I will cease to be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he that goes down to Sheol, who shall not come up again; ¹⁰ he shall return no more to his house; neither shall his place know him any more.

²¹ And why dost thou not take away my rebellion and pass over my iniquity? For now I shall sleep in the dust; and if thou shalt seek me in the morning, I shall not be found.

²² land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁰ But when man shall die and be cut off, and the man shall perish, where shall he be? ¹¹ The waters from the sea went, and the river ran out, it dried up. ¹² So man lies down and does not rise; until there is no heaven, they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep.

¹³ If I wait, Sheol is my house; I have made my bed in the darkness.

²⁷ whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another, though my kidneys be consumed within me.

¹³ They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.

²³ This one shall die in the full strength of his beauty, being completely at ease and quiet.

¹⁰ Whatever thy hand finds to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, where thou goest.

¹⁰ And David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.

⁴³ And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, his father; and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

¹⁷ He causes the counsellors to walk away stripped of counsel and makes the judges to be fools.

²⁸ and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.

²³ For I know that thou dost conduct me unto death and to the house appointed for all living.

⁶ ¶ Those that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ none of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him; ⁸ (for the redemption of their soul is of great price, and they shall never pay it) ⁹ that he should still live for ever and not see corruption. ¹⁰ For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others.

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.

⁴⁸ What man is he that lives and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of Sheol? Selah.

⁸ There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death, and weapons are of no use in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

⁸ ¶ Woe unto those that join house to house, that lay field to field, until they have done away with the borders! Will ye dwell alone in the midst of the earth?

¹⁰ They all shall shout and say unto thee, Art thou also become sick as we? Art thou become like unto us? ¹¹ Thy pride is brought down to Sheol, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. ¹² How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, who didst claim the Gentiles as an inheritance! ¹³ Thou who said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven; upon high next to the stars of God I will exalt my throne: and I will sit upon the mount of the testimony and in the sides of the north; ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. ¹⁵ Yet thou shalt be cast down to Sheol, to the sides of the pit. ¹⁶ Those that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble; that shook the kingdoms;

¹² And they shall build up out of thee the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the fallen foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

²⁰ And I shall bring thee down with those that descend into the grave, with the people of the age, and shall set thee in the lowest part of the earth, as the deserts of old, with those that go down to the grave, that thou not be inhabited again; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;

¹⁸ Damascus was thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the abundance of all riches, with wine of Helbon and white wool. ¹⁹ Dan also and Greece and Mozel traded in thy fairs bright iron, cassia, and calamus. ²⁰ Dedan was thy merchant in precious cloth for chariots. ²¹ Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, merchants of thy strength in lambs and rams and he goats: in these they were thy merchants. ²² The merchants of Sheba and Raamah; they were thy merchants: they traded in thy fairs with the chief of all spices and with all precious stones and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad were in thy market. ²⁴ These, thy merchants, negotiated with thee in all sorts of things: in blue robes and broidered work and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. ²⁵ The ships of Tarshish, thy squadrons, went forth on thy behalf: and thou wast full, and wast multiplied greatly in the midst of the seas. ²⁶ ¶ In many waters they overcame thy rowers; the east wind has broken thee in the midst of the seas. ²⁷ Thy riches, and thy markets, thy business, thy rowers, and thy pilots, those that repair thy breaches, and the agents of thy business, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, with all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin. ²⁸ The suburbs shall shake at the sound of the cry of thy pilots. ²⁹ And all that handle the oar, the rowers, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land ³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard upon thee and shall cry bitterly and shall cast up dust upon their heads; they shall wallow themselves in the ashes. ³¹ And they shall pull out their hair for thee and gird themselves with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of soul and bitter wailings. ³² And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee and lament over thee, saying, Who is like Tyre, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea?

¹⁸ And Balaam answered and said unto the slaves of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do anything small or great.

²⁷ And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedars to be as the sycamore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.

²¹ He pours contempt upon princes and weakens the strength of the mighty.

²⁵ And the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

⁷ Their land is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath, but the whole earth shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all those that dwell in the earth.

³ And Tyre built herself a stronghold and heaped up silver as the dust and fine gold as the mire of the streets.

⁸ And last of all he appeared unto me also, as of one born out of due time.

¹³ O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me covered until thy wrath is past, that thou would appoint me a set time and remember me!

¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of Sheol, and together they shall rest in the dust.

⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me. ⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then I would fly away and be at rest. ⁷ Behold, then I would flee far away and dwell in the wilderness. Selah. ⁸ I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

¹ ¶ The righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. ² He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

²⁸ And fear not those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

⁴ And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of those that kill the body and, after that, have no more that they can do.

⁶ seeing it is a just thing with God to recompense tribulation to those that trouble you ⁷ and to give you, who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with the angels of his power,

⁹ There remains therefore a rest {Gr. Sabbatismos} for the people of God.

¹¹ ¶ Let us therefore make haste to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.

⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, afflicted his righteous soul from day to day with the deeds of those unjust people);

¹³ ¶ And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them.

⁶ And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying, ⁷ Ye shall no longer give the people firewood to make brick as until now; let them go and gather firewood for themselves. ⁸ And the tally of the bricks which they made before, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish any of it; for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

¹⁵ ¶ Then the officers of the sons of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Why doest thou deal thus with thy slaves? ¹⁶ There is no firewood given unto thy slaves, yet they say to us, Make brick. Behold, thy slaves are beaten; and thy people sin. ¹⁷ And he replied, Ye are idle, ye are idle, therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice unto the LORD. ¹⁸ Go therefore now and work, for no firewood shall be given you, yet ye shall deliver the tally of bricks. ¹⁹ Then the officers of the sons of Israel saw that they were afflicted after it was said, Ye shall not diminish any from the bricks of your daily quota.

³ And the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD, for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and he had mightily oppressed the sons of Israel for twenty years.

⁷ He laughs at the multitude of the city, neither does he hearken to the voice of the exactor of tribute.

³ And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow and from thy fear and from the hard bondage in which thou wast made to serve, ⁴ ¶ that thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon and say, How has the oppressor ceased! The city that covets gold has ceased!

² Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling. ¹⁵ ¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah. ¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; ¹⁷ for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him. ¹⁸ Though while he lives, his life shall be blessed: and men will praise thee when thou art prosperous. ¹⁹ He shall enter into the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light forever. ²⁰ Man that is in honour that does not understand is like the beasts that are cut off.

⁵ when they shall also be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and appetite shall fail: because man goes to the home of his age, and the mourners shall go about the streets;

⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was before and the spirit returns unto God who gave it.

²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried; ²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.

²⁷ And as it is appointed unto men to die once, and after this the judgment;

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul and prayed unto the LORD and wept sore;

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God in the mountain, she caught him by the feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone, for her soul is bitter within her; and the LORD has hid it from me and has not revealed it to me.

¹⁶ Or, why was I not hidden as an untimely birth, as infants who never saw light?

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!

¹⁵ And my soul thought it better to be strangled and desired death more than my bones. ¹⁶ I loathed life; I do not desire to live for ever; let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²⁸ God will ransom his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

⁶ And in those days men shall seek death and shall not find it and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

¹⁴ Behold, he shall break down, and it shall not be built again; he shall shut up a man, and no one shall be able to open unto him.

⁶ know now that God has overthrown me and has compassed me with his net.

⁸ ¶ He has walled off my way and I shall not pass, and he has set darkness in my paths.

¹² His troops came together and raised up their way over me and encamp round about my tent.

⁸ and hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy; thou hast set my feet in a wide place.

⁸ Thou hast put away mine acquaintances far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

²⁷ ¶ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest thou, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?

⁷ Gimel He has hedged me about that I cannot get out; he has made my chain heavy.

⁹ Gimel He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; he has made my paths crooked.

⁶ ¶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns and make a wall that she shall not find her paths.

⁷ The things that my soul refused to touch before, now by my sorrow are my food.

¹⁹ For how long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone until I swallow down my spittle?

A Psalm of David. ¶ My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me and from the words of my cry? ² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

⁸ I am feeble and sore broken; I roar by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

³ My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? ⁴ I will remember these things; I will pour out my soul in me. When I shall be included in the number; I will go with them to the house of God with voice of joy and praise, dancing in the multitude.

¹¹ We all roar like bears and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for saving health, but it has withdrawn from us.

¹⁴ then thou dost scare me with dreams and terrify me with visions.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when the tribulation comes upon him?

¹¹ By thy name, O LORD, thou shalt give me life; by thy righteousness thou shalt bring my soul out of trouble.
