¹ ¶ And Job answered and said, ² Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances! ³ For it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me. ⁵ Does the wild ass bray when he has grass? Does the ox low over his fodder? ⁶ Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg? ⁷ The things that my soul refused to touch before, now by my sorrow are my food. ⁸ ¶ Oh, that I might have my request and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! ⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off! ¹⁰ Then should my comfort grow; I would hold on to sorrow without mercy; for I have not contradicted the words of the Holy One. ¹¹ What is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life? ¹² Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of steel? ¹³ Am I not doing all that I can, and even with all this I lack the power to do anything? ¹⁴ ¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream, ¹⁶ which was hidden by ice and covered by snow. ¹⁷ Which in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place; ¹⁸ they turn aside out of the paths of their way; they go to nothing and perish. ¹⁹ The travelers of Tema looked; the traveling companies of Sheba waited for them. ²⁰ They were put to shame because of their hope; they came there and found them confused. ²¹ Now ye are certainly as they; ye have seen the torment and are afraid. ²² ¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance ²³ and deliver me from the enemy’s hand and ransom me from the hand of the mighty? ²⁴ Teach me, and I will be silent; and cause me to understand in what I have erred. ²⁵ How forcible are the words of rectitude! But what does your argument reprove? ²⁶ Are ye not thinking up words of reproof and throw to the wind words that are lost? ²⁷ Ye also overwhelm the fatherless and dig a pit before your friend. ²⁸ Now, therefore, if ye desire, look upon me and see if I shall lie in your presence. ²⁹ Turn now, and there is no iniquity; return again to look for my righteousness in this. ³⁰ If there is iniquity in my tongue or if my taste cannot discern the torments.

¹ ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered and said,

⁵ But now that it is come upon thee, thou art grieved; it touches thee, and thou art troubled.

² Today I will also speak with bitterness; my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

⁶ let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know my integrity.

¹⁹ Teach us what we should say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness. ²⁰ Shall it be told him when I speak? When someone is swallowed up shall it be told him?

⁵ Thou hast increased, O LORD my God, thy wonderful works which thou hast done and thy thoughts regarding us; they are beyond our ability to express, declare, or speak; they cannot be told.

⁴ Thou didst hold my eyelids open; I am broken and did not speak.

³ ¶ A stone is heavy and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

²⁸ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²³ I will heap evils upon them; I will spend my arrows upon them. ²⁴ They shall be consumed with hunger and devoured with burning heat and with bitter destruction; I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood and my sword shall devour flesh, in the blood of the slain and of the captives of the heads, in revenge as an enemy.

¹⁷ For he has broken me with a tempest and has multiplied my wounds without cause.

¹² I was prosperous, but he has broken me asunder; he has taken me by my neck and shaken me to pieces and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compassed me round about; he cleaved my kidneys asunder and did not spare; he poured out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He broke me with breach upon breach; he ran upon me like a giant.

²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

¹⁵ ¶ They have loosed terrors upon me; they fought my will as the wind and my saving health as a cloud that passes.

²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power.

¹³ He has also prepared for him the weapons of death; he ordains his arrows against the persecutors.

¹⁴ He sent out his arrows and scattered them; he shot out lightnings and destroyed them.

¹² Therefore shalt thou separate them; thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presses me sore.

⁵ Thine arrows, by which the peoples fall under thee, penetrate the heart of the enemies of the king.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath goes over me; thy terrors have cut me off.

⁷ ¶ Hear me speedily, O LORD; my spirit fails; hide not thy face from me lest I be like those that go down into the grave.

¹⁴ ¶ The spirit of man will bear his infirmity, but a broken spirit who can bear?

¹² Daleth He has bent his bow and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my kidneys.

³³ And he takes with him Peter and James and John and began to be alarmed and to be anguished ³⁴ and said unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death; tarry ye here, and watch.

³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

¹¹ Therefore being certain of that terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹ To the Overcomer: Maschil,
for the sons of Korah. ¶ As the hart pants after the water brooks, so does my soul pant after thee, O God.

¹⁴ He causes the hay to grow for the cattle and grass for the service of man, that he may bring forth bread out of the earth

⁶ And the wild asses stood in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes failed because there was no grass.

¹⁸ How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed because they have no pasture; the flocks of sheep are condemned. ¹⁹ O LORD, to thee will I cry for the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ The beasts of the field also cry unto thee for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire has devoured the meadows of the wilderness.

¹³ And every offering of thy present shalt thou season with salt, and thou shalt never allow the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy present; with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

²⁵ How forcible are the words of rectitude! But what does your argument reprove?

³⁰ If there is iniquity in my tongue or if my taste cannot discern the torments.

¹¹ Certainly the ear proves words and the mouth tastes foods.

² Many times I have heard such things; miserable comforters are ye all.

³ For the ear tries words, as the mouth tastes food.

¹⁰³ ¶ How sweet have been thy spoken words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

³⁴ Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its savour, with what shall it be seasoned?

⁶ Let your word be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.

⁴ For it is impossible that those who once received the light and tasted of that heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit ⁵ and likewise have tasted the good word of God and the virtue of the age to come,

¹² And she said, As the LORD thy God lives, I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a pitcher and a little oil in a cruse; and now I was gathering two sticks that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.

²⁷ and say, Thus hath the king said, Put this fellow in the prison and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace.

²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

⁹ For I have eaten ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping,

¹⁴ Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul is not defiled: for from my youth up even until now have I not eaten of that which dies of itself, or is torn in pieces; neither has abominable flesh come into my mouth.

¹⁶ Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I break the sustenance of bread in Jerusalem; and they shall eat bread by weight, and with anguish; and they shall drink water by measure, and with terror.

¹⁸ Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking and drink thy water with trembling and with anxiety ¹⁹ and say unto the people of the land, Thus hath the Lord GOD said regarding the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the land of Israel. They shall eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with terror that her land may be desolate from all that is in it because of the violence of all those that dwell therein.

³ I ate no pleasant bread, neither did flesh nor wine come into my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all until the three weeks of days were fulfilled.

¹¹ What is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life? ¹² Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of steel? ¹³ Am I not doing all that I can, and even with all this I lack the power to do anything?

¹⁴ I have said to the pit, Thou art my father; to the worms, my mother, and my sister. ¹⁵ And where shall my hope be now? As for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of Sheol, and together they shall rest in the dust.

⁸¹ ¶ CAPH. My soul faints with desire for thy salvation as I await thy word.

¹⁴ I am not able to bear all these people alone because it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ And if thou must deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found grace in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and desiring to die, he said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers.

²⁰ ¶ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ who long for death, but it comes not; and search for it more than for hid treasures; ²² who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they can find the grave;

¹⁵ And my soul thought it better to be strangled and desired death more than my bones. ¹⁶ I loathed life; I do not desire to live for ever; let me alone; for my days are vanity.

¹³ O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me covered until thy wrath is past, that thou would appoint me a set time and remember me!

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

¹⁰ Behold, I have refined thee, and not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. ¹¹ For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, I will do it, for how should my name be profaned? and I will not give my glory unto another. ¹² Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. ¹³ Certainly my hand founded the earth, and my right hand measured the heavens with the palm; as I named them, they appeared together.

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me, for I would rather die than live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah that he fainted and wished in his soul to die and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁶ And in those days men shall seek death and shall not find it and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

² Speak unto all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say unto them, Ye shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

²⁰ The LORD will not forgive him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

² There is none holy as the LORD, for there is none beside thee; neither is there any strong One like our God.

²² who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they can find the grave;

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has hardened himself against him and remained in peace?

³³ The clods of the river valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall be drawn after him, as there were innumerable before him.

²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

¹² Neither have I separated myself from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

³⁰ Pe The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue brings forth judgment.

⁹ I have preached righteousness in the great congregation; behold, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. ¹⁰ I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy truth and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from the great congregation.

¹⁷ O God, thou hast taught me from my youth and until now; I shall manifest thy wondrous works. ¹⁸ Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not until I have showed the strength of thy arm unto the next generation and thy power to every one that is to come,

¹³ ¶ With my lips I have declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

¹¹ Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to leave our presence. ¹² Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in violence and perversity and build upon this:

¹⁵ For thus has said the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is The Holy One; I dwell in the high place and in holiness and with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit to cause the spirit of the humble to live and to cause the heart of the contrite ones to live.

⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of my anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim; for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee; and I will not enter into the city.

¹² ¶ Art thou not from the beginning, O LORD my God, my Holy One? we shall not die, O LORD, thou hast ordained him for judgment, and thou hast established him strong for chastisement.

³ ¶ God shall come from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was filled with his praise.

²⁰ and how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you and have taught you publicly and from house to house,

²⁷ For I have not refrained from declaring unto you the full counsel of God.

³² He that did not spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also give us all things with him?

⁴ For if God did not forgive the angels that sinned, but cast them down into the deepest abyss {Gr. Tartarus} and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; ⁵ and if he did not forgive the old world, but kept Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven other persons, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

⁷ ¶ And to the angel of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} in Philadelphia write; These things, saith he that is Holy and True, he who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts and shuts, and no one opens;

⁸ ¶ And the four animals had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within, and they did not cease day or night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken and abominable. ⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and are spent without hope. ⁷ ¶ Remember thou that my life is wind and that my eyes shall not return to see good.

²⁰ Are not my days few? Cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

²⁵ Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? Wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

²⁸ And man, is as a rotten thing that is being consumed, as a garment that is moth eaten.

¹ ¶ My breath is corrupt, my days are cut off, and the grave is ready for me.

⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? And if so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before thee; verily every man that lives is altogether vanity. Selah.

⁵ Thou dost cause them to pass by as the waters of a river; they are as a dream, which is strong in the morning like grass. ⁶ In the morning it blossoms and grows up; in the evening it is cut down and withers. ⁷ ¶ For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath we are troubled. ⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. ⁹ For all our days decline because of thy wrath; we end our years according to the word. ¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy, and of the most valiant eighty years, yet their strength is labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

²³ ¶ He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.

¹⁴ For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. ¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass; as an open flower of the field, so he blossoms. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place shall know it no more.

¹⁸ His bones are as strong as brass; his members are like bars of iron.

²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone; as hard as a piece of the lower millstone.

² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you. ³ But I have a heart as well as you; I am not inferior to you; and who shall not be able to say as much again?

² As you know it, I know it; I am not inferior unto you.

²⁸ But ye should say, Why should we persecute him, seeing that the root of the matter is found in me?

² How hast thou helped the one who has no power? Hast thou saved with thy arm the one who has no strength?

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

⁴ But let everyone prove his own work, and then he shall have glory regarding only himself, and not in another.

¹¹ And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.

³ Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Thy words have upheld the one that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees. ⁵ But now that it is come upon thee, thou art grieved; it touches thee, and thou art troubled.

⁴ Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.

⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would assuage the pain.

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David the slave of the LORD. ¶ The rebellion of the wicked saith to my heart that there is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes until his iniquity is found to be hateful. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise and to do good.

¹⁷ ¶ A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

⁴⁰ But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

¹⁵ Rejoice with those that rejoice and weep with those that weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; or if one member is honoured, all the members rejoice together.

²⁹ Who is sick, and I am not sick? who stumbles, and I burn not?

² Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfil the law of the Christ.

³ Remember those that are in bonds as bound with them and those who suffer adversity as being yourselves also in the body.

¹⁹ All my intimate friends abhorred me; and those whom I loved are turned against me.

¹¹ My friends and my companions stand aloof from my sore, and my kinsmen stand afar off.

⁹ Even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it, neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: ¹³ But it was thou, who in my estimation was, my lord, and of my own family. ¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together and walked unto the house of God in company.

¹⁸ Thou hast put lover and friend far from me, and placed my acquaintances into darkness.

⁴ Take heed each one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders. ⁵ And they will deceive each one his neighbour and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

¹⁸ Why was my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar and as waters that fail?

¹⁴ All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they do not seek thee; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the whip of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased.

⁵ Do not believe in a friend, do not trust in a prince; from her that lies at thy side, take care, open not thy mouth. ⁶ For the son dishonours the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies are those of his own house.

¹⁸ ¶ I speak not of you all; I know whom I have chosen; but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me,

³² Behold, the hour comes and is now come, that ye shall be scattered, each one to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

¹² These are spots in your banquets of charity, feeding themselves without any fear whatsoever: clouds without water, carried to and fro of the winds; trees withered as in fall, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹ ¶ Then Elijah, the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹⁹ Drought and heat consume the snow waters; so does Sheol consume those who have sinned.

⁷ And the sons of Cush: Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

³ And Jokshan begat Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.

¹⁵ Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

¹ ¶ And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with enigmas.

¹⁰ The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents; the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

¹⁴ Go ye out to meet them bringing water for the thirsty, O inhabitants of the land of Tema; succour those who are fleeing with your bread.

²³ and to Dedan, and to Tema and to Buz and to all that are in the utmost corners,

²² The merchants of Sheba and Raamah; they were thy merchants: they traded in thy fairs with the chief of all spices and with all precious stones and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad were in thy market.

³ And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded and covered their heads. ⁴ Because the ground is chapped, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

¹³ O hope of Israel! LORD, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed; and those that depart from me shall be written in the dust because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

⁵ and the hope shall not be ashamed, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.

³³ as it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock that will cause some to fall, and whosoever believes in him shall not be ashamed.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. ¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept; and each one rent his mantle and sprinkled dust upon his head toward heaven. ¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word unto him; for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream,

⁴ That ye are certainly forgers of lies; ye are all physicians of no value.

⁹ Surely the sons of Adam are vanity, and the sons of nobles are a lie; to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

⁷ All the brethren of the poor hate him; how much more shall his friends separate themselves from him? He shall seek their friendship and not find it.

²² Cease from man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what is he to be accounted of?

⁵ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said; Cursed be the man that trusts in man and makes flesh his arm and whose heart departs from the LORD. ⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

⁹ We applied the medicine to Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go each one into his own land; for her judgment is come unto heaven and is lifted up even to the clouds.

³¹ ¶ Then Jesus said unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night; for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

⁵⁶ But all this was done that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.

¹⁶ ¶ At my first answer no one stood with me, but all men forsook me: let it not be imputed unto them.

⁹ ¶ And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city; for in one hour is thy judgment come!

¹⁷ For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off ¹⁸ and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city was like unto this great city!

³ Behold, here I am; witness against me before the LORD and before his anointed. If I have taken anyone’s ox or if I have taken anyone’s ass or if I have defrauded anyone or if I have oppressed anyone or if I have received a bribe {Heb. ransom} from anyone to blind my eyes, I will restore it you.

¹¹ Then all his brethren came unto him and all his sisters and all those that had been of his acquaintance before and ate bread with him in his house; and they condoled him and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him; each one also gave him an ewe, and an earring of gold.

³³ I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel.

⁴⁸ after he is sold he shall have redemption; one of his brethren shall redeem him;

⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren, the Jews who had been sold unto the Gentiles; and will ye even sell your brethren? And shall they be sold unto us? Then they remained silent, for they had nothing to answer.

²⁰ In famine he shall ransom thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

⁷ none of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him; ⁸ (for the redemption of their soul is of great price, and they shall never pay it)

¹⁵ ¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah.

² Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy

²¹ And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will ransom thee out of the hand of the strong.

²⁷ Behold that which we have searched out, so it is; hear it and judge it for thyself.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; cause me to understand why thou dost contend with me.

¹¹ Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your arguments, while ye searched out what to say.

¹⁵ ¶ They were amazed, they answered no more; they left off speaking. ¹⁶ And I waited, (for they did not speak, but stopped, and answered no more);

¹ ¶ Therefore, Job, hear now my reasons, and hearken to all my words.

³¹ Hear me, O Job, hearken unto me; be silent, and I will speak. ³² If thou hast anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee. ³³ If not, hearken unto me; be silent, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

³² Teach me that which I do not see; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more.

¹² Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

⁸ I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go; I will fix mine eyes upon thee.

¹ To the Overcomer, even to Jeduthun,
A Psalm of David. ¶ I said, I will take heed to my ways that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bit while the wicked is against me. ² I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹² As an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is he who reproves a wise man who has a docile ear.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

² For we all offend in many things. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to govern the whole body with restraint.

⁴ Thy words have upheld the one that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

⁵ O that ye would altogether be silent! And it would be unto you instead of wisdom.

³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what is it that emboldens thee to answer? ⁴ I also could speak as ye do. I wish your soul were in my soul’s stead, that I could heap up words against you and shake my head at you. ⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would assuage the pain.

³⁴ How then do ye comfort me in vain, given that your answers remain as falsehood?

²⁵ And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar or reduce my speech to nothing?

³ Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

¹⁸ ¶ There are those that speak like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is medicine.

²¹ ¶ The wise in heart is called a man of understanding; and the sweetness of the lips shall increase doctrine. ²² ¶ Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it, but the instruction of fools is folly. ²³ ¶ The heart of the wise causes his mouth to be prudent, and with his lips he shall increase doctrine. ²⁴ ¶ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and medicine to the bones.

²¹ ¶ Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those that love it shall eat its fruit.

¹¹ ¶ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold inscribed with silver.

¹⁰ The preacher sought to find willing words and upright writings, even words of truth. ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads and as nails hammered into place, those of the teachers of the congregations, who are placed under one Shepherd.

¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

³ Let the day perish in which I was born and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived. ⁴ Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above; neither let the light shine upon it. ⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death redeem it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months. ⁷ O, let that night be solitary; let no song come therein! ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning. ⁹ Let the stars of its dawn be darkened; they waited for light, but have none; neither let them see the dawning of the day; ¹⁰ because it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb nor hide the misery from my eyes. ¹¹ ¶ Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the belly? ¹² Why did the knees receive me? Of what use the breasts that I should suck? ¹³ For now I should have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then I would have been at rest, ¹⁴ with the kings and the counsellors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves; ¹⁵ or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver. ¹⁶ Or, why was I not hidden as an untimely birth, as infants who never saw light? ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together, they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master. ²⁰ ¶ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ who long for death, but it comes not; and search for it more than for hid treasures; ²² who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they can find the grave; ²³ to the man who does not know which way he goes and whom God has hedged in? ²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters. ²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. ²⁶ I never had prosperity, nor did I secure myself, neither was I at rest; yet trouble came.

³ Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Thy words have upheld the one that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!

² How long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

¹ ¶ My soul is cut off in my life; therefore, I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

³ For the ear tries words, as the mouth tastes food. ⁴ Let us choose our judgment; let us know among ourselves what is good. ⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my right. ⁶ In my judgment he was a liar, my arrow wound is grievous without my having committed a transgression. ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water? ⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he said, It shall profit a man nothing that he should conform his will with God.

² Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

⁵ Once I have spoken; but I will not answer; even twice, but I will proceed no further.

⁸ Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

⁷ ¶ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz, the Temanite, My wrath has been kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, as my slave Job has.

¹ ¶ Ephraim feeds on wind and follows after the east wind; he daily increases lies and desolation because they made a covenant with the Assyrians, and the oil is carried into Egypt.

³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

¹⁴ That we no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive,

²² Ye shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. ²³ If thou afflict them in any manner, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; ²⁴ and my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor.

¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him.

¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;

²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate;

¹⁵ He made a pit and deepened it and shall fall into the ditch which he made.

⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down; they have dug a pit before me, into the midst of which they are fallen themselves. Selah.

³ Do right concerning the poor and fatherless; do justice to the poor and destitute.

¹⁰ ¶ Do not remove the old landmark, and do not enter into the inheritance of the fatherless: ¹¹ For their redeemer is mighty; he shall judge their cause against thee.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them and to turn away thy wrath from them.

²² Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have dug a pit to take me and hid snares for my feet.

⁷ In thee they have despised father and mother; in the midst of thee they have dealt by oppression with the stranger; in thee they have vexed the fatherless and the widow.

³ And they have cast lots for my people and have given a boy for a harlot and sold a girl for wine that they might drink.

¹⁰ Yet she was carried away, she went into captivity; her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her nobles were bound in chains.

⁵ And I will come near unto you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against false swearers and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and do not fear me, said the LORD of the hosts.

²⁷ The pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep thyself unspotted from this world.

³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.

³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

⁴ my lips shall not speak iniquity, nor my tongue utter deceit.

³ My reasons declare the uprightness of my heart; and my lips shall utter pure knowledge.

⁴ For truly my words are not lies; for I share perfect knowledge with thee.

¹⁰ ¶ But return all of you, and come now; for I shall not find one that is wise among you.

¹⁰ But he has known the way that I take; he has tried me, and I have come forth as gold.

⁴ my lips shall not speak iniquity, nor my tongue utter deceit. ⁵ In no wise should I justify you; until I die I will not remove my integrity from me. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my right.

⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁸ Therefore become ye converted, and ye shall make a difference between the just and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that did not serve him.

⁶ Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

⁸ ¶ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without rebellion, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, God sought occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ he put my feet in the stocks, he guards all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this thou art not just; I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ⁴ Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask of thee, and thou shalt cause me to know. ⁵ With my ears I had heard thee; but now my eyes see thee. ⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁴ But strong food belongs to those that are perfect, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
