¹ ¶ And it came to pass many days after the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age. ² And Joshua called for all Israel and for their elders and for their princes and for their judges and for their officers and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age; ³ and ye have seen all that the LORD your God has done with all these Gentiles in your presence; for the LORD your God has fought for you. ⁴ Behold, I have divided unto you as inheritance unto your tribes all these Gentiles, those that remain as well as those that are destroyed, from the Jordan unto the great sea towards the going down of the sun. ⁵ And the LORD your God, shall expel them from before you and drive them from out of your presence; and ye shall possess their lands, as the LORD your God has promised unto you. ⁶ Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses without turning aside to the right hand or to the left ⁷ that ye not enter in among these Gentiles that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them, ⁸ but cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day. ⁹ For the LORD has driven out from before you great and strong Gentiles; and until now no one has been able to stand before your face. ¹⁰ One man of you has chased a thousand; for the LORD your God, he himself has fought for you, as he has promised you. ¹¹ ¶ Therefore take heed for your souls that ye love the LORD your God. ¹² Because if ye do in any wise go back and cleave unto the remnant of these Gentiles that remain among you and shall make marriages with them and go in unto them and they to you, ¹³ know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no longer drive out any of these Gentiles from before you, but they shall be snares and traps unto you and scourges in your sides and thorns in your eyes until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you. ¹⁴ And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing has failed thereof. ¹⁵ Therefore it shall come to pass that as all the good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you, so shall the LORD bring upon you all the evil things until he has destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you ¹⁶ when ye shall transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, going in and serving other gods and bowing yourselves to them. And the anger of the LORD shall be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he has given unto you.

⁸ Then Abraham expired and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.

² and he said unto them, I am one hundred and twenty years old today; I can no longer go out and come in; also the LORD has said unto me, Thou shalt not pass this Jordan.

²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

¹ ¶ Now when Joshua was old and advanced in years, the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed.

⁴⁴ And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he had sworn unto their fathers; and none of their enemies could stand before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hands.

⁴ And now the LORD your God has given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them; therefore now return and go to your tents and unto the land of your possessions which Moses the slave of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan.

⁹ He makes wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and cuts the spear in sunder; he burns the chariot in the fire.

²⁸ Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, and I shall speak these words in their ears and call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against them.

¹ ¶ And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and called for the elders of Israel and for their princes and for their judges and for their officers, and they presented themselves before God.

¹ ¶ And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the princes of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the princes over the thousands, and princes over the hundreds, with the princes over all the substance and possession of the king, and his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem.

¹⁷ ¶ And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}. ¹⁸ And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, ¹⁹ serving the Lord with all humility and with many tears and temptations, which have befallen me by the ambushes of the Jews, ²⁰ and how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you and have taught you publicly and from house to house, ²¹ testifying both to the Jews and also to the Gentiles, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. ²² And now, behold, I go bound of the Spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there, ²³ except that the Holy Spirit witnesses in every city, saying that prisons and tribulations await me. ²⁴ But none of these things move me, neither do I count my life dear unto myself, only that I might finish my course with joy and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. ²⁵ And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. ²⁶ Therefore I take you to record this day that I am pure from the blood of everyone. ²⁷ For I have not refrained from declaring unto you the full counsel of God. ²⁸ Take heed therefore unto yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has placed you as bishops to feed the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} of God, which he has purchased with his own blood. ²⁹ For I know this, that after my departing, grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock. ³⁰ Also from among your own selves, men shall arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after themselves. ³¹ Therefore watch and remember that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. ³² And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is powerful to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. ³³ I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. ³⁴ Moreover, ye yourselves know that these hands have ministered unto my necessities and to those that were with me. ³⁵ I have showed you in all things how that so labouring, ye ought to support the weak and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

¹⁴ The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall be still.

⁹ Therefore, take heed to thyself and keep thy soul diligently lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life, but teach them to thy sons and thy sons’ sons.

⁴ for the LORD your God is he that goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

¹⁴ And there was no day like that before it or after it that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.

⁴² All these kings and their lands Joshua took at one time because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

¹ To the Overcomer
for the sons of Korah, Maschil. ¶ We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days in the times of old. ² How thou didst drive out the Gentiles with thy hand and plant them in their place; how thou didst afflict the peoples and cast them out. ³ For they did not get the land in inheritance by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them, but thy right hand and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance because thy delight was in them.

⁵ And your eyes shall see and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified over the province of Israel.

² This is the land that yet remains: all the borders of the Philistines and all Geshuri

⁶ All the inhabitants of the mountains from Lebanon unto the hot springs and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the sons of Israel; only thou shalt divide the country by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee. ⁷ ¶ Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes and the half tribe of Manasseh,

¹⁰ And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD; and there Joshua divided the land unto the sons of Israel according to their portions.

³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before thee until thou be multiplied and take the land by inheritance. ³¹ And I will set thy borders from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines and from the desert unto the river; for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

² (And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.)

¹¹ Keep that which I command thee this day; behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

⁵² then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you and abolish all their paintings and abolish all their molten images and destroy all their high places, ⁵³ and ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell therein; for I have given you the land to inherit it.

²³ then the LORD will drive out all these Gentiles from before you, and ye shall possess nations greater and mightier than yourselves.

³² Ye shall observe to do, therefore, as the LORD your God has commanded you; ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

³² Keep thyself, and do all that I command you; thou shalt not add to it nor diminish from it.

²⁰ that his heart be not lifted up above his brethren and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand or to the left, to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his sons, in the midst of Israel.

¹⁴ And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

⁷ Only be thou strong and very courageous that thou mayest keep and do according to all the law, which Moses my slave commanded thee; turn not from it to the right hand or to the left that thou may be prospered in all the things that thou doest. ⁸ This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou may keep and do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way to prosper, and then thou shalt understand everything. ⁹ See that I command thee to be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed; for I, the LORD thy God, am with thee wherever thou goest.

²⁶ Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left; remove thy foot from evil.

³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies, but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth for they proceed from evil to evil, and they did not recognize me, said the LORD.

¹³ ¶ Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.

¹⁰ ¶ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. ¹¹ Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand firm against the wiles of the devil. ¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the lords of this age, rulers of this darkness, against spiritual wickedness in the heavens. ¹³ Therefore, take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day and stand fast, all the work having been finished. ¹⁴ Stand firm, therefore, having your loins girt about with truth and having on the breastplate, {the coat of mail and coat of arms} of righteousness, ¹⁵ and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, ¹⁶ above all, taking the shield of faith, with which ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; ¹⁸ praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching in this with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints ¹⁹ ¶ and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth with confidence, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

⁴ ¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, fighting against sin.

⁸ But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

⁵ Thou shalt not bow down to them nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons unto the third and fourth generation of those that hate me

¹³ And in all things that I have said unto you, be circumspect and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

³³ They shall not dwell in thy land lest peradventure they make thee sin against me by serving their gods, for it will be a snare unto thee.

³⁸ and Nebo and Baalmeon (their names being changed) and Shibmah and gave other names unto the cities which they built.

² and when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee, thou shalt smite them and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them nor show mercy unto them. ³ Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

¹² Because if ye do in any wise go back and cleave unto the remnant of these Gentiles that remain among you and shall make marriages with them and go in unto them and they to you,

⁴ The sorrows of those that hasten after another god shall be multiplied; their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

¹⁴ ¶ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

⁷ How shall I pardon thee for this? Thy sons have forsaken me and sworn by them that are not gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.

¹⁷ For I will take away the names of Baals out of her mouth, and they shall no longer be remembered by their name.

⁵ and those that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops and those that worship swearing by the LORD and by their king

³³ Be not deceived: evil companions corrupt good character.

¹⁴ Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship does righteousness have with unrighteousness? and what communion does light have with darkness? ¹⁵ And what concord does Christ have with Belial? or what part do the faithful have with the unfaithful? ¹⁶ And what agreement does the temple of God have with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them and walk in them and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. ¹⁷ Therefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing; and I will receive you

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

⁴ But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive, every one of you this day.

²⁰ Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave and swear by his name.

²² For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, loving the LORD your God and walking in all his ways, to cleave unto him,

⁴ Ye shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and hear his voice, and ye shall serve him and cleave unto him.

⁵ Only that with diligence ye keep yourselves doing the commandment and the law, which Moses, the slave of the LORD, charged you: to love the LORD your God and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cleave unto him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

²³ Who, when he came and had seen the grace of God, was glad and exhorted them all to remain in their purpose of heart in the Lord.

³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before thee until thou be multiplied and take the land by inheritance.

²⁴ And he shall deliver their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven; no one shall be able to stand before thee until thou hast destroyed them.

⁵ No one shall be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.

¹⁴ And Caleb drove from there the three sons of Anak, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak.

⁴³ ¶ Thus the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he swore to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it and dwelt therein. ⁴⁴ And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he had sworn unto their fathers; and none of their enemies could stand before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hands.

⁸ And five of you shall chase one hundred, and one hundred of you shall put ten thousands to flight; and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

²² Ye shall not fear them, for the LORD your God, he shall fight for you.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two put ten thousands to flight if their strong One had not sold them, and the LORD had not delivered them up?

³ and ye have seen all that the LORD your God has done with all these Gentiles in your presence; for the LORD your God has fought for you.

³¹ ¶ And after him was Shamgar, the son of Anath, who slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad, and he also saved Israel.

¹⁹ So Gideon and the hundred men that were with him came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch when only the guards were awake, and they blew the shofarot and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. ²⁰ And the three companies blew the shofarot; and breaking the pitchers, they held the torches in their left hands and the shofarot in their right hands to blow with; and they cried, The sword of I AM The Hewer! {YHWH-Gideon} ²¹ And they stood in their places round about the camp; and all the camp was routed, and they fled crying out. ²² But the three hundred blew the shofarot, and the LORD set each man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the camp; and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath and to the border of Abelmeholah unto Tabbath.

¹⁵ And he found a new jawbone of an ass and put forth his hand and took it and slew a thousand men with it.

⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour, Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised; peradventure the LORD will work for us, for it is not difficult for the LORD to save by many or by few.

¹² And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. Then Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel. ¹³ And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet and his armourbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan, and his armourbearer slew after him. ¹⁴ And that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armourbearer made was about twenty men within as it were a half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow. ¹⁵ And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people of the garrison; and those who had gone out to destroy the land, they also trembled, and the earth quaked, and there was fear of God. ¹⁶ ¶ And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

⁸ ¶ These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: he that sat in the seat of wisdom, chief among the three: Adino, the Eznite, who on one occasion slew eight hundred enemies.

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ Plead my cause, O LORD, with those that strive with me; fight against those that fight against me.

⁴ Thou art my King, O God; command saving health unto Jacob. ⁵ Through thee will we push down our enemies; through thy name will we tread under those that rise up against us.

⁷ The LORD of the hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

³¹ ¶ What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who shall be against us?

⁶ and showing mercy unto thousands of generations of those that love me and keep my commandments.

⁵ And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might. ⁶ And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart, ⁷ and thou shalt repeat them diligently unto thy sons and shalt talk of them being in thy house and walking by the way, lying down in bed, and rising up; ⁸ and thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thy eyes; ⁹ and thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house and on thy gates. ¹⁰ And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it unto thee: great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build, ¹¹ and houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and hewn out wells, which thou didst not dig, vineyards and olive trees, which thou didst not plant; when thou shalt have eaten and be full, ¹² then beware lest thou forget the LORD, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

²³ Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with excess and drunkenness and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

²⁸ And we now know that unto those who love God, all things help them unto good, to those who according to the purpose are called to be saints.

³ But if anyone loves God, the same is known of him.

²² If any man does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema. Our Lord has come.

¹⁵ See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

¹⁵ looking diligently that no one deviate from the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up impede you, and thereby many be defiled,

²⁰ But ye, beloved, building up yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, ²¹ keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto eternal life,

²⁴ Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh.

³ And his soul was joined unto Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he fell in love with the damsel and spoke unto her heart.

¹² Keep thyself lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where thou must enter lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee; ¹³ but ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves; ¹⁴ for thou shalt worship no other god; for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. ¹⁵ Therefore thou shalt not make a covenant with the inhabitants of that land because they shall fornicate after their gods and do sacrifice unto their gods, and they shall call thee, and thou shalt eat of their sacrifices ¹⁶ or take of their daughters unto thy sons, and when their daughters go fornicating after their gods they shall make thy sons also fornicate after their gods.

³ Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass when he had finished speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. ² And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. ³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul.

² of the Gentiles concerning which the LORD had said unto the sons of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods. Solomon clave unto these in love.

⁴ For it came to pass when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David, his father.

¹ ¶ Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites, doing according to their abominations, ² for they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, and the holy seed is mingled with the peoples of the lands; and the hand of the princes and of the governors has been foremost in this trespass.

¹¹ which thou hast commanded by thy slaves the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land because of the uncleanness of the people of the lands, for the abominations with which they have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. ¹² Now, therefore, do not give your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever, that ye may be strengthened, and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your sons forever.

²³ ¶ In those days I also saw Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab; ²⁴ and their sons spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and according to the language of each people; for they could not speak in the Jews’ language. ²⁵ And I contended with them and cursed them and smote certain of them and plucked off their hair and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves. ²⁶ Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless, strange women caused even him to offend.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise and to do good.

³⁴ ¶ They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: ³⁵ But were mingled among the Gentiles and learned their works.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall take them away with the workers of iniquity; and peace shall be upon Israel.

⁴ O sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, generation of evildoers, corrupt sons! They have forsaken the LORD; they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger; they have turned back.

²⁴ But if the righteous should leave his righteousness and commit iniquity, and do according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All his righteousness that he has done shall not be mentioned; by his rebellion in which he has trespassed and by his sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.

⁶ and those that have turned back from following the LORD and those that did not seek the LORD, nor enquired about him.

⁴⁵ Then it goes and takes with itself seven other spirits worse than itself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it also be unto this wicked generation.

⁶⁶ After this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.

⁹ Let love be without dissimulation, abhorring that which is evil, causing you to come unto that which is good;

³⁸ Now the just shall live by faith, but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. ³⁹ But we are not of those who draw back unto perdition, but faithful unto the saving of the soul.

¹⁸ For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, being they themselves the slaves of corruption: for he who is overcome by someone is subject to bondage by the one that overcame him. ²⁰ Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog returns unto his own vomit, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

⁹ He that says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.

³¹ And I will make your cities waste and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the aroma of your suave incense. ³² And I will bring the land into desolation, and your enemies who dwell therein shall be astonished at it. ³³ And I will scatter you among the Gentiles and will draw out a sword after you, and your land shall be desolate and your cities waste. ³⁴ Then shall the land rest for her sabbaths all the days that it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest and enjoy her sabbaths. ³⁵ All the time that it shall be desolate, it shall rest that which it did not rest in your sabbaths when ye dwelt upon it.

⁵⁵ But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall come to pass that those whom ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides and shall afflict you in the land in which ye dwell.

²⁶ I put heaven and earth as witnesses today that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land unto which ye pass the Jordan to inherit it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it without being utterly destroyed.

¹⁶ And thou shalt consume all the peoples which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them; neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

⁶³ And it shall come to pass that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to cause you to perish and to destroy you; and ye shall be plucked from off the land into which thou dost enter in to inherit it. ⁶⁴ And the LORD shall scatter thee among all the peoples from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. ⁶⁵ Neither shalt thou find rest among these Gentiles, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest; but there the LORD shall give thee a trembling heart and failing of eyes and sorrow of soul; ⁶⁶ and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night and shalt have no assurance of thy life. ⁶⁷ In the morning thou shalt say, I wish it were evening, and in the evening thou shalt say, I wish it were morning! For the fear of thine heart with which thou shalt fear and for that which thine eyes shall see. ⁶⁸ And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again in ships by the way of which I spoke unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again; and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for menslaves and womenslaves, and there shall be no one to buy you.

²⁸ And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation and cast them into another land, as it is today.

¹⁸ I declare unto you this day that ye shall surely perish and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, to go unto which thou passest the Jordan to inherit it.

² as long as ye make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; to the contrary, ye shall throw down their altars, but ye have not heard my voice; why have ye done this? ³ Therefore, I also said, I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

²² For the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they did not depart from them ²³ until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his slaves the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

²¹ And the king of Babylon smote and slew them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.

²⁶ Then all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose and went to Egypt, for they were afraid of the Chaldees.

²² ¶ Let their table become a snare before them, and that which should have been for their prosperity, let it become a stumbling block.

³⁵ But were mingled among the Gentiles and learned their works. ³⁶ And they served their idols, which were a snare unto them. ³⁷ Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils ³⁸ and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood. ³⁹ Thus they were defiled with their own works and went a whoring with their own inventions.

²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

²⁶ and that they may become converted out of the snare of the devil, in which they are captive to do his will.

⁸ and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land unto a good and broad land, unto a land flowing with milk and honey, unto the places of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.

²⁷ I will send my fear before thee and will trouble all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee. ²⁸ And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite from before thee. ²⁹ I will not drive them out from before thee in one year lest the land become desolate and the beasts of the field multiply against thee. ³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before thee until thou be multiplied and take the land by inheritance.

³ If ye walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, ⁴ then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. ⁵ And your threshing shall last unto the vintage, and the vintage shall last unto the sowing time; and ye shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land safely. ⁶ For I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and no one shall make you afraid; and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. ⁷ And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. ⁸ And five of you shall chase one hundred, and one hundred of you shall put ten thousands to flight; and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. ⁹ For I will return unto you and make you fruitful and multiply you and establish my covenant with you. ¹⁰ And ye shall eat old store and bring forth the old because of the new. ¹¹ And I will set my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. ¹² And I will walk among you and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. ¹³ I AM your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their slaves; and I have broken the bands of your yoke and made you walk with your faces uplifted.

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent; he said and shall he not do it? He spoke and shall he not execute it?

¹ ¶ And it shall come to pass if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God to keep and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all the Gentiles of the earth; ² and all these blessings shall come upon thee and overtake thee when thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. ³ Blessed shalt thou be in the city and blessed shalt thou be in the field. ⁴ Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground and the fruit of thy beasts, the increase of thy cows, and the flocks of thy sheep. ⁵ Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. ⁶ Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. ⁷ The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face; they shall come out against thee one way and flee before thee seven ways. ⁸ The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee. ⁹ The LORD shall confirm thee as his holy people, as he has sworn unto thee, when thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God and walk in his ways. ¹⁰ And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of thee. ¹¹ And the LORD shall cause thee to have good in abundance in the fruit of thy body and in the fruit of thy beasts and in the fruit of thy ground, upon the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers to give thee. ¹² The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven, to give the rain unto thy land in its season and to bless all the work of thine hand. And thou shalt lend unto many Gentiles, and thou shalt not borrow. ¹³ And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail, and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath, when thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to keep them and to fulfill them. ¹⁴ And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

⁴³ ¶ Thus the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he swore to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it and dwelt therein. ⁴⁴ And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he had sworn unto their fathers; and none of their enemies could stand before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hands. ⁴⁵ There failed not a word of all the good things which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all of it came to pass.

¹⁹ ¶ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and did not let any of his words fall to the ground.

² I go the way of all the earth; be thou strong therefore and show thyself a man.

⁵⁶ Blessed be the LORD that has given rest unto his people Israel according to all that he had said; not one word has failed of all his good word, which he spoke by the hand of Moses, his slave.

²³ For I know that thou dost conduct me unto death and to the house appointed for all living.

¹⁰ Whatever thy hand finds to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, where thou goest.

⁵ when they shall also be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and appetite shall fail: because man goes to the home of his age, and the mourners shall go about the streets;

³³ The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

²⁷ And as it is appointed unto men to die once, and after this the judgment;

¹⁴ ¶ But if ye will not hearken unto me and will not do all these my commandments; ¹⁵ and if ye shall despise my statutes or if your soul should abhor my rights so that ye will not do all my commandments but that ye break my covenant, ¹⁶ I also will do this unto you: I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague that shall consume the eyes and torment the soul, and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ And I will place my wrath upon you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies; those that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when no one pursues you. ¹⁸ And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. ¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your stronghold, and I will make your heaven as iron and your earth as bronze. ²⁰ And your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. ²¹ And if ye walk contrary unto me and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. ²² I will also send wild beasts among you which shall rapture your children and destroy your animals and make you few in number, and your ways shall be desolate. ²³ And if ye will not be corrected by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me, ²⁴ then will I also walk contrary unto you and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. ²⁵ And I will bring an avenging sword upon you, in vindication of the covenant; and ye shall gather together within your cities; but I will send pestilence among you, and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. ²⁶ When I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight, and ye shall eat and not be satisfied. ²⁷ And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me but walk contrary unto me, ²⁸ then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury, and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. ³⁰ And I will destroy your high places and cut down your images and cast your carcasses upon the carcasses of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. ³¹ And I will make your cities waste and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the aroma of your suave incense. ³² And I will bring the land into desolation, and your enemies who dwell therein shall be astonished at it. ³³ And I will scatter you among the Gentiles and will draw out a sword after you, and your land shall be desolate and your cities waste. ³⁴ Then shall the land rest for her sabbaths all the days that it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest and enjoy her sabbaths. ³⁵ All the time that it shall be desolate, it shall rest that which it did not rest in your sabbaths when ye dwelt upon it. ³⁶ And upon those that are left alive of you I will send such cowardice into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, that the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursue. ³⁷ And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursue; and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸ And ye shall perish among the Gentiles, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. ³⁹ And those that are left of you shall pine away for their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and for the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. ⁴⁰ ¶ And they shall confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers for their trespass which they trespassed against me and that also they have walked contrary unto me, ⁴¹ and that I also have walked contrary unto them and have brought them into the land of their enemies; and then their uncircumcised hearts shall be humbled, and they shall plead because of their iniquity; ⁴² and I will remember my covenant with Jacob and likewise my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember, and I will remember the land. ⁴³ That the land shall be without them and shall rest her sabbaths, being desolate because of them; and they shall plead because of their iniquity because they despised my rights and their soul abhorred my statutes. ⁴⁴ And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them to destroy them utterly and to break my covenant with them; for I AM their God. ⁴⁵ But I will remember them because of the old covenant, when I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the Gentiles, that I might be their God: I am the LORD. ⁴⁶ These are the statutes and rights and laws, which the LORD established between him and the sons of Israel in Mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.

¹⁵ ¶ And it shall come to pass if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep, to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee today, that all these curses shall come upon thee and overtake thee. ¹⁶ Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. ¹⁷ Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store. ¹⁸ Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy cows and the flocks of thy sheep. ¹⁹ Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. ²⁰ The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, destruction and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand to do, until thou art destroyed and perish quickly because of the wickedness of thy doings, by which thou hast forsaken me. ²¹ The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee until he has consumed thee from off the land into which thou dost enter to inherit it. ²² The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption and with a fever and with an inflammation and with an extreme burning and with the sword and with blight and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. ²³ And thy heavens which are over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. ²⁴ The LORD shall make the rain of thy land dust and ashes; from the heavens it shall come down upon thee, until thou art destroyed. ²⁵ The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies; thou shalt go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them and shalt be an object of trembling unto all the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And thy carcase shall be food unto all fowls of the air and unto the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten them away. ²⁷ The LORD will smite thee with the boil of Egypt and with the hemorrhoids and with the scab and with the itch, of which thou canst not be healed. ²⁸ The LORD shall smite thee with madness and blindness and astonishment of heart. ²⁹ And thou shalt grope at noonday as the blind grope in the darkness, and thou shalt not be prospered in thy ways; and thou shalt only be oppressed and spoiled all the days, and there shall be no one to save thee. ³⁰ Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard and shalt not gather the grapes thereof. ³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have no one to rescue them. ³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all the day long; and there shall be no strength in thine hand. ³³ The fruit of thy land and all thy labours shall a people which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt only be oppressed and crushed all the days. ³⁴ So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. ³⁵ The LORD shall smite thee in the knees and in the legs with an evil boil that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head. ³⁶ The LORD shall bring thee and thy king which thou shalt set over thee unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, and there shalt thou serve other gods, even wood and stone. ³⁷ And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all nations where the LORD shall carry thee away. ³⁸ Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field and shalt gather but little in, for the locust shall consume it. ³⁹ Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worms shall eat them. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall fall. ⁴¹ Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume. ⁴³ The stranger that is in the midst of thee shall get up above thee very high, and thou shalt come down very low. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him; he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. ⁴⁵ ¶ Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee and shall pursue thee and overtake thee until thou art destroyed because thou shalt not have attended unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee; ⁴⁶ and they shall be in thee for a sign and for a wonder, and in thy seed for ever. ⁴⁷ Because thou didst not serve the LORD thy God with joyfulness and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; ⁴⁸ therefore, thou shalt serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger and in thirst and in nakedness and in lack of all things; and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck until he has destroyed thee. ⁴⁹ The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand, ⁵⁰ a nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old nor show favour to the young; ⁵¹ and he shall eat the fruit of thy beast and the fruit of thy land until thou art destroyed, which also shall not leave thee either grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy cows or flocks of thy sheep until he has destroyed thee. ⁵² And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates until thy high and fenced walls come down, in which thou dost trust, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God has given thee. ⁵³ And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God has given thee, in the siege and in the straitness with which thine enemies shall distress thee. ⁵⁴ The man that is tender among you and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother and toward the wife of his bosom and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave, ⁵⁵ so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat, because he shall have nothing left him in the siege and in the straitness with which thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. ⁵⁶ The tender and delicate woman among you who would not venture to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom and toward her son and toward her daughter ⁵⁷ and toward her young one that comes out from between her feet and toward her children which she shall bear, for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness with which thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates, ⁵⁸ if thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book that thou may fear this glorious and fearful name; I AM thy God. ⁵⁹ Then the LORD will augment thy plagues wonderfully, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues and of long continuance, and evil sicknesses and of long continuance. ⁶⁰ Moreover, he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of, and they shall cleave unto thee. ⁶¹ Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, the LORD will bring upon thee until thou art destroyed. ⁶² And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude, because thou would not hear the voice of the LORD thy God.

⁸ ¶ Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia, and the sons of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

¹² ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against Israel because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

¹ ¶ But the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD when Ehud was dead. ² And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor, the captain of whose host was Sisera, and he dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

¹ ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hands of Midian for seven years.

⁶ ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD and served the Baalim and Ashtaroth and the gods of Syria and the gods of Zidon and the gods of Moab and the gods of the sons of Ammon and the gods of the Philistines and forsook the LORD and did not serve him. ⁷ And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon,

¹ ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy. ¹⁷ Therefore, he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age; he gave them all into his hands.

²² For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. ²³ But woe unto those that are with child and to those that give suck in those days! For there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up the measure of their sins always, for the wrath of God has come upon them to the uttermost.

²⁵ When thou shalt beget children and grandchildren and ye shall have remained long in the land and shall corrupt yourselves and make a graven image or the likeness of any thing and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger, ²⁶ I put heaven and earth as witnesses today that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land unto which ye pass the Jordan to inherit it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it without being utterly destroyed.

²⁰ For the anger of the LORD was against Jerusalem and Judah until he cast them out from his presence. And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
