¹ ¶ Then Bildad, the Shuhite, answered and said, ² How long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind? ³ Shall God pervert that which is right or shall the Almighty pervert justice? ⁴ Because thy sons sinned against him, he cast them away in the place of their rebellion; ⁵ if thou would seek God early and make thy supplication to the Almighty, ⁶ if thou wert pure and upright, surely now he would awake upon thee and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous. ⁷ In such a way that thy beginning would have been small, in comparison to the great increase of thy latter. ⁸ ¶ Ask, I pray thee, of the former age, and be willing to enquire of thy fathers regarding them; ⁹ for we are but of yesterday and know nothing because our days upon earth are as a shadow. ¹⁰ Shall they not teach thee and tell thee and utter these words out of their heart? ¹¹ Can the rush grow up without mire? Can the meadow grow without water? ¹² Whilst it is yet in its greenness and not cut down, it withers before any other herb. ¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God, and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish. ¹⁴ For his hope shall be cut off, and his trust is a spider’s web. ¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand; he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. ¹⁶ Like a tree, he is green before the sun, and his branches go forth over his garden; ¹⁷ his roots weave themselves around a spring and secure themselves even in a stony place. ¹⁸ If he is uprooted from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee. ¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth from where he was transplanted, others shall grow. ²⁰ ¶ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man; neither will he help the evil doers. ²¹ He will yet fill thy mouth with laughing and thy lips with shouts of joy. ²² Those that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

³ Then Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh and said unto him, Thus hath the LORD God of the Hebrews said, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? Let my people go that they may serve me.

⁷ Then Pharaoh’s slaves said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God; knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

¹¹ And he said, Go forth and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!

²⁶ Are ye not thinking up words of reproof and throw to the wind words that are lost?

¹¹ Therefore, I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what is it that emboldens thee to answer?

² How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? Understand, and afterwards we will speak.

² How long will ye anguish my soul and break me in pieces with words? ³ These ten times ye have reproached me; are ye not ashamed to make yourselves strange to me?

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge?

²⁵ That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked and that the righteous should be treated as the wicked that are far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

⁴ The strong One, whose work is perfect: for all his ways are right; a God of truth and without iniquity, just and upright is he.

⁷ Therefore, now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it, for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.

¹⁷ Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his maker?

² I know it is so of a truth, but how shall a man be justified with God?

³ Is it good unto thee that thou should oppress, that thou should reject the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁷ Behold, I shall cry out that I have been wronged, and I shall not be heard; I shall cry aloud, and there shall be no judgment.

¹⁵ Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?

²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my right.

¹⁰ ¶ Therefore, hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. ¹¹ For he shall pay man according to his work and cause every man to find according to his ways. ¹² Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.

¹⁷ Shall even he that hates judgment govern? And wilt thou condemn the Mighty One that is righteous? ¹⁸ Is it fit to say to the king, Thou art of Belial and to the princes, Ye are ungodly? ¹⁹ How much less to him who is not a respecter of the persons of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

¹³ Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty look upon it.

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? Let him that disputes with God answer this.

⁸ Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

¹⁴ Thy throne is composed of righteousness and judgment; mercy and truth go before thy face.

⁴ The king’s strength is that he loves judgment; thou dost establish equity; thou dost execute judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

²⁵ And if ye say, The way of the Lord is not straight. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not straight? Are not your ways crooked?

¹⁷ Then the sons of thy people shall say, The way of the Lord is not straight: but their way is the one that is not straight.

²⁰ Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not straight. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you each one after his ways.

¹⁴ And the LORD hastened upon the chastisement and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is just in all his works which he has done, for we did not listen to his voice.

⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

⁴ No, in no wise: for God is true, and every man a liar; as it is written, That thou might be justified in thy words and might overcome when thou dost judge. ⁵ And if our iniquity commends the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Shall for this reason God be unjust who sends punishment? (I speak as a man.) ⁶ No, in no wise: for then how shall God judge the world?

³ And they sing the song of Moses, the slave of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

⁷ And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

¹³ But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

¹³ For we will destroy this place because the cry of them is waxed great before the face of the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it. ¹⁴ And Lot went out and spoke unto his sons-in-law, those who were to marry his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons-in-law. ¹⁵ ¶ And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters who are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. ¹⁶ And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand and upon the hand of his wife and upon the hand of his two daughters, the LORD being merciful unto him; and they brought him forth and set him outside the city. ¹⁷ And it came to pass as they brought them forth outside, that he said, Escape; for thy soul, do not look behind thee, neither stop thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. ¹⁸ And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my lords; ¹⁹ behold now, thy slave has found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast showed unto me in saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die. ²⁰ Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one; Oh, let me escape there, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. ²¹ And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also that I will not overthrow the city for which thou hast spoken. ²² Make thee haste, escape there; for I cannot do anything until thou hast arrived there. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. ²³ The sun was rising upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. ²⁴ ¶ Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of the heavens; ²⁵ and he overthrew those cities and all that plain, with all the inhabitants of those cities, and the fruit of the ground.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of their banquets were over, that Job sent and sanctified them and rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned and blasphemed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there another came and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁴ His sons are far from saving health, and they shall be crushed in the gate, and there shall be no one to deliver them.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the streets. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings.

¹² And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, ¹³ and when he prayed unto him, he was heard; for he heard his supplication and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.

⁸ I would certainly seek God, and unto God would I commit my affairs;

¹³ ¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him;

²¹ ¶ Make up thy friendship now with him, and thou shalt have peace; thereby good shall come unto thee. ²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. ²³ If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tent; ²⁴ then thou shalt lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ And the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. ²⁶ For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God. ²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. ²⁸ Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and the light shall shine upon thy ways. ²⁹ When others are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. ³⁰ He shall deliver the island of the innocent; and in the pureness of thine hands thou shalt be kept.

⁶ ¶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near: ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

⁷ ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; ⁸ for every one that asks receives, and he that seeks finds, and to him that knocks it shall be opened.

⁷ ¶ Therefore, as the Holy Spirit saith, Today if ye will hear his voice, ⁸ harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

⁷ Submit yourselves, therefore, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. ⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

⁸ And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my slave Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God and has departed from evil?

⁶ Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the integrity of thy ways? ⁷ ¶ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off?

²⁴ And thou shalt know that there is peace in thy tent, and thou shalt visit thy habitation and shalt not sin.

¹⁷ ¶ even though there is no injustice in my hands, and my prayer has been pure.

¹⁴ Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?

⁶ Arise, O LORD, in thine anger; lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake the judgment in my favour that thou hast commanded.

⁵ I have hated the congregation of evil doers and will not sit with the wicked. ⁶ ¶ I will wash my hands in innocency, so I will walk near unto thine altar, O LORD:

²³ Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? Arise, do not cast us off for ever.

⁴ They run and prepare themselves when I have committed no iniquity; awake to help me and behold. ⁵ Thou, therefore, O LORD God of the hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the Gentiles; be not merciful to any rebellious workers of iniquity. Selah.

⁸ ¶ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; likewise, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood.

¹⁰ Say unto the righteous that it shall be well with him, for they shall eat of the fruit of their doings.

⁹ ¶ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in ages past. Art thou not he who cut off the proud one, and he who smote the dragon?

⁸ I desire, therefore, that the men in every place, pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and strife.

¹⁹ And in this we know that we are of the truth and have our hearts certified before him. ²⁰ ¶ And if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God; ²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

¹⁶ who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, a food which thy fathers knew not, afflicting thee and proving thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

¹² So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep and six thousand camels and a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she asses. ¹³ He also had seven sons and three daughters.

¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the light of the morning star, that shines more and more until the day is perfect.

²⁰ ¶ Hear counsel, and receive chastening that thou may be wise in thy old age.

¹⁰ For who has despised the day of small beginnings? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel. Those seven are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

⁷ but it shall be one day which is known to the LORD, not day, nor night; but it shall come to pass, that at evening time there shall be light.

¹² For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have in abundance; but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that which he has.

³¹ He put forth another parable unto them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; ³² which indeed is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the heaven come and make their nests in its branches.

²⁰ Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings.

³² Ask, therefore, now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other whether there has been any such thing as this great thing is, or has any other been heard like it?

⁷ ¶ Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask thy father, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee;

¹² ¶ With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days intelligence.

¹⁰ Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

¹⁸ that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,

⁶ ¶ And Elihu, the son of Barachel, the Buzite, answered and said, I am younger, and ye are older; therefore, I was afraid, and I feared to declare unto you my opinion. ⁷ I said, Days shall speak, and the multitude of years shall declare wisdom.

¹ To the Overcomer
for the sons of Korah, Maschil. ¶ We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days in the times of old.

³ which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their sons, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and his strength and his wonderful works that he has done.

¹⁹ He who lives, he who lives, even he shall confess thee, as I do this day; the father to the sons shall make known thy truth.

⁴ For the things that were written beforehand were written for our instruction that we, through patient endurance and through the comfort of the scriptures, might have hope.

¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them as types, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

⁹ And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have the days of the years of my life been and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

¹⁵ For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers; our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no other hope.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and are spent without hope.

² He comes forth like an open flower and is cut down; he flees as a shadow and does not remain.

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before thee; verily every man that lives is altogether vanity. Selah.

⁴ For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past and as a watch in the night.

⁴ Man is like unto vanity; his days are as a shadow that passes away.

⁷ and thou shalt repeat them diligently unto thy sons and shalt talk of them being in thy house and walking by the way, lying down in bed, and rising up;

¹⁹ And ye shall teach them to your children that ye may think of them sitting in thy house and walking by the way, lying down in bed, and rising up.

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the heavens, and they shall show thee; ⁸ or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; the fishes of the sea shall declare it unto thee also.

⁷ I said, Days shall speak, and the multitude of years shall declare wisdom.

⁴ Daleth One generation shall praise thy works to another and shall declare thy mighty acts.

²³ ¶ The heart of the wise causes his mouth to be prudent, and with his lips he shall increase doctrine.

¹⁵ ¶ The heart of the man of understanding acquires wisdom, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

³⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things, and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

⁴ ¶ By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts, and by it he being dead yet speaks.

¹ ¶ Therefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, leaving behind all the weight of the sin which surrounds us, let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

³ And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes and daubed it with slime and with pitch and put the child in it, and she laid it in the reeds by the river’s brink.

⁵ And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up. ⁶ And they shall turn the rivers far away, and the brooks of defence shall be emptied and dried up; the reeds and flags shall wither. ⁷ The vegetables by the river, by the mouth of the river, and every thing sown beside the river shall dry up, wither away, and be no more.

⁶ They shall be as the grass upon the housetops, which withers before it grows up, ⁷ with which the reaper does not fill his hand nor he that binds sheaves his bosom.

⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

²⁰ But he that was planted in stony places, the same is he that hears the word and receives it immediately with joy;

¹⁰ and he who is rich, in his low status, because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. ¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beautiful appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

²⁴ ¶ For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away,

¹² then beware lest thou forget the LORD, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

¹¹ Keep thyself, that thou forget not the LORD thy God, to not fulfill his commandments and his rights and his statutes, which I command thee this day,

¹⁴ then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery,

¹⁹ And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God and walk after other gods and serve them and worship them, I protest against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall consume themselves, and they shall have no refuge, and their hope shall be agony of the soul.

¹⁶ He also shall be my saving health; for the hypocrite shall not enter into his presence.

³⁴ For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and he shall be brought to the king of terrors.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has stolen much, when God takes away his soul? ⁹ Will God hear his cry when the tribulation comes upon him? ¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call upon God?

¹³ But the hypocrites in heart shall irritate him more; they shall not cry out when he binds them.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be put into Sheol, all the Gentiles that forget God.

⁴ The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, does not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

²² Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I take you away, and there be none to deliver.

²⁸ The hope of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked shall perish.

⁷ ¶ God shall overthrow the wicked, and they shall not be any longer, but the house of the righteous shall remain.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with eternal flames?

¹³ And thou hast already forgotten the LORD thy maker that has stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth and hast feared continually every day the fury of the oppressor when he was ready to destroy. But, where is the fury of the oppressor?

¹⁸ Vau And I said, My strength and my hope of the LORD is perished.

⁵¹ and shall cut him off and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹ ¶ In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. ² For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither hid that shall not be known.

⁵ They hatch cockatrice’ eggs and weave the spider’s web; whosoever shall eat of their eggs shall die, and if they should squeeze them, a viper shall come out. ⁶ Their cloth is unfit to be a garment, neither shall they cover themselves with their works; their works are works of violence, and the work of iniquity is in their hands.

¹⁸ He built his house as a moth and as a booth that the keeper makes.

¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

⁵ God shall likewise cast thee down for ever; he shall cut thee off and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah. ⁶ ¶ The righteous also shall see and fear and shall laugh at him, saying: ⁷ Behold, this is the man that did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

¹⁰ Resh The wicked shall see it and be furious; Schin he shall gnash with his teeth and waste away: Tau The desire of the wicked shall perish.

²⁴ Therefore, whosoever hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him unto a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock; ²⁵ and the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ And every one that hears these words of mine and does not do them shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; ²⁷ and the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.

⁴⁷ Whosoever comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: ⁴⁸ he is like a man who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation upon rock; and when the flood arose, the river beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it, for it was founded upon rock. ⁴⁹ But he that hears and does not do is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation against which the river beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but at the same time I cursed his habitation.

⁷ ¶ Why do the wicked live and become old and even increase in riches? ⁸ Their seed is with them, established in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear; neither is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their cows conceive, and do not abort; their cows calve and do not cast forth their young. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock of sheep, and their children dance. ¹² They jump at the sound of the timbrel and harp and rejoice at the sound of the organ. ¹³ They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.

³⁵ Resh I have seen the wicked in great power and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

³ For I became angry against the foolish when I saw the peace of the wicked. ⁴ Because there is no restraint that would bring about their death, but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore they are crowned with pride; they cover themselves with violence as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness; they easily obtain the desires of their heart. ⁸ They are lawless and speak wickedly of doing violence; they speak loftily. ⁹ They set their mouth against heaven, and their tongue walks through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore his people shall return here; and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. ¹¹ And they say, How does God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? ¹² Behold, these ungodly men, without being troubled by the world obtain riches.

¹¹ She sent out her boughs unto the sea and her branches unto the river.

¹⁶ The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, beautiful in fruit and in appearance. At the voice of a great word he caused fire to be kindled upon it, and they broke her branches.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off.

¹⁹ My root is spread out by the waters, and the dew shall remain upon my branches.

²⁴ Therefore as the fire devours the stubble and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go away as dust because they have cast away the law of the LORD of the hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

²⁴ As if they had never been planted, as if they had never been sown, as if their stock had never taken root in the earth; even blowing upon them, they wither, and the whirlwind takes them away as stubble.

¹ ¶ Righteous art thou, O LORD, even though I dispute with thee: even so, I will speak judgments with thee; Why does the way of the wicked prosper? All those that completely rebel against thee have peace. ² Thou hast planted them, and they have taken root: they grow, and they bring forth fruit; thou art near in their mouth and far from their kidneys.

²⁰ And passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

¹² These are spots in your banquets of charity, feeding themselves without any fear whatsoever: clouds without water, carried to and fro of the winds; trees withered as in fall, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

⁸ The eyes of those that see me now shall not see me again; thine eyes shall be upon me, and I will cease to be.

¹⁰ he shall return no more to his house; neither shall his place know him any more.

⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place behold him any more.

¹⁰ Vau For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors.

⁷ ¶ The wicked spring forth as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity blossom, so that they shall be destroyed for ever:

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and he has set the world upon them.

⁷ But God is the judge; he puts down one and sets up another.

²⁴ And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I say unto you that God is able to raise up children unto Abraham of these stones.

²⁰ But he that was planted in stony places, the same is he that hears the word and receives it immediately with joy; ²¹ yet he has no root in himself but is temporal, for when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, by and by he is offended.

⁷ ¶ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off?

²² ¶ One thing remains, that I say, He consumes the perfect and the wicked.

³⁰ That the wicked is reserved for the day of destruction, they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

²⁴ Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

³⁷ Schin Mark the perfect, and behold the upright, for the end of each one of them is peace.

¹⁴ For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

¹ ¶ Thus saith the LORD to his Messiah, to Cyrus, whom I have taken by his right hand to subdue Gentiles before him and to loose the loins of kings. To open before him the two-leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut:

⁶ Then Sarah said, God has made me to laugh so that all that hear will laugh with me.

¹¹ And they sang, praising and giving thanks unto the LORD because he is good, for his mercy endures for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, praising the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. ¹² But many of the priests and Levites and of the heads of the fathers, who were ancient men that had seen the first house, as the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice while many shouted aloud for joy: ¹³ so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.

⁴³ Also that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women also and the children rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

²² At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh; neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth;

¹¹ Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, ye righteous, and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

⁴ ¶ Sing with joy unto the LORD, all the earth; lift up thy voice and rejoice and sing praises.

¹ A Psalm of praise. ¶ Make a joyful noise unto the LORD all the earth.

² Then our mouth shall be filled with laughter and our tongue with singing; then they shall say among the Gentiles, The LORD has done great things with them.

⁶ He that goes forth and weeps, bearing the precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

¹³ Therefore thus has the Lord GOD said, Behold, my slaves shall eat, but ye shall be hungry; behold, my slaves shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty; behold, my slaves shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: ¹⁴ Behold, my slaves shall rejoice by the joy of their heart, but ye shall cry for the sorrow of your heart and shall howl for the destruction of spirit.

²¹ Blessed are those that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed are those that weep now, for ye shall laugh.

²¹ And why dost thou not take away my rebellion and pass over my iniquity? For now I shall sleep in the dust; and if thou shalt seek me in the morning, I shall not be found.

¹⁸ If he is uprooted from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.

²⁶ Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at my hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

²⁹ Let those who speak evil against me falsely be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion as with a mantle.

¹⁸ His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon himself shall his crown blossom.

⁵ ¶ Likewise, young people, be subject to the elders in such a manner that you are all subject to one another. Be clothed with humility of will, for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
